It has a nice pond and lots of pop ups. We made the mistake of buying the Apple Pie for thanksgiving. It was bland, soft and not good. There was also right-wing propaganda on aprons they were selling and some of the people that were running their pop ups were unfriendly. Ruined the natural fall beauty for us. read more

I would say that this is one of the biggest spots to stop by in regards to having the most vendors to shop around and look at things, as well as one of the bigger restaurants to go into with seats inside to eat at. The food is like every other place, burgers, fries and chili. There are tables and benches outside all over the place as well surrounding the pond with ducks to watch and feed. They sell pies by the slice and there is a place just for pie sale outside of the restaurant if the line is too long inside. There are lots of parking in between all of the apple trees on dirt. Wear boots if it's been raining. There are definitely parking attendants leading you to the lanes as well, many of the rows in the first half are for handicapped and that is really nice for those in need of it. read more

OH! Autumn traditions happens here every year! Lots of apples. Apples everything! Apple pie, apple donuts, caramel apple, apple cider... goodness. The scenery is also very beautiful. The trees are changing colors, the weather is cooling down, an the apples are ripe for picking! But beware, EVERYBODY COMES HERE! If you come on a weekend, it will be crowded. Parking will be insanely hard to find, and the lines will be long for any food you want to buy. I highly suggest coming here on a weekday if possible. If not, go early in the morning!!There's also a few shops and vendors set up as well. Many arts and crafts for you to see and buy. And some are truly one of a kind. I've been wanting to go to "Apple Hill" for years, but when looking at the Apple Hill website and the many apple orchards, I found it a bit overwhelming since I couldn't figure out which apple orchards to go to! Thank goodness for social media where several friends and family members would post pictures from Apple Hill. I asked a few of them which ones they suggest we visit.... A friend of mine recommended High Hill Ranch and my hubby and I visited the Saturday after Halloween and since it was a weekend, we expected it to be very crowded, but it wasn't. We did arrive pretty early, sometime before 9AM, so we were able to buy donuts and coffee and there were plenty of vacant picnic tables to chose from. I was able to enjoy our variety of donuts and coffee while taking in the beautiful scenery. I loved checking out all the local artists and vendor booths. I really can't believe it was my first time at Apple Hill and glad we chose High Hill as the first of 3 apple orchards we visited that day. Looking forward to going back!!! read more

