I am new converted Vegan and so I was super happy to discover this place only blocks from my residence. I love the atmosphere...very chill and relaxing almost like a coffee shop rather than a restaurant. I ordered my food over the phone and walked with my dog to pickup food. I was grateful that they had seating outside which I end up sitting and eating my food once I picked it up. I was hopping for a better, more interactive and friendly experience from the staff but the staff seemed a little distracted or pre-occupied...they just rang up the bill and handed me my food. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the Ahimsa burger with french fries and it was absolutely perfect. I will definitely be back to try other Vegan options on the menu :-) read more

Great service! It's hard to find a place where people actually care. I had the hippy kale bowl. I love the sauce put in it, it was extra juicy. Anything avocado and kale and I'm all over it! They've remodeled and changed the decor and it is a cute place to eat with its cute mismatching colorful chairs, exposed brick, chalkboard menu, and colorful mural. Three items I would come back for: Juices/smoothies. Can't go wrong with that. The Date smoothie is what you should go for if you're craving a little sweetness in your life. Samosa: free when you check in with Yelp. Yummy spices and very satisfying bites. Served with a chutney that was uneventful. The Avocado Jalapeño Burger $9.95: house made veggie patty. I ask for it with lettuce leaves instead of their carb-o-licious ciabatta bread. Delicious for a veggie patty. Every other dish has tempeh, tofu, mock meats or some kind of soy product that I try to avoid - these items are no longer appetizing to me (I was a vegetarian at one point in my life, but not no mo'). Ordered for the first time from this restaurant today. The burger I ordered was good! However, the driver who delivered my food said he noticed something off about the juice preparation. He showed me a photo of unclean juice prep counters, which I understand can get messy and is not always a big deal. The thing he noticed that bothered me most was that the woman prepping my juice dropped the plastic tool to press the juice on the floor and put it back without washing it. 4 stars- giving them the benefit of the doubt that this was an unusual occurrence, but please wash everything that touches the floor and then hands or food, especially during the pandemic. UPDATE: The owner contacted me, listened, and took my health concerns very seriously. Confirmed that the item that was dropped was not immediately being used for food prep. This place is a gem for Vegans in Downtown Long Beach. You can't go wrong with any options really: wraps, bowls, sandwiches, burgers etc. Today however I stumbled upon a new special : Tofu Bahn Mi sandwich and it was fantastic. The tofu was perfectly seasoned and cooked, the bread was light and fluffy with a slight toast, fresh and tasty vegetables and the sauce was perfect. This is the BEST vegan bahn mi I've ever had. Seriously. I asked what I can do to make this a permanent option and they said write a yelp review and so this concludes it. Please ask for the Tofu Bahn Mi sandwich, it needs to stay. read more

Samosa: Got this for free thanks to the Yelp check-in offer! The samosa was huge, a big larger than a baseball. I don't eat samosas often, so I don't really have much of a range of experience, but this was the best samosa I have eaten. The outside was crunchy and flaky, while the inside was filled with soft and savory potato. It was served with grape(?) jelly on the side. I initially thought it was weird, but then I tried it and really enjoyed the sweet jelly complementing the savory samosa. Fiesta bowl: I thought this was okay, but I would not order it again in order to try other menu items. The variety of ingredients was great, but I feel like it just wasn't flavorful enough for me, and I got tired of eating it after a while. The bowl is pretty big, so two people could probably split one. Ginger mint lemonade: I tried a bit of this, and I really enjoyed it. I typically avoid ginger, but it was not overwhelming. The combination meshed well and made for a refreshing, unique drink. I'm not sure if I would be able to drink the whole glass though. Atmosphere: The decor is amazing! There is a whole wall covered with a mural. The vibe is earthy and natural. Service: This was average. We came just before a lunch rush and watched others wait in line for a while before someone took their order. It seemed like the place seemed slightly understaffed at the time. I don't understand why they are soooooo slow,! The four times that I have been there, they were not busy, but each time I waited 15-20 minutes for my 2go order. First time I went, I waited 25 minutes for a ashima burger, second and third time i ordered th avocado jalapeno burger and both times I was given the wrong burger. 4th and last time, my order sat on the counter while the two employees behind the counter were chit chatting. Had the Date shake. Can honestly say it was the best shake I've ever had in my entire life. I was driving and had a craving for a date shake so I looked it up on Yelp and found this spot. From what I remember the ingredients are dates, bananas, almond butter, and cinnamon. Seriously amazing. Also decided to have lunch since I was there and got the Thai bowl with "chicken". I am impressed. I usually hate vegan cuisine, but Ahimsa's food was actually pretty good. The samosa is one of the better ones I've had, and the curry lentil soup is a nice, hearty lunch. It's hard to find vegan cuisine satisfying because I always feel like something is missing, but the bowls were nicely put-together, especially the Mediterranean bowl. It had a sour cream sauce that felt like a nice substitute for feta. The Teriyaki bowl was also really filling, and the mock chicken had a nice texture. Just don't make the mistake of expecting it to taste like meat. Vegan is never my first choice, but Ahimsa isn't my last choice either. I would definitely come back if I wanted a lighter lunch and/or I had a vegetarian/vegan friend. read more

