Decided to try this place based on reviews. Got the braised beef noodle, pan fried dumplings, beef onion pie, and a salad. The beef noodle broth was rather flavorless and noodles were a bit stale and chewy. Had to cut them with scissors. Maybe the spicy version of this dish is better. My wife tried the beef onion pie and didn't like the texture and said I can have the rest. She also said the dumplings were the least worst, but had a flavor that doesn't agree with her. She said the salad dressing seems to be just sesame oil and is very bland. Could maybe jazz it up with some rice vinegar or citrus. Sorry I don't like leaving a bad review but our experience was not good, we both had the same reaction. read more

We walked in looking for our new favorite Chinese restaurant. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was very cute and looked exactly like you expect. It reminded me of restaurants I'd seen on tv.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was good. Our server delivered us our food quickly and offered my son a drink refill in a timely manner. The food was the issue though. We order cashew chicken, orange chicken, and sesame chicken. Each food came with fried rice. The cashews were added too soon during cooking and came out tasting boiled. The orange chicken was just wrong. There were some strange spices in there and no orange taste. My son who loves different orange chickens wouldn't touch it. The sesame chicken was a winner though. I ate some and then gave the rest to my son. I ate my fried rice but no one else did. Not even my fried rice loving mom. It tasted like the water which had a distinct less than desirable taste. I'm not necessarily saying this is a bad restaurant but that it just wasn't to my family's taste. read more

Solid neighborhood fare. So they have the best authentic selection, not necessarily, but my must-haves are always done correctly and consistent. I had a taste for egg drop soup and this one is done well and I love their sizzling rice soup. I don't like my Mongolian beef saucy, this one is done well and they get the spice level correct. I like their eggplant, sometimes though, they have too much grease. They are one of the few restaurants nearby that will have the option of snow peas. Snow peas are a nostalgic item for me, so I ordered chicken with snow peas occasionally. Their chicken and green are well done as well. For the Chinese regional cuisine that this restaurant represents, the food is good. Overall my taste do lean toward more harder to find Chinese dishes, but this place is solid and a staple for the neighborhood. read more

Since trying this place for the very first time, I never went to someone else. They have it all and I'm a frequent visitor. Sometimes I come back to back days. After moving back home to North Highlands, after being gone for 35 years, one tends not to know where to go for things or even recognize where you grew up. But one thing was consistent when I asked about where is good to eat close by; Highland Chinese Restaurant was always mentioned. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The location was small and quaint.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But the food, was big in flavor and the portions, HUGE! The Lady who took my order, was very friendly and super sweet. I felt like even though this was my first time, I was treated like a long time family friend. She even checked on me while I sat and asked if she could get me something to drink while I waited. In today's day an age, of almost being ignored in most restaurants, this was huge for me and made me smile. Now I am going to show you some pictures, and just know that it is hard to see exactly how large the portion was. But I am not complaining one bit. Most of the time when we eat out, we look at the portion and say; "Really? Is that it?" But this place, well, let's just say that I said "Holy Cr*p!" with each container I opened. :) While North Highlands, isn't really a destination most think of traveling to in order to specifically dine, I would say that if you find yourself at Elkhorn and Walerga then Highland Chinese is a must. Had just had a terrible experience at another restaurant but was still craving Chinese food . We found this restaurant and it was a totally different and amazing experience from the prior. The woman of the restaurant was so vibrant and so nice , it seemed like a one woman show because she was doing it all lol taking orders , bringing food out , complimenting my children , being patient, helping incoming and outgoing customers, I mean she was "moving" and she did it all with a smile . We ordered the BBQ chow mein, lemon chicken and egg rolls. The food came out promptly and hot. As a mom of a very picky autistic son, my son actually loved all of the items as well as my daughter and I . Very fresh and delicious food with great portion sizes and prices . We decided to pop by for dinner around 5:45 and it was fairly on the slower side but I did hear they had a lot of to go orders. The owner and only waitress was very friendly and helpful in choosing what to eat from the vast menu. We ended up settling on the po po plate for an appetizer which consisted of a little bit of everything, Mongolian beef with pork chow mein and shrimp with scrambled egg on rice. Overall food was a solid 8/10, really good but a little on the greasy side.. a side note here the portions are big so come hungry. The interior decor was exactly what you would expect, I really loved the centerpiece - you don't see that super often. Overall we liked everything and the prices were completely fair. Stopped by another Chinese restaurant that had a line of patrons waiting, so I set out to find a place that I could get in and out of relatively fast. The lady at the order desk answered my menu questions and I ordered the pepper salted pork chop, Peking spareribs, kung pao beef and wor won ton. If you've had salt and pepper spare ribs or dry fried ribs, the pepper salted pork chop is essentially the same thing...delish! The Peking spareribs were not spare ribs, but rather chopped pork chop and a non-Peking sauce that heavily tasted of honey and was quite oily. I grew up eating kung pao chicken or shrimp and was not familiar with kung pao beef so I gave it a try...good choice! Crunchy celery, an abundance of bell pepper onions and sliced beef. The wor won ton didn't deliver at all. Good amount of al dente veggies and pork filled won ton, but the broth was (scale of 1-10), a 2 on the flavor scale in terms of the broth. Big bummer on the soup, as that was the primary dish I wanted. Overall I would definitely return for the kung pao beef and the pepper salted pork chop. read more
