New Shanghai has become our go to spot for family dinners. We are regulars and often bring a large group, and they always take great care of us. The General Chicken and Mandarin dishes are absolutely amazing. After eating here for years, it's honestly hard to enjoy Chinese food anywhere else. The service is what truly sets this place apart. Thomas is incredibly personable, great with our kids, and makes you feel like you're walking into a family member's home for dinner. Adrian is equally warm, welcoming, and always friendly. Both go out of their way to make every visit enjoyable. Great food, great service, and great people. We highly recommend New Shanghai and will continue coming back for our family gatherings. New Shanghai is supperrr popular considering they are one of the only halal Chinese spots in sac so if you want to go make a reservation beforehand!! I went during Ramadan and the service was great and they tried to get out food to us promptly - since we were the first ones to order - my friend who came later had waited about 30 minutes for her order to be taken and a mother thirty for the food to arrive. So be prepared to wait!!! The service is great otherwise (but they definitely need more staff) and location is well decorated but small for the amount of traffic they get. The food is pretty good though some dishes are definitely better than others (like orange chicken over the chow mein - DONT do mongolian meat it's so bad and tasteless both times). read more

Was really excited to see that this place was under new ownership and now all Halal! My family has been coming to New Shanghai for over 20years and quality had gone downhill in recent years. A change was much needed. Came in late around 8:20pm after training at the gym across the street and saw a sign at the front "no dine-in today". No problem, there was a big party of what we assumed was family sitting in the dining area. At first impression, the place was really clean! And decorated nicely. We ordered, with recommendations from the helpful waiter, and hung out for about 15 mins while they prepared our food. We ordered the Mongolian beef chow mein after learning they no longer had the bbq chicken option. Also ordered the General Chicken. We only live about 12 mins away so food was still super hot when we got home. The chow mein was delicious, very flavorful and the beef was thin and tender. The general chicken was amazing, not too spicy but just right! A heads up- it was deep fried and very breaded so you didn't actually get much chicken. The breading was sweet almost favored funnel cake but oh sooo tasty! And they threw in a huge side of this crispy chili that was more smokey than spicy - it was incredible. Overall, really happy with our food, wished they'd give a more generous portion of meat but next time we will order a protein entree that isn't fried. I was told when I called at 8:10 to either order via door dash or come in and order since they weren't taking phone orders anymore. I managed to get out of bed and drive all the way over here only for them to be shut up and closed, which is different from what Apple Maps and DoorDash says. Ordered door dash for lunch. Not sure what they are doing with their general tso chicken, but it's literally almost all breading. Where's the chicken?! I was wondering why it tasted so sweet and the texture was off. I split the "chicken" up on several pieces and it's pretty much 99% breading that's fluffy almost like a donut inside. Pretty good price and good food. We ordered House Chow mien that we had ordered to go before so we knew it was good. Shrimp fried rice, was good according to hubby who is a picky lol Wonton soup (forgot to take pic), was average Mongolian Beef was blah and disappointed. I had no idea how to describe it. Sadly. Service was good. The place is nice and clean. Water served in a Kirkland water bottle. My husband suggested I pick up the family meal for our first time trying. It was $50 and I was shocked to see how much food you get for the price INCLUDING the soup which is RARE! I've eaten Chinese food all over the west coast everywhere from a liquor store to places in or around Malibu and this was by far the absolute best Chinese food I have ever had. The potstickers were double to triple the size of other places in regards to both overall size and the amount of meat inside. The sauce was outstanding too. New Shanghai is hands down the best Chinese food in the Sacramento area and the fact that it's halal makes it even better. Let's just CLEAR some false information in the reviews as we made sure to ask all the questions prior to ordering - YES they're certified HALAL (NO PORK is offered on the new menu) We were fortunate enough to try this place for the first time during Ramadan 2025 - the sweet employee saw us sitting waiting for our To-go order and knew we would be breaking our fast there and not at home so he politely offered both my husband and I water and a Date! Wow , just wow.. I've only ever had an experience like this in the home of a Muslim family. This was quite frankly the best first impression and we hadn't even had the food yet lol 2. Food was delicious ! Hot right out the wok and tasted a lot like the Bay Area Chinese were use to having only here w/ Halal beef and chicken!! (No Veggie only for us) 3. The bad reviews clearly indicate there was a lack of expectation and I know as a former waitress everyone's got different opinions/ taste buds ect but this place really goes above and beyond to ensure you leave happy and satisfied. 