The cashier & the cooks are so friendly & the place is clean & the service is really fast. I waited in this place for a while until finally a woman greeted me and said be right with you. I was there with only one other customer. Then after placing my order, I prepared the salsa. Then the woman came back and finally admitted the beans are no ready and will be awhile. Hmmm....that is pretty important info to relay to your customers when they already purchased burritos that have beans in them dont you think??? If you haven't eaten here in a while and you remember it was delicious? Think again! Not anymore! The most delicious carne asada i've ever eaten, GONE! The perfectly balanced fish tacos? Adios! I used to highly recommend this place and drive well out of my way to eat here and I will NEVER eat here again! We even asked for our money back from the not so pleasant lady working the counter and we NEVER do that! I should have known from the last time I ate here, something was off, all the prices went up, they had a new menu design, and a new staff. So When I ordered the fish tacos, they went from 5 star to three stars, easily, but I didn't put two and two together yet, everyone can have an off day right? WRONG! Tonight, we went for a carne asada burrito and what we got was super peppered, unbelievably dry and frankly the most insulting excuse for meat that Id even think twice serving my dog!! All the hot sauce in the world wouldn't salvage it, it was disintergrating in our mouths and you could visually see how old it was....two bites and it went right in the trash! The best Baja style Mexican food in San Diego, hands down. This place is what SoCal people call a "Taco Shop." A small restaurant-- only a few tables--order at a counter, and the food is prepared fresh. Wait times are always under 10 minutes, so while the food comes out fast, it is definitely not fast food quality. The guacamole is sublime--no adulterants like sour cream or mayonnaise--just the fresh taste of ripe avocados. The hot sauce is wonderful--prepared fresh daily and not vinagery. My personal favorite is the Special #3-- 4 rolled tacos with guacamole and cheese with a side of rice and beans for around $5. Also try their carne asada tacos. Hot carne asada, cool guacamole, and salsa mexicana on a warm corn torilla. They are just perfect. The beef taco is the epitome of a greasy taco. Shredded beef in a corn tortilla, deep fried, lettuce and cheese. Delicious, but not for those on a diet. I have eaten there entire menu over the past 20 years and it is all good, and everything is consistently fresh, hot and crisp. I have never had a bad meal in the 1000+ times I have eaten there. So sad. What used to be the best carne asada in town is now bottom of the list. Guac sucks, they skimp on cheese now, rolled tacos suck, beans suck-Not to mention the younger guy at the counter with the "I don't care" attitude. (There's a girl that works who's awesome-he should get some training from her). Used to come here all the time but it just keeps getting consistently worse. Been going to this place for years. Ever since there was one on Bradley and magnolia. That one closed over 20 years ago but this gem remains. I used to go there with my family for breakfast as a little kid now I take my kids and wife. Everything from carne asada burritos to rolled tacos are perfect. Wife also really enjoys the potato bacon egg and cheese burrito. I myself go with the classic combo #2 with guacamole. Beef tacos with rice and beans for those not in the know. Great salsa as well. But don't forget the hot carrots BEST IN SAN DIEGO! I challenge anyone to find a better bag. read more

Been going here with my wife and parents and others for years. But tonight was the last time. Their chicken burritos have always been good but tonight was beyond horrible. I showed the burrito to the Guy at the counter and the chef and explained how we eat here all the time and tonight the chicken burrito was burnt and dry and was just not good. They looked mad that I was not happy with food that never should have been served. The front counter kid (who drives a car far beyond what a regular employee would drive so I'm guessing he's the owner or owners son) looked at me like "oh well" and just said "it's the end of the night" "what? Do you want your money back" in a tone. Being hungry and having brought a friend who also will never go back I just got a bean and cheese burrito. Still a fail. Along with the chips with a smattering of cheese and a tiny bit of guacamole, I left with a bad taste literally in every way. This place has been around forever. I used to come here in High School. I always get the chimichanga. It is super delicious, but has a bit too many bell peppers, but I always forget to tell them to leave them off. Oh well, still good food. I want to give this place 5 stars because the Carne Asada Fries are some of the best in this part of town (the one in Rancho San Diego is better, but it's close). I knock it down to 4 because the other food is pretty standard (anything with carne asada is very good), and they only take cash which is a bit of a bummer when I need to go next door to 7-11 and pay 3 bucks to get cash for my fries. If you are in Santee and have some cash and a hankering for Mexican food, go here and get the fries, you won't be sorry. read more

Yesterday at 5:30 PM on Monday 4/4/2016 I had some very rude service from the male cashier. I only asked if I could have my Burrito cut and half and his reply was, "There is a knife(plastic) right there." So I asked if they weren't going to cut it thinking I heard wrong? His reply was, " No! There is a knife right there dude, do it yourself!" So I just left without saying anything. Trying to cut a California burrito with a dull plastic knife is such a pain plus, they have done this many times before for me not to mention that he was not doing the cutting anyway. The cook would do that! I usually get great service and food and would normally give this restaurant at least 4 stars and I realize this isn't their normal service. If I get an apology from the cashier and hear that they had some disciplinary actions done to the rude cahier, I will gladly delete this review off of yelp. Have been to Hilberto's periodically over the past five years mainly because I work nearby. Growing up in SD has made me an avid mexican eater. I have always thought that what makes a good "taco shop"(for me) is their chips and salsa,....mainly the salsa. I have eaten at Hilberto's enough times to comfortably say that the food is pretty good. My problem is that everytime I go the service is horrible. The peach at the counter is very dismissing and has at times seemed preoccupied by her phone. I have never got the attention that a paying customer should receive. It has always been an unpleasant experience. Maybe I'm just a sucker for salsa and fish tacos, but in all honesty I probably wont be going back. My two sense. Cheers! read more

Wow! I remember this franchise in the late 70s. Prices very reasonable for even a hi schooler that needed lots of late night food fast. The flying saucer was the ticket. The portions were generous and cant remember ever being disappointed. Wow have times change! I'm guessing now that Hibertos is established they feel volume can overcome chinciness. My rolled tacos were amazing!...that is amazingly disappointing. Tasted good but how many ways could you F-up tacos? No my "beef" is that there was very little guacamole and barely a trace of Mexican cheese topping. I called with my concern and the young man who said he was the owner was plesant and he said he would make it right. that's fine but who wants to drive back and then risk the nightmare of a cook scorned. No thanks! I think the owner should know what's coming out of that kitchen and believe he does. Therefore I suggest when your looking for a quick fix that you can do better then this. I won't ever be cheated from this location ever again. Ps to the owner-I hope the 25 cents you saved was worth a customer. read more
