High Tea With Gerri earns one star for one reason- it's a cute place. Do not be fooled by the looks of the place, you can NOT judge a book by it's cover (I was there for a storytelling program), nothing about it is like authentic high tea. Upon presentation of the 3 tiered tray of finger sandwiches and sweets, I had high hopes which were soon dashed. The sandwiches were nothing but a variety of store bought breads (think wonder bread, Butternut, Pepperidge Farms) and whatever was put in between the lackluster bread was equally disappointing, not fresh, not delicious, just plain mediocre. The sweets were also abhorrent. Recognizing that you can't do everything well, they would be wise to contract with someone else either for their savories or their sweets (plenty of good choices for this near Gerri's High Tea). At the end of the storytelling and tea experience I was ready to pay my bill. I asked if they take credit cards and was told, "no, they don't." However, as I was leaving I passed a table of three women who were not only paying with credit cards, but, had split the bill 3 ways and were EACH paying with their own credit cards. This is a wonderful place to become better acquainted with the centuries-old British custom. The posh Victorian parlor, tables adorned with lace, delicate china, and tiered displays of sumptuous goodies, is sort of evocative of the musical number, "Be Our Guest," from Disney's Beauty and the Beast. No, the cups and saucers don't dance, but the finger sandwiches and pastries are just delightful. And although I prefer coffee, I found Gerri's tea blend downright addictive. I had been here once before, and truthfully I enjoyed it even more the second time. This is not a cafe so much as an educational experience about a genteel custom and the proper etiquette that enhances the experience. Gerri, who hails from Ireland and dresses in period attire, exudes warmth and humor as she delivers a highly polished narrative about how high tea evolved and answers questions. She demonstrates how to indulge, playfully admonishing guests who (horrors!) pick up the wrong utensil. Ok Ladies, High tea with Gerri is a nice place to go for a unique get together with the girls. You walk up to a house like restaurant. Inside is a fabulous ambiance with different china teacups, plates etc... The decor of the venue fits the motif completely. It was nice to walk around and see all the different adornments in this quaint locale. We went for a college roommate's birthday. We ordered the Four Course Traditional package. We started with a small teacup of soup. Then the tiered tray came out with 8 finger sandwiches a piece, a scone with sauces, and 3 petite desserts for each of us. The best part was listening to Gerri tell us all about her experiences at High Tea and even got some cleaning tips on making the cups etc look like new and no stains! A definite go back. We made reservations at the drake and they were lost and I went on a frenzy with 4 days notice to rebook an afternoon high tea! Gerri had an early opening and I booked it!!!All the details of her establishment is charming and delicate! Laid back relaxed and fun is the atmosphere! Yes the tea cups don't match but that's the charm of it! And every cup is interesting and beautiful!!! Gerri and her girls are wonderful and help with details! Had 2 gluten free guests and Gerri accommodated!!! My daughter had a wonderful sweet sixteen memory thanks to Gerri and her wonderful High tea!!! Sandwiches are yummy and the sweets are decadent!!! When you enter High Tea with Gerri, you are transported into a historical Irish parlor, filled with magic, ambiance and delicious goodies! My girls and I, along with their grandparents, tried on various hats and were laughing and smiling from the moment we entered. The beautiful teacups and this special blend of tea was out of this world. I couldn't stop asking for more. The scones with the preserves and lemon chutney were my absolute favorite. My girls loved their food. I had told Gerri earlier that we have a few food preferences and she made sure to make those types of sandwiches. This is definitely an experience worth having! This is an adorable little place out of a storybook. Imagine taking a step back in history to a Victorian tea room and there you have it. The decor and setting all cooperate to make a lovely experience. The owner, Gerri, is such a sweet lady. I took my mom here for her 65th birthday along with my wife and sister. My mom keeps strict Kosher and Gerri went out of her way to make all the arrangements so that my mom could sit with us and eat. My sister is vegan and Gerri specially prepared vegan food for her as well. The flexibility ensured that everyone had a great time, and Gerri was such a great sport about it. The food was delicious, the staff is courteous and the setting is perfect. This is a great place to bring a group. Gerri has frilly hats available to wear to complete the experience. High Tea with Gerri was an authentic Victorian tea experience! We went for our Mum's birthday and Christmas on 26th. Gerri was very accommodating to our schedule and when we arrived we were warmly welcomed. The 3 tiered tray was served and had a delicious assortment of scones, petit-fours, and finger sandwiches. Earl grey was served in charming non-matching porcelain. We loved the ambiance and Gerri was so gracious and warm. I came to the tea room with my 11 year-old son and 9 year-old daughter and we had the pleasure of being in the elegant and authentic tea room for High Tea. In the tea room, we were fortunate enough to have Gerri teach us the British High Tea history and manners as we dined on a four course feast: a selection of finger sandwiches; scones with lemon curd, jelly, and clotted cream; home made desserts, and pie. It was amazing to see the transformation of our day from a frenetic morning to the peace, poise and elegance of our afternoon. Went for a baby shower here and yes it was crowded but that doesn't mean the staff can be rude to the guests! The staff was extremely rude and telling people to go home. The food was good, however, they ran out. My sister came