Higher Grounds is a perfect place for breakfast or lunch. My boyfriend and I came here for an early lunch before we hit the slopes at Windham and had a great meal. I ordered the Mountain Berry smoothie and the Spinach Salad and my boyfriend ordered the Tropical Fruit smoothie and Turkey Reuben. We both had only great things to say about the smoothies - they use real fruit and were filling. My salad was great - the bacon crumbles were perfectly crispy and the homemade vinaigrette was awesome (I asked for it on the side and was glad I did because they give you a huge portion). My boyfriends sandwich was massive and definitely worth more than what we paid for it. Neither of us are vegan, but I also noticed that there were a lot of vegan options for people, which was nice to know they were accommodating. The atmosphere at the coffee house was cozy and warm - perfect for a skiing town. I'm only ranking four stars instead of five for two reasons: 1) My boyfriend and I split a cappuccino and it was average, which was a little disappointing for someplace that calls itself a coffee house. 2) They used all paper/plastic products (knives, plates, etc) which is easy in terms of clean up, but I felt it didn't match with the higher end cute, coffee cafe Higher Grounds was depicting. Even our coffee was served in a paper to-go cup even though we staying in to eat. Not a major disappointment, just felt a little out of place. Took a day trip to Windham and stopped in for lunch. The place was not very crowded and I was assisted immediately. I really wanted an omelette but was told they don't serve breakfast after 1pm. Ok, disappointed but nothing major. So I ordered a roast beef sandwich and hot chocolate. I then heard a guy order 3 hot chocolates and I saw the woman who was going to make them take a distinctly negative attitude about it, saying with disgust that she now had to make 4 hot chocolates. I received my sandwich and it was quite good. Plenty of beef and cheese, with a nice amount of lettuce and tomato. I had already eaten half the sandwich when I received my hot chocolate. It ranked right at the top of the worst hot chocolates I had ever had. First, it wasn't very hot. Second, there was a painfully small amount of chocolate in it. I decided not to say anything, just finish my sandwich and leave. Well, the woman who made the drink must have realized how bad it was because a few minutes later she came to my table and asked if the drink was ok. I said it was fine, again just wanting to finish and leave. She said she didn't think she did a good job making it and offered to make another. I told her not to worry, I didn't need another. I give her credit for making the offer. However, if she knew this drink wasn't a good effort, why serve it to a customer? I would return for the food. Lower Quality Coffee. Do not even try their coffee. It is like coffee flavored water. As a coffee place, it's one-star place. As a deli, it might be 3 stars, but they named their business as coffee place, so I have to rate them as a coffee place. I do not understand why the made their name contain "coffee" because they look like a corner deli. They serve something else such as sandwich, cookies, and ice cream, and their weak point is coffee. Could these people take longer to make an espresso drink? Absolutely not. I have waited 20 minutes for a cappuccino, which is just absurd. And no, there were no other customers waiting in front of me. They're just that slow. As a bonus, the coffee is subpar! Baked goods are pretty awesome, hence the two stars. You do have to remind them to give you the treats you paid for after you finish waiting for your coffee, though. I say, go to Daly's. read more

Inside the cafe looks very nice, neat and welcoming. I ordered a Harvest Green fruit smoothie and it states 100% crushed fruit but upon drinking it, it didn't taste like it at all. Now that I've been here a few times, I find Higher Grounds inconsistent. Once upon a time I got this turkey sandwich and it was great. The cranberry sauce was with some warm stuffing. I loved it - gave me a warm feeling inside. I came back again and didn't realize they switched the cranberry sauce for some cranberry mayo. BLEH! When I went to get a coffee to go, I mentioned to the person behind the counter that I thought that came with cranberry sauce at one point. they confirmed and said I could request that if I wanted it. So now, I finally got back here, ordered it with the cranberry sauce.. And now it's all cold. It may have been the summer before so it may have been inherently warmer...but I didn't get that warm feeling. Probably didn't help that it was 20 outside. If I were to make the same sandwich, I would (1.)toast the bread, (2.) make cranberry sauce