We really wanted to like this place. We pulled up and it looked closed. Open sign off and no sign out front. We hesitantly went inside and it looked just as closed on the inside. It was dark, dinghy and dirty. There were bugs on the floor and the place just seemed ran down. They close the salad bar at 2 so they were wrapping that all up. We actually asked if they were closing because it just didn't even seem like they were even open. The whole experience was just weird. We didn't even end up ordering food it was so awkward. I personally feel like the deliciousness of the coleslaw tells me everything I need to know about the rest of their food. Thankfully this place has delicious coleslaw. And potato salad. And fried okra. I didn't eat the Mac and cheese but my family said it was okay. We got a big box of brisket and a box of pulled pork. Everything was really good! And the meat lasted my family five days! The portions were very generous!!! And they gave us a big cup of bbq sauce which was one of the tastiest I've ever had. The bread they gave to us was nice and toasted and much better than the bread I've had at other places. In case you don't know, this is an Eddie Deen place. But it's Eddie Deen for the locals, not for the convention/party crowd. You want to stop here if you are driving through Terrell. Detour if you're on I-20. Really. We'd eaten here years ago and revisited on the way out of state on vacation. It was just as good as we remembered. Portions are huge. Plan to share or overeat or abandon platefuls of food. The pickle selection is crazy. Cra-Zy. If there's a Koolaid flavor, there's a pickle in its honor. Pick up one of Mama Deen's mini pies at the counter - we can highly recommend the chocolate pecan buttermilk. It's a mini but is so rich we shared. Everyone knows everyone in there and will provide a running commentary on what you ordered, what pickle you should try next and give advice on the best route to take on your trip. I met an old friend here for lunch. We were both from out of town, opposite directions and thought Terrell would be a great halfway place and we both like BBQ. We walked in with average expectations but we were totally blown away with the food and service. I had their chicken, regular sausage and fried okra. Outstanding! Wow!!!! I never knew you could cook brisket to the point that it was absolutely too dry to eat. We got a family meal and ordered it w Okra and Mac and cheese. They didn't have okra. The side were mediocre at best. I called and complained all the girl could say was " yes ma'am " it is dry and inedible? 40 or so dollars later we are throwing this in the trash and ordering pizza!!!! ambiance - place is very dark, musty, and we saw at least 5 dead crickets inside service - the young man taking our order barely spoke to us. we've never been here before and could have used help understanding how many sides we needed to pick etc. when he did speak he mumbled and therefore could not be understood. food - I've had bbq in many places, St. Louis, Georgia, florida, sc, nc, tn, ky, and now tx. this was very mediocre. there is only one kind of sauce here, a sweet one like sweet baby rays. there is no flavor or bark on the meat whatsoever. A pork sandwich by itself is close to $10 and the green beans are flavorless from a can. Two meals were $35 and we could not even eat our sides. Most of their fountain drinks were out of order so even that was a let down. Best in Terrell, probably because there is hardly anything here! read more

Was hoping for something close to what the good reviews described but it did not happen. Got the two meat combo of brisket and ribs with pasta salad and dirty rice. The sides behind the glass counter warmer, looked like they had been in the warming pan since before lunch ( I arrived at 7pm). The brisket had a funny "chemical taste" that seemed to be on the outside bark. Don't know if it is how they start the fire or a dirty grate cause the strange taste. Two very small ribs came with the order and they were tender but not much flavor. The available bbq sauce helped some. This is Not one of the better BBQ places I have tried and not one I would go back too. In a positive note, the sweet tea was great. I wish them luck. read more

Friday/ 5:30pm/ May 4th, 2018 I had the pulled pork plate - awesome. Baked beans were okay but boring. Green beans were edible, but not enjoyable. Wife had catfish - it was safe. French fries - very good. Ambience: your killing me smalls. It was live music night. Singer had a decent voice, but it was his personal microphone and so he had conversations through it - very annoying and unprofessional. Where he was located made it awkward to sit in seats surrounding him, this cut down on the number of seats available. They did give us my wife's plate for free for some awesome reason when we first arrived. But it wasn't someplace we will return to. read more

This is a tough one to review. I used to wonder....why are they never busy. The food is actually really good. The staff are friendly. The prices are high but you expect that for bbq. I usually wait 6 mo and say well let me give them another try. Here is the deal- the owner/manager is just not a nice person. I'm not even sure she realizes it. She talks down to her people and she barks at them. It makes me feel sad for them. Wounderful ending to our day out shopping. We took a chance and came in as first timers here and were not disappointed the fries, fish, okra, pulled pork and chicken were excellent. The ribs jumped off the bone into my mouth and the pickles were so much fun while waiting for our meal, I LOVED THE CHERRY PICKLES! Fantastic barbecue and sides! I'm not sure what it is about barbecue places but it seems like usually if the meat is really good the sides are lacking or vice versa, but at Hickory Roots everything was delicious! My kids loved the macaroni and cheese and okra, my husband and I loved the barbecue and ribs. We are extremely picky because we have a smoker ourselves and usually end up saying we could have made better at home. But not in this case, everyone was so good! My sister in law got the salad bar and said it was fresh and tasty. The staff went above and beyond! Overall one of the best experiences eating out we've had in a long time! The sliced biscuit sandwich was way good (super moist meat--not dry at all), and they had a lot of good side choices--even healthy options.