I got up there and there was zero social distancing being enforced. People everywhere. Some with masks and some without. I left immediately. Early trip up to Apple Hill & we were not disappointed. Not too crowded yet, that was a real plus! So much food to choose from. Vendors selling so many items. JK, Trixie & I had a wonderful day. Candle making, hay rides, face painting, shopping, eating, fishing and sadly, pony rides. Not a fan of that... Seeing them going around & around all damn day long! This is one of our favorite place to go for various varieties of apples, apple fritters, fresh apple juice & apple donuts. Our ultimate favorite for apple fritters and apple juice for sure. We also like to lunch here too while picking up all our apple goodies. In one of the buildings, they serve roasted chicken plates, tri-tip sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, burgers (including waygu and Kobe beef burgers), hot dogs, veggie burgers, french fries and chili cheese fries just to name some. I had a delicious tri-tip sandwich this time which was loaded with sliced Tri-tip and drizzled with just the right amount of bbq sauce. No matter what day of week it is, it is always busy here during the fall season! There are lots of neat vendors scattered all over selling all sorts of unique crafts and paintings. There is also a nice picnic area alongside a cute lil pond where you can rent fishing poles to go fishing in. Down the road, you can also find a carousel of miniature horses in which kids can pay to ride. On the other end is some more shops including a chocolate shop selling scrumptious chocolates and candies. Next to this shop, you can find a harpist playing beautiful music and at times letting the kids play and learn on it. This was my friend and I's last stop at Apple Hill and it was great! Beautiful area and views! They have a little pond you can fish at and the view is great. There is also a shopping area with a lot of little tents set up selling all kinds of art and other goodies. There is a tent that is closer to the pond area where you can make your own candle. They had some fun ones you could do - I would've done it if I had room in my suitcase. They have a fairly large market area where you can buy so many variations of apples (I didn't know there were so many!), gourmet goods and so much more. I'm impressed with all they have to offer here. Like I said, if I had more room in my luggage I would have bought some gourmet goodies! Also, inside their market they have a place you can buy desserts (donuts, etc). There is a building near the tents where you can buy apple cider too. I sampled some and it was yummy! Last year we went to every apple farm that was serving donuts to try them out. Our favorite is High Hill Ranch! Our favorite is their Cinnamon Sugar Apple Donut. They're fresh, crispy on the outside, and cakey with apple bits on the inside. Such a treat! The kids also love their apple cider best! Full disclosure: I give 5 stars based on nostalgia alone. If I were being impartial, (which I'm not), it would probably be 4 stars, due to the INSANE crowds. But dammit, there is an apple-shaped place in my heart for High Hill Ranch, so 5 stars it gets. Deal with it. Like so many other reviewers, I have been coming to High Hill Ranch since I was pretty much just a lump of baby. Once of my favorite things about this place is that SO much of it remains the same... and it does my heart good every time I go back. Some personal highlights: - The fishing pond! Oooh, the fishing pond. Where men (and women, I'm sure) who have never fished a day in their life can catch a starving trout and look like a hero in their children's eyes, without having a clue what they are doing. No snark intended: it's really nice to see the kids just FREAK out when they catch a fish, and as Dad (awkwardly) takes it off the hook. - The Old Cider Mill. SQUEE! When I was a kid, my favorite thing was to SPRINT up to the mill and claim my fee cider. And guess what? Free cider still exists, baby! The mill doesn't run anymore (I don't think) but they have big coolers of free cider sitting there. Unsupervised big coolers of free cider. (Who else puffs out their paper cup so you can get more in a turn? Huh? Admit it!!) - THE FOOD. Let's be real real: I go places specifically to eat, and Apple Hill is FANTASTIC for me. Eat a caramel apple, for god's sake. Eat two! And the apple fritters? Friggin to DIE for. And the Apple Doughnuts... oh god, I'm getting worked up. I might have to go back again. The Barn has aaaall sorts of stuff to buy, including just plain ol' apples, caramel, pie accoutrements, etc. The Pie House Restaurant is right there next to the Cider Mill, but I can't remember the last time I ate there. The lines are usually horrendous, and I typically just stuff my face with some combo of caramel and apple goodness anyway. But it's there. - Pony rides for the kiddos! That green metal corral has been there foreeeeever; I can't believe it's still there. It was closed when I just went, but I saw a sign that said $6 for the ride, and you can immortalize your little angel's death-defying experience with picture t-shirt for $20, or a picture sweatshirt for the low-low price of $30! (I'm being snarky, but $6 isn't bad, and it's cute.) - The Fudge Factory. I heart it. I posted a separate review for the Fudge Factory... it's amazing. - Tons of crafts. Most notably, I enjoy the guy who carves bears out of wood and the coin jewelry stand. It's nice to be reminded that real people make real things, and not everything comes to my door from a website. I just bought my nephew a bonafide, handmade wooden airplane. Adorable. Some cool holiday gifts, perhaps? - The Cider Shack offers free taste-testing of Apple Wine and Apple Beer. But they card, so don't even try it, Young Lady. Okay, so there are some less-than-awesome stuff involved in a visit to High Hill: parking sucks. They allow you to park in the orchard, but it's muddy and gross and apples can actually fall on your car... (silver lining: I snagged a couple free apples. Don't tell.) But the #1 crappy thing: the CROWDS. Oh mylanta, the crowds are horrible. The line in the barn to buy an apple doughnut was out to the picnic tables, and the Pie House was PACKED. I can see how that would be a bummer with hungry kids. Anyway, like I said: 5 stars because I love Apple Hill. I always have, I always will. Verdict: GO. Go go go. We always stop on our way to South Lake Tahoe, and I am never disappointed. I love donuts. And when I hear, "they are the best donuts ever", I'm definitely going to make a trip to try them out. Upon my visit to High Hill Ranch, I will admit that it does live up to the hype. I followed the sweet smell of apples donuts and found my way to the High Hill store. The donut area is tucked away in a small corner with a few table benches. They have several types of apple donuts: Plain, cinnamon sugar, glazed or crumb. Each donut was $1.20 or $13.50 for a dozen. If you are feeling fancy, you can also get sprinkles or nuts added to the donuts which does cost a bit more. The best is when they donuts are right out of the fryer - slight crisp on the outside and tiny apple bits in the donut add a nice texture. They also have beverages available and a few people were raving about it in the table next to me. If you are in the area, I would recommend to stop by and try one! read more

