Repeat Customer, Repeat Rave I originally had Hill Construction out in 2012 and install a long driveway (70-80 feet) that goes from narrow, to a double its width, and a short walkway from the sidewalk to my steps. My home was built in 1894 and this was a serious upgrade from crushed rock. The next year I hired them again to install a lovely path (about 50 feet) on the other side of my house. I let several years go by. About a month ago I realized that all the pavers probably could use a refresh, so I contacted Roger. He remembered my house and the projects. We set up a time for him to come by. It was a pleasure to see Roger again. We walked all areas, he looked at everything and he agreed that my pavers were overdue for a cleaning and refresh. Within a day he provided a very reasonable quote, letting me know he would schedule me once he got the necessary materials from the supplier. He assured me the result would be very pleasing with more depth to the color. Roger and his brother, Steve, arrived the afternoon of March 24th. A full afternoon of thorough cleaning, which left me amazed upon the end of that process. The 25th was a long, full day of very meticulous and detailed work. I swear that every single "grout" line looks like it was addressed. New sand was applied, not missing any joins or spots. Then 2+ coats of sealant. I was truly amazed at the outcome. Some pavers were replaced, everything up to the standards of Hill Construction and exactly what Roger promised. They take pride in their work, and it shows. We had the unfortunate experience of having our previous contractor abandon our substantial backyard project prior to finishing. This project includes several structural retaining walls as well as about 1400 sqft of paver patios. I called several contractors to try to finish the job, but most were hesitant to take on someone else's work. We had Roger over to give a bid, and I could tell he was also hesitant, but he was sympathetic to our situation and offered to quote the completion of the job including adding the capstones on the walls and complete the patios. He then made several recommendations on materials and was very energetic about the project. Timing was right and they were able to start pretty quickly. Roger and his guys were incredible to work with, they were on site every day, worked efficiently, and completed the entire project in just under 5 weeks. The previous contractor did a poor job with pouring the base concrete for the stairs, making them uneven, but this was not a problem for Hill Construction Company, they were able to make the finished project perfect. When it came time for the railing to be installed, Roger even referred me to an incredible railing contractor who was able to make amazing rails to tie the entire project together. After several months, the project still looks perfect, very high quality work with amazing attention to detail. I did my research. You won't have to. I interviewed the top four rated and "big" local--companies in this industry (System Pavers Diamond Pavers Mr. Pavers --you know who they are). The sales guys typically came out gave a spiel and were friendly enough. Yet-- after comparing bids, I could see Hill Construction offered a very competitive bid and the scope of what was included broken down explained and THOROUGH! Additionally Rogert Hill--who has a great reputation by the way--the company owner came out. He is totally passionate about his work. He has integrity and is very much concerned with the end result--not just securing the sale. His follow-up communication throughout the job was stellar! The actual job (an extensive asphalt driveway tear-out-- Woodside) and paver installation was done efficiently. But best of all the final result of a new paved drive-way exceeded our expectations.These guys ARE ON TIME+ ON BUDGET. You won't get a better value for the this high-quality craftsmanship. We had our driveway pavement done by Roger and his crew in 2013. Today, it looks just as beautiful as when we first had it put in. We were having an issue with flooding in our garage floors when the rains came. Roger designed the driveway with drains. Those have pretty much kept our floors dry. We had been kind of gone back and forth with him about extending the work to include the steps and the porch as we saw how beautiful the driveway started to look when put in. Hill Construction just paved the driveway, walkway, and garden areas in front of our house in Belmont and we are THRILLED with the work. The house is down-hill from the street and we were afraid the slope and various level changes would provide a challenge for repaving; not so with Hill Co. We got bids from multiple companies in the area, and Hill's prices were spot on, but beyond that, the service and consideration was outstanding. Before we had agreed to anything, Roger, the owner, personally came out and looked at our house, then drew up a multi-page, extremely detailed proposal that covered every concern we had and many that we didn't even think of. His level of expertise was clear from the moment we saw the plans, which accounted for every visual and practical (drainage, lighting, accessibility) aspect of the job. Just got a bid from Roger at Hill Designs. I think the price is good, but I liked the way he laid everything out. I have a 15,000 sq foot drive way and the paving stone and the description of how to put it down to last a long time was so clear, it took me by surprize. This guy is just so articulate and explains so well you just have to do business with him. He showed me other work that He has done and He is quite the perfectionist and clear in his design layout. BETTER THAN ALL THE OTHERS I HAVE TALKED WITH! My wife was enthralled and has made the decision, but I still need a few more bids, but Roger is on the short list for the job, I will edit this if and when the job is complete. Roger Hill was awesome at helping to plan our retaining wall and paver project, and his crew were