OK, so I'm gonna round up from 4 1/2 stars to give Hidden Fish a 5. The food is spectacular. We had Louis as our chef and he was great about explaining each course as he prepared it. Everything was so thoughtfully presented. The quality of the fish is off the charts superb. The service was excellent as well, attentive without being too present. We had 18 courses and then opted for an additional course because we all wanted to try the scallop. My favorites were the red snapper, the salmon, the black cod, the Toro and the Uni, but they were all great. I especially liked the sear that he gave the fish when he used the torch on a few of the dishes. My only issue with the experience is that it's so quick. They are very upfront about that when you make the reservation and and communicate with you about that well during the meal. They even text before you get there to ask you about pre-ordering drinks and tell you that you are welcome to stay and have a drink in their lounge after. When we were done eating, I didn't really see anywhere that there was a lounge where we could sit. I barely drink any alcohol anymore and we split a bottle of sake and I felt like I had a tiny bit of a buzz and I needed a little bit of time to just kind of chill and chat with my friends, maybe have a dessert or something and let that wear off. Plus we just spent $900+ on dinner for 4 people and because the experience is so engaging we never really had a chance to catch up with each other. I did not feel like the atmosphere there was conducive to that. You finish eating and they hand you the bill and it's like thank you and good night. We ended up walking over to the Mexican restaurant in the parking lot for some french fries and just to chill and chat for a little bit. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to someone looking for a wonderful Omakase experience. Personally, it's not somewhere I would go often, it's a special treat. I would probably skip the alcohol altogether next time and then plan for us to go out to dessert afterwards, somewhere on Convoy Street, since that isn't available there.

Service is super friendly and an overall nice experience, but the caliber of the fish is not quite at the same level of some other local omakase spots despite being similar in price range.

Delicious omakase experience! I had booked reservations to dine here for my fiancé's birthday a few months ago. We love going and exploring different omakase spots, and this one does not disappoint. It was delicious for every bite. It was a bright room, full of wonderful servers and chefs. They also accommodated well to my shellfish allergy and had given me other sashimi options to substitute. I'm so excited to come back when the time comes!

Ate at Hidden Fish last night to celebrate my birthday! My last visit to Hidden Fish was back in 2020. Since 2020 the price for the Omakase has increased. So this is definitely a special occasion only restaurant for me. During the omakase experience, the set up is intimate. They have about 3 sushi chefs, and all of the seating is directly in front of the chefs at the bar. The chefs converse with you as they prepare the sushi. It's a fun experience and relaxing watching the experts at work. Additionally, all of the servers are attentive and also go out of their way to make conversation with you too. It's a very welcoming and inclusive environment. Every single sushi nigiri prepared for the omakase was delicious. The 18 piece - 90 minute omakase is well paced. I also enjoy learning and hearing about where the fish are sourced from and what part of the fish it's from. Some of my favorite notable pieces were the sea bream, the albacore (cold smoked in hickory), and the o toro.

Had a reservation for the 7pm seating for a party of 2 on a Tuesday. There was plenty of parking in the plaza. We started with ordering a carafe of sake. Our server was very helpful in helping us choose one to our liking and it ended up being delicious. The omakase menu is mainly nigiri, with a couple other dishes. Everything was amazing. All the fish was so fresh and tasty and the rice was flavorful and the perfect amount. My highlights were the sea bream, amberjack, Uni + ikura, chu toro, o toro, and toro tartare. Service was amazing. Very attentive from the servers. And the chefs were great at pacing the entire meal to you. You can also order à la carte after the omakase if you want more. Overall I had a great first time here. From the fish to the service, everything was amazing. The price point also isn't as pricey as other omakase places. I can definitely see myself coming back here again. I definitely would recommend try here!

