best brewery in missoula hands down! best outdoor environment and the BEST beer in town.

The Highlander Brewing is great! We had planned a social event in their pavillion for our conference. While we had to cancel due to COVID (moved to virtual) I cant thank Riley enough for being extra accommodating in meeting our needs. Their space is great and has a beautiful outside setting, great beer and a choice of food for catering. The only bad part- we had to cancel but we will definitely be looking to them for future needs. thanks Riley. read more

Fun place. We enjoyed the atmosphere and attitude here. Oh yea....we also enjoyed the beer selections! I didn't eat while here, but a few people with me had slices of pizza and were pleased. My hubby loves thin crust pizza, so he was really happy to see it here. 2 1/2 year ago, spent two days and an overnight in Missoula. The old downtown sector teems with breweries and Highlander was great. We did a flight then some full glasses. As I recall, there was a lunch truck outside. Bikes, kids, bikes, welcome to this open space across the river from restaurant row. University students keep the scene here hopping. This summer (2020) passing by on another road trip. I really hope it works we'll stay in this brewery forward town. read more

There is no beating the location, in the heart of everything that is Green Bay Packers! We enjoyed the food: wood fired pizza and a smoked trout appetizer, both were delicious and I'd order them again. The beer selection was wide between their own brews and guest taps. I didn't care for many of their beers, aside from an empirical IPA that was above average in taste w/o overwhelming with hops. Service was friendly and solid. My concern would be during events and/or game weekends...it would no doubt be fun and busy, but being someone with young kids it most likely wouldn't be an ideal spot. The only reason for the 4/5 is that it seems like a manufactured brewery for the sake of having a brewery. It doesn't have that 'feel' of a traditional brewery, and I feel it show in their quality of beer. That said, I'd come back for the food, service, and to give some of the other beers I didn't tastes go as well. read more

I really want to like this place! The inside is awesome, and so is the outside patio by the river. I have stopped by twice wanting normal pizza other that pepperoni, or I good burger and fries. I have been disappointed both times. Why this place keep insisting on have weird, strange, funky, fancy, gourmet what everyone want to call food. Why they can't do a normal pub style burger, and fries I have no clue. The give their spent grains to a local ranch for their cows, and then they use that beef for their nachos. I would have loved to be able to have a good burger and fries with that beef and a beer by river! Maybe some day. read more

We were visiting Missoula over the past weekend and stopped in at Highlander for a beer. We had been here a few time before and had a really pleasant experience. This time was not so pleasant. The heavy set young man serving beer was very put out that we were asking questions about certain beers and had asked for a sample. This set the experience in a bad way and made the whole experience not as enjoyable. Not sure the young man's name however he needs to work on his people skills. Take the time to provide good customer service. First impressions last forever. read more

Wow. This place is awesome! Huge selection of microbrews that are brewed right here. Definitely a local favorite as the parking lot was completely full at 5:30 on a Thursday, but plenty of seating inside. Not a ton of food, but they do offer pizza by the slice (large slices and really tasty) and some other bar foods. Beer was excellent. Started off with the cocoa-cayenne "South of the Porter" and ended with the Strawberry "Wolf Point" Wheat. I guarantee that if I lived in Missoula, this would be my spot. Will be back! read more

Pretty cool place if you want to take the whole family out for pizza. Big open area out back that the kids can run and play. Nice little Creek running along the property line. Beer is OK but I wouldn't go their specifically for the beer. If you want as nice relaxing place to have dinner with the family then this fits the bill. read more

Missoula Brewing is welcoming inside, but especially out. They may have one of the best outdoor spaces in Missoula. It has something for everyone. Tables, Patio Chairs, Lawn Games, Grass and even a CREEK! They have some very inventive beers, the Strawberry Wheat or the Stout are my two favorite on the menu. I'm sure both would go very well with their Pizzas. If I could pick one thing they need to work on would be the pizza. They don't offer much except your standard pizza by the slice fare. I would come here more often if they offered vegetarian or vegan or dairy free pizzas because lets be real... everyone likes beer with their pizza. read more