on time and worked super hard. I was very pleased with the work. Highly recommended! I only had 2 issues: 1) I emphasized repeatedly that we were to try as hard as possible to keep the neighbor's bushes alive (they were on a fence that had to be removed), and the bush ended up dying. Neighbor relations are important, and the crew didn't pay enough attention to this area. 2) During the paver installation process, a lot of the gap filler they use between paver stones sprayed onto my front door and hardened into little pebbles that are impossible to get off. Roger evaluated the damage and said that it couldn't have been them, but the door was clean before, and they were literally the only folks who worked on the house during that timeframe. We managed to pry off a few of the little stones, and concluded that it was not pressure-based embedding into the glass; rather, it's likely that the filler becomes epoxy-like when it gets wet and dries. They were supposed to come back with a cleaner to see if it would take it off, but there was no follow up after they left. I think the door will have to be replaced if we decide we want to fix this particular problem. These were relatively minor, though--still highly recommended. We recently moved into a newly constructed home with approx. 450 SQFT. of dirt in our yard. After deciding we wanted pavers and the type/style, we researched a few local paving companies in the Tri-Valley area. We figure the cost would be decent because the company was local and we wanted to support local businesses. We received 3 bids and some of the breakdown/ "to do list" on the quote just did not make sense to us. Example..drain cover will cost $500 per, low quality pavers were being priced the same for Belgard type. We then decided to give Hill Construction a call. After watching his videos and the before and after pictures on his website we were really impressed with the quality of work. After exchanging emails back and forth, we set a time for Roger Hill to stop by to give us a quote. We warned him our patio is small and we thought Roger wouldn't take a small job and being far away. He arrived on time and asked us what we wanted and how we envisioned our patio. After telling him, he also made suggestions on a few things that my wife and I would never thought of. His vision and honesty made us trust his decision. We were excited about the sketch and plans. Although not the lowest bid, we decided to hire Roger. My first review on yelp and i have to give 5 stars to the Hill co team for doing an excellent job in giving ideas on landscaping and installing the pavers in my backyard. Roger gave a clear idea about what he is going to do and how he is going to lay the pavers to keep them in good shape for years. It has been 5 years since Roger installed the pavers and i have done zero maintenance on the pavers and it still looks good as new. While he was at it, he also noticed how the water from the downspout was going back into the foundation, so he extended it underground to a bubbler away from the foundation. He was also pretty honest about what makes a good landscaping - when i had asked if we can put pavers throughout the backyard, Roger did advice the importance of mixing hardscape and existing "soft"scape to give a nice look. He also noticed that mulch and soil from the planting area was spilling over, so he gave an idea to border the planting area with paver - affordable and yet gave a very clean look to our backyard. While working on the yard, he also put in 4 brackets for future fencing of trash cart area. We did put a small fence few years later, after the pavement work - it looks great now. He also underlaid couple of small pipes across a thin area of paver so we can get some electrical and plumbing/drip system across without having to remove pavers later. Such simple thoughtful ideas make a lot of difference when you design your landscaping rather than adding them later. While working on the paver, he also gave ideas on how to shape the pavement areas to get a nice curved look. I give Roger Hill Constructions 5 stars for 1. completing the work on time 2. being reasonable in price 3. Keeping the place clean throughout the job and 3. most importantly taking genuine interest in our landscaping, by giving ideas on what will make our backyard look better. read more

I have used Roger Hill for driveway pavers and for artificial lawn. I had a bid from another reputable company. I do not know how well the other contractor would have done, but I do not know how he could have done better than Roger Hill. I picked Hill construction not only because he was cheaper, but also because the man knows his job. He loves his works, and it shows. Roger is not a "rough" construction worker, he is an artist how care about the design, the colors, the shapes. He suggests alternatives to your own plans in order to save you money while preserving a good look. You feel like speaking to a friend who is an expert at what you need, not just a sales person. I believe he did for us the same quality job he would have done for himself. While the other bidding contractor (and myself) missed some details, Roger pointed them to us. His crew was punctual, polite, and careful to leave everything clean. Roger inspects after them, and before you even notice, Roger updates you on details he would like fixed. We told Roger what we wanted for pavers and a wall but Roger had a vision for the job. We're glad he used his vision. Aesthetically, the job better than we thought. A border color and 45 degree paver-setting make a nice effect. The wall was better than expected too with french-drainage, lighting and irrigation tubing ready to go. You can't see it but (2) downspouts from the roof used to run down the driveway. Roger's guys piped all that underneath and you don't see a thing. From a logistical and functional standpoint, I (an engineer) was very happy with the way things are hidden and the flexibility they provide moving forward.