Hidden Fish lives up to its name, tucked discreetly behind El Gordo Mexican restaurant, but once you find it, you're in for something special. This is an intimate 18-course omakase served at a 12-seat counter, with most courses focused on pristine nigiri sushi featuring fish largely flown in from Japan. Every bite was fresh, thoughtful, and beautifully executed. The counter seating creates a relaxed, communal vibe that encourages conversation among guests and interaction with the chef, which really elevates the experience. Service is warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly without ever feeling forced. The sake menu is well-curated, the space and decor are elegant yet comfortable, and pricing feels very appropriate for the quality and care that goes into each course. The menu changes constantly, and I loved every course--no filler, all hits. Parking is easy once you know where you're going, and while finding it feels like a secret mission, it's absolutely worth it. I'll be back on my next trip to San Diego... assuming I can snag a seat. Reservations are a must.

Was able to get reservations for late dinner about a week out. The 18 course omakase moved at a quick pace which was nice. The chefs were very friendly. The service was top notch with them coming by checking in and filing drinks often. Overall, everything tasted good. The rice is a little bit too sweet and some of the sushi was over sauced so you can't taste the fish itself. Food 3.5. Service 4.5. Overall 4.

I want to hear tonight for a date night and it was awesome! It's located in an unassuming strip mall and pretty nondescript exterior. But when you get inside it's clearly modern and luxurious. The service was impeccable. They passed my water refill test with flying colors and the ginger was always quickly refreshed . As for the food it was also high quality and excellent. They had all the different options for fresh fish including your normal uni, otoro, and yellow tails along with other unique actions like sea bream. Plus the preparations were very interesting. For instance they had a soy-based chimichurri that was excellent! I definitely recommend this place for a nice date night. It's pricey but you get what you pay for.

Food: 4.95/5 hands down best quality sushi in SD. The Nigiris were all super fresh. Overnight shipping from Japan and other countries Ambiance: 4/5 a little loud but cozy. There were only about 12-14 people for each dinner sitting. Service: servers were all very attentive. Very nice. It was fun to see chefs making sushi

Hidden fish caters to the ultra-hip omakase crowd. The interior Is designed with constraint, almost completely devoid of features, highlighting the chefs quietly tending to the procession of food nuggets offered one by one to the seated crowd. The choice of wood, however, screams "unfinished plywood" and could have easily been replaced with a Japanese themed wood, emoting elegance over practicality. The food, however, is the real star. Tiny bites offered one by one, with an almost whisper "barracuda from Japan... salmon from New Zealand..." Each fish gets its own treatment of garnish, finish, temperature and sauce. And out of the 17 pieces offered, most were very successful combinations, opting for flavors that compliment and don't overwhelm the fish. In between food offerings, staff are encouraged to make small talk. "Where in town are you from? What's your favorite restaurant there? Do you know of a good coffee place?" were some of the questions asked, and while they were polite, they sounded a bit forced and rehearsed, rather than showing true interest. A couple of the nigiri bites were life-affirming. Perfect in texture, temperature and vibe. Others, good, but nothing special. Bottom line: food was amazing, service pleasant, and cost was prohibitively expensive!

We had dinner at HitoKuchi a few weeks ago and had no idea that Chef John also owned Hidden Fish. We had such a fabulous time at Hitokuchi, we had to try Hidden Fish. The people make the experience ten times more amazing than it already is. They are all so friendly and kind and funny and talkative. We absolutely loved everyone! The sushi was so fresh and everything was well balanced and lovely. Chef Louie was our sushi chef and we absolute loved him. He has been working with Chef John for about 11 years. He was funny, friendly and explained everything we were eating. You go through the course menu and then at the end they leave time for you to order add-ons and revisit pieces you have previously had. We definitely added on and revisited quite a few pieces that we just couldn't get enough of. Keep in mind you pay for the revisits and add ins. We shall return!!

1st omakase experience and wow it didn't disappoint. The fish quality was exceptional and the service was grade A. The ratio of customers to staff was around 2:1 making sure you had everything taken care of. We got to try 18 different pieces starting with white fish and ending with tuna and sea urchin.

