Talking to her in a way that was very unpleasant for me as a paying customer when she didn't deserve it when she was doing her job at a great level. Where do I begin. They were out of every beer we asked for. They didn't have bitters for an old fashioned. The worst so called whiskey sour I ever had. Told them the whiskey sour is not good, they took it away but never removed it from the bill. Had the manager come and he said NC regulations wouldn't allow him to remove it from the bill. Asked for the horrible whiskey sour back and he said " we threw it out". He did after some pressing, figure a way to make a change on the bill but that was horrible. The food here, when dining in, is amazing! The value is such that I would eat here every day. I don't have the time for the pace of the service, which is always slow no matter what. It also is very much a bar environment at all hours with the TVs turned up quite loud, which causes everyone else to yell. Still family friendly, but not PTSD-friendly, unfortunately. Great to be back at Hickory Tavern after only six years. Oops. Met a friend here for lunch on a weekday. Not much has changed. It's still sports bar and though not nearly as crowded at this time of the day/season. I had the pimento cheese burger (and brought another cheeseburger home for my wife). The burgers were cooked perfectly, topped well and with a good portion of fries that were hot and also cooked nicely. A very nice meal. I went to Hickory Tavern, while dodging Hurricane Dorian, from their online menu. When I got there they only had a limited late night menu (which was around 10p and wasn't identified online either). They only had 1 non meat option and when I asked for a particular beer they were out of the draft beer also. BUT...the server could tell my disappointment, she told the manager (Steven I think was how name) and he came by to rectify the situation. I ordered the Fish and chips and it was great! More importantly, Steven's willingness to make the night right was even better. When I'm back in Charlotte I'm headed to Hickory Tavern to give a solid try. Dinner at Hickory Tavern was great! Our server Erin was so helpful with our order and coming out to consistently check on us. She also made great suggestions to my little cousin who wasn't feeling well. She wanted to make sure she had something that would be comforting to her. Food tasted great, and I will say they don't have a lot of vegetarian/vegan options available. This should be something the manager could look into expanding on the menu. Restaurant was pretty much empty but for some reason our waitress kept disappearing. I'm sure it's because she was on the phone the entire time. The food was beyond average. The best thing was the Brussels. I kept having to kill some annoying gnats which made me not even want to finish my food. We ordered the cookies after asking the waitress if she recommended them. She came out with burnt cookies, we barely took a bite out of one. To top off the night it took 10 mins trying to find our waitress just to check out. This is going to be a shorter review than normal. Mostly because Hickory Tavern is fairly consistent, both in service and good quality. This is true from visit to visit and location to location. My issue and need to rate stems from a misrepresentation of a beer in the draft beer menu. Now, usually we would have just moved on and drank the beer (we did), but the server proceeded to tell us that she had heard that the beer was wrong earlier, yet let us order it anyways. The appropriate response should've been to take the beer off of the check, NOT let us know that she knew it was wrong already. The beer in question is Carolina Sparkle Party by Legion. It is definitely not an IPA . We drank it because we don't waste beer, but c'mon.. get it together people. read more

I would have to say this restaurant is one of my favorites for amazing food and absolutely amazing service in the area I work in. The GM Barrett is always talking to us and will actually spend the time to speak with every customer. The wait staff is also amazing!! I come here at least once a week and I will say, with the Covid issue going around they really take great premises to make sure everyone is placed around the restaurant in the right places. As of today though, I found my favorite dish. The steak tacos. Substitute the red Chile lime sauce for balsamic glaze, "which the server already said was awesome" and make sure you get the Brussel Sprouts. Out. Standing. Food. And service. Highly recommend. Well I'm officially in a toxic relationship with HT. No matter how bad this place is to me, I eventually come back. Tonight is our first time back since my previous review. I heard they revamped the menu with a focus on taste and quality. Hmmm. To me, the focus is on their bottom line. I get it, restaurants are expensive, streamlined menus are the thing. Fine, but this menu is so many of the same items used over and over - like thinly shaved steak (or whatever they call it) makes an appearance many times. There are many examples of this. Any originality is gone. At any rate, our food was so mediocre. The bbq chicken nachos were 95% chips and bbq sauce. No queso like they used to use and barely any cheese. They did add a lot of sour cream so maybe we were supposed to think that was cheese? The cheesesteak had zero flavor. How is that even possible? I resorted to dipping it in ranch (the thought makes me shudder, but I did it). Ended up just leaving most. The burgers were always a solid here. Often undercooked, but always tasty. No more. The two huge cold onion rings are no sub for the onion straws of old. The two patties are inferior to the previous thick patty. The service was really good, which was a relief. Great location. Came to do some shopping with a friend and decided to stop by for some appetizers and a drink. They were running a $5 dollar special margaritas ( usually special is on Monday and Tuesday ). Got the blackberry and he had a regular lime flavor. Delicious!!! Very friendly staff, we sat at the bar and ERIN took excellent care of us. In the sea of mediocrity that is the South Charlotte sports bar scene, Hickory Tavern consistently stands head and shoulders above the rest, as it is one of the few places here in S CLT that actually delivers on a true sports bar experience complete with tons of TVs (with sound...hey it's more of a challenge here than you may think!), good food at a decent value, nice sized portions, and a diverse drink menu with something for everyone. What sets Hickory Tavern apart from most of the others however is their service, as they have experienced servers who understand the meaning of customer service and going above and beyond to make your experience a positive one (shout out to you Adrian!). Far too often, places rely on the cheap labor that comes with higher younger servers without giving them the shadowing and training they need to understand the importance of being the face of the restaurant, but Hickory Tavern gets it and that is why we will continue to return when we are looking for a solid, consistent place that is family friendly, has good food at a decent value, and most of all makes us feel like they are happy to have us there, because often times places make you feel like a burden when you walk in the door, but not here, so keep up the great work Hickory Tavern! read more

