This deli is close to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, and conveniently located, but the food is not the greatest. Buffet food is overcooked and dry. No clear container to cover food to avoid contamination. Covid -19 just ended, and ppl are still coughing, and not covering mouth. Lastly, the grill person can't fry a hamburger or bacon or eggs w/out over cooking it. A burger is supposed to be moist & juicy, and bacon not burnt. He cooks the egg too soon too long and it burns. The owner, need to retrain his cook staff. Prices are too high for burnt food. This deli is not crowded as it use to be bc the deli burns any fry foods you request, killing the taste. I only go here when I'm desperate, but owner lost lots of customers bc burnt, dry & tasteless food. read more

I recently stopped by Hilltop with a friend to grab coffee and some food. I usually love this place to get AM coffee because I really like the flavor and strength of it as well as the friendly service. This was my first time trying food from the grill and they have a bunch of different options such as hot subs, breakfast items, deli sandwiches, burgers, some salads. Since it was a Sunday around noon I decided to get a an everything bagel sandwich with egg whites, cheese, and avocado. The bagel was nothing out of this world in terms of quality but had a good flavor and was toasted nicely. I thought the egg whites were very well cooked since they did not feel soggy or oily which I find is usually the problem when getting eggs on a bagel. They put generous amounts of cheese which was exactly what I needed as my Sunday morning splurge and also added a nice amount of green and fresh avocado. It was very good! I think getting a bagel sandwich at an actual bagel place is definitely better but for the sake of convenience if you happen to be in the area and do not want to go to far, this is pretty acceptable and filling. My friend got the grilled chicken sandwich which looked very good and he enjoyed it! Next time would try one of their hot sandwiches as those seem to be very popular and the menu is extensive. Also, fun fact, they have some seating available inside behind the counter which I had no idea about until this weekend which is spacious and clean. Their lunch buffet is also pretty good, at least as of last time I had it which was a year ago. This is a small coffee shop situated in the lobby of the Mailman Building of Columbia University. First off, it's very convenient for me since I work in the same building. The usual staff is very cognizant of everyone needing to get in and get out. They make an effort to remember the regulars' orders. In the morning you can get bagels and oatmeal. For lunch they have a limited but fresh selection of pre-packaged sandwiches, pasta and quinoa salads. They also offer a variety of soups, yogurts and beverages, including coffees and teas. Everything is fresh and has a rapid turnaround time since they are a satellite of the main brick and mortar location a couple of blocks north of the building. read more

I debated with myself whether to leave 3 or 4 stars. I won't say other reviews left are wrong. The prices aren't cheap and the food could definitely be better. However the staff is super friendly and their selection is what keeps me coming back. I also live ridiculously close and convenience is king. They have a vast variety of domestic and foreign products from grocery to international craft beers. And whoever purchases for the store has good taste, the products get rotated and they're always introducing new things I would never find on my own. So too recap, prices could be better.. but as a neighborhood store on a tucked away street .. you'll find things you won't find elsewhere and if you're local you'll love getting to know the people. read more

A staple of any Columbia University Medical School student or faculty experience, Hilltop Perk is the go to cafe, deli and corner grocery on Haven Ave. Perfect for an on the go breakfast or lunch, Hilltop boasts a deli sandwich station where you can order egg sandwiches, omelets, hero's, burritos, quesadillas among other things. In the back is an buffet during the week for both breakfast and lunch with things like sushi, guac, mac and cheese, etc. Both the sandwich station and buffet have a ton of options and are fairly reasonably priced. The grocery section has a decent amount of variety and is a little bit more pricey than going to a grocery store, but it saves you the walk if you live next door. The assortment of asian foods including pre-made dumplings and sauces is a nice touch. There is some seating if you want to eat or drink your coffee inside. Definitely 5/5 stars! read more

This place is definitely a place you'd pass right by and not even know a store exists behind the doors! This deli is off to the side but it's worth coming to see what it's all about! My friend usually gets the items off the hot bar, she says the quality is better in the morning so I will have to go back and check it out then! They have all sorts of pasta, rice, and chicken dishes. They also offer a salad bar and interestingly enough, sushi. I came in around 5pm and nothing on the hot bar really interested me but I did get a Monte Cristo from the grill! I loved the sandwich; there's was a good bread to meat ratio and overall a not too heavy meal. The prices are alright. It's not expensive but it's also not cheap in comparison to other choices. Let me start by saying this is a review on their Italian combo sandwich only. First, at least they got the ingredients right; ham, salami, prosciutto(that's why I went there), provolone, lettuce, tomato, roasted red peppers, oil and vinegar. But coming in at almost $9 with tax, this sandwich was a pitiful example of an Italian combo. An Italian combo is supposed to be big but this was super skimpy. It had 2 slices of ham, 3 slice of salami, 2 slices of prosciutto and 2 slices of provolone. All of it cut so thin that you couldn't taste anything and served on the spongiest hero bread ever. I can't speak for the rest of their offerings but would never order that(or any) sandwich from there again. read more

