Ambiance: it's a corner spot coffee place located in Glendale, mostly likely you'll have to find street parking, limited seats inside and they don't have a restroom here Service: friendly staff, patient with questions, and provided useful suggestions Drink: variety choices of coffee options, classic and store specialities ORANGE VANILLA LATTE - **** creamy top and unique flavors, a bit blend coffee, overall still recommend Price: decent quality, slightly overpriced, it costs $7+ per drink

A coffee shop I've walked past since it first opened; I finally stopped in. I tried their latte with house made orange vanilla syrup, and it delivered both comfort and the caffeine kick I needed. Smooth, well-crafted, and genuinely delicious. Service was fast and the coffee shop was quiet and enjoyable.

For where thou art, there is the world itself, with every several pleasure in the world including a good coffee. Without further ado, let us begin this new review. Highlight Coffee (est 2015) is a tiny corner coffee shop nestled in central Glendale. Owned and operated by Mr. Frank Kim. He has another shop in Pasadena. This coffee shop location is at an historic hotel building across the Civic center on Broadway. Cafe's indoor atmosphere was quite relaxing with a few seats and long wooden bar tables; good background music. They sell some pastries and donuts as well as coffee bags and merch. Menu items were modest and has the basic and specialty drinks. I arrived on a hot midafternoon and was genuinely greeted with warmth by a male barista with cool tattoos. I ordered a Cold Brew (16oz) x milk. It was very smooth, aromatic and refreshing. And barista gave a Spinach Cheese Croissant ostensibly as giveaway since they're closing soon. I acquiesce on his kindness. Staff was nice and competent. Prices were quite affordable and highly competitive. Quality was awesome. Street metered parking only. Overall, I enjoyed my cold coffee drink and service. I highly recommend this nice coffee shop.

I wanted a decent cup of espresso, but this was likely the worst coffee I've ever had, with a strong, moldy, and highly acidic taste. Maybe the grind was too coarse or the water too cold, I can't be sure. I've had bad coffee before, but this one tops the list. The overall place wasn't bad, decent service, but the coffee was way too disgusting. I had to throw it away

You have to try the butterscotch latte--seriously, it's a standout. Chill vibes, no-frills service (they won't serenade you, but they will caffeinate you), and coffee that's dangerously good. Lots of easy side-street parking too, which is a win. Great little spot to relax or get some work done

This place is a hidden gem in Glendale. Love the ambience the Orange vanilla latte is perhaps the best vanilla latte I've ever had. And they always have a lot of different pastries in the morning but they sell fast, so get here early if you like pastries with coffee! Very quick service too, so I don't have to wait a long time. Love it. A Must try coffee shop here in Glendale.

Stopped by Highlight Coffee for a large drip coffee, only $4.75, and worth every penny. The coffee is gourmet, smooth, and clearly made with care, far better than Starbucks or any other spot around. The ambiance is great, the service is friendly, and the prices are solid. If you're looking for a quality cup of coffee in town, this is the place to go.

Iced orange vanilla latte from Highlight is a delight! I mainly tasted the subtle zest from the orange flavor and the espresso was on the lighter side. It's right on the corner of Broadway and Glendale. and the lighting inside is lovely. Barista was chill and quick with it. They're also known for their butterscotch latte!

I wanted to try this place out since it's near my girlfriend's area but I ended up with mixed feelings. The drinks weren't great even with added sugar; it was bitter and just wasn't hitting for me. Their pastries are fantastic though, I loved their miso and ham & cheese croissants; they were crispy, fluffy, and sweet. I'm not sure if I came on a day where the barista handling the register was in a bad mood but he gave me attitude on simple questions I had and it threw me off. Ambiance was just ok as it's small inside with barely any seating.

The pastries here are TO DIE FOR! I ordered the white miso kouign amann and loved how flakey it and sweet it was. I also ordered the ham and cheese croissant and found it to be super light and savory! The butterscotch latte is also fantastic and not overly sweet. I can't wait to visit again soon!

Ask the Community - Highlight Coffee

Are any of the latte flavors vegan?

Yes! The orange vanilla and mocha are both vegan.

    Do they have affogato?

yes yes! made with Straus Organic Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

    Is there AC?

    Best AC in Los Angeles.

Which coffee roaster's beans do they currently have for sale? Thanks!

