We've tried quite a few omakases like this and this might move into our top spot. Staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly through the entire experience and it felt like a lot of the guests knew each other and staff from coming in regularly. Every piece of nigiri was perfect and the order they went in was very deliberate and planned out. My drinks were never empty and if even the smallest speck of rice fell onto the counter, someone came by to clean it almost instantly. The sushi chef also noticed that I was left handed and placed all of my pieces on my plate so that it was easier to grab with my left hand. Excellent quality and tons of attention to detail!

We got lucky with reservations! Our friend was able to secure 3 seats for hidden fish and we were so excited!! The seating is around the sushi chefs and quite intimate. 12-13 seats in the room. Room was bright and airy. The omakase was 18 piece for around 1-1.5 hours. Well paced. Fresh seafood and nice balance of taste! The chefs tell you where eat fish was sourced and the staff are able to answer if we had any questions. Nice that the staff were attentive and water was constantly replenished. My top faves were the uni + ikura, black cod, otoro!

OK, so I'm gonna round up from 4 1/2 stars to give Hidden Fish a 5. The food is spectacular. We had Louis as our chef and he was great about explaining each course as he prepared it. Everything was so thoughtfully presented. The quality of the fish is off the charts superb. The service was excellent as well, attentive without being too present. We had 18 courses and then opted for an additional course because we all wanted to try the scallop. My favorites were the red snapper, the salmon, the black cod, the Toro and the Uni, but they were all great. I especially liked the sear that he gave the fish when he used the torch on a few of the dishes. My only issue with the experience is that it's so quick. They are very upfront about that when you make the reservation and and communicate with you about that well during the meal. They even text before you get there to ask you about pre-ordering drinks and tell you that you are welcome to stay and have a drink in their lounge after. When we were done eating, I didn't really see anywhere that there was a lounge where we could sit. I barely drink any alcohol anymore and we split a bottle of sake and I felt like I had a tiny bit of a buzz and I needed a little bit of time to just kind of chill and chat with my friends, maybe have a dessert or something and let that wear off. Plus we just spent $900+ on dinner for 4 people and because the experience is so engaging we never really had a chance to catch up with each other. I did not feel like the atmosphere there was conducive to that. You finish eating and they hand you the bill and it's like thank you and good night. We ended up walking over to the Mexican restaurant in the parking lot for some french fries and just to chill and chat for a little bit. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to someone looking for a wonderful Omakase experience. Personally, it's not somewhere I would go often, it's a special treat. I would probably skip the alcohol altogether next time and then plan for us to go out to dessert afterwards, somewhere on Convoy Street, since that isn't available there.

I really enjoyed our time dining here! The location itself really is hidden--you would barely be able to see it just driving on Convoy. I liked that the location has an ADA ramp as the main entrance. The food was amazing. I really enjoyed the albacore!! Slightly smoky, amazing flavor. You can order a la carte at the end, which we fully took advantage of. No dessert menu at the end. But it's okay because it's on Convoy anyway. Jenny was our server and she was really nice! Tips to save for next time: -Ask for tap water. I ordered still water and didn't realize that defaults to glass bottled water. -POS calculated tip based on total, instead of subtotal like it should be. Do your own math when calculating the tip! It really frustrates me that POSs are doing this because it is creating a culture where tip on total is the norm. No! It is supposed to be on subtotal.

Delicious omakase experience! I had booked reservations to dine here for my fiancé's birthday a few months ago. We love going and exploring different omakase spots, and this one does not disappoint. It was delicious for every bite. It was a bright room, full of wonderful servers and chefs. They also accommodated well to my shellfish allergy and had given me other sashimi options to substitute. I'm so excited to come back when the time comes!

Service is super friendly and an overall nice experience, but the caliber of the fish is not quite at the same level of some other local omakase spots despite being similar in price range.

Ate at Hidden Fish last night to celebrate my birthday! My last visit to Hidden Fish was back in 2020. Since 2020 the price for the Omakase has increased. So this is definitely a special occasion only restaurant for me. During the omakase experience, the set up is intimate. They have about 3 sushi chefs, and all of the seating is directly in front of the chefs at the bar. The chefs converse with you as they prepare the sushi. It's a fun experience and relaxing watching the experts at work. Additionally, all of the servers are attentive and also go out of their way to make conversation with you too. It's a very welcoming and inclusive environment. Every single sushi nigiri prepared for the omakase was delicious. The 18 piece - 90 minute omakase is well paced. I also enjoy learning and hearing about where the fish are sourced from and what part of the fish it's from. Some of my favorite notable pieces were the sea bream, the albacore (cold smoked in hickory), and the o toro.

Had a reservation for the 7pm seating for a party of 2 on a Tuesday. There was plenty of parking in the plaza. We started with ordering a carafe of sake. Our server was very helpful in helping us choose one to our liking and it ended up being delicious. The omakase menu is mainly nigiri, with a couple other dishes. Everything was amazing. All the fish was so fresh and tasty and the rice was flavorful and the perfect amount. My highlights were the sea bream, amberjack, Uni + ikura, chu toro, o toro, and toro tartare. Service was amazing. Very attentive from the servers. And the chefs were great at pacing the entire meal to you. You can also order à la carte after the omakase if you want more. Overall I had a great first time here. From the fish to the service, everything was amazing. The price point also isn't as pricey as other omakase places. I can definitely see myself coming back here again. I definitely would recommend try here!

