We recently spent two nights at The Villages (hotel) across the street while visiting Lassen National Park. The property is beautiful and the restaurant quite stunning. We sincerely enjoyed two dinners here with good service- the waitstaff could be more friendly. The breakfast on the last day was where things fell short. A simple request to change out a second carb on their omelette offering (change out potatoes for grilled tomatoes or spinach) - a request that is typically fulfilled in any basic diner - was turned down, with the reason given there was only one cook in the back. it was surprising how unaccomkodating the waitstaff was given the price point of this restaurant. I left feeling underserved and like I overpaid but given the remotenesss of the area and the timing of our plans, there was little choice in the moment to take our business elsewhere. To be fair, the omelette that I had and the breakfast my son had (egg and sausage) were tasty- I left simply feeling underserved as a patron when the waitstaff could have responded to my request in a more positive and accommodating manner. I have received better service in a no frills diner than I did that morning (Monday 6/26/2023). read more

This visit to Highlands was very disappointing. The views were beautiful as usual, but unfortunately our server missed the mark. We came for appetizers and drinks, but were informed the lunch menu was only being served. So we ordered lunch and drinks. I then asked our server for the password to their wi fi since our service was not working due to a tower being destroyed in the Hog Fire, she said unless we were guests staying there we could not have access. I let her know our service was down due to the fire, she reluctantly gave it to us. After we finished lunch, another party was seated, they too asked for access to their wi fi and the same server provided the password. We have stayed at the resort and stopped by many times, after this experience, next time may just need to pass. read more

We took a last minute trip to the Highlands Ranch Resort for a weekend getaway. The resort grounds and cottages were beautiful, felt clean and well-maintained and the location was a 10 minute drive from the entrance to the park. One thing to note - they have wifi in the main restaurant/check in area but the rooms do not have any wifi or cell service so prepare to be off the grid. In non-COVID-19 times I would have given this resort 5 stars but for this review I'm giving it a 4 due to their approach to COVID-19. Similar to other reviewers, we were disappointed by the on-site staffers COVID-19 PPE protocols in the main restaurant/check in area. The woman who checked us in, while very friendly and accommodating, had a mask but was wearing it below her chin throughout our check-in and site tour and we did not see her wearing a mask at any point during out stay. We also noticed that none of the facilities staff were wearing masks. The restaurant was only offering outdoor dining which was fine but the staff themselves were a mix of wearing masks, wearing masks only covering their mouths, and a few not wearing masks at all. We ultimately ended up ordering takeout from the restaurant and eating on our porch to avoid further contact with that setting. The food was delicious and the layout of the room was perfect to order in/ enjoy the views outside. read more

The Artisan's View is the restaurant at the Highlands Ranch Resort, a farm-to-table style place. The room is large and beautiful, with a bar, fireplace, lots of tables and booths. They have outdoor seating as well, and lots of it, though we sat inside. This is a very new place, and there were few customers for such a large restaurant. The servers were attentive, and the entrees arrived at the same time prepared properly, though one could sense that they are still working through new-restaurant issues. Hopefully other diners will discover the place, it was recommended to me by the staff at Drakesbad inside the park. I recommend you try them out if you visit the area. The menu contains food you would expect in a lodge setting, and our meal included calimari which was tender and featured 2 dipping sauces, neither of them cocktail sauce. It was well received, as was the Ribeye steak with mashed potatoes, and the broiled chicken breast with a corn salsa. I had the chicken, and it was cooked perfectly, which goes along with the trend we saw of executing dishes very, very well. Oh yeah, we really liked the brown bread served with butter before the meal, the brown bread was chock full of nuts which we dig, and there was a white bread without nuts for people that don't partake. If I could change one thing it would be to lessen the sweetness of some of the dishes - honey was an ingredient in many of the preparations, and I found myself reaching for the salt to balance out that sweetness. Again, if you're in the area this place is worth a try, who knows what good things they will come up with as they hit their stride! read more

