If you haven't noticed, there are Several locations with this Same Name, but in other areas around San Diego City and County. Makes sure you've chosen the Correct location when reviewing. I have been coming to Hilberto's for OVER 40 yrs. There was a separation in the family, but the Santee location has the Original recipes and their Carne Asada Burritos are HUGE! The other locations are owned by a different person, former family. So be careful. I ordered the carne asada fries and they were awful. First the portion size for 13 bucks was tiny. One very thin layer of fries smothered in guacamole sour cream and cheese, it was more sour cream and guacamole than anything and the carne was not asada or anything near it. The meat was cheap steak cubed into pieces and very very bland. The salsa was the best part of my meal and even saying that is a stretch. Nothing good about this place. The cashier said "it's gonna ask you a question" when I paid and of course it's asking if I want to tip. No I don't want to tip just put the fries in the bag bro. First time trying this taco shop today, and I've got to say it's really good and their workers are friendly. :) Ordered a Carne Asada burrito and the meat was so tender and juicy ! I couldn't believe my tastebuds lol. Also added chips and guacamole to my order and the chips were fresh and crunchy. They have a little self serve salsa bar too. Their red salsa and salsa Fresca taste good as well. Just wish it was a little spicier. Other than that, the food is yummy and their customer service is great! I stopped in at Hilbertos Mexican Food Place for the first time. I was amazed at the large selection of Tortas, Tacos, Mexican Dishes and more. I chose the Beef Taco and Beef Burrito plate for only $11.95. The food was absolutely delicious. It came with rice and refried beans as well. The grilled chicken inside was was good, but the burrito could of used more of it. The chicken was well seasoned and tender. The guacamole was creamy and tasted good but could of benefited from a little seasoning. I liked the salsa fresca or picadillo. It had a fresh zesty flavor. A little more chicken and better seasoned guacamole and this burrito would of been great. I tried both the green and red hot sauces from the small salsa bar. Both were actually very good. This is my go to spot for breakfast burritos in the morning out here in Santee. The red sauce is delicious, and they don't charge extra if you ask for more. They also have excellent chicken tacos. In my opinion, their sister location in Rancho San Diego has slightly better chicken tacos, but they say it's the same recipe. Added bonus, it's right next to a 7-11 so you can go inside order your food, swing into 7-11 for a Gatorade or whatever your beverage of choice is, by the time your done getting your drink, your food is ready. Placed my order for a carne asada burrito($4.89) cashier didn't even look me in the eyes, I interpreted her conversation with the cooks . She said $4.89 took money , then went back to talking to the cooks. They have a salsa bar 3 types I got the hot and green salsa both were good and hot. After I got my salsa sat down , she yelled out carne asada burrito less then 2 minutes after I ordered it. This has been our local breakfast spot for ages. We always come by and order food and snag a big gulp from the 7-11 next door. They never seem to mind which is good because I'm all about consumer choice. The breakfast burritos are fairly large, and they come in a few varieties. I used to get the Potato Bacon Egg and Cheese, but I found the potatoes were too soggy and not cooked enough for my tastes. Tried the Hashbrown burrito (same as the above except add ham and instead of potatoe chunks it has a couple hashbrown patties) and I have been a fan of that ever since. My wife really likes the salsas from the salsa bar, and you can often see them in the back preparing it with the Vitamix and fresh ingredients. We've never had an issue with them subbing out an ingredient, provided it was the same type.. i.e., my wife would sometimes ask for the hashbrown instead of the potatoes in the PBE, and no one ever gave her any attitude about it, so I'm not sure about the other reviews. They would earn a five star review from me, since the service is always nice, and the food is always served quickly, and it's hot and filling, however, they just recently increased the prices... a hefty amount. They are no longer one of our cheap delicious options, which has us going there less and less often, I'm sad to say. Forgot to say, I agree with the other review, this place is very clean and tidy, which isn't always the case with these kinds of establishments! read more

I grabbed some grub here for a recent meeting in the area and I'm happy to say, drumroll please, this is a taco shop... anti-climatic, I know. I can only speak for the beef tacos that I got to enjoy but they tasted exactly as you'd expect. A nice crispy shell, warm shredded beef, topped with fresh veggies (lettuce and tomato I think), some melty cheese, with rice and beans on the side, also with cheese melted on top. There's nothing special about this taco and I suppose that's much, much better than remembering it for being terrible - definitely not the case here. What I did love here was the green salsa, which was excellent! A little tangy, a little bite and you're free to fill as many small cups as you like. I only grabbed a few for the group but it's safe to say that I'd drink this salsa by the gallon. Will I be back? Probably not, but not because I didn't enjoy my food. I wanted this place to be good since it is close to my work, but sadly I would drive across San Diego rather than eat here. I have tried it several times, but finally given up after my last visit. I've stopped by a few mornings and tried their bacon/egg/potato breakfast burrito and the potatoes are never fully cooked. They also taste dirty, like the potatoes aren't washed prior to cutting. My last visit there I ordered Carne Asada fries, but the usual girl on her phone wasn't there. I had to yell my order into the kitchen and I asked for no sour cream. I watched the guy dip my fries in the oil for less than a minute, add some pre-cooked meat and a scoop of sour cream. I told him no sour cream and he literally just threw out the portion he messed up with no replacement. The portion size for the price is high and the meat is POOR quality.
