I love coming to China Gourmet. It's located in North Highlands in the Ross shopping center not in the best area. Whether I call or place an in person order the employees are always so friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is clean and there is plenty of seating in the dining area if you choose to dine in. I always order to go. I have ordered the beef broccoli combo plate with chow mein only. I ordered orange chicken, shrimp in lobster sauce, crab rangoons, wor wonton soup, sweet & sour pork and so much more. I have not received a single bad or unflavored meal yet. If you're looking for some good Chinese food, China Gourmet is definitely the spot. The food was really good! I got the Mongolian beef combo, and you can choose between chicken fried rice, chicken chow mein, or both. The only thing is you can't remove the chicken from them, but honestly the chicken pieces are really small so you barely even notice them. We also got the salt and pepper shrimp with fried rice and chow mein, and it was really good too. Everything tasted fresh and the portions were solid. For all of that we paid about $31 total. Overall really good food for the price. I'd definitely come back if I'm craving Chinese food. read more

Food is bad. Beef brocolli does not taste like beef broccoli. Too bland. Salt and pepper pork chop has no taste, no flavor and very greasy. So greasy that I took 1 bite and put back on the plate. It was impeccable! They gave attention to detail and were helpful in making suggestions on new items to try. Highly recommend. I've lived in the area for over five years and shortly after moving over here, this place was recommended to me and they have not disappointed they have changed ownership. There are a few glitches are things that I would like to see like eggplant or snow peas, more of the vegetable option, like bok choy or gai-lan. Also, the last time I was there, we ordered sizzling rice soup and they didn't prepare it well enough where the rice wasn't quite sizzling and they left it on the table and they brought it out too soon before the suitcase came so the rice had cooled off, so it didn't do the whole sizzle and part of ordering sizzling rice soup is for the presentation however, with that said the rest of the entrées were on par. I am a usually a curry beef or Mongolian beef. I judge places that do too much to the Mongolian beef I don't want to see a lot of vegetables in Mongolian beef. It should be usually onions and green onions and the beef but not a lot of sauce or gravy. I ordered Chicken Chow Mein and Chicken fried rice and had it delivered so I can only speak of the food. 1st in both dishes the Chicken was not cut up like it should be. There were several large pieces instead of lots of small pieces through out. The Chicken fried rice was a little on the dry side and the Chicken Chow Mein had a funny smell to it and was very greasy. Based on good Yelp reviews, our family of 6 went to China Gourmet last Sunday evening. The food was very good .. generous portions at modest prices .. but what earned this establishment a fifth star was amazing customer service. Our orders were prepared efficiently with great quality, and the young lady who waited on us did everything she could to make our evening delightful. The restaurant was not very busy .. probably because of the time that we came in. Of course this makes it easier to provide superior service, but it does not make it easier for a great restaurant to stay in business. That's why I would encourage others in the Sacramento area to give them a try. Like us, I think you will be pleased and want to come back to try more of their delicious food. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant multiple times, because I always try to support local, family-owned spots but after my last few visits, especially the most recent one, I'm honestly done. On my most recent visit, I dined in and decided to take the rest of my food to go. I had ordered soup, and the lady brought it out in a small container. I asked if she could please use a larger one since it was supposed to be a full portion. She took it to the back and came back out with noticeably less soup than I had before. It was very obvious the portion had been reduced, which made me feel like I was being shorted on something I had already paid for. Then there was the food itself, I specifically ordered the spicy green beans and the lady even wrote "extra spicy," which was written right there on my receipt. What I got was sweet, bland, and nowhere close to spicy. I could've ordered that anywhere, but I came here expecting them to actually deliver what I asked for. On top of that, the large rice I ordered was a joke. The portion was significantly smaller compared to what any other restaurant in the same price range would consider a large. When I mentioned it to the lady, instead of fixing the issue or even pretending to care, she said, "Oh, you going to eat all?" As if that had anything to do with it. Whether I plan to eat it all or not isn't the point. I paid for a large portion, and I should receive what I paid for period. That kind of comment felt dismissive and completely unprofessional. I've overlooked small issues here in the past, but honestly, it seems like every time I come here, there's some kind of problem, wrong order, poor portions, or attitude. I don't expect five-star service from a small "mom and pop" restaurant, but I do expect basic courtesy, honesty, and consistency. At this point, it feels like they just don't care about keeping repeat customers anymore. The service feels careless and borderline rude. There is a reason I always come back to this place. The hot and sour soup is great. We've had their General chicken, Szechuan beef, Kung Pao chicken, and Mongolian beef.
