Ate here three times in two days. Had lunch, then dinner and then breakfast. I was with a crowd of coworkers for each meal and everyone was very happy with their meals. I had the ultimate grilled cheese for lunch with soup. Both were awesome. For dinner I had the fish basket, it was okay, I wouldn't pick it again. For breakfast I had the stuffed french toast that is made from their cinnamon rolls. It was amazing. I had bread pudding which is made from the cinnamon rolls as well and it was good, I've had better. Now, I also stopped on the way out of town as did ally coworkers and we all bought multiple cinnamon rolls. These turned out to be the BEST cinnamon rolls I have ever had. I have had many cinnamon rolls from many places and these are amazing. And they are HUGE. read more

Gone downhill disappointment! We have given Hilltop several chances to improve. We used to order takeout almost every Friday. It started with their coleslaw. Awful like it is spoiled. Then cold potatoes, tasteless gravy or forgotten completely on the hot beef sandwich! Their dinner and cinnamon rolls are almost dough. Yuck! We have loved Hilltop for years. Last night was the last time until new owners and or cook. Everything we ordered was under cooked and soggy, fries that were white and soggy, fish, shrimp, doughy rolls again. The chicken and dumpling soup was white and tasteless! No visible dumpings could be distinguished. Is there no supervision or quality control? New owners are not cut out to run a restaurant and have given up. Ugh what a waste of a great restaurant. :( read more

We stopped at Hilltop Restaurant for lunch after visiting Canyon Falls. The portion sizes were very generous. The service was good and they friendly. The house made soup was hot and tasty. Hilltop is known for their gigantic cinnamon rolls so we wanted to try it. It's huge - glad we shared it! It was pretty good. I personally prefer a cream cheese frosting. The "icing" they used was too much and dripping off the plate. The next time I'm in the area I will probably stop for a meal but will probably pass on the cinnamon roll. read more

Most servers had masks but only 2/5 I saw wore them properly over mouth and nose and one wore here around her chin most of the time. Masking while not at your table seems to be optional for patrons. This business has undergone a somewhat recent change in ownership. The food is decent and diners will be impressed by the size of the cinnamon rolls. Waitstaff were pleasant. The owner was an a**. I spoke with him on the phone a few days later. My bill was incorrect. He asked me for my credit card information and I apologized for having trouble reading the faded numbers, as I'd just had eye surgery. He replied, " I don't want to hear about it," and went on to find things to snarl and be additionally rude and socially inappropriate about. Btw, I'm not some little old person who whines and overshares about health issues. The guy was just simply an a**. I wouldn't spend money there again. I'd go so far as to say Hilltop is THE restaurant for all of Baraga County. They have roadside signs promoting the world's largest cinnamon roll, and indeed it is enough to feed 2-3 people, or 1 person who wants a full day's caloric intake in a single sitting. Besides the famous rolls, they have a full menu of traditional sit-down restaurant fare. The steak-n-potato stuff, with salads, soups and such. Good sign for a restaurant is the number of old people dining there. Certainly applies to this place since the majority of diners I've seen are over 60. After a day on the Keweenaw Peninsula, come on back to L'anse and have dinner here. read more

Entirely deserving of all the rave reviews. I had the sausage gravy over eggs and potatoes; I asked for more gravy to enjoy it more fully. My companion had the Hilltopper with cinnamon swirl toast (as did I) and then surreptitiously bought a cinnamon roll the size of a loaf of banana bread. Food was good they were understaffed the waitresses were seating people and had full sections. I ordered the northerner and really enjoyed the sausage gravy they make for the biscuits and gravy. The hashbrowns were also yummy. We did not get a cinnamon roll there but they looked good so we bought two to bring home for our families. What happened to the cinnamon rolls? They used to be ooey-gooey with lots of cinnamon swirls. YUM. Worth the stop. We picked some up this week (Jan 2022) and they were nothing like that. As I'm sure you've noticed reading through the information on this restaurant, they have cinnamon rolls :) I just returned from dinner and they have a decent salad bar and very good soup. Rolls served with dinner are really good - better than even some of the fanciest restaurants I've been to. Cinnamon rolls look good and I'm heading back in the morning to try some "sweet roll french toast". All in all, this is a great place to try out. Their menu has plenty to offer, service is great, food is good, and there's big cinnamon rolls. You can't lose! read more

