Last week my wife & I decided to make Hildebrandt's the 1st stop on our Triple-D road trip. We were glad that we did. We started with the mozzarella sticks which were excellent. My wife loved her Chicken Sorrentino, but needed to ask for a doggie-bag because the portion was nice and large. I was a bit hesitant about ordering the pork chops because many places just don't do them right. Hildebrandt's DOES THEM RIGHT. Juicy, thick & delicious !! We weren't expecting our " french-fries " to come out looking nothing like traditional fries, but we were pleasantly surprised at how good they were. We both HAD to have the homemade ice cream for dessert. Maple Walnut for my wife & Chocolate Chip for me. I guarantee that you will not find better ice cream on this planet !! I've been going here since I was a teenager. It's been years since I've been back and I recently took my daughter. Most places change over the years but Hildabrants is still the same. A family owned so the same friendly faces were there which is always nice. Chicken Dakota was and still is my favorite dish. Love the old fountain sodas. The best part is the home made ice cream. Banana foster is delicious, my daughter lover her Sunday.....and can't leave without some chocolate to go. Glad to see the family owned business is still around! read more

Pro: I love their ice cream...seriously delicious Cons: The place looks dirty inside and they have terrible service. I went here once with a few people because I thought they would enjoy the ice cream and one of them ordered a cappuccino, which was on the menu. So we ordered and when my friend ordered the cappuccino the server said that he had to check if they could make it. What? You have the machine right there....what is there to check? So he literally went to the guy at the counter, asked him about it and when he came back said that the place was TOO BUSY and that they couldn't make it. So they aren't too busy to scoop ice cream and make desserts but they are so extremely busy that they can't make a cappuccino? There was no sorry, no apology, nothing. The attitude was pretty much just pick something that won't be too much trouble to make. This was a complete turn off and poor service. Next time, if a drink is too much for them to handle maybe they should take it off the menu. Or better yet, hire another employee. It sucks because I actually liked their ice cream but I just refuse to go back after being treated like that. Rude. read more

My family has been going to Hildebrandt's for years, back when Sue's parents ran the place. Now Sue and her husband Bryan run it, and they are great! We feel like family every time we come in. They very often have their son and daughter in the restaurant helping out, and contrary to one of the reviews I read, Dakota is a real sweetie, who is NOT 13 or 14, as he's just completed his first year of college! Their daughter can usually be found ringing up behind the candy counter (their candy is wonderful too!). As for the food - I've tried a lot of the Italian dishes, which all wonderful - real old-time Italian, like my Italian grandma used to make, but I always seem to go back to my "usual", which is the chicken burger. It's a very flavorful patty served on a roll with lettuce, tomato and very thinly sliced onion, and is complimented with a great honey mustard sauce. I usually order this with either the regular or the sweet potato fries, but a lot of time in the winter it's the onion soup for me! Their onion soup is probably the best I have ever had - the broth is sweet (they use Vidalia onions!), and there's the perfect amount of cheese and bread floating in it. In the summer I almost always order the gazpacho soup with my chicken burger, as they only make it in the summer. It's perfection in a bowl! I never seem to have room for food AND dessert, so will usually go for one or the other. Just went today with my elderly mother, who had a vanilla malted, which she says brings her back to her childhood in Brooklyn. I had my one of my "usual" desserts - a whipped cream sundae with chocolate ice cream (my other favorite, or "usual", is the Marshmallow Sundae - heavenly marshmallow sauce!). I've tried most of HIldebrandt's ice cream flavors, but usually end up with their chocolate, which to me is one of the best chocolate ice creams I've ever had. The "Whipped Cream Sprinkle Sundae" is served in a tall old-fashioned sundae glass, with home made (YUMMMM!!!!) whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles and a maraschino cherry on top. Tom makes all the ice cream, and also waits tables - he's a very nice guy. Ditto for Eli and Chris who work the counter. Everyone is very nice, although I don't know all of their names. Hildebrandt's is a dose of nostaglic old-timey ice cream parlor goodness - I was so thrilled to see they were on DDD! I don't know if Guy Fieri loads on the praise even if he isn't thrilled with the food, but in Hildebrandt's case, he's on the money! read more

