3.5 / 5 stars This is a nice little bar in a not-so-busy area near Union Square. You can walk upstairs or downstairs to either bar, and there is a backyard with some outdoor furniture. There are not really any lights in the backyard so once the sun sets it is very dark and you're surrounded by tall residential buildings. This bar is definitely not accessible in any way - there are stairs to both bars and to get to outdoor space, and the bathroom is extremely narrow. There was also no soap in the bathroom when we were there at 6pm. No dispenser or bottle under the sink cabinet. Hidden Lane is great for their happy hour which goes from 5-8pm - notably longer than most bars, and the drink deals are pretty good. There are a lot of slightly different tweaks on classic drinks which are fun - like a coconut espresso martini or a dirty martini with carrot brine instead of olive juice. There is no food here and not many wine options, it is definitely a craft cocktail bar. read more

I came after not being able to find a seat at another bar nearby and was gunning for that last happy hour hour during the week. The bartender was standing awkwardly at the furthest side of the bar staring at her phone, so I asked Could I get a drink? She looked up with a fake smile on her face, pissed off I'd broken her reverie, and walked the other way so I asked some other patrons what was going on. It was truly weird, and something I had never experienced in this city... ever. A normal bartender would've joked or explained themselves "I'm so sorry I've been having a bad day," "My boyfriend broke up with me," or "I didn't get into acting school." I frequent this place from time to time, as it's a stone's throw away from my old apartment. Quaint and quiet during the earlier part of the week, more bustling from Wed-Sat. This place is so aptly named for their quaint backyard, which does feel like a hidden lane located right off Union Square. Passing by it or even stepping into the main bar area I would not be able to tell there lies a charming oasis with lush greenery and plenty of seating, from bar stools to larger bench seating and tables. I was here with a large friend group, and we were able to take over multiple sections of their backyard and indoor space with no fuss, as it wasn't crazy crowded even on the temperate Saturday night we were there, but I think we may have just been lucky. I could see this place getting pretty packed on weekends given it's location and great backyard space, but maybe their second floor helps them deal well with overflow. I didn't even get to check out their other floor but reviews make it sound well worth a visit. Drinks are standard, nothing revolutionary but the prices are great, particularly during happy hour. If I were going into the office, you'd regularly find me in their patio sipping on $9 margaritas at least once a week. read more

The bartender woman was rude to us and said "are you going to tip this time?" Whole time we were going to order again and tip in cash at the end. Meanwhile she was too busy on her phone doing her Duolingo lessons. We work in customer service too but we would never guilt someone into giving a tip or making them feel bad about it. The way she said it was super passive aggressive, and regardless you should never say that to a customer. If you need your tips that bad get another job it's really not that hard. I came here for happy hour with friends when they opened at 5 pm. The upstairs was closed for a private event (a group was doing a murder mystery activity). The bar is long/vertical and dark. There are some high top tables in the back and then that leads to the outdoor patio. The outdoor patio looks much bigger in person but in reality it's kinda small. We're lucky we got there early enough to get seats because would walk in and see how crowded the patio was as would leave. You order at the bar and then seat yourself. I got a spritz and my friends got spicy margaritas. During Happy Hour, cocktails are $2 off and the spicy margs are $8. My friend said she wishes they played music outside because that would have added to the vibe. They also have no food here so we were starving and got food nearby after. read more

I like to leave reviews for how things are in comparison to how they're presented. This is designed to be an underground small intimate style venue, and it was. Drinks were delicious and it's a nice ambiance down there. Only thing which was annoying was how loud it very quickly got. Went for a one on one date for a chill spot, but there was a group that came for after work happy hour drinks and it was almost impossible to have a normal voice conversation. Not sure there's anything the bar can do about that, but worth noting. read more

This bar has two floors. The downstairs bar has low ceilings and is quite dark and cramped. There are a few tables in the back but it gets crowded quickly. Upstairs, they have a long couch with several tables and chairs. They also have an outdoor patio but it was closed for the winter. For happy hour, they have margaritas for $8 and $2 off of regular cocktails. The spicy margarita had fresh jalapeño and a salt rim. It was refreshing but not very spicy. I also tried the Sgt Pepper. It had a smoky, bold mezcal flavor but the other ingredients were very subtle. My sister got the Bramble and enjoyed the uniqueness of the jam, which wasn't overly sweet. We initially sat upstairs. It was a bit drafty by the patio door. It was reserved for a private party later in the evening so we had to relocate after about an hour. An average NYC Bar. This is a small, hole-in-the wall type of bar that I've been to a couple of times with friends and co workers after work. It is pretty dim inside but they do have a nice outside patio bar. It's pretty on par in terms of prices for what you'd find at other bars in the area. I feel like every time I go, they have a completely different drink menu. Service is a little slow, but that's because it's always jammed pack, so nothing on the bartenders, but be prepared to wait. Hidden Lane is a gem. I can't believe i walked past here all this time. Located in what i like to call a tree house (it just gives me that energy lol) , it does appear to be hidden. When you walk in there are two floors that both lead into a nice backyard! They allow outside food and those happy hour drinks are . My first time at hidden, I drank several spicy margaritas that didn't have that cheap taste feeling and hence why i kept going back for more. Stumbled upon this bar on the way to the subway and saw that they have happy hour, so I decided to see what this bar is. Happy hour is Monday to Friday 5-8pm and it was fairly crowded and busy. They have 2 stories and also outdoor seating, with different ambience. I personally got the spicy margarita which was $8 and it was decent, but a little watered down so not as good as a standard cocktail. Also, the salt rim is the fine salt, not the rock salt, so it made the drink a bit salty. Otherwise, the prices are good and a decent option of a bar if you want a quick drink and don't want to make reservations at some of the bars nearby. read more

