The side dishes are just as fantastic--minus the haggis, which may be great, but I'll politely skip! If you plan to go, plan ahead. I didn't know I would love a place so much that primarily serves sandwiches. My sandwich, actually a wrap, was fantastic. I had the seasonal Lochness wrap. My friend had their Reuben and pasta salad. Her sandwich was definitely enough for two people. It also had the perfect ratio of meat to Kraut. The restaurant itself is quite small, but they are very fast and efficient. A line forms out the door and into the hallway. You place your order at the counter and your food is brought to your table. If you're staying to eat, there's a good amount of tables on the inside and several outside. I was impressed with how much they packed in their space and how efficiently everything ran. Let's talk about the service. We were incredibly impressed! Our food and drinks came out rather quickly. They have waitresses that bustle about and are very helpful and attentive. As soon as my friend was done with her meal, our waitress offered to take it and box it up. As soon as I was done a few minutes later, our table was cleared, and the desserts that we ordered were brought to the table. That was such a nice little touch that you would not expect from a little place like this. The efficiency of their weight staff ensures that everything moves smoothly. We ordered a slice of chocolate cake and a scone. These were perfectly homemade and delightful. The whip cream on the side of the plate with the scone was also fresh. I visited Highlands Deli with my family after shopping at the Robinson Salvage store for some discount buys. This is an adorable deli with friendly service located in the center of downtown Carrollton. You order at the counter, and either wait for your takeout order or find a seat in the main dining room, the smaller overflow dining room across the hallway, or outside. The decor is delightfully filled with Scottish items, and their menu similarly reflects their heritage. I had a regular order of the Highland Chicken Salad, filled with chicken, walnuts, apricots, raisins, celery, and spring onions, served on a large lettuce leaf. My mom tried a half sandwich of their Mary, Queen of Scots, which was the same chicken salad on a croissant. The chicken salad was made with sweeter mayo (not really my favorite), but the added nuts and fruits made for a delicious meal. My brother had a half Cyril sandwich, filled was ham and provolone. My sister-in-law had a half sandwich of The Ayrshire Melt, with hot ham, cheddar, and dijon. As you can see from the photos, the portion sizes are HUGE! Everyone loved their lunches. Note that if you cannot find parking out front, there is a small covered parking deck behind the restaurant that connects to the back door of the building. Highly recommended! read more

Cute spot on the square in Carrollton. Huge array of sandwiches along with more traditional meat pies and sausage rolls. Service is fast and friendly. Good portions and fresh ingredients at fair prices. I had a wrap with the broccoli salad side (delish) and partner had the ploughman's lunch. We left stuffed and happy. I was in Carrollton with a quilt group visiting the SE Quilt and Textile Museum and opted for something small and local instead of taking the bus back to Atlanta for hotel food. Discovered this small Hole in the Wall Deli in the Carrollton Square. It has a Scottish theme. Surely qualifies as a Dive. Reminds me of a Scottish Pub. They have a huge menu of really unique and yummy sandwiches, salads, desserts, and soups. They have very few tables inside... very crowded. Several outside Patio tables are available as well. So nice! A line forms in the adjacent hallway. Lots of locals. Seems nearly everyone knows everyone. Line moves quickly. We got our Lunch and sat in the car... Hot day. Everything was yummy. I love melts. Therefore, I love Highland Deli. Because of a recommendation from a colleague, I ordered The Mitchell. It was a turkey melt with veggies, their special white bbq sauce, and cheesy bread. Repeat that out loud in your head: cheeeeesy breeead. Yum. The full sandwich is about ~6 inches, and the portion is pretty generous. They have a vast array of melts; they probably already have a unique name for anything that you're craving at the moment. Buffalo chicken melt? The Hot Scot. Tuna melt? The Rylee Melt. Patty melt? The Braveheart. The Highland Deli apparently has Scottish roots (or at least that's the look they're going for). Just about every square inch of the wall is covered by a scenic painting, a flag, or anything related to Highland Deli and/or Scotland. The venue itself is pretty small and loud, but there are some tables right along the storefront where you can sit for a more peaceful and scenic meal. Highland Deli is a Carrollton favorite, and I now understand why. With that said, it gets pretty packed during lunch hours; so you should probably just order to-go and then grab a table if you can. The food comes out pretty fast for such a popular place; so no need to worry about that. I'm definitely coming back here when I'm in town again. read more

My mom had the quiche special and I had the Macbeth; it's been 4 days and I'm still dreaming of this sandwich. If I lived closer I would eat here all the time. If you're looking for a good inexpensive place to eat, this is a great place. While it is better known for lunch, the breakfast here is pretty good. It can get pretty crowded around lunch as with most places on the square, but it is worth the wait. For a good lunch I highly recommend going here on Wednesday and getting the shrimp special. They're food alone is amazing 10/10 would eat for every meal for the rest of my life if that were plausible. But the service is also pretty spot on. They really want to keep their customers. One time I got a sandwich to go and they put mushrooms on it when I asked for it without. I took it back to have it remade (because picking toppings out of melted cheese is just... I didnt wanna have to do it) and they tried to offer me a free dessert but I didn't care for one and was like "nah, it's fine, just the sandwich and I'll be on my way." While I was waiting they gave me a cash refund to comp my meal when I didn't even ask so that was nice of them. I would have returned anyway but now I definitely will.