the choice addition over mayo, (3.) have the stuffing and cranberry sauce warmed up (NOT via microwave though), and (#4.) melt the cheese onto the bread. My beaux then got some cchip cookies for the road and a majority of the cookie was under baked for my tastes. I'm not a cookie-dough-eating kinda girl. As matter of fact, the last time I ate a cookie that raw, we were more #3 (#1+#2 aka the runs) for the following 24-36 hours. I bagged the center to cook further in my oven at home. Also, they don't have Jane's ice cream anymore. Boo. They have another brand Perry's... Well, they have the view and atmosphere working for them. Me and my fiancé love this place! We come here every time we are in Windham. We have been here many times with friends and they loved Higher Grounds as well. Coffee is fantastic. Additionally, the bagels are great! I'm from NYC so my expectations are pretty high when it comes to bagels and Higher Grounds exceeds expectations. I usually get a bacon egg and cheese on an everything bagel. It's better than my local bagel deli at home. The scones are to die for. They are a must try! The atmosphere is really really nice too. We have taken a house up here for a month and was awaiting their reopening with much anticipation. Was gutted to discover that their coffee is terrible. We have discovered great coffee in Woodstock, Hudson and Catskill, so was so disappointed that the place on our doorstep was awful. Cookies and sandwiches were solid. Credit limit was $10, so we were going to leave because we didn't think our total was going to hit it, she said it was close enough. I got an iced coffee with mocha, it was pretty good. My boyfriend got the tropical fusion smoothie i think it was called, it was really good, but 3 minutes went buy and all the ingredients were like separating. That was $4.25. The owner seemed bitchy and wasn't really all friendly to customers who had questions, neither was the staff. And if you find mold in the tub of sliced tomatoes? Just purchased a vacation home here in windham. I've heard great things about higher grounds so I decided to give them a try. First time was amazing I brought a friend and we had a half chocolate and half regular waffle made by a nice young girl. The second time I came with a different friend I was told by this man in a ponytail that this was unavailable because it would " spill over ". Upon ordering I noticed he was snarling at me which made me very uncomfortable. Anyhow we order our food and he begins to scream my name 3 times but very aggressively and annoyed. When I came up to grab the food he jerked the plate towards me. When eating my omelet it was beyond milky almost inedible. I came in today for the third time and asked who was on the stove cooking, I was informed a young girl Bria was on the stove. While finally deciding to order this man began to stare at me with an evil usb face to the point my friend was uncomfortable. On our way back to sit with the rest of my family who had been there we noticed this man was the cook. I honestly would not and did not order from Higher Grounds if this man is the cook just for safety reasons.. I don't want to be drugged, possessed or my food spit in. I love cafes, but this place has lazy people who work there. I ordered a hummus wrap with no cheese. Twice they asked me what type of cheese I wanted, I said "NO CHEESE" twice, I get home and there is cheese on my sandwich. It may not sound like a big deal, but I'm allergic to dairy and I didn't feel like having a migraine for two days after eating the cheesy death. I don't think I'll go there again. Been going to the "new" higher grounds since it opened. Completely unorganized. Poor service. You can wait 10-20 just to pay for a self serve coffee. Way too much help for the shabby service. Baked goods are good! Sandwich/salad board has a good variety. This is a nice little coffee stop. Geared more towards the yuppie ski crowd than the locals but the staff is friendly, the food is good and the coffee is just fine. Menu is a little limited but they have nice breakfast and lunch items, baked goods etc. The bacon egg and cheese on a hardroll is very good. If you want a good choice of bagels you should come early especially on the busy ski weekends. They also serve ice cream. read more

Come here everytime we are visiting friends of ours in Windham. Lovely place, cozy decor, cute gifts, my kind of perfect food and great staff. Did I mention the food and coffee??? Yum. I am a coffee snob and I look forward to a fresh cup everytime I step foot into the cafe. Strong, yet not bitter and good variety of flavors. HIGHLY recommend the egg sandwiches on roll and if you are there for lunch, try the curry chicken salad on any of their signature salads.