Perhaps the best caramel apples in Apple Hill, or anywhere for that matter. The apple donuts were mediocre, much better at other orchards. High Hill, High Hill, it's off to the orchards we go! This is always one of our go-to spots in Apple Hill because of all the photo opportunities to be had. There is a gorgeous orchard, pretty mural, the beautiful lake, cut-outs, hayrides, and they always set up a cute little area with pumpkins that make a wonderful backdrop for some fall photos or even your christmas cards if you plan ahead! There is a large store where you can buy the fresh produce and apple cider. This is always my favorite spot to grab the fresh apple cider. Unfortunately, this year I grabbed some and found out only days later that they had an E.Coli recall on that same cider. I think we will be skipping that from now on. They have a charming pie shop and a couple of dozen little booths set up for the various creative artisans to sell their wares. It's a great place to grab some unique christmas or birthday gifts for that someone who has everything! My biggest suggestion is to make this your first stop of the day OR come during the week because it is the most popular farm in apple hill so it gets extremely busy and overly crowded quickly! I don't know how this place stays open or why they allow children to run things but what a FAIL. We tried ordering the shake and doughnut thing everyone is talking about on social media. Got to the cashier after a 45 minute wait in line to be greeted by some 15 yr old little boy with a very smart mouth. After telling us we would "have to wait a longtime because they have to make a lot" we continue to order. His ghetto comes out and starts cussing at us. We walked out and left. One of the two Apple Hill orchards we visited this weekend. This place is probably a must because it is the largest of them all and the most touristy with lots of activities. That probably makes it a miss in many people's books as well. I recommend getting there early. We arrived around 10:30 on Saturday and it was PACKED. However, there is a lot to do here. Great little market with amazing apples for sale. Several varieties were available. I went with Pink Ladies. They were so good (and large). We did not have the patience to wait in line for the donuts, but did wait in line for a slice of famous apple pie. The line went more quickly than expected and the pie was worth it. And worth the exorbitant price too ($4 for a slice). One of the best apple pies hands down. This includes any and all of the pies you can get in the little town of Julian. What was great about it was that they did not try and hide the amazing flavor of the fresh apples with too many spices or too much sugar. And the crust was excellent. We also tried the fudge in the fudge shop. Many great varieties of fudge. I liked that they had small samples for a $1 each. I felt less guilty eating a small square and the place gives you free samples (as many as you like). They have free tastings of their freshly pressed apple juice (filtered and non-filtered). It is FANTASTIC! This is the best apple juice you have ever tried. Seriously. I had to buy some to take home from the market. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite as mind-blowing as the stuff that was literally hot off the presses. But darn good anyhow. They also have pony rides, hay rides and when we were there a wolf. Yes, a magnificent grey wolf. There was a wolf rescue society trying to drum up funds. The wolf was a gorgeous animal. It was worth coming here just to see him alone. I was going to give this place 3 stars because of the crowds and how touristy it was, but in writing this review I realized how much fun I actually had there and the quality of the items. High Hill can get out of control on the weekends, the crowds are insane. They have it all however, its worth the trip. The apple product shopping is the best, apple cider and juice, butter, pies, caramel covered, caramel and chocolate covered, doughnuts, jams and jellies and bins of apples. The goods are amazing, that's why I go. Around the grounds you will find vendors that have all sorts of handy crafts. A fishing pond (its a bit of a scam so watch out) some BBQ, pony rides and the list goes on. Avoid High Hill Ranch at ALL COSTS if you don't want to get Covid-19. I have been coming to High Hill during the fall for years, and recently visited on a Sunday with my family. I understand High Hill cannot regulate the crowds that are flocking to Apple Hill this time of year, but they are literally implementing ZERO Covid-19 safety precautions. The crowds are not regulated whatsoever, majority of people aren't wearing masks, and employees are not enforcing mask-wearing (even though there are signs everywhere saying you need to wear a mask). My family goes to High Hill every year to get their infamous Apple Cake, which we did as usual this year. While ordering (in an indoor facility with limited ventilation), the employee helping us actually asked my mother to remove her mask to place an order. When my mother inquired on why employees weren't implementing mask-wearing, the employee was visibly hostile toward us and shared that "High Hill is not enforcing mask wearing", which is interesting since California currently mandates that people wear masks, especially indoors. Overall, incredibly unprofessional. I hope High Hill really thinks about their actions and the way they could be negatively affecting people going forward. read more

