Then along comes my gorgeous and very health conscious daughter, Brianna. Nana keeps Hikari on speed dial, routinely orders from our friendly neighborhood sushi purveyor twice per week. Ten days ago she challenged me, her rib eye and pork chop loving Daddy, to sample one of her spicy tuna rolls. As with any good Daddy, I am rendered utterly helpless -like Superman foiled by Krypronite- by any request my talented, beautiful daughter makes. I nervously grabbed a roll, torpedoed it into the inky, umami-redolent black sauce, and found myself shocked, even stupefied, at how distinctly "un-fishy" this delicacy was! My mouth revered the crunchy exterior of its fried tempura coated rice base, my taste buds frolicked at the myriad textures commingling with cooling, creamy avocado and even the snappy, slivered jalapeño chip...which Hikari has thoughtfully stripped of its fiery seeds. Hikari is also famous for rapid-fire service- I submitted my order for spicy tuna rolls and cup of miso soup (richly satisfying!) seven minutes before my arrival and was pleasantly pleased to see find my takeout order ready upon my arrival. Mixed feelings about Hikira Sushi. I feel it's just a nothing special restaurant. Formerly Mary's Japanese restaurant long ago, this places opened in January 2026. Had good reviews so we decided to try it out. It serves sushi and Japanese food. I typically rate a Japanese restaurant on 2 basic entrees, miso soup and tempura. If they get these basic Japanese dishes right, typically everything else is pretty good. The pros: Clean with big tables that give a family of 4 enough elbow room. Tempura and chicken katsu were fried just right. They got the tempura right. The chicken katsu my wife had was juicy and not dried out. The cons: Miso soup was decent. Like a 7 out of 10. It lack flavor like not enough miso. It wasn't salty which is good, but I also did not taste the dashi (bonito flake) base that provides depth to the soup base. Needed more tofu as well. The sushi was nothing special. The size of the raw fish was nothing special. It wasn't anything that stood out. The California Roll was also basic. Nothing special, not even sesame seeds. The rice seemed skimpy as well. Price wise, to me it seemed over price for the sushi for what you received. Nothing worth mentioning or exciting about this place. I also tried the Matcha Beer. If you like hoppy beers and IPAs, you might like it. I on the other hand prefer Sapporo or Asahi. Conclusion: Unfortunately, I had high hopes for this place and it just didn't deliver in my opinion. read more

Friends invited us here for lunch a few days ago. They had been looking for a Japanese restaurant since moving to Diamond Bar area. We were warmly welcomed as we entered the restaurant. Interior was contemporary and clean. Great lunch specials offered . All 5 of us ordered the same meal! My husband loves the yellowtail nigiri it's fresh and delicious very good cut and he loves side ponzu sauce! We came here on a Thursday for lunch. This place took over the spot that Kamis Sushi used to be at in the plaza with Sprouts, Ace Hardware, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and Chipotle. The layout of the restaurant was familiar from the previous restaurant but the decor was definitely cleaned up and brightened from the previous place. Service was quick and attentive. We both ordered lunch specials, his was a katsu bento w/ sashimi and mine was 9-piece nigiri with a roll. Fish tasted fresh and were solid, thick cuts of a large variety, overall, I thought it was a good price for a lunch special. I ordered the Garlic Chip Tuna Roll, Seared Cajun Salmon Roll & 20pc Sashimi for two people - had SOO much leftovers. The rolls are HUGE and taste wonderful. I love the flavor of the Cajun and how fresh the Tuna roll was. The Garlic Chip piece was the perfect crunch to the roll. Between the two of us, we couldn't even finish a roll, so we had plenty of leftovers. I highly recommend getting the Sashimi 20pc if you love sashimi- it's so worth it. The cuts are HUGE and there was 8 different types (if you include the krab salad). Our server was so sweet and accommodating. The ambiance was very chill and warm. Ordered a PREMIUM chirashi for take out, so can't say much about the service. Ambiance is standard for Japanese restaurant - nothing extraordinary. Chirashi bowl itself was solid. They gave a nice mix of fish, the uni was actually of decent quality. Toro etc - definitely what you'd expect from a premium chirashi bowl. My only problem (and the biggest problem) is that they gave a horse radish pack? Like why? New establishment - had every potential to be great but decide to cheap out on wasabi? This was actually Spicy, garlic, and not sweet. The Edamame was made well. I had to stop myself from eating to save for the rolls. We usually get Sashimi or Nigeri but this place was very pricy for those (2 pieces for $18-$25) so we stuck with rolls. Cajun Salmon and Cajun Tuna were smokey seared fish, not really Spicy. Lemon Yellowtail was refreshing and tart. I limit my rice intake so I ordered the Energy roll and this was very good. The sauce added a little sweetness to the rolls. Fish were fresh. New spot opened last week, took over former Kami sushi location. Renovated the space - open airy vibes, got rid of the tvs and dark decor, definite upgrade. Menu covers everything from sashimi to cooked food so something for everyone. Ordered the chirashi... got a better-than-average cut of tuna, a piece of salmon belly which is a pleasant surprise, overall everything was fresh... but weirdly also got a stick of imitation crab? Like.. strange thing to get in a chirashi bowl and I felt like that cheapened the whole bowl but it's fine maybe some people are into it? lol. Oo almost forgot I also got a shrimp nigiri. Shrimp was normal but the fact that it came in nigiri form inside my chirashi was a little weird but maybe an aesthetic choice bc it looked cute for the photo? lol. Came here for lunch on a Sunday and got the lunch combo B, the black snapper nigiri, and the yellowtail belly nigiri. There weren't many people during this time so they weren't very busy and it was pretty quiet in there. The food took longer than expected to come out. Not sure why because there were 2 sushi chefs.