I've heard about this restaurant from friends and thought we'd give it a try for date night. The restaurant is very nice. Pretty wooden, rustic lodge. We started with cocktails. I enjoyed my lemon ginger martini. We then ordered an appetizer and our salads and entrees. I was disappointed when our appetizer arrived at the same time as our salads. I would have much rather enjoyed my appetizer before getting my salad. The Poke Pops appetizer was good and unique. My Caesar Salad was good. For my Entree I had the Beef Wellington meat was a very good cut. Quite tender and delicious. The Puff Pastry around my Wellington was not so puffy, it was undercooked and dough-ey. My husband ordered the Cowboy Ribeye. He said the cut was good and it was cooked to his liking, however was served luke warm. We've had a handful of really nice visits here, all since Covid restrictions were put in place. Meals are a bit pricy for what you get, but the setting is unique and wonderful. The restaurant is making the best of using outside dining and the heaters work great. Our recommendation is to order steak, as those meals were clearly the specialties of the house. Had two solid meals here during a recent trip to Lassen National Park. The service was very friendly and efficient both times! The house made granola, French toast, and coffee at breakfast were all superb: I would definitely come back for breakfast. We stated dinner with bread and lavender butter: the butter was really special - I almost wanted to pack up the extra! For dinner, we had the pear salad (really tasty with the blue cheese and bright dressing), the mac and cheese (very rich and creamy), and a pasta dish (decent flavor, but way too heavy on the garlic). The ice cream sundae desert was huge but a bit disappointing: the ice cream and hot fudge felt very generic after the artisanal food we had before. It would be great if they offered make your own Smores kits for the nice fire pit out back! The restaurant is super close to the parks south entrance, so it would be a good option for anyone travelling through the area. read more

Enjoyed dinner on the patio last night! Staff was friendly, knowledgable and attentive. Had the ono special which was great,moist and served with a Hawaiian barbecue sauce with quite a zing! Filet was cooked medium rare and very tender- no steak knife needed although I was served one. I was a bit chilly (temp dropped to 60!) and they do have a few heaters on the patio, but I was not near them-- my issue for not bringing a heavier wrap to the mountains! Inside, they had removed at least half the tables and I would be comfortable eating in there. Staff appropriately wore masks and things were distanced. 6 months ago we stopped at the Highlands Ranch Restaurant for breakfast. We sat on the deck for 20 t0 25 minutes and no service. We left and noticed other couples leaving for same reason. Yesterday, July 26, 2019 we again drove from Quincy to have a nice lunch. Sat on the deck again.In a short time we were served water and our order was taken. 45 minutes to 1 hour our food finally came, sort of luke warm. One of us ordered a chicken sandwich and salad. The "salad" consisted of a couple leafs of lettuce, dressing on the side and nothing else. The other couple was reasonably okay with their food. I ordered seared ahi from the Chef's Special area of menu! I received 3 very small pieces of ahi and a "postage stamp size" portion of vegetable coleslaw for $17. The quality of the food does not justify the price The cabins are nice, but I will not return for a meal. read more

We had lunch for 2, seated right away on patio over looking the meadow. Watched a bald eagle as we looked over the menu. Our table was cleared from privious patrons but obviously not wiped down. And you guessed it, my arm went into all sorts if sticky mess right off the bat. On my way to wash off i asked our blond waitress with the foreign accent if we could please have our table wiped down. The blond gave me a look as if i was nit picking and rolled her eyes. I returned to the half ass wipe down and tried not to let the messy table ruin my experience. The lunch menu looks to have a little of something for eveyone (people without food restrictions). If your vegan or gluten free you might be enjoying the house salad. Food was on the table in about 20 minutes and i slid my plate over the large sticky spot on the table. Out of sight, out if mind haha. They were not busy that afternoon. We ordered the hawaiian mahi mahi sadwich with fries $16. We recieved a tasty large piece of fish between a nice sweet bun with great garnishes. Very refreshing, warm, and sweet. My girlfriend said she thought the carrots were a nice touch. I thought the fries were not prepared correctly, they seemed deflated and possibly over cooked or not fresh out of the cooker. They went to the dogs. I also ordered a large cesar salad $12 and calamari $12. The salad was strait forward classic cesar pre tossed in dressing. The salad was room temperature. It would have been nice chilled somewhat because it was a warm afternoon. Maybe a cold plate would have helped. Could have used more crutons and the dressing was nothing special. The calamari was quite good. Large portion well seasoned. Came with a side of roasted garlic aioli which was ok and cipotle honey which did nothing for me. There was very little smokey flavor in the honey so i would have rather had that spread over some buttered toast for breakfast rather than to dip my breaded squid in. BUT, i now knew what all the sticky mess was from, still hidding under my plate. In summary, this is a beautiful place to eat or have a drink. The food is quite good and you wont break the bank. Excellent views and inside atmosphere. Servers could use some training, just my expeience. read more

But every single time we go here the service to get simple drink takes forever and they simply forget about you! We have a couple times been seated, waited... and then just go to the bar and bring our drinks back. They need to get it together! read more
