Ambiance was nice, but what the experience a dud was the service, or lack thereof. Per the menu description: soft scrambled eggs, prosciutto, cheddar gruyère cheese, spicy truffle mayo. Don't get me wrong, it was well presented. The eggs were way overcooked. From a logistical standpoint, there is no proper way to eat it. No matter if you attack it with fork and knife or by hand, the prosciutto will slide off and your left with a bite of egg and toast. Our server was very personable, but once the place picked up the staff took the brunt of it. We waited quite a while for our check. It probably didn't help that our coffees were cold each time they were refilled. To reiterate, if everything were half the price, go ahead. But a $60 breakfast with tip? C'mon, that's just insane. We ordered Raviole Dauphine, cheese fondue, onion soup, Flamme Keuche ( a type of pizza from Alsace ) pork spare rib in sauerkraut, chocolate fondue for desert. All had good deep flavours, perhaps the Keuche slightly undercooked but all good. chef is Mexican, owner from Europe. The menu has recently changed to a French style menu. Small cozy, very nice decor which makes the food taste really nice. In this day and age of high prices. Such a lovely spot for brunch! On the hunt for somewhere to treat myself to a nice breakfast in Aspen, I found Bear Den online, and with so many things on the menu calling my name, I could not wait to treat myself. I stopped by on a Friday morning at around 10 AM and the wait for an outdoor table was only around 10-15 minutes. The building has a lot of charm inside, and plenty of patio seating outside. I enjoyed the french toast board, which had pieces of both sourdough and challah french toast accompanied with berries, Nutella, and syrup, as well as a flat white. Was it one of the most beautiful things I have ever ordered? Yes. Was it one of the tastiest things I have eaten? No. Did I have a completely lovely morning here? Yes. The staff was phenomenal and prices were pretty reasonable. They should rather call this chicken schnitzel sandwich as it fits the description better. Anyway, the flavor wasn't there for me. Very bland and boring. The chicken, bacon and the sourdough are all very chewy, which breaks apart the sandwich easily. Also, the portions are very tiny, typical of any Aspen restaurants. The Good: The ambiance is top notch. The restaurant is super cute, tiny and cozy inside. The seating outside is fabulous, heat lamps, super cozy. The pear and blue cheese salad was delicious, it was the highlight of our meal. The Bad: Clearly people do not go to the Bear Den for the food. We started with an old fashion, that was missing the sugar and the cherry. It was straight up bourbon with an orange slice. The noodles in the shrimp scampi were good but the shrimp were not deveined and were very gritty. The flavor of the shrimp was very strong and tasted very fishy. The bison bolognese lacked flavor and salt. Of all the restaurants we've been to in Aspen, this was the most expensive meal and the worst food. The bread was perfectly toasted, and I loved the flavor of the sourdough bread. The beef was a little chewy, and the surface of the beef wasn't browned. The bottom of the bread got soggy really quickly. The mustard sauce was not overpowering, I thought they did a good job balancing the flavor profile of the toppings. One complaint: I found 2 hairs on my plate. I just removed them and continued eating without issue, but still needed to include this detail in the review. Truffle cheese fries: 5/5. These were some of the best truffle fries I've had. Definitely on my top 3. The fries were crispy, and they were generous with the cheese and truffle.
