Back at Sugar Hill Cafe after years away! I used to live in the neighborhood when Sugar Hill first opened. It was my go-to spot for studying, meeting for coffee with friends, or grabbing a drink to or from work. I'm glad to see it's still open, and still as good as ever! I love that it's close to the train station, close to the street but tucked away underground, and the service is always fast and friendly. A handful of seats are normally available inside but I've also seen it super packed. Got a matcha lemonade for this unusually hot autumn October weather. I don't get it. This is supposed to be some cute trendy, hidden gem, neatly tucked in the basement of a building, so easy to miss if you're not looking for it. We were excited to go here based on some of the reviews, but were sorely disappointed by the lackluster food, high prices and rather blah counter interaction. C'mon people. Smile at least. I wasn't completely satisfied with my Brunch Order, but they did their best to make sure I didn't leave upset. I think it's Me. I think I (hope) that people are happy to be in the service industry. Sadly I am realizing that isn't always the case. We came here for breakfast this past Saturday 7.6.24 myself, Little Bit and my grandkids it was like pulling teeth to get more simple syrup for my Arnold Palmer and when I asked specifically that my Eggs Benedict 'poached' eggs be prepared runny... I received a look of "well of duh" yet they weren't runny. I will say this though the hollandaise sauce was on POINT and the bacon was good too. They have outdoor seating but we moseyed our way down the steps to where the restaurant was and sat inside. They had a communal table as well as 2 tops and (1) 4 in the rear by the restroom. I walked in to a very busy place with no seats. Low and behold one of the tables was occupied by the manager who was on her computer. She finally decided to help the cashier prepare some of the orders and she didn't wash her hands. The puzzlement to me is why she didn't give up her table to seat customers. When I asked if she was the owner she proudly said "I'm the manager." as I walked out with frustration she had the nerves to say have a good day. I guess that's all they taught her. I recently took a trip to New York with a couple of friends and early Sunday we wanted to get a quick bite to eat near 145th street before catching a flight back home. This was the perfect underground spot with GOOD breakfast food. The place is very small/tiny but you should expect tight spaces when coming to New York! Also, If your not from New York then you would think that the cashier look annoyed but that's just New York so I didn't mind at all! The food didn't take that long to come out and when asking for coffee recommendations I was able to receive good selections but I decided to settle for a nice bottle of apple juice which is in the fridge right next to the register I end up getting a build your own omelette with avocado, bacon on the side and onions, cheese inside of the egg. It was DELICIOUS' I finished my plate quick cause I was soooo hungry! I never knew food could taste that good. I really enjoyed their breakfast food. Very moist , bacon was crisped just right. I also love the house fries as well. I added alittle salt just because I like more salt on my potatoes. I would definitely come back again for the food but I would try to come early so I wouldn't have to worry about the seating. The seating is terrible and wish there was more tables dedicated for large groups to but we made the best of our the space we had. 8/10 just because of the space! The food was great. Was visiting a friend who has lived in the neighborhood for quite a while and decided to check out this place. A Saturday brunchy kind of day. They were BUSY and they gave those of us in line that it would be at least 35 mins. It was. I really wanted to try them and I was starving so we stayed. Plus the menu was intriguing. I had the kimchi omelet or Korean Omelet per the inside chalkboard menu. The eggs were over cooked but I gobbled it up. The kimchi was, thankfully in the omelet and not in the egg mixture itself. The omelet went very well with the lightly seasoned home fries. The salad that came with it was super fresh with cherry tomatoes, cucumber and greens. The dressing was oddly sweet and not what I would normally go for but you can't beat fresh greens. Unfortunately, cucumbers and tomatoes give me hives on my face so I had to leave them in the plate. My fault for me not asking that they be taken out. I got the hives later so I know the cucumbers were very fresh and that's a great thing imo. Can you tell that I miss eating tomatoes and cucumbers?? The person who prepares it does an amazing job, and the flavors were always on point--especially knowing it's made by a talented Latin cook. However, my last few experiences have been disappointing. One time, they got my order wrong, and when I politely asked for it to be corrected, the girl who assisted me was extremely rude. She made the coffees with a bad attitude and handed them over as if she was doing me a favor. Despite this, I kept coming back because I really enjoyed the breakfasts. Unfortunately, during my last visit, the experience was even worse. From the moment we arrived, the uncomfortable looks we received made the environment feel unwelcoming. On top of that, my food arrived late and was cold, which made it hard to enjoy. As much as I enjoyed the breakfast here in the past, I've decided to stop coming.