They are growing on me, this wonderful local downtown Long Beach Vegan restaurant. I'll have to give Ahimsa a solid..."B" for my overall love and I've changed my 3 to 4 star. I love the décor... love the Indian music playing... the artsy tables... I love the vegan choices, I love how it's near work and I love that there's another vegetarian / vegan eatery here in Long Beach... who great is that I do like it here a lot and I need to come back to try the other good looking dishes on their menu to get a better idea what the kitchen can crank out. My first time at this place since it opened it's doors was for lunch. I'm loving the menu because it's a good looking one and it's a pretty nice size. Let's start by saying...WOW... I would come back here again and again for the Vietnamese Spring Egg Rolls alone. They get a solid "B" for there size and enjoy ability. These are NOT what I was thinking when I ordered. What I got was a Claim Jumper size portion of goodness to enjoy (see my photo). Each one was about the size of a tamale. I had the "soup of the day" which was Vegetable Tofu today. Sadly the soup was bland tasting, not real flavorful... it gets a "C-" (BUT... they have other soups to try...so there's hope here). They did apologize and said they well check into that for next time...so that was nice and it seems like that care. I also had the Mediterranean Wrap; (see my photo) it looked good... tasted good... the hummus looked homemade and was good too. The second time here I had the vegan Sushi roll with tofu as the star. This was good because the tofu was very tasty and marinated (I think) or cooked in something good tasting to me. It got a "Mmmm" out of me. Other folks in the room had some real good looking food on their plates when I was there, so I want to keep coming back! You must go check this joint out... I enjoy the food and other offerings they have here but, geez, this is twice now where I have put an order for a smoothie in advance (via Grubhub) and I arrive only to find it hasn't even been made yet. Sometimes I have to wait around for someone to realize it wasn't made, or I have to wait until they're done helping other customers in order for them to start on my order. I've been placing my order about 5-10 minutes ahead of when I'm about to pick it up. Some of the staff also feel unfriendly and unapproachable; some look constantly bothered that they work there. I guess I just won't be ordering my smoothies ahead of time anymore if it won't even be ready when I show up. Bummer because it was my time saver / it kills my pace when I'm out walking for exercise. read more

Ahimsa is a great cafe to take your vegetarian/vegan friends to! It is also a great spot if you are seeking a healthy, reasonably priced meal. I ordered the Thai Temple bowl with tofu which I thoroughly enjoyed. I do wish there would've been more tofu on it though because it was really good. The bowl was satisfying but didn't have an incredible amount of flavor. I asked for more peanut sauce which truly made the bowl! So.... today my experience was very interesting. I realized that I've never eaten food before. I strolled into the place where food is made wearing my favorite pair of kitten heels, my lace up black corset and my low rise diesel jeans. Every single person was wearing a kaftan I've never felt more out of place in the world. White people with dreadlocks. My heart was racing. I felt alive for the first time in so long. I felt so profoundly defeated when I took the first sip of my ginger lemonade to me it felt like I was transported to a Moroccan tea room. Don't forget this all takes place during the summer. My food took 9 months to be prepared. I was so nervous to get it :) but when it arrived I fell to my bony knees. My stockings had split. I writhed around a bit in ecstasy! One last thing... Cherry pie $2.95- It was undercooked. The crust wasn't golden or flaky at ALL. I wished they used fresh cherries instead. I wouldn't recommend getting the pies. Tempeh Reuben sandwich $8.95- The saukerquat didn't have too much of a vinegar flavor. The tempeh could have been better incorporated with the sauce. I don't care for daiya cheese. I could only eat so much of it. The bread was soft but I would suggest to toast it to give the sandwich more texture. Spring rolls- $4.95- I got this for my friend, and they gave me 2 huge rolls! Green chips and salsa- Free- Chips were soggy. Salsa was watered done and lacked heat. It reminds me of Rubio's salsa. For 'Checking in,' customers can get either guacamole and chips or samosas- They ran out of both, and I substituted for hummus and chips. I was slightly disappointed. I did arrive about 25 mins before closing so I guess it makes sense that they would run out of food items. Service- It was pretty slow given I was the only person that ordered a hot food item that needed to be prepared. My roll was created right after my rueben was done. It would have been more efficient to assemble the roll after the order. Overall experience: I would suggest the eggplant sandwich and the smoothies. I might try it again if I'm ever in the area. Service was shit. Walked in and there were so many workers yet no one welcomed me or acknowledged me. I was waiting for 10 min before i got spoken to. Got nachos, 1/10 the cheese is not good and the overall flavor was so bland. I also got cheese 1/10 sticks and they used yellow cheese, it was lacking so much flavor and they were very soggy. They come with a tomato wanna be "ketchup" and it taste like a tomato purée, it's so sour and inedible. I got a breakfast sandwich and that was a 8/10, it came with a side so i chose a tomato soup and it tasted just like the "ketchup" sour a like pure tomato, no seasonings or hint of sweetness. Both made me go "mmm." However, I must echo the sentiment that the service was much too slow for the amount of cooking required. The nachos were the biggest disappointment. How can this dish be considered nachos? It was just a bunch of veggies thrown onto chips.