Growing up in Bayside, my family frequented Hildebrandt's. Actually dating back to the '70s, my parents used to go on dates there when the restaurant would be transformed to a fine dining experience complete with a red carpet and gourmet chef. I recently revisited Hildebrandt's with my family after seeing them featured on Guy's triple-D. It's nice to see them flourishing like the good old days. We went there on 7/26/2011 based upon the other reviews. My spouse ordered a glass of milk with dinner and it was spit-out sour. They brought another which wasn't sour but was warm. As it turned out they had a refrigeration repair man there. How could they serve something out of a warm, broken refrigerator? Also, I had Chicken Kelly which as OK but my spouse had a burger which tasted like old meat. We sent it back. The host was defensive and argumentative. We decided to skip their famous ice cream. Very mediocre food. We ordered ice cream (Cappuccino, peach, Oreo and banana), mozzarella and steak, and lasagna. The waiter suggested we get the mozzarella and steak hero. It seems as if he had recommended that item due to it being priced highest in the sandwich category. The meat was extremely overlooked and rubbery. This is an old time soda fountain which has its charm but they should stick to what is comfortable. The food was not good bordering on real bad. I had the Thai Chicken Salad. I don't know what was Thai about it because it had a funky taste and the chicken was very dry. My wife had the eggplant parm hero which she said was horrible. The sauce was very salty and not tasty. The part that was decent was the ice cream. You can tell it was fresh and was made in the store. Lastly the service was good. Maybe in previous reviews the staff was having an off day or maybe people are expecting something gourmet...I don't know the answer but we were satisfied and pleased. The mozerella sticks were wonderful. Not oily and freshly made to order with a nice crunch and flavor. The fries are made from real potatoes and came out hot. As per my dining guest, the cookie dough sundae was unbelievable. She said it's a must try. On top of all this , we had two infants with us and the staff didn't even blink an eye. They got us high chairs, asked us what table we would prefer, and we're just plain wonderful. Our waitress even knew the exact time to bring the check ( babies have a time limit and she knew it). This is to all of the people out there who saw this place on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. They never, and when i say this i mean NEVER show the best dishes on that show. I live 5 minutes away from this place and have been going there at least every other week for the past 7 years, and i am a 3rd generation customer. This place is the best as it gets! Be sure to get a milkshake or an ice cream sundae. They are incredible at this place. Also when you order a hamburger, take a good look at those french fries. Hand cut and circular! You can't beat that. Also be sure to sit at the bar-type thingy in the front. You can see them cook. Plus, Hildebrandt's has one of those original Milkshake blending machines if you look!! They also have an old Coca-Cola soft drink dispenser. This place is incredible and you should really go there. No matter how long the drive is, take the trip! read more

There are very few of these old ice cream parlors left on Long Island. Plus, I came here as a little kid, so I have a real soft spot for the place. The ice cream is great (hot fudge sundaes with homemade ice cream, real whipped cream and little pitchers of fudge on the side for $4.75. Take that, Haagen Dasz and Coldstone!). The dinner entrees are also very good, with copious portions. They still make their own candy around the holidays and the decor hasn't changed much since my first visits in the '50s. My Family has be coming to Family owned Hildebrandts for many years and we are always greeted very warmly by every one who works their. We are seated promptly and given menus right away. The food is delicious to many favorites to name but every time I go I have the famous"Chocolate Egg Cream". Desserts are a must have but the only problem is if you came back every day of the week you still have not finished the dessert menu (I don't think that's a problem LOL). bring your family here. This is a real authentic restaurant. everything on the menu is fresh. I reccommend the lobster ravioli! Real chunks of tail meat for around 12 bucks. However, my burger was not good, it tasted like it was Bubba Burger meat. I really thought it would be like the burgers from my favorite ice cream place in Bay Ridge back in the old days. The service was terrible. The manager was extremely rude to me when I went back to calmly let her know my order was wrong. She even called me stupid that I asked for the ice cream cake I ordered a certain way, which one of the staff members said I could do. Not only did she call me stupid, but she told me at least I got the ice cream flavors I ordered and walked away from me when I was talking. Prior living in the area I made Hildebrandt's a destination restaurant for great food and deserts 4-5 times a month. It was and still is a great place to bring the family to for consistent great tasting food. Its one of the last old time old-fashioned ice cream parlous I'm familiar with within 50 miles. What an amazing place. I have been there several times growing up and recently decided to take my son there for his 1st Birthday. From the moment we arrived the staff was welcoming and inviting. It still has all of the charm and is unlike most anywhere else. The ability to feel like you are back in time and have that special feeling is great. Even better is the way that the staff made us feel. They thanks us for coming and sang him happy birthday. Then realizing it was a special day they even gave him a stuff animal - which has quickly become his favorite. It was a gesture that is rarely seen today. Amazing what people can write about one of the last mom and pop places to eat on the island! Have been going there for the past 20 plus years and where can you still get homemade orange aide. The food is filling and taste like mom just cooked it off a hot stove and the home made ice cream does not get any better! As for the rat tailed waiter there is no other person who I would like to be served by anywhere. Very polite and smart and can actually carry a conversation about almost any topic and be truthful and honest about it. The rest of the staff had been there for years and continues to serve the same wholesome home cooked type meals that customers like me have come back for daily, weekly and yearly that why it continues to be one of Long Islands true landmarks. Ordered a BLT and a Tuna melt. The BLT was good but the tuna was bad, not fresh and fishy tasting.I told who I think is the owner and instead of apologizing and offering to make us something else she defended the dish and said that the chef makes it fresh everyday. Let me tell you, I know what fresh tuna taste like and that aint it. The sandwich was removed from the bill. The gentleman that waited on us initially who I imagine to be the husband or part owner of the business demeanor quickly changed from cheerful and accommodating to very cold as I was paying him at the cashier counter.