First fancy omakase experience and I will say - it definitely felt like an experience. Our chef, Steven, and our waitress, Sammie, were great! They made great conversation while also allowing us to enjoy each course. My boyfriend and I went here for our anniversary and loved it. The food was fresh and so good and each course was explained to us by Chef Steven. He was super attentive and checked in on us throughout the courses. My favorite was hands down the bluefin tuna - best thing I've ever had. Would definitely recommend this place for a special occasion or just cause! They have some specials up as well to order from. Overall great environment, great food, and great company.

The food, I will comment on just generally as the menu is constantly changing (as is the case with many omakase): each dish was composed of pieces that complemented each other well and created a cohesive flavor pallette. Each nigiri was artfully prepared that emphased the quality and cut of the fish, and were complemented by flavors to further highlight that. The flow of the evening was non-traditional omakase, but it felt perfect. Price ($180pp) is not for the faint of heart, but is cheaper than others I've seen. Made the reservatiin online at the beginning of March for an omakase seating in April to celebrate husband's bday. They had a 5:15pm seating on a weekday at the sushi counter. Other options are the table and outside patio, however, for omakase, I always prefer the counter/bar. Unlike other omakase restaurants, Soichi offers their full vs petite vs nigiri only omakases at variable times (not limited to 2 seating times like others). You can also enjoy any of these omakases or order a la carte or both at the tables and outside patio also. The ambiance is bright and full of energy. Can get a bit loud with people talking, but didn't bother me. Parking is street parking. No designated lot. We found one a little down the street and walked over, which worked out. There is a park down the street and street parking around it. I recommend arriving earlier to find parking though, just in case. Restaurant is small inside, but clean and cozy. We arrived 15min early, and they seated us. The staff were all friendly. They all spoke Japanese to each other, which also felt more authentic. Our omakase chef was Daniel today. He was very nice, friendly, professional, and skilled. When we had questions, he answered them promptly and kindly. He also checked in with us to ensure the ratio of rice and sashimi was OK for us (of course it was). They served on unique plates too. Everything tasted so fresh and smooth. Some items were also unique compared to other omakase restaurants. The chawanmushj was also piping hot when served, so it also tasted fresh. They have barley tea here too and not just green tea. They offer a la carte at the end of the omakase course if we like, but I was too full. My husband ordered a tuna maki roll, which he thought tasted great. The dessert was also yum! Hojicha ice cream was very tasty! I recommend! They sang the happy bday song for the bday folks, where the senior chef (perhaps the owner?) played the ukelele/guitar and sang happy bday with the rest of us guests. Thought that was really neat. I recommend Soichi! Shout out to Chef Daniel!

Definitely 5 stars if compared to all restaurants, but 4 stars if compared to other omakase…read more Came at one of the first seating (4:30pm) on a Saturday for the full omakase. The service and partnership between the sushi chef and the wait staff was fantastic and every interaction was well thought out. The appetizer wasn't my cup of tea, but the sashimi, nigiri, grilled fish, chawanmushi were really good. The assortment of fish (at least for this season) wasn't my favorite (featuring sardines, mackerel, etc.) when I would have loved some yellowtail and salmon belly. We ordered a negitoro cut roll a la carte because we were still a little hungry - this was super tasty as the quality of the tuna/toro is top notch. For dessert, they had 4 flavors of homemade ice cream to pick from. The sesame was incredible and the roasted green tea really good too. I feel like most of the omakase I've been to have 2-3 seating for dinner, so all the customers for that time arrive at the same time and everyone is at the same point of the omakase. At Soichi, it seems like each party has their reservation at a different time (4:30, 4:45, 5:00, etc.) so each group is at a different part of their meal, not to mention some parties that ordered a la carte or a different omakase menu (sushi only option, etc.) As a result, the chef is bouncing around working on a bunch of different items, and we had to wait quite a bit for each of our nigiri courses. The whole meal took 2.5 hours. We also felt less of that group vibe with other parties that is common in other omakases. Overall, we still had a really lovely time and glad we got to try it!,