a little late for the party and had nothing to eat. Having experienced different high teas in NY and London, I was expecting to try a couple of teas and replenishment our food - but we were only served black tea and was provided a single small serving for our order. The items were not delicious, and reminded me of sandwiches I can easily whip up. Desserts could've easily been displaced by pastries from a neighborhood bakery, and they would've been better. Disappointing The venue is fine but everything else was disappointing. Only one tea choice, which was not even hot and served in tiny cups and supply was limited. Food was average at best. No signature dishes or treats. No water served or offered. Service was lacking. The protocol was strict and uncomfortable at times. Awesome Take Out High Tea! Since my dear friend is ill and can't go out I called to see if they would do a take out high tea. Gerri answered the phone and couldn't have been more accommodating! The high tea was ready when I arrived and was packed beautifully. Gerri accommodated our vegetarian and our child. Came here on a Sunday afternoon with 6 of my girlfriends. The ambience is cute, pink and girly. This was the first time we were having afternoon tea together and we were so excited. There were 7 of us, and we were seated at a table for 8. We were trying to figure out the seating arrangement and we were firmly told by the owner to leave things as they are because she had set everything properly. She said that all the place settings were to the right of each person. She then proceeded to say to my friend, "In your country, haven't you been at a table?" I found her comment to be derogatory and inappropriate. But we let it slide. She also snipped at me when I tried to give a clean fork to the person on my right, because I inadvertently used the one that was meant for her. The owner snapped at me and said to leave it alone because that is where it's supposed to be. I quipped back that the fork is used and I want to replace it with a clean one! I felt as if I was a child being scolded! I didn't sign up for this. The sandwiches and sweets were mediocre. You cannot select a tea - she said she has a special blend of Earl Gray and English Breakfast. You have to wait for her to refill the tea, unlike other places where they leave the pot with you and you can refill as you please. All this was for $53 a person (including tip). I have had afternoon tea at the Drake before for a similar price and the food and service was excellent - and I am treated like an adult. Never going back to this place again. read more

High Tea with Gerri is nice to look at, but that's about all it's got going on. We experienced so many problems while having tea here that you could almost write a farce about it. We were here checking this place out, thinking we might have a regular group outing, but there is no way I'm bringing my group here. First of all, my friend and I were meeting there, and she called HTWG because she couldn't find the place. When she asked the woman who answered the phone what their address was, the woman had no idea. My compatriot, who organized this outing for the two of us, had made arrangements ahead of time due to dietary restrictions. She called three times to confirm things (speaking to both Gerri herself and her assistant, Trudy) and was told it was no issue, that she could just have the tea and a scone and would only be charged for that. When we got to HTWG's, though, the server brought us both plates of sandwiches. My friend pointed out that she'd made arrangements ahead of time and would only be having a cream tea. The server, poor thing, had no idea what to do. She'd been left on her own. Gerri was out of the country, Trudy wasn't responding to texts, and no one had told her a thing about special arrangements. After some confusion, she took the plate away and brought my friend her scone. Now, the finger sandwiches I had were good. The scone, however? Terrible. It was airy, whereas scones are supposed to be dense and filling, and it tasted a bit like cardboard. On her website, she advertises that she serves devonshire cream with her scones, but it is absolutely not... it's (much cheaper) whipped cream. The lemon curd was bitter (and not in a good way), and the jam tasted like the stuff you get at American diners to spread on your toast. The apple pie was just like something you'd buy from a supermarket (I didn't even finish either the scone or the apple pie). Honestly, I could put together a better scone than this, and I don't have "culinary training in London". Everything just tasted so cheap. But the price was not! $35 a person! That's almost what they charge for a proper afternoon tea at the Drake! And remember how my friend had been told she would only be charged for her cream tea? You guessed it. She was charged the full $35. When my friend reminded the server again about the special arrangement, she said "I'm sorry, but Gerri herself wrote this up" (referring to the $75 check). Eventually, the server did work out something, but my poor compatriot was still stuck paying $20 for a cream tea (which is usually around $8-$10). Skip this place. It is WAY overpriced, and Gerri cuts corner. Maybe she thinks Americans won't know any better? PS: I realized after we went there that there is another Yelp section for her previous location in Riverwoods. I highly recommend you read those reviews. I wish I had. Update: My friend called to complain and was refunded the cost of the tea. However, when she (who is from England) talked about the inauthenticity of the tea, Gerri told her "You're not in England anymore". Unbelievably rude. I've had high tea multiple times at great places in the UK, Ireland, Canada (including the Empress hotel in Victoria, BC) and the USA and Gerri's high tea is as good and perhaps even better than the top famous locations. We went to this place because we love tea time and wanted to celebrate my friends birthday. We are vegetarians except one friend so we asked the waitress to exchange out most of the meat sandwiches with vegetarian sandwiches. The waitress only exchanged out the