Note: this is for the hilltop perk inside Hammer Health Sciences, not off of Haven Ave. My experience here is always erratic. Some days the service is quick and efficient, other days you will be waiting to be called to the counter (or waiting at the counter) while staff carry-on to have their own conversations. Not a big deal but most of the time I only have a 5-min break in class and need to get my coffee or snack quickly. What really bothered me today was that I asked for a small tea in a medium cup. So literally put the 12oz into a 16oz cup so that the tea doesn't spill all over (it always does). The staff member was polite but told me that they charge by the cup, not the amount of liquid. So I just got a small size because I really didn't want that much to drink. They didn't fill the cup up very far. This was really just annoying. I almost wanted to ask for more water when my class was over but it sounds like they probably would have charged for the water... I will make it a point from now on to get coffee or tea from the Halal Truck outside. I heard it tastes better anyways. read more

It's so lovely having a small, boutique deli on Haven Avenue. Their buffet options are acceptable, especially if you grab them as close to their originally serving as possible (I assume 12 noon), because everything gets funky with time as usual with any buffet. The quality of the buffet food is standard buffet, but since they have maybe 20 feet of buffet space, their real skill is in the selection. There's a surprising variety of options available from this much smaller than usual setup. Then there's the deli. Custom ordered sandwiches. All downtown manhattan prices, but acceptable quality. Dont' bother to eat in, it's kind of depressing. But if you want or need to, that option exists. And one your way out, don't forget to check out their little market section to pick up some dorm-room staples before heading back home; wherever that is. read more

A convenient and cheap place to grab food in area. They have buffet-style food choices during the week (M-F) where you can fill up a container with food to go and it's charged by weight. I can usually get a really decent amount of food for about $8-$9. The food itself is good, sometimes it can get a bit dry towards the end of the day but if you come for lunch it tastes great. Lunch options are served after 11 AM and the options can vary from day to day (generally they have things like salad, teriyaki chicken, stir fried veggies, sushi, salmon, etc.). Before 11, they also have a breakfast buffet with things like french toast, eggs, and sausage. The buffet-style take out isn't available on weekends, but they also make great sandwiches here (I really like the Korean BBQ sandwich). Overall, Hilltop is fast and filling and I come here pretty often when I want something quick and affordable, but still healthy. read more

I've been coming here every weekend for a while now, but the quality of service has dropped recently. There's a new deli guy who works Weekend mornings, and he's messed up the last three orders I've gotten from him (and I've only ordered from him three times). It's a bacon, egg white, and cheese on an English muffin, every time, but he's forgotten the bacon twice, and forgotten to use egg whites twice, and most recently there was literally nothing but eggs (with yolk) in the sandwich. Today, I stood in front of the checkout counter for over a minute, because the checkout person was staring at their phone under the counter. Not sure what's going on, seems like new weekend staff is either incompetent or completely unmotivated when there's no boss around. Veggie Burger | Being on lent, my options for all things tasty is limited. I enjoy their buffet because it gives me a variety of things to choose from with vegetables. However, since the buffet was closed during the weekend, thought I'd give the hot grill section a try. I ordered the Veggie burger and I didn't enjoy it at all. It was a vegetarian patty that I had tried before at another local resturant and I didn't like it. The patty was thicker however it wasn't cooked to a crisp on the outside. Inside you can include additional items such as lettuce, tomatoes and mushrooms with your choice of cheese inside a brioche bun. Not going to try this again. read more

I have been a regular here since it first opened a few years ago. The buffet has a good and diverse selection, taste of most dishes is great. Every now and then they have fancier options like oxtail stew or grilled salmon. Last year I would've given them a 5/5, but the quality has steadily declined. In particular, their salmon sashimi which I used to love now tastes rancid 80% of the time - definitely not fresh, sometimes it even tastes like plastic wrap. One time even the grilled salmon smelled rancid. I've found hairs in my salads, and strands of uncooked pasta. It's truly a shame that this is happening considering the $$$ The grocery store and sandwich section remain safe. read more