All delicious and wish I could've gotten seconds! - Sashimi: Chef's selection of 4 different sashimi with a side of seaweed. I enjoyed them all but my favorite are the toro and amaebi. Love that they also fried the shrimp head and gave us a choice of salt & lemon or ponzu sauce to pair with it! - Yakimono: Grilled cod with asparagus, crispy fried lotus root, and goji berries. The cod was so buttery and cooked to perfection. - Nigiri: 9 piece nigiri chef's selection. All were super fresh, melts in your mouth, and of course delicious! - Uni wrap: I'm not sure if this was part of the nigiri or its own course, but chef let us try San Diego Uni & Hokkaido Uni! Both incredibly yummy. I feel like the SD Uni has a nice sweetness while the Hokkaido Uni has a slight bitterness. My group mostly liked the Hokkaido Uni. - Chawanmushi: Very flavorful and silky as I think they added dashi to enhance the egg. - Soup: Red miso clam soup (Nagoya style) was delicious. Super comforting and savory to end the course out before dessert. - Dessert: Hojicha Panna Cotta with strawberries! I usually don't like the desserts at most omakases, but I loved this! Great balance of light sweetness of the Panna Cotta with the sweet and acidity from the strawberries. [Service] - Friendly, charming, attentive, helpful - Shoutout to our Chef, Hiro-San & server Ken-San for making sure our experience was beyond amazing! Thank you! [Ambiance] - Classy, upscale, intimate - Has sushi bar & patio seating [Overall] - Made reservations for a party of 6 for my bf's bday and they definitely made it special! I love that they took pics for us with the chefs and even gave us a print out with a stand. So cute! - Would definitely come back for the food, vibes, and great service! - Each season they have a different menu, if you had all 4 on your stamp card, you'd receive a little gift! I definitely would love to try all 4 seasons but unfortunately I don't live around the area.

Ichifuji has routinely been one of the personal favorites of many users. I booked a reservation. It was about $160 before tax and tip. Definitely a lot cheaper than most of the Chicago ones and the quality of each course was exceptional. Our chef had a great sense of humor. Everyone was pleasant to talk to. I recommend coming here early before your reservation to secure a parking spot, at least an hour or more. The lot is shared with a Vietnamese restaurant and the parking lot is already small. We thought about parking in the bigger lot to the right but was unsure due to the towing signs. We're from out of State so we didn't want to risk it. If you have the money to spare with no kids, I recommend coming here.

It looks like most of the other tables were reserved for reservations. The decor is modern and very clean and chic. They also had a high chair and was accommodating with our baby. Food was incredible and the quality of the fish is evident throughout. We started with the mixed shrimp and vegetable tempura - light crispy batter, really good. The sashimi champaloo came with 12 pieces of sashimi, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and the fish of the day was albacore. For rolls, we got the Luna Lemon, Maru's Sushi Toro, and Hamachi Hiro. The rolls were a good size and I loved how each had a fun twist (but at the same time not TOO crazy with their combinations like some other sushi places). You can tell it was designed with intention and each roll had a nice balance. The Luna Lemon roll was great with spicy tuna inside, salmon outside, and the soy dressing and shallot oil put it over the top. The Maru's Sushi - Toro roll looked so good in the photos so I knew we had to order it. The negitoro was delicious and did not disappoint. The Hamachi Hiro roll was hearty and loved the combination of yellowtail outside the shrimp tempura in the inside. We were blown away by how fast the service is. The staff was friendly and on top of everything, and the food came out REALLY fast. For example, when we ordered an extra roll at the end, it came out in maybe 3 minutes and we were shocked. Highly recommend!

They also have a rotating specials menu so there's different seafood options to try for your sushi and also cooked options. My go to is the chirashi bowl. Good portions and delicious sashimi! Sushi is one of my favorite foods, so I don't say it lightly :). I have brought family and friends back here too My brother in law brought his kid and tried the chicken of the sea nuggets (tuna) and even I loved them! Friendly service, although sometimes food takes a while to come out. The parking is plentiful, in a plaza parking lot. Good ambiance for a bit more casual date night that's cozy!