I have been to this place a few times now, and it continues to be my favorite sushi spot for a celebration, or a date. It's definitely not the most economical place for a meal, but in my opinion, the money and time spent here is worth it. 1.) The decor: minimalistic, and modern, 2.) The ambiance: warm and welcoming. 3.) The sushi chef and waitstaff: super attentive. 4.) The food: phenomenal Chef Peter has been my sushi chef the last two times, and the man does not miss. He knocked it out of the park both times. He puts a great deal of care in what he does, and he makes the entire experience very pleasant. He immediately noticed which hand I was picking up my sushi with, and adjusted the orientation of how he would place them on the plate for me so I would have an easier time. He engages in just enough small talk to keep the customer's engaged without taking over the experience. The waitstaff have great recommendations for sake pairings with the menu and incorporate the customer's preferences flawlessly. My girlfriend and I aren't terribly big on sake, but we decided to get a bottle based on the waiter's recommendation, and it worked beautifully. They are also ready to fill up waters, provide wet wipes and clean up any trash as soon as it is needed. The first couple of times I came here, my favorite sushi was a black cod piece they had that unfortunately wasn't available this last time however, it mattered little. Every piece of sushi was wonderful in its own right, and I have absolutely 0 complaints. Some highlights were the o toro, the uni+ikura, the sea bream and last but not least the striped bass. I am already looking forward to our next visit.

Hidden Fish lives up to its name, tucked discreetly behind El Gordo Mexican restaurant, but once you find it, you're in for something special. This is an intimate 18-course omakase served at a 12-seat counter, with most courses focused on pristine nigiri sushi featuring fish largely flown in from Japan. Every bite was fresh, thoughtful, and beautifully executed. The counter seating creates a relaxed, communal vibe that encourages conversation among guests and interaction with the chef, which really elevates the experience. Service is warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly without ever feeling forced. The sake menu is well-curated, the space and decor are elegant yet comfortable, and pricing feels very appropriate for the quality and care that goes into each course. The menu changes constantly, and I loved every course--no filler, all hits. Parking is easy once you know where you're going, and while finding it feels like a secret mission, it's absolutely worth it. I'll be back on my next trip to San Diego... assuming I can snag a seat. Reservations are a must.

Was able to get reservations for late dinner about a week out. The 18 course omakase moved at a quick pace which was nice. The chefs were very friendly. The service was top notch with them coming by checking in and filing drinks often. Overall, everything tasted good. The rice is a little bit too sweet and some of the sushi was over sauced so you can't taste the fish itself. Food 3.5. Service 4.5. Overall 4.

I want to hear tonight for a date night and it was awesome! It's located in an unassuming strip mall and pretty nondescript exterior. But when you get inside it's clearly modern and luxurious. The service was impeccable. They passed my water refill test with flying colors and the ginger was always quickly refreshed . As for the food it was also high quality and excellent. They had all the different options for fresh fish including your normal uni, otoro, and yellow tails along with other unique actions like sea bream. Plus the preparations were very interesting. For instance they had a soy-based chimichurri that was excellent! I definitely recommend this place for a nice date night. It's pricey but you get what you pay for.

Food: 4.95/5 hands down best quality sushi in SD. The Nigiris were all super fresh. Overnight shipping from Japan and other countries Ambiance: 4/5 a little loud but cozy. There were only about 12-14 people for each dinner sitting. Service: servers were all very attentive. Very nice. It was fun to see chefs making sushi

    How's the parking there?

Reasonable and there is street parking too. We've never had trouble finding a place.

    Is there a dress code?

No, there are no dress code.

    What is the omakase pricing?

135/pp for their 90-minute omakase dinner

    Do they have unseared albacore?

The menu always changes. It's omakase so there are times they have albacore and times they don't. If they have it I'm sure you can request it unseared.

    Do you offer ayce sushi?

Nope, they do a preset 18-course omakase for their nigiri/sushi. No Ayce sushi.

He was incredibly attentive, and was an amazing waiter. Josh gave us time to look over the menus, efficiently put in the orders, and gracefully tended to our whole group throughout the whole lunch. He even gave a complimentary birthday dessert which was a deep fried tempura ice cream. We all got to eat a few spoonfuls, and it was delicious! I ordered the chicken katsu curry with salad ($17.50). For the bento, I selected the sides 4 piece California roll ($2.95) and shrimp and veggie tempura ($2.95). I really like how the curry came on the side so that the chicken katsu didn't get soggy. The California roll was fresh, and the tempura was pretty crispy. The second time, we ordered takeout. For our group of 4, we ordered: -salmon teriyaki bento box: The salmon teriyaki was actually one of the best I've ever had. It was juicy and very flavorful. -2 chicken katsu curry bento boxes: This was almost as good as when I dined in the first time. The katsu tasted more crispy in the restaurant, but that's to be expected. For one of our bento boxes, we upgraded our side to yellowtail sashimi (3 pieces for about $5 more). The sashimi was very fresh and well worth the upgrade. -yellowtail nigiri (2 pieces for $8.40): This was good but not as thick and high quality as the yellowtail sashimi. I'd recommend ordering the yellowtail sashimi instead of the nigiri. -new style salmon sashimi (7 pieces for $18.95): These were thinly sliced pieces of salmon that were marinated in sauce, green onions, and garlic. While it was tasty, I feel like it would have been best with thicker cuts of salmon. Overall, Kumi Sushi Grill offers a wide variety of delicious options, and I'd happily return for both dine in and takeout.

The fresh wasabi paired perfectly with every bite. -Bara chirashi: This was hands down the most beautifully presented dish. I loved the balance between the sashimi and rice, so every bite had a great ratio of both. -Sashimi mix: This was also very good, but I'd recommend spending a little extra for the deluxe sashimi mix.