Hi Kaylee! At the moment (March 2019) we are carrying Sweet Bloom from Denver, Augie's from Redlands, Case out of Ashland OR, and Demitasse here in Los Angeles. We have worked with many other roasters in the past and will probably bring in others…

Since Highlight doesn't have a restroom, where do you go that's close by (within minutes) and do they let you go pretty easily?

Hi, we always let people know where the closest one is. Usually there are several just about 20-30 seconds up the block or across the street at public buildings. Unfortunately I can't be certain about how easily it is to use as their businesses…

How is the parking situation here?

Parking is easy- grab a metered spot on Glendale Blvd or on Broadway. I tend to go before 10am so I can also park at dollar store /chipotle parking lot accessed off of Glendale blvd.

So many people define themselves as experts. Sadly, many of those same people will walk in and say things like, "Gosh, I'm tired, could you make me a double espresso?", clearly assuming that stronger taste automatically means more caffeine. My wife and I simply like a good coffee in the morning. Which leads to the obvious question: what do we define as "good coffee"? For us, it helps us get into the day, tastes pleasant, and does not leave a bitter note. We are absolutely not coffee experts and can discuss coffee, at best, at what we Germans would call "Thekenniveau" -- bar-counter level. I do understand, however, that it may make a difference whether beans were roasted weeks or even months ago somewhere remote, then shipped and stored, or whether they were roasted locally and recently. So we asked ChatGPT, and one of the recommendations was REGENT Coffee in our neighborhood. We went. Our directive was very clear: we explained that we knew little to nothing about coffee, which was precisely why we had come in and were looking for advice. The lady helping us started with: "Well, it all comes down to the settings of your coffee machine when you pour your espresso." I responded that we are not really espresso drinkers -- we drink Americano. She gave us "the look" and explained that an Americano is espresso with more water. The information: fair enough. The way it was communicated: not ideal if your goal is to win me as a customer. From there, the conversation did not really lead anywhere. We were asked questions such as whether we preferred nutty or fruity coffee. That may be a perfectly reasonable question for someone who already knows what those terms mean in practical taste terms. But we had just told her that we did not. That was the entire reason we were there. We were not looking to prove our coffee knowledge. We were looking for someone who had the expertise to guide us. In the end, we bought an Americano. It was served so hot that my wife burned her mouth in the car, and it took almost the entire 45-minute drive to Santa Monica before it had reached what we considered a comfortable drinking temperature. It cost $5. And we did not even particularly like it. Would I go again? No. Would I recommend REGENT based on this experience? No. What makes this particularly disappointing is that this was a tremendous lost opportunity to turn us into long-term customers. We like expert advice. We drive to Farmers Markets to buy fresh produce knowing full well that we may pay 200% more for something that is perhaps only 15% better. But we can taste the difference, and that makes it worthwhile to us. Coffee could have been exactly the same. If I specialized in coffee, I would make it incredibly easy for people like us to enter that world. I would offer tastings. I would explain, in simple language, what "nutty", "fruity", "chocolatey", "bright", "smooth" or "low acidity" actually mean in the cup. I might offer a short class on how to set up a home coffee machine properly. Maybe even machine-specific sessions. Maybe in the shop. Maybe at the customer's home. Because there are customers walking through the door saying, quite literally: "We know very little. We want advice. We are willing to spend money." And even better from a business perspective: Not just money once. Continuous money. Imagine if the conversation had instead started with: "I totally understand where you are coming from. Coffee can become unnecessarily complicated very quickly. Since you mostly drink Americano and want something smooth rather than bitter, let me give you two small tastes so you can understand the difference. Then I'll recommend one bean to start with." We would almost certainly have bought a bag. Possibly two. And if we had liked them, we might have bought beans there for years. Instead, they sold us one tiny cup for $5 over the counter, while the payment screen suggested an 18-25% tip. And two potentially very loyal customers walked out frustrated. That, to me, is the real business lesson here. It is not about whether REGENT makes good or bad coffee. Taste is subjective. It is about recognizing the customer who is standing right in front of you. Especially when that customer is effectively saying: "Please teach me how to spend more money with you." And then making sure you do not send them home without doing exactly that. Small caffeine footnote: espresso is more concentrated in caffeine per ounce, but a normal serving of drip coffee usually contains more total caffeine than a single espresso because the serving is much larger. Stronger taste does not automatically mean more caffeine.