This is WaHi's best kept little secret, a true gem set in a part of the neighborhood that's almost *too* far removed from a bodega or deli. Truly, this spot is off of the beaten path, two blocks west of Broadway and north of major NYP and CUMC buildings. Even if you find it, its facade is rather unassuming. Then...you walk inside. There are smaller locations inside of respective CUMC buildings for CUMC and NYP staff, but this location Haven Avenue is full-service. From coffee and pastries to a really nice hot buffet to apartment necessities (pantry items, plastic bags, a small assortment of fruits and veggies), the amount of items you can buy here is quite astonishing! It's a hair pricy; a brand of iced tea I normally buy for $1.75 at a grocery store on the UWS sold for $4 here (!!!). The hot buffet is $8.49 a pound for lunch items, but I'm generally pleased with the selection; their beef brisket keeps me coming back! This section of WaHi has lots of hit or miss options for lunch; we all tend to rotate between Chipotle, Jou Jou, or the cast of great other burger and pizza places popping up, but this Hilltop Perk location definitely has all you want away from the crowded lines of fellow hospital and college staff milling along Broadway. read more

I really like the salad bar - even though it's by weight and that really can add up. If you aren't worried about paying a bit more than usual for lunch - at least you'll get a yummy, healthy lunch! Ultimately, I'm a fan of the brussel sprouts, so that's probably my fault a bit haha. If you try the deli part - all of the sandwiches are good. In particular, a friend and I used to often get the breakfast chorizo burrito. It is really good - even if you do feel like you'll need a nap afterwards instead of starting work for the day lol. In all, this place is a bit more expensive than you might want to see at a neighborhood cafe, but it's not totally unreasonable and there are definitely yummy, healthy options. read more

My offices go to lunch spot when no-one can decide what they want. Everything is pretty solid. It's a little crazy in terms of variety in that you can find everything from Mac and cheese to sushi...but I like it. The prices are reasonable. As a Columbia student on the medical campus, it is easy to say that food options are slim. A friend told me about an amazing Hilltop Perk and I knew that it couldn't be the one in the Hammer Lobby. This is the one that is on Haven, a few blocks past the Barnes & Noble/Starbucks cafe. It is a deli/grocery store/buffet, and has so many food options! You can get vegetables and other groceries, bags of chips and other snacks, sandwiches made for you, and the selection at the buffet is huge. They have different types of meat from chicken and steak to salmon. Their sides and salad bar are delicious as well. I believe it is $7.99 a pound, and honestly, its better to get good food like that than to pay $6.99 for a mediocre sandwich in the Hammer lobby. read more

This place is in between 3-4 stars, but I give them the benefit of the doubt. For the bagels: they are really good, especially the scallion cream cheese! The nova/salmon with it is also good, and I thought the price was decent. Their buffet food was actually pretty good. I thought it was quite flavorful, and a good variety. The coffee...is a hit or miss :( My boyfriend and cousin visited and got an iced mocha one day which was AMAZING. But the second day it was not as good, sadly. I also had my cappuccino and latte not consistently made. However, I now always order a cortado which is AMAZING. It has been consistent so far, and is strong just like I like and need my coffee drinks! read more

I think that it's a good distance away from the campus, which means you'll have a nice one or two block walk away from misery when you decide to come here for lunch. I came here randomly one day with my friend who said he was going to buy me lunch from here. Cool. They have a really good hot buffet selection that changes every day (because I've been here more than once and have not had the same thing twice) and what seems to be a great deli as well. There isn't really much to say about this place except that so far, all of my experiences have been pretty solid. I'm probably going to come get my lunch from here tomorrow before my class. I mean, obviously, this isn't a place that's OMG U NEED 2 GO HURRRR but it's definitely done a solid job of getting my stomach through for the day. I think what's really interesting is that they have both a hot buffet for breakfast and for lunch, but since I've never been here before noon, I can't really attest to that. ALSO THEY ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS Y'ALL (there's like a $6 or $8 minimum but it's very easy to spend that much when you're eating with your eyes and not your stomach). The deli is really great for both breakfast and lunch options, and the people that work here are also friendly and helpful. During the week there is a breakfast hot bar in the morning. Awesome place if you're looking for a quick bite to eat or coffee. During the week, their buffet is delicious, offering a wide variety of meats, vegetables, and fruits. If you don't want the buffet, the grill is also a good choice. For breakfast, I recommend their bagels with the lox spread and for lunch the Korean BBQ sandwich. Be aware that the chicken in their Caesar salad is fairly dry. read more