High Hill is probably my second favorite ranch/orchard/apple stand in Apple Hill. It's very family friendly and of course has a great variety of delicious apple products. Like I said, High Hill Ranch is a great place to visit with your family. Especially if you have young children. There are cool activities like candle making, a pond to fish in, hay rides, and face painting just to name a few. I love the little pond they have. There is a cute family of ducks that I saw several people feeding. Around the pond are numerous picnic tables where you can enjoy some apple goodies from the bakery or some food from the small kitchen they have. Their apple selection is pretty good. Not as good as Boa Vista, which is just down the road. Of course they have the apple pies, turnovers, fresh donuts, ciders, beers and wines, fritters, etc. There is also a candy shop called Fudge Factory down past the pond and picnic tables. I tried a caramel apple from High Hill and one from Fudge Factory, and I liked High Hills a lot better. In fact, I'd say it was the best caramel apple in Apple Hill. I do think the $5.50 price tag was a bit too much. Parking is easy and plentiful. At least it was when I went on a weekday afternoon. This is one of the busiest apple ranches in Apple Hill, so be prepared for a large crowd. I even saw a couple tour buses dropping people off. Along with the apple stand, there is an area for local vendors to sell their crafty creations. I didn't check it out, but I think that it's a really great that High Hill supports locally made goods. I come up here every year with my family. This year I ate 3 crumb donuts, 2 glazed donuts, 2 cinnamon sugar donuts, 1 apple fritter, 1 slice pecan caramel apple pie, apple cider shake. (NO I AM NOT KIDDING I REALLY DID EAT ALL THIS) I dont really like donuts. this is the one of two places I will only eat donuts from and sadly I only get to come up here once a year. The donuts are made fresh. I felt like the cinnamon sugar was a bit dry/stale? But then crumb was a world of a difference. THey were warm and soft and delicious. Glaze was also REALLY delicious. Do yourself a favor and order yourself a dozen of all crumb. Apple fritter is huge and better than most but the star is really the crumb donut (2nd is glazed) The pies are AMAZING and all freshly/home made. You can bring home a frozen pie or order a slice to eat there! The apple cider shake is definitely one of the best shakes I've ever had. Try it with the caramel. It is SOOOO GOOD. We bought some apple cider from the (shack/hut thing?) and its really good too! We also took the hay ride around the orchard and got a nice tour. Let me start off by saying this place does NOT enforce masks or social distancing. Sure there's signs saying masks are required but I guess that's their way of saying "Hey, we're compliant!". Even their own employees don't wear any, and if they do, it's not even worn correctly. Most of the workers behind the caramel apple and chicken counters had their masks only covering their mouths. I was in line for the donuts and people behind me had no masks on and was a mere couple inches directly behind me. No personal space in any lines. Stopped by here yesterday around 3 or 4 (Sunday after T-day) and it was a welcome hustle and bustle of people. $4 for a crisp and clean cup of apple beer (doesn't have that gross beer taste). The pond was filled with trout and surrounded but happy patrons fishing and playing with their poor dead fish on strings =( There was a thing you stand in and get spun around in circles (killer ab workout) but I didn't participate. Plenty of craft booths/tents to peruse and expensive tri-tip sandwiches. It's a beautiful place to be and lots of picnic tables/seating for the people who might be apple'd out or just tired. Oh and Santa was there.. High Hill is the Mecca of Apple Hill. It's the biggest farm with the most things to do and giiiiiiant outdoor market. I love it, I really do. It does get reeeeally crowded on the weekends and can take forever to get in but if you get there early enough it's not too bad. The have the most amazing apple donuts and I would like to eat one every day until my heart gave out from all of the sugar. They also have an awesome selection of apple hill goodies and gifts. Decided to take our first trip out to Apple Hill this weekend. After reading the reviews we decided to make our first stop at High Hill Ranch. It was crowded like the reviews said, however with patients we found a park that was not too far away in the orchard fields. There were a lot of people but the lines went quick. We purchased apple donuts-the crunch, glaze, cinnamon sugar. They were all delicious. I also had a hard apple cider which was tasty as well. They have things for kids as well as adults. The pony rides, hay ride and fishing. For adults there were lots of vendor d Booths to visit. Needless to say, we spent a few hours there and did not make it to another ranch. We will return. Not as fun as I remember, and probably more fun if you have kids. We visited the day before Veteran's Day. The place was medium-crowded but the day was beautiful. We wandered around looking at stuff, which was nice for a while (the pond and view beyond it are really pretty), but found there really wasn't much for us to do, and we left after just about a half hour. Some of the vendors they have are cool (we did buy some tamales and olive oil), but mostly it is a bunch of knick-knacky crap. Oh, you don't need any dream catchers or glass mice wearing hats? Okay, move along then. We waited in line for almost 20 minutes outside their "Wine Shack". There is no menu whatsoever outside so you have to wait until you get to the counter to even see what they have. Their wine looks foul (didn't try it, to be fair) and what they advertise as "Apple Beer" is your choice of a shitty domestic beer with a shot of apple juice in it. Yes, really. $5.50 please. My husband got one just because we had already been in line for so long, and it was regretful. We headed into the Pie Shack, where we got a slice of traditional with a slice of cheese on top. The pie itself did not disappoint but the dining room was filthy and we were literally just trying not to touch anything. Over all, I was disappointed this year. Maybe it would have been more fun if I had come before Halloween to see all the harvest and pumpkin stuff. I haven't seen unmasked crowds like this since the pre-pandemic days. Didn't feel safe here. None of the other stops we made at Apple Hill were this bad. As I was standing in the grass trying to avoid the crowds, I heard a mom yelling at her teenage daughter to take off her mask. "You're outside! You don't have to wear a mask!" I couldn't hear her response but clearly, she was apprehensive about being there. Then I heard the mom say, "Well why did you come then? You could have stayed home!" We didn't stay long. If you're coming to see the pond, the grass around it is entirely wet and muddy from foot traffic. If you're coming to visit the store, be prepared to wait in an un-socially distanced line for 20+ minutes just to enter. read more

