Such a cute, bustling neighborhood cafe with amazing baked goods! We got a table without a reservation pretty easily at 2pm on a weekend but it was super crowded and busy. Our server was prompt with our orders. Our drinks came pretty quickly though I would not recommend the iced latte - it tasted bland/watered down. The food took a very very long time. We were pretty hungry so we flagged down our server to also order a few pastries to eat while we waited. The silver lining was that the baked goods were so delicious - the scones were excellent and I'd say they probably have one of the best chocolate chip cookies in nyc. This has been one of my favorite spots in the neighborhood for breakfast, but I was recently very disappointed by an experience I had with a cashier. I haven't had this happen before and I think despite a busy line, this person could have been more patient and kind with her service. As someone that's worked as FOH cashier and host in the past I believe tone of voice matters. She asked what I wanted and I asked if they had dessert available from the menu and she said no in a snarky way and looked at me like I was supposed to know. This was my first time coming on a Sunday in the afternoon and I am new to the area. Your menu says you serve dessert so I asked to make sure as I know some menu items are only available at certain times. I asked if they don't offer it at all anymore to confirm and mind you I didn't even say it rudely. This person spoke to me like she was so annoyed by my question. I think I'd enjoy this place more if service was consistent. It really sucks when someone ruins the vibe. I understand it gets annoying to repeat answers but to take it out on customers is so rude. When I decided on a bakery item, I said I wanted a "cookies and cream" cupcake and she proceeded to speak to me as if I didn't answer her clearly (which I did) and asked me which cake I wanted in a very annoyed way. I ignored her tone and repeated myself kindly. She then took my order and asked if I wanted anything else to which I said yes. Then, I saw freshly baked cupcakes come out that had coconut on it and purple icing. There was no name tag on the glass so I didn't know what kind it was but I knew it had some coconut on it. Food and Drink: I have had there cupcakes, pastries, piece of cake, hot chocolate, and coffee. The quality is very high and the price point is accurate to the similar cafe's around the city. Recently, we ordered two slices of cakes and they were very substantial and filling. I live olive oil cake and some of the savory items too. Service: I always feel welcomed here. One my last visits, the staff has been on top with following up on orders. I tried to host a community event there, and was left with an extremely sour taste when I was forced to cancel at the last minute after being faced with a sudden $1,000 room fee and minimum per-person food charge when the number of guests exceeded an imaginary maximum. It turned out that the owner's wife (or co-owner, depending on who you ask) had her own policies that were different from what their staff stated when I initially set up the event. She was aggressive and condescending, and when I stood up for myself, she screamed at me for ten minutes then hung up on me. Part of her tirade included saying that they don't particularly want people coming in for pastries and coffee, but rather full meals because the tickets are bigger. Quite an odd position for a cafe/bakery to take! All my work and personal expense, along with the potential for future customers for them, went right out the window. I had made a reservation online since this place seems popular. Shortly after we sat down, around 11:30AM or so, the place got much more crowded. Seems like the brunch rush started around 11:30AM and died down around 1PM. The tables are very close together, and some are quite close to the bar seating as well. It's not a comfortable space if you are sitting at one of the seats against the wall. The stand alone 4 top tables in the middle of the restaurant seem to be spaced out for some more breathing room. I had a chai, mango iced tea and the ABQ Benny. I also took home two cookies to go. The food is very good, especially the buttermilk biscuits. There are multiple things I would come back to try. My friend had the savory Dutch baby which she enjoyed. There are two bathrooms which were clean and fun looking with cute wallpaper. The noise level in the restaurant is pretty loud. Also, this place seems to attract families, so there were some kids running around and being annoying (parents fault), but something to keep in mind. The only thing causing me to deduct a star is the service. Even before the restaurant got crowded, service was pretty inattentive. I had to ask for things multiple times and our server also forgot we hadn't ordered, so we sat there for a while without even ordering. I tried the huevos rancheros, and it seems the chef once heard a vague description of the dish and just winged it. The eggs themselves were fine, but everything else was a disaster. The tortillas, which are supposed to be fried, were replaced with mass-produced hard taco shells. The beans, which should be refried and served on the side, were instead dumped on top of the shell and fell apart while eating. The sauce that's supposed to be warm and runny was replaced with cold pico de gallo and guacamole. This is the first time I've ever seen guacamole served with huevos rancheros. I know this isn't a Mexican restaurant and this may have been their interpretation, but it feels lazy and borderline disrespectful to the dish. I can tell they were struggling to keep up with the volume of people coming to eat or buy pastries. Everything on the menu and on tables looked delicious, but unfortunately my meal wasn't. Not only did we have to wait a considerably long time for our meals (understandable, it happens), but our food did not come out hot. Most of our dishes were cold by the time we started digging in- what's the point of eggs and biscuits if they're not warm?! The food lacked salt as well and the waitress had taken our salt and pepper when we sat down, so we had to wait a while until someone could bring some salt in a bowl for us to use. At this point we were already halfway through our meals. The biscuit and gravy wasn't bad, and neither were the other meals. Mine, the savory Dutch baby, had potatoes that were undercooked and inedible, one of my poached eggs were over cooked and the dish was overall quite dry. Overall, it's a really cute spot to enjoy a brunch when it's done well. We got a few pastries to go which seemed to be their specialty because they redeemed themselves through their sweets and scones. And no one, especially those behind the counter, ever looks happy. I've been meaning to check out Dutch Baby Bakery ever since they opened, which I believe wasn't long ago (maybe a little over a year now?). We stopped in last weekend during a slushy sleety day thinking it would probably be empty due to the inclement weather, but it was quite the contrary. We were lucky enough to get the last table for 2 available amidst the steady traffic. To eat, we ordered the French toast, tato hash, and a loaded biscuit sandwich (egg whites, ham, and sausage gravy). The food did take a little while to come out but it arrived hot and fresh. My biscuit sandwich was delicious and hit the spot. The French toast was also great - not too soggy or sweet! My girlfriend enjoyed her cappuccino and my drip coffee was good too. The service was friendly and our waitress checked in on us frequently. I noticed they also had a bar so you could do a real brunch here if desired. I've been a loyal customer, recommending it to friends and family, attending comedy shows, and buying countless pastries. I visit at least once a week for breakfast sandwiches, which are quite good. The Bad: Unfortunately, my overall experience has been marred by poor management and a lack of responsiveness to customer feedback. Despite the café's evident success, the issues I've encountered repeatedly go unresolved. Below are some notable incidents: 1) The Sandwich Saga: One visit, my girlfriend and I ordered a Green Goddess sandwich and a frittata. Her food arrived in 25 minutes, but my cold sandwich took 45 minutes after that. When we asked, the waitress blamed short staffing and assured us they were hiring more cooks. That was eight months ago, and nothing has improved. 2) Lost Orders & Customer Drama: During another visit with my girlfriend and her family, we placed our orders at the counter. Everyone received their food except me. After waiting 30 minutes, we were told they "didn't hear" my frittata order. Another 25 minutes later, it finally arrived. While waiting, we witnessed a customer angrily complain about the quality of his eggs. He made a scene, yelling at staff, and the police were eventually called. Looking for a pie to bring to my aunt's Thanksgiving dinner, I suggested Dutch Baby because I've always enjoyed their baked goods. Returning the pie was out of the question due to the 59-mile trip, but I felt completely ripped off. Final Thoughts: This café has so much potential but consistently fails to deliver. The Dutch Baby was so interesting. Even had a woman walking past stop and asked what it was because it looks so appealing. Everything was pretty good, but the poached egg was very over cooked (more like a hard boiled egg) and there was such a tiny amount of hollandaise that it might as well not even had any.