Really good food. They are known for their 1lb. Cinnamon Roll. It is huge...it fed five of us I had the shrimp basket. Most of the time when you get a shrimp basket they all taste the same ...this one the shrimp was awesome. Everybody at our table got a different thing and they all loved the food. We tried the famous sweet roll, it was yummy! We really didn't realize that it was a restaurant when we found it online. We just thought it was a bakery. We had a full breakfast and the pancake was delicious. They have huge cookies for sale and other baked goods at the register. We made a point of stopping at Hilltop when we were traveling in the area. My husband and our 16 year son are cinnamon roll fanatics. I heard about the sweet rolls via friends on Facebook. So we stopped in for lunch. Our lunch was so good and Miriam our waitress very friendly and helpful. My husband was too full from his lunch to try a sweet roll. So he got one to go. I ordered the homemade layered meatloaf for dinner. The homemade meatloaf patty sits on top a pile of mashed potatoes. Neither are really visible or recognizable because loaded on top is sauteed mushrooms, homemade gravy, shredded cheese and a mound of onion rings. The combination of all of those sounds like something I would create at home when I had a hankering for four different things and couldn't decide, so they all get put together. We stopped by this restaurant for lunch on our road trip from Oregon to the east coast. The ultimate grilled cheese sandwich was amazing - pulled pork, cheese, fried onions, with a little kick. Also had an excellent BLT on homemade bread. We didn't buy any of their enormous cinnamon rolls but one customer said they slice them and make French toast at home. The Hilltop is a very nice family restaurant with fresh, homemade food and cordial service. My family had a variety of soups, some items from a decent-sized salad bar, the French dip sandwich (very good!), fish and chips (good, but not spectacular) and enormous, fresh-baked dinner rolls. We purchased one cinnamon roll as big as my kids' heads for dessert later. The variety on the menu was surprising, considering the location and much of the food is made in-house, which is quite good. Positives first: food is awesome, atmosphere is nice and cozy, and our server was very nice. Negatives: the management is horrible. It took 20 mins to be seated and the restaurant was half full, there was a line out the door to be seated as well. Once seated it took about 2 hours to get the food. I've worked in food service before and the food came out hot so I know it was not the servers fault at all (again she was great!). Throughout this whole 2.5 hours we never saw a manager or owner until someone in our party asked for one. The owner came out and was extremely defensive and gave the typical excuse "we are busy"- that should be a good thing for your business not something that you complain about. My issues really come down to the fact that management handled this horribly, apparently they had several call ins and it was a holiday weekend so I get it that it's stressful. HOWEVER- the owner should not be the one hiding in the back they should be out serving tables or bussing or hosting, doing SOMETHING to help their staff. Our poor server was running around like crazy as were the other servers and the owners comment to us was "well what do you want me to do about it?" Well, as a start, you could help your staff out to avoid back ups in the future. Hopefully they change because I can't imagine it is a pleasant place for their employees to work. read more

The cinnamon rolls truly are as good as advertised. They are definitely big enough for 2-3 people. The staff is very friendly and helpful. A nice, clean restaurant. I was a bit disappointed with the fresh fruit. The waitress said it was all cut and placed in the fridge mixed together. It had a bit of a fruit cocktail taste. My daughter had the cinnamon roll French toast. It had a cream cheese filling. I think the plain cinnamon roll was the much better bet. read more

Hilltop Restaurant get's 5 stars from me for multiple reasons. I hope this review is able to assist whomever comes across it in making the decision to patronize this business when in the area. If your coming for breakfast, you will not leave hungry; that I assure you. Everything on their menu comes in very good proportions and is very reasonably priced. It is an older crowd but I can assure you that is for a reason. They give you a coffee pot filled at your own table that is insulated for you to keep it coming as much as you like. I am not sure about you, but I prefer to go to town at my own pace rather than having some poor waitress run back and forth on a crowded morning. I LOVE their American fries b/c they are huge and feel more substantive than the little ones you get at the greasy spoon diners. Their buffet is all you can eat and is always kept up with fresh food and sweet rolls if you are tempted. I personally eat 4 lbs of bacon and eggs with 4 cups of coffee and then roll out of there and immediately nap when I get home. For lunch and dinner the food is again, quite good. If you want to leave there super happy, make sure you get a dinner roll (or should I say a football of deliciousness). The roll is literally huge and they bring it to you piping hot with real whipped butter packets (unreal tasty). If your avoiding carbs, sorry this place is not for you. For dinner I love the chicken tenders and fries (delicious) or anything to do with a special. They make really good gravy and their meat is fresh. ( Little known secret; if you go here, ask for a container of BBQ to go. I don't know what they do but it is delicious... You will be thanking me later) All that with a bar that serves most domestics, wine and some liquor and you got yourself a winner in my book. Ton's of bakery to take home and sweetrolls the size of dump trucks to bring to your obese co-workers to gloat about. Beyond all that.. The owners are some of the best people I know and are super involved in the community. I assure you, the more this place is patronized the more they would give back if they could. They are involved in everything they can afford to do and it is extremely commendable (really, this is just above and beyond the food). They LOVE animals at this place so be sure to stop by the gift shop and check out some of their toys. They have donation boxes all over for the animal shelter and some sales of items go toward helping fund the no-kill shelter. read more
