As an adult, I thought of Hillcrest when my work was having an event recently, as well as last year for Valentine's Day (those featured cookies again...). This time around we ordered pies, and they were a HIT. The pecan was excellent, the marionberry was so fresh and berry-ful and the pumpkin was just as pumpkin pie should taste. But the two standouts for me were the apple and the strawberry rhubarb. I used to think I didn't like SR until I had it from here. I am now in love. And the apple is the best I have ever had. We ordered a custom cake from Hillcrest Bakery. The only reason we ordered from here was because we like their marzipan bakes in the store. Naturally we ordered a cake with marzipan. When it came time to pick up the cake, we noticed it was covered in buttercream. We were confused and asked if the marzipan was underneath and they said yes. We thought that was weird, but trusted them. When we got home, we cut into the cake. Lo and behold, there was no marzipan as I suspected. We called back and they offered to refund ONLY the marzipan charge. We are pretty disappointed as the cake isn't what we wanted. Having buttercream instead of marzipan changes the whole flavor profile. And they only refunded us just the marzipan. I feel they either should have offered to take the cake back and redo it or they should have either refunded us more (either from the cost of the cake or the tip). Our emails with them show that the order error wasn't on our part, and the marzipan charge was part of the receipt so this is entirely Hillcrest Bakery's mistake. I don't know if I'd order a custom cake from here again based on this experience. Just stick to what's premade behind the counter. read more

Cannolis are great! We got chocolate and vanilla. I don't know what kind of filling they use but it is delicious. The outer shell is also very crispy/crunchy, not soggy like other places. I am a little worried we found this place because it is relatively close to home and now I have another temptation that I need to fight. But I might be OK taking this L. The Bread and pastries are great. Cookies are one-note though & don't actually have much difference in taste despite supposed regional differences. However their Cake decorating Service really is poor. Out of the 6 cakes I've ordered for birthdays and paid decorating fees for, 3 were not inscribed/decorated per written request that the counter person had written down and approved, & one cake was so stale as to be rock hard in parts & bad tasting. I always allowed 4 to 7 days lead time for a cake. I get a patronizing and lackluster apology that definitely sounds ungenuine, no refund of decorating fees, and a promise that it will never happen again -- then it happens again. (see RCW 62A.2-615, RCW 19.86, and general contract law. I believe RCW 9A.56.020 doesn't apply since I don't think there was an intent) I've been polite to them and quiet but no longer. I needed a bunch of pastries for our German club meeting on the weekend, so I called them on Thursday and put in a large order for 70 various pastries. I had no idea what they would look or taste like since it had been probably ten years since I had been there, but I was pleasantly surprised. I picked them up on Saturday evening and everything looked neat and tasty in the six boxes. At the meeting, the people were so excited and happy to eat these sweets! They said they tasted just like real German pastries: the dough was light and airy, the fillings were moist and flavorful, and they were not too sweet! This really is a big deal coming from people who tend to be picky about food! :) I would have given them five stars, but I was bummed that they didn't give even a small discount for that many pastries. They were around $3.50 each which added up fast. I think I would order here again in the future, especially if money is no issue. Far superior to Top Pot's fritter. They could serve this at El Gaucho for $14 with a scoop of vanilla bean and it would not disappoint. 2. Raspberry or lemon bullseye. 71 out of 5 stars. Shut your eyes and taste it good. Delicate and slightly acidic. Not greasy. Also not very big so consider ordering two. Just wait until after I get mine as they often run out. Ordered Black Forest birthday cake from Hillcrest. The decorator reused dry fondant piece from another cake to write message for the birthday cake. Front writing in chocolate was "Happy Birthday Mom" and on the back writing in Marker "Happy 50th Anniversary" When ordering the cake, I was asked to provide a tip dedicated to the Decorator. Here it is: Prepare your cakes in a clean, sanitary method and not reuse other order decorations for cakes. I used to get there muffins and donuts couple weekends in a month. The decoration of a single, less than 4" icing basketball on the flat sheet cake was an additional $15 charge and was very poorly done. The lettering was uneven, smudged and poorly piped. Because I had a poor experience when I first made the transaction 3 days prior and it was already paid for and completed, I was hoping it would at least taste good, so I left with the poorly decorated cake. The flavor of the hazelnut filling was very faint and the cake was dry. My experience as a first time customer while making the purchase was not ideal, but nevertheless the actual product I received was not worth the amount I paid. The decorations lacked the effort I was hoping would be put forth for the additional charge I was told to pay for the product I would receive. I've purchased from many vendors and businesses for the parties I have hosted. The Hillcrest Bakery in downtown Bothell is one of the best bakeries in Washington State, and definitely in Western Washington. Run by the Kaske family since 1965, this bakery epitomizes the classic neighborhood bakery, with made-fresh items every day, including some of the best donuts and baked goods you will ever eat. The apple fritters are to die for. The bear claws are the most delicious breakfast pastry I've ever eaten in my life. The cinnamon rolls are huge--nearly seven inches in diameter, and not even worthy to be compared to Cinnabon. The maple bars are over-the-top delicious. The Marzipan cakes were heaven. The blueberry muffins--awesome. Homemade breads, tarts, pastries, cakes and other treats make it a winner if you can afford it. Prices are significantly higher than grocery store bakeries, but the extra cost is worth it if you are trying to impress family or friends. But because money is tight now and I can get a dozen good-quality donuts at Safeway for $6.00, I don't come here any more because the prices are just too high. Like I said, it's more of a once-in-a-great-while treat, rather than a daily or weekly thing. Price is everything! At this point in my life, I cannot justify $25 for a dozen donuts. My family has gone here for generations. My mother and niece, who are picky doughnut consumers, both loved these. "How are they firm and fluffy at the same time!?" The prices are reasonable. $5.80 for a half dozen. There is a good selection as well as other great options besides doughnuts. There is a small area to sit and eat there if you like.
