Dungeness Whole Cooked Crab (comes prepackaged, frozen and overcooked). Pass! - VN
    Vince N.

I discovered High Tide Seafoods' Dungeness Whole Cooked Crab at one of our local markets called Island Grocery Depot. The individually-packed frozen crabs were selling for a competitive $10.99/lb. with average size being two pounds. I've learned a lesson from purchasing thawed Dungeness crabs from Costco that a lot of them have that ammoniated smell after cooking which is the result of the crab pretty much being expired long past its end date, and the reason why I'll buy only live or frozen crustaceans. Who knew I'd encounter another flaw? DUNGENESS CRAB: I bought two crabs. The first one I steamed while frozen for about 15 minutes. While the legs were warm, the inside of the crab where the majority of the meat is was still cold. But, all the meat was super dry, which I thought was the result of my over-steaming. So, for crab number two, I thawed it out by leaving it in the sink for a few hours, then shelled it to use in a baked dish I was making. Turns out it's the pre-cooking (at the factory?) that severely dried out the crab, not my over-steaming, as the meat was extremely parched still. Dry crab meat is not only horrible in texture, it also loses a lot of its natural flavors. OVERALL: Just a hint of ammoniated smell. The dehydrated meat was very disappointing and such a waste of money. Lesson learned.

Great crab from High Tide always!

Excellent fresh Dungeness crab at fair prices. Zero ambiance, but it all goes to the catch of the day. No frills, just as it should be

We were able to get a table outdoors after the rain ended. The staff were very friendly and prompt. We sat near the bar and people were friendly. We started with cocktails and got the coconut and mint with rum. My husband got one with tequila and ranch water. Both cocktails were very disappointing! Mine didn't have the mint muddled and it didn't have any distinguished flavor... I also didn't taste any alcohol so I had to ask what was in it. It was very plain. The same with my husband's. Both tasted like inexpensive well drinks and no character. Wouldn't recommend the cocktails. We also got sourdough garlic bread. This was good but not worth $9. I then ordered the Moonlight soup and ordered salmon in it. Please note that all soups will not come with protein so you have to order that on the side. Mine did come with some tofu so it had protein but the addition of fresh salmon was nice. The soup was tasty. It had shiitake and miso flavoring. I was toggling between a 3 and 4 rating. I felt that since it was using Asian influences, it could at least be respectful to Asian culture (chopsticks were stuck in the soup so it can be taboo with meaning death or bad luck). I didn't particularly like that and sort of felt that these were all Asian based soups with no reference to Asian culture. It felt a little odd to me. While I enjoyed it, my husband's soup was a bit lukewarm and tasted like Thai curry soup. Tasty but not hot which is a bummer. I think the kale cooled it down. I do think the soups should be more obvious that the soups do not contain protein. This should be noted at the top not at a separate bottom section where it's labeled that you can add the additional fish to any of the soups (just have it next to the soup and salad sections instead). This seems sneaky... I had mixed experience. Staff were kind but maybe I'd check some other place out.

I stopped in to talk with someone about how this works and the staff member was very helpful and patient as we had not done this before. He went over a checklist of how we wanted parts cut (chops, package weight, etc.). Three weeks later, we are stocked with all things pork! Packages are clearly marked with contents and packaged so they can go right into the freezer as is. It was a very easy and smooth process from start to end. The facility is all business--refrigerators with many choices of various smoked meats and an open butchering (?) section that can accommodate lots of staff to do what they do and a small office. We didn't buy any of the smoked meats when we picked up the pork, but my husband went back to buy some landjaeger out of curiosity. It was delicious! Not sure how to describe it--a toothy, meaty better than your usual beef /pork jerky. So, we went back another day and spent way too much on smoked salmon, teriyaki pepperoni sticks and many, many more packages of landjaeger. I really enjoyed the white salmon because it was less salmon-y/fishy (I'm not a huge salmon fan); husband preferred the red King. The teriyaki pepperoni are way too easy to eat and are not overly sweet. It's more like essence of teriyaki which I very much enjoy. I can't wait to try more of their products!

But then we were sat in the enclosed party area with two other tables, and not that it was the restaurant's fault but there were screaming children and the enclosed area just echoed everything. We thought to ask to move, and we should have. So note that if you get sat there. Our server was a sweet girl, took our order after grabbing us drinks and checked in to make sure we had everything. The main issue I had was the taste of the food since some dishes were a bit pricey. Three in our party ordered the fish and chips, that they all said was really bland and nothing special but the fries were crisp and good. My husband and I ordered the grilled Tiger Shrimp entree and the Salmon Fettuccine Alfredo. The shrimp were rubbery and tasted like that had been under the warm lamp for a bit. And I wish they would have side substitutions since the grilled veg was a squash zucchini mix with rice but it all had no flavor. The Salmon Alfredo was kinda the same. Bland and dry fish, but at least a good portion. But the sauce was broken and stringy, needing seasoning as well. My husband and I's ticket with sodas and one cup of pretty good clam chowder came to around $90 before tip. Needless to say we were disappointed with our first seafood experience since traveling from Arizona.