Seriously, I am only in Missoula for one night, this time. I visit this town every couple years. BUT today, completely unplanned, I have hit three breweries in this one day. Not one of them disappointed me and ALL of them delivered what I was looking for. I think that's pretty amazing! This was my final stop of the day, this fine Monday evening in April. And with festive live music, the NBA playoffs on many TVs, friendly locals and tourists, and sweet personable bartenders to boot--this might have been our best stop of the day!! Go to Highlander, enjoy and be grateful you are where you are at these special moments---you won't be disappointed. (I am a 17 year Bay Area resident, but also a Northwest native (WA/OR) and generally I am a NW kinda guy at heart... also a beer appreciator, but certainly not a beer snob. City dweller but country lover. The beer here was a 10, no doubt. We didn't eat here so I can't rate the food. But for overall ambience/experience, this place floats my boat!! This place is amazing. We were doing a Missoula brewery tour and really wanted to smoke a cigar with our beer, well we found this place and it fit the bill. They have a HUGE back yard area and they allowed us to smoke at the picnic tables furthest from the building. It was beautiful outside and it was so relaxing having some great beers and a cigar. Even way out in the field, the service was excellent and they checked on us often. We also ordered several pizzas and the food was dynamite. We left so stuffed I could barely move. We came and sat down at the bar and we were ignored by a female bartender with a ton of tattoos. When we were finally waited on, she actually threw the coasters at us. Kind of a random (but cool) find close to our hotel, as the shitty hotel would not drive us outside of their 3-mile comfort zone and take us to Tamarack Brewery, which several locals raved about and we were looking forward to trying. I started out pretty disappointed, as I wanted a larger meal option after getting into town and not eating all day. Steak, burger, etc. The menu here is chalked on a board over head, and sub par when it comes to variety, you can have a pizza slice, nachos, chilli, a salad or that's it. Multiple beers on tap which made up for the chintzy menu. Ordered a pizza slice and a small salad and a pint of beer. All food turned out pretty average. The beer was definitely the highlight. Delicious. However, we found it odd that they have out beer coupons and limited each person to only 3 drinks. The service was friendly and prompt, but not very personal. But I can forgive that, as it seems to be what they're shooting for: a take it or leave it, simple experience. I absolutely think that this place can do without the family friendly aspect, the children's play area in a bar seems absolutely weird and out of place. Screaming babies here and there if you can tolerate it. But whatever. It's their bar. This place gets five stars because it was easy, comfortable and the beer was great, AND because it has potential to be very amazing. It's got a great location on a rambling creek and a beautiful outdoor patio and lawn area strung up with twinkle lights. I can only imagine that if they stayed open into the later hours at night and mixed a live band in there how much fun this place really could be. read more

Fantastic! Great beer and stellar pizza. Loved the ambience and live music Saturday after 6pm. They have board games and a play area for little ones. Sampler was awesome, especially liked the strawberry ale. Just wished they offered a bit more from the kitchen, like a soup of the day. Would love to give this place 5 stars...the beer was good (had one of the IPA's), the kid friendly is a little odd for a brewery but they had their own area and the ambience was nice. My complaint was the music selection. I felt like I was in a Vegas casino instead of a brewery. We did ask about it and they use Pandora when live music isn't playing. It was not relaxing or conducive for a nice relaxing afternoon. I will give it another try. read more

I want to start by saying this experience was my second time here. I understand it is Covid and I am happy that Highlander is taking precautions and being very safe. The beer and the service is great. Unfortunately, we called ahead to check if a table of 8 could be sat as per the new ordinance on January 16th. My family (a family unit, not friends) came in after we were approved by a hostess. We were brought to our table and they were bringing extra chairs for us. Suddenly, a chef in pink from behind the counter raised their voice saying the "boss lady" wasn't honoring this and started yelling at us saying the seating ordinance was still 6 despite the new mandate. Don't get me wrong, I understand and respect this business, but the way we are treated by the chef was unbelievably rude and embarrassing. It could have been handled so differently and my entire family works in the service industry. Being yelled at is never cool, and to be promised over the phone we had a table and then left stranded by the staff while we were yelled at was... brutal. read more

We were very excited to come to this brewery and we were highly disappointed. We ordered chips and salsa and they were very stale and we politely had them sent back and did not want another order of them and the chef was very hostile about the fact we did not want to eat stale chips. There is only 4? tables by the play area so if it's a busy night you might be out of luck.