4. The small touches of having a designated prayer area for Salat and complimentary tea is a big Win for me. Do not trust the star review, they are now under new management as of just a few months ago! This is now an Islamic Chinese restaurant meaning they no longer serve alcohol and all of the meat is certified halal. I had a very nice time here with my wife, daughter and my in-laws. Although I don't always observe halal, I am happy to see it because it typically denotes that the restaurant has to obtain higher quality meat and I find that it is prepared in a more clean manner. The food here was not greasy, well Seasoned came out promptly, and tasted fresh and delicious. Everything is absolutely DELICIOUS. If I can confess... we were here three times this week. First of all, it's not overly expensive. Prices are very fair. The egg drop soup tastes homemade, like a grandmother made it with love and care. I am very picky when it comes to dumplings, and the chicken won ton dumpling soup tastes very high quality. Another huge plus is the service is so friendly and always checks on you. Even though I am a Christian and don't have to eat Halal only, I love that it's Halal! I absolutely love this restaurant. Their soups are delicious (wonton soup and hot and sour are my top two favorites), the chow mein noodles have a great chewy texture, their BBQ chicken fried rice is fantastic, and I like their Generals Chicken (ask for it to be a little spicier, you won't regret it). You know it's good flavors when you don't have to add soy sauce to the food. The service is great - I have had nothing but great service from the servers, even when they're dealing with unruly diners. I'm usually a bit weary to try new Chinese places but there's always cars parked here so I decided to give it a shot. I ordered the Egg Flower soup which had was full of flavor, eggs and small chopped veggies, including baby corn. Less than $10 bucks and could feed at least 4 people. I ate two bowls and still had plenty for take home. The chicken wontans, i ordered extra crispy and they came out very fast, perfectly crisp and piping hot. I wasn't sure what to try and was in between the General Chicken and Walnut Shrimp so I ordered them both and Egg Fried rice w garlic. The General Chicken had a lot of red peppers but wasn't super spicy. The Walnut Shrimp was probably the best I've ever had!!! Perfect amount of crisp and sauce. Which one of the servers (Kristen i think her name was) mentioned they make all their suaces from scratch and can serve them for other meat options. (The don't offer pork btw, but that was totally fine for me) I highly recommend the Walnut Shrimp!! The rice was the only item that was just "meh", would've been nice w more egg and a little more flavor but wasn't bad. I also ordered sweet amd sour chicken to go (even though I don't believe it was on the menu) and it came out piping hot and FRESH. The only things I'd point out if I had to point cons would be: It was freezing cold outside and not much warmer inside. I forgot my jacket and was freezing the whole time. It would've been nice to have Fresh Hot tea at the table, but they offer it complimentary in "serve yourself" coffee cannister style as much as you want. It would've also been nice to have the chili variety at the table and low sodium soy sauce, but the server was very kind to bring out chili oil, Sriracha and hot mustard packets... Mason was a new server helping me but he was very attentive and Kristen was also very helpful. I over heard her telling another table how much she loved working here and how great the owners are to them. That's always refreshing to hear. At the end of the meal they offer complimentary ice cream with cinnamon wontans crisps. This is a Family Style dining place so if you're like me and eat alone you're going to end up with lots of left overs. Thankfully I have a family of 4 at home and there's still plenty for them to share even after I stuffed my face. When I asked Kristen if they offer smaller portions she mentioned that although they don't, you can get lunch in buffet style options (i think from 11-1) in case you want less, or so you don't end up with so much leftovers when wanting to try variety. You can literally get 4 people worth of food through their specials (with many decent options) for just $50 bucks! Service was decent as well.