turkey ones for beef ones. We asked her to correct her mistake and she made a face and said that there wasn't any mention of this prior to us coming in. We showed her the email that was sent. The waitress looked visibly upset and left. The food was very mediocre if I was to hype it. The pasteries and cookies were frozen ones out of boxes that were put on a plate for us. The scones were so dry that I could hardly eat them. The food wasn't good. I wish it had lived up to our hopes. The ambiance was nice but the tables were too small for us and the food. I've never written a review before, but I was so disappointed in this "high tea" that I had to share. The location itself is adorable and perfect for tea. However, the fact that you do not get to choose your tea, let alone pour it for yourself, was quite surprising. I've been to many high teas and have always enjoyed making my own selection and learning about the different teas that are offered. Not here. No choice. Second, without even a "hello," four of us were seated at a small table and a three tiered stand was immediately placed in front of us. We asked for a description of the sandwiches and were told what they were. Nice explanation, but the sandwiches were extremely underwhelming and teeny-tiny. The fillings were so minimal, it was almost embarrassing. Desserts? Awful. One macaroon, one little cake, and jello (jello? seriously?). For the birthday girl, a tiny sliver of chocolate cake (?) was delivered. Don't get me started on the scones. So, for $43 plus tax and tip, - pay a few dollars more and try the Deer Path Inn. I want this to be very clear, the servers (not Gerri) were great and tried to accommodate us at every turn. If you read all of the reviews on the page, you will notice that the owner Gerri might be a little "intolerant" of individuals that were not born and raised in America (read between the lines here). My experience was not much different, and unsurprisingly I was with a Russian speaking group. We had a party of 10. On top of treating us like children, they failed to meet basic sanitary standards. Tea cups were dirty upon arrival. When Gerri was serving us, she knocked over a couple beverages, including a glass of champagne with raspberries. Instead of apologizing to my friend that was covered in champagne, Gerri fussed over the raspberries exclaiming that they would stain the tablecloth. She proceeded to put the raspberries back into the champagne glass, as if we were expected to continue like nothing happened. None of the beverages were replaced. I was sitting near the doors, and it was rather cold outside. When a second private party started arriving through the doors (their room has a separate entrance), I asked our waitress to close the doors to redirect traffic so I wouldn't be uncomfortable. She very quickly closed everything, until Gerri ran over to open up the doors again. When I explained why it was all closed, she brushed off my concerns and insisted that the other party needed both entrance options. It seemed quite rude that our private party needed to be disturbed repeatedly to benefit another group, especially when Gerri refused to close the curtain separating the two parties. As if this experience was not already miserable, the food and drink was nothing noteworthy. The sandwiches were tasteless, I'd recommend buying trays of sandwiches at Costco instead. The website boasts a "large variety of tea" which is simply untrue. She only had black tea, and it turned into yellowish water near the end of our event. The deserts were not homemade, a huge letdown for "high tea." The macaroons were likely purchased at Trader Joe's. read more

The tea room is lovely, elegant, comfortable. Food was delicious, good variety of sandwiches and desserts, plentiful hot tea. Staff friendly and attentive. We happened to be there on a day when they had a reading scheduled. Our one complaint was that we were not told when making reservations that there was an extra $30. charge for the play, and it was a rather unpleasant surprise when we received the bill. I was a little apprehensive after reading some of the reviews but I had a lovely time. Went with my husbands family. Most of us got there early and were seated right away and given complimentary mimosas while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. They were patient about some of our party being over 20 mins late. They were also very welcoming and polite. The food was good nothing extraordinary. I enjoyed the tea sandwiches as well as the scones. However, the desserts weren't my cup of tea (pun intended). My only complaints were that there was only one tea served- I'm used to getting an assortment when going to high/ afternoon tea. Also the owner said she'd explain a few of the desserts but never did. At the end when we paid and were about to leave we wanted to take a few pictures. Unfortunately they were closing soon so they started turning off the lights while we took pictures and then went into the back and closed the door. That was a little off putting. Honestly if you've been to high tea in bigger cities (LA,NY, London) don't expect much- it's Illinois after all. You're definitely paying for the experience not the food or tea. I firmly believe that if every business charged "reasonable and fair rates", people could live comfortable lives. I hate getting gouged. I hate the greed that we see with most businesses: grocers, insurance, medical offices, utilities and cable, r.e. tax authorities, oil companies, etc. This restaurant is no exception. This review is based solely on value. The dining area was nice, the staff pleasant to deal with (although a bit slow in servicing our table), but charging us $75.00 for about 1 lb of food (for 2 people) was obscene, greedy and so very wrong. I was shocked (and this is an understatement) when we received the bill. I truly couldn't believe my eyes. There is absolutely no excuse, no justification to charge this much. If you have money to burn, then fine. But I don't. I saw my weekly grocery money go out the door at that very moment. Needless to say, I will NEVER return to this establishment. read more
