First time to try hotpot express. Didn't know what to expect. I came with 2 of my daughters and granddaughter. She like the shrimp and the Bok Choy. We got the 3 different broth. I wasn't too impressed with it. We had the spicy and beef broth and and regular. We got the beef, bok choy, cabbage,fish ball, vermicelli, noodle,dumplings. It was okay nothing special. While driving around the Sacramento area in the evening looking for a late-night dinner spot, I happened upon Hotpot Express. Hotpot Express provides an innovative take on the traditional hotpot experience in which diners can select their broths (up to 3 different broths can be chosen) and then select their hot pot contents from a self-serve refrigerator. Diners are charged by the plate with each colored plate representing a different price point. They provide a medium-sized selection of noodles, vegetables, meats, fish cakes, and dumplings for patrons to enjoy. The owner was very friendly in explaining the restaurant's concept and providing us with recommendations, which we appreciated given it was our first time at this spot. We went with the miso and authentic boat noodle broth. Both broths were very flavorful and I'm definitely glad we were able to sample both! From the fridge we went with a selection of noodles (egg and udon noodles), napa cabbage, seafood mushrooms, fish balls, and tofu. The hot pot ingredients tasted fresh and of high-quality. My boyfriend and I have been wanting to come here for a while and we're so glad we finally did. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. In fact, we were the only ones in the restaurant since we came around 8:30pm. The broth was incredibly delicious and totally recommend coming here! The ambiance was nice and clean and a nice dinner spot for anyone looking for something warm to eat. I definitely need someone to be with me because I brought most of it home. The portion was very generous. Their beef broth was decent and flavorful but I was looking for more spice (cilantro, basil, lime, chile) and umami. I also would have loved to see glass noodles. The vegetable section was decent, but wanted to see more choy and different cabbages, pea shoots, snow peas, etc. I like the idea of controlling the price with the different priced plates. My selection came to a little over $40. Just thinking of what a bowl of pho runs and other hotpot houses, this runs a little more than I'd like to pay, especially for a single eater. Took my best friend & mom here to experience the "hot pot" life... & they LOVED it! You get to choose your own sides/noodles, so each of us were able to eat what we wanted & cook it how we liked it. It was their first time so they were amazed at how easy it was. We chose 2 different broths. The beef & the lemon grass. Both of them were delicious! My favorite part is that it's self serve. You don't have to wait on anybody because everything's already set out in the fridge for you to grab. The employee there was also very friendly. He checked on us a couple of times and cleared our plates once we were finished. There wasn't a lot of people there, just one other group so it was nice & calming. Even as more people came in it didn't get too rowdy. For all 3 of us it did cost around $90, plus tip. So we spent $100. Not bad for the amount of food we ate. By the end we were satisfied & full. Came here to give it a try after seeing all these good reviews but unfortunately I set myself up for disappointment. They had quite a few options for soup broths, the selection of meat was very limited and sad. Why do they only have one kind of beef which is the sliced round cut and sliced pork belly. No other options, the rest was just meat balls, Korean fish cakes and 6 options of veggies. There were shrimps with the head on, mussels and squid, but not much else to choose from. Now the boat pho broth was delicious and flavorful. The other part I did not like was it seems shady they took our small color plates away as we were eating, so I am not sure how they are tracking but there was no way for us to verify how many different color plates we had at the end, so it seems they can just ring you up for whatever the total amount is and you can't even verify if it's accurate or not. I didn't like that. Overall, the option of dishes was very limited. And some items were too pricey for a few pieces... for example 6 cut up pieces of tofu it's expensive here compared to you can get a whole tray at the grocery store for much less. And 4 shrimps for almost $8 was too pricey. Small restaurant, serves alcohol and accepts credit cards. If you come here with low expectations then you should be good. Unfortunately, I have had much better hotpot experiences elsewhere with much much more different meat, veggies, and seafood options... for the price we paid, it definitely needs improvement. read more

We didn't know what to expect, but so glad we tried it! You can have up to 3 broths in your hot pot station, but an addition broth is $3 more. My boyfriend and I tried 2 broths: the house special (lemongrass) and the boat special (dark, beefy broth). Both were excellent. What I like about this place is that hot pot items to put in your broth are self serve. My favorite toppings are: beef, shrimp dumplings, quail egg, lobster balls, udon and bok choy. Add spicy sauce to your broth for an extra kick and wash your meal down with a delicious Thai tea (they have an "adult" Thai tea available as well). All was great. But it is not an all-you-can-eat restaurant. They use very fresh ingredients for the hotpot. All the dishes in the fridge are uncooked. The price is go by the color of the plates. The cost of each plate is not expensive. But watch up. It adds up quickly! You pick the soup base and choice the uncooked dishes by yourself. Cook the food on your table, and it is delicious. I ended up overeating and, of course, paid a lot of money too! Lol! Hotpot Express is next to a casino. A lot of parking spaces are marked for casino customers only.