If you are looking for the closest to mainstream donuts with the greatest variety at Apple Hill--this is the place. Glazed, crumb, plain, cinnamon sugar, sprinkles, etc... they have them..and not for a bad price. Trick for this place--get there early and save a lot of time by bringing cash (there is a separate line that usually only has one or two people in it). I think it is about $15 for a dozen, and a little more for the fancy dozen. I usually leave my visit at the Hill with a box--which always goes well at work. My favorite apple cider donuts on the hill are found at a competitor's site--with Rainbow in its name... and they are a bit cheaper than the $1.25-$1.50 or so that the High Hill donuts will cost you... but since you're probably going to stop here anyways, it isn't a bad second choice. read more

They probably have the most craft sellers out of all the places in Apple Hill. No more apple cider samples since someone got sick a couple years ago :( They've increased the main parking area and typically have workers to guide/handle/direct the flow of traffic but they're not always the most helpful or attentive. This is always the first stop when I come around 9 or 10, so I'm not sure how bad it gets later in the day. Usually when the main/close parking lot gets full you have to park in the orchards. It's probably just as hard to get out of this place as it is to get in (depending which way you have to go). read more

Well there certainly is a lot going on here. We'd never been to Apple Hill...which is a shame because when the teens were younger it would have been perfect. For this visit we just wandered around a bit, took it all in, bought some apple products and left. That was enough. If you want to make a morning or afternoon of it, you'll have fun enjoying the pond and the grass and the rides, etc. Just get there early. The one big disappointment is that you can't pick your own apples there. But the lady at the farmstand shop was super nice and told us where to find the Apple Hill maps and how to read them to find the places we could pick apples. So off we went to Sun Mountain Farm. I'd recommend here for a first timer and those with kids. read more

I like this place, but I will only go if I can find a time when they are not so crowded. They are usually very, very crowded. This year I went on a Thursday early afternoon, hoping not to find crowds. There were still plenty of people! A little hard to social distance, and plenty of people were not wearing masks, so we didn't want to stay. We just bought our frozen pies for Thanksgiving (luckily they have an outdoor stand that is only for buying whole pies so you don't have to wait in the food lines inside), some donuts, and one thing at the craft fair, and then we got out of there. We got their pies last year for Thanksgiving, and we thought they were really good. Their donuts are also really good, I think better than the other Apple Hill places. There's a lot of touristy stuff here, like the pony rides and craft fair and hay ride farm tour. My son was so excited to do the pony ride when he was 3, and then again when he was 6. We did the farm tour last year and it was nice (note they aren't doing it this year due to Covid). We ate lunch here last year and were glad they had vegetarian food. All in all, it's a good place, it's just way too crowded, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. read more