Another update to my last review (I bumped them down to 3 stars due to very poor service after a few times). We waited about a month after they reached out to me to give it a bit of time before we returned. We have since been back a handful of times, and it seems that there might have been a bit of turnover for servers, and we have not had the issues that I stated above. I had a General manager reach out to me to apologize for such poor service time and time again, which I was quite surprised at. He had asked me to introduce myself so that he could personally apologize when I came in next, which I did not do, as I wanted to get a true sense of if the service had changed or not. Went for dinner with friends here on December 30. Even though there were plenty of empty tables, we weren't seated for almost 20 minutes. Our server was excellent. She was attentive and friendly, quick with drink orders and eager to please without being intrusive. The bad part was the food. One of my friends ordered a burger, which came out on a bun so burned that it was literally black. She asked for another, and it was fine. Another ordered the nachos. The cheese was over cooked and the meat was dry. I ordered the wings. The teriyaki sauce was delicious, but the wings were undercooked and I couldn't get but about half of the meat off of the bones. We ordered house-made chips as our side. They came out 15 minutes after our entrees, and were so greasy that they were literally limp. It's especially frustrating because the prices are extremely high for the quality of the food. I am in food service and understand costs have risen. But if you choose to pay them, at least the food you receive should be well prepared. A disappointing experience, except for our server. read more

Ordered lunch from here a month ago or so. Food was really good, and the staff went above and beyond to make sure my delivery got here. So I was looking forward to getting dinner delivered tonight. The delivery itself was good and prompt. My order was correct--it just wasn't good!! Still hot when I got it, but the flounder was a bunch of tiny little 3" pieces, some of which weren't done. The second order was chicken strips, but looked exactly like the fish...certainly NOT the chicken strips pictured that I've experienced before!! The salad looks great as usual. I see they are closing tonight at 9:15 rather than 10, so I'm guessing it's a staffing issue like everyone else is having. Just a bad night, maybe. I will try again, because this was not the norm. This is the place for me to go to when the Packers played before I ordered the NFL tixs on my Direct TV. Not because the food is off the wall great. But it's a great place for some apps, bar food and couple beers. Now if you're taking about good food, no I didn't say all that. It's subpar. Restaurant: 4/5 they tried to keep up with busting tables as much at they can.. I do give them effort in trying especially when that's a game or a fight on. Staffs: 3/5 some staffs can be a little better when it comes to customer service but I never got one that's out right rude or short. All are pleasant! Food: 3/5 as far as bar food. Yes it's ok. I would need a beer to go with it.. I had the crab dip once. Didn't care for it.. my cheeseburger (twice) have ingredient(s) missing from it. Like the grilled onions.. I'm just too annoyed to ask for it.. Had the grilled salmon once.. Pretty dry. I guess they're trying to make sure that piece is die. Their chicken wings (bar food) is pretty good. Stopped by on Mother's Day for a quick lunch with my wife, mom, and step-dad. Having eaten here at least a dozen time, in the past, we have had pretty good service, quick, etc.. Todays visit, it took over an hour to get our food. When it came out all of our plates were cold. While the waitress was polite, this slow service was really unacceptable. For the management: if your kitchen is running that slow please ask the hostess to inform customers when they arrive. The last few times I've ordered it though my salmon has just either not been prepared correctly or didn't taste good. This time it was raw. We went here last night as our power went out once we got home from work and needed something for dinner, as well as a place to hang out since the power was estimated to come back on around 9 p.m. The inside of Hickory Tavern is nice, but I feel like there are better setups with tables and tvs at other sports bars. I think it could be a good go to option for watching a sporting event in the bar area, not the dining area. The food, this is why you get a star Hickory Tavern. Plenty of food options, but why bother if it is crap? I can't speak for it all, but I have no desire to go back because of what I had. I tried the philly steak sandwich with peppers, onions, and cheese. The steak was so incredibly bad. I had a bite or two and was done. It reminded me of the frozen shaved beef you can find at the grocery store, but with an outdated and old flavor. It was so bad, I do not think I have had anything as bad as that sandwich.