Hidden Lane agreed to host an honoring for a death anniversary of our friend via email on a Wednesday night at 7 pm for 20-30 people. In fact, they said they were honored to host this event and the email subject heading was "honoring" after I explained to them that our friend passed away last year and we wanted to gather friends together to celebrate his life. Once Hidden Lane agreed to a cash bar event, and I relied on that promise, I invited 30+ people to the venue. Hidden Lane then follows up three days before the event saying that they can do it for a $1,500 minimum. As soon as I inquired about the price tag, they followed up to apologize that someone else just booked the event for $1,500 that night at that time. When I inquired regarding the double booking they said the agreement isn't made until a contract is signed. Because of the fact that they never initially asked me to sign a contract, it leads me to believe that they got another inquiry, leveraged the two opportunities, and decided to take the latter inquiry in order to maximize profits. As an attorney, I know this to be legally inaccurate. They tried to modify our contract days before the event and then illegally terminated it the moment we inquired about price to secure a $1,500 guaranteed payment. Imagine booking a reservation at a restaurant and then they reached out last minute to see if you'd sign a contract for $1,500 after they said they were honored to host this event and knew that the purpose of the event was to honor your friend? This is not only bad faith, but in my opinion because of the circumstances surrounding the context of the event, it may rise to grossly negligent, wonton behavior. When I tried to reason with Hidden Lane, they apologized and said they can move the Wednesday event to anytime before 5:30, as if people were not working that date and could take off for this event with such late notice. ANYWAYS, luckily last minute I was able to book a private upstairs room at Mason Jar for 30 people. The staff and Managment were lovely and didn't ask for any minimum requirement. Around 40-50 people turned out, larger than expected, and we ended up spending much more than Hidden Lane's $1,500 minimum so karma to them and F@$K Hidden Lane. If you're considering booking an event here, I'd say move it to Mason Jar. Also, please see some of the other one-star reviews attached where they repeated this type or engaged in other similar poor conduct. read more

Great happy hour deal for a Union Square location! I got the bartender's choice and he made me a tasty fruity cocktail. The space is long but rather narrow; however, there are two floors - each with its own bar - and an outdoor garden. Vibe is super lively albeit casual, and it does get loud. They also have live music and trivia nights. There's a lost and found closet which is super helpful if you're forgetful like me!! Looking forward to coming back for the outdoor space when it's warmer. read more

I arrived right when they opened at 5:00pm on a Tuesday and a couple of people were lined up waiting to get inside -- everyone definitely rushed to the back, understandably, because the back patio is a super cute place to sit and it's pretty quiet compared to the noise going on in the street on the other side of the building. This place has a nice drink selection BUT NO FOOD! I assume they allow outside food because they don't even have chips for sale so you can consider this place a pre-game spot or a winding-down-after-work spot. Came here to grab a drink with a friend before a show in Irving Plaza with the idea of taking advantage of a late Happy Hour on a Friday night! I got a Spicy Margarita on the rocks for a cheap price of $8 and sat in their back patio. The ambiance is really nice in the patio if you're able to score some seats. Shortly after Happy Hour ended, the bar itself became more packed and became difficult to go through due to the narrow bar. This place may be difficult to be comfortable if you have a large group but great if you have a small group! read more

Admittingly, I don't frequent Union Square as much in recent years than I probably did earlier in the 2010s. Maybe it's being old, but maybe it's also trying to frequent other unseen spots in NYC. So when a few people at work want to hang out for happy hour and suggest a place in Union Square, I figure what's the harm with that? We got there right when the bar opened at 5. The happy hour from 5-8pm was definitely generous and super affordable, but passing on the happy hour special of bud light/narragansett beers w/shots allowed me to enjoy some of the finer things of this place. The real sell for everyone has to be the patio. Just a perfect, quiet place to hang out at in the afternoon/evening. Almost makes you forget that you're in Manhattan. There are some bars in Astoria that have that type of feeling too with their outdoor spaces. Hidden Lance reminded me of Astoria bars, in a great way. Highly recommend returning here. read more

I'm old enough to remember when this was Revival Bar, and then Mercy Bar. I'm wondering if it's the same owners, or the hidden location of this bar causing turn over like crazy. I'm a bit bias, because I've been here a bunch when it was the prior bars. I've even hosted Christmas parties here. I was glad to see it survived COVID, even if some kind of way. The interior is much the same. The downstairs bar has a tacky neon sign backwash. And the bathrooms have a terrible wallpaper. But the drinks are much better. I do like that Hidden Lane does reference how low key this place is. The area is so dead, especially with SIDEBAR being closed. It's a perfect spot to chill out in, especially during happy hour. I arrived by myself on a Saturday night and gradually my friends join me. The bartender was chill, quick, and good. I wish the drinks were a bit cheaper. They're good but not SUPER amazing. Next time, I'll swing by during happy hour. Always a great bar to have in your back pocket. Hidden Lane is such a cool NYC spot with a Happy Hour menu that slaps and a cute little outdoor area to relax on. My friend brought my husband and I here when we were visiting NYC and we are so happy we were able to snag a table here. We went here a little after the work day and it was already pretty busy. We came at the perfect time because when we left it was SUPER packed. This place really is a hidden gem and we definitely took advantage of the happy hour. We had so many margaritas! The regular menu is a little pricey, but the drinks were yummy! Only complaint and maybe this is just a NYC thing, but the employees had to go down to the basement to get something and if I was even more drunk I would have accidentally fallen down that shaft. read more
