Hilltown Hot Pies is the best pizza in the Berkshires, no questions asked. It may make some of the best cocktails in the Berkshires as well. The experience is great, though it is no longer a pop-up, so make a reservation if you can! If not you can do take out and sit at one of the picnic tables outside, they still served us which was so kind! Every pizza is truly stellar, the meatballs are sooooooo tasty, and the kale caesar is one of my favorite salads in the Berkshires. His family background really shines through in his new place. While in The Berkshire , my wife Bridget and I longed for a good pizza. Had a great meal there last week. Went with a party of six so we got to run the table on the appetizers. I loved the meatballs and the cheese-stuffed cabbage. First time here. We wanted to try the pies. We got a margarita and festa di funghi. Both were excellent and had that nice frank pepe char. We also split a salad which was big and delicious. Very busy restaurant, make reservations as the food was amazing. They feature artisanal sourdough pizza, but you shouldn't miss ordering the appetizers as they were all fantastic. The meatballs is a must and the marinara sauce was exceptional. A more unique dish were the cheese stuffed cabbage, definitely a dish we will have again. Try the pastas they were delicious and cooked perfectly. We ordered 4 pizzas each one seemed better than the last, hard to decide our favorite. We had to try the traditional toppings but the special pizzas were not only creative but the combinations were right on, including the Peachy Brother, peaches and blue cheese yum! The Cornucopia has roasted corn, mozzarella, confit of tomato and a sweet corn Pecorino cream! After all the food we had we thought of skipping dessert but had to see if the desserts were equal to the rest of the meal. If you like cannolis, ordered them, the shells are made in house and the filling is delicious. The blueberry crisp was a winner, packed with blueberries and the topping was fantastic. If you like butterscotch, try the Budino. I highly recommend you treat yourself and a loved one or two or more to a memorable meal leaving the cooking to Hilltown for an enjoyable evening. read more

This is where I wish Yelp allowed half stars. Hilltown is the epitome of a 4.5 spot. The space is beautiful and designed to feel upscale. The staff is friendly with just the right amount of fun banter, engaging without overdoing it. We tried two seasonal pizzas: the Levant, a Middle Eastern-themed pie with flavors reminiscent of a kofta kebab, and the Patata, a playful potato and leek number. The toppings on both were tasty and well-seasoned. So why not a 5? Because the most important part of pizza is the crust, and this was well-cooked with a nice undercarriage but almost zero flavor. Unless you count "clean" as a flavor profile. The consistency between the two pizzas was also wildly different. One was heavily charred, the other barely risen. The Levant's sauce needed to lean more tzatziki than herby to really tie the flavors together. And the mozzarella sticks had an oddly chunky herb crust. Maybe herby spice mixes just aren't their thing. Finally, the upscale atmosphere doesn't do Hilltown any favors. A more casual-hip vibe would make the friendly but occasionally distracted service easier to overlook. Maybe the upscale feel is meant to justify the higher prices, but I think the quality of the ingredients, with a little more consistency, would let the pizza rise on its own. read more

Great spot for dinner before a show! Our server was hilarious and very good about checking in and replenishing drinks and silverware. We tried the meatballs and carrots as apps and then ordered 3 pizzas to share. The meatballs were tender and tasty but we felt the sauce was a little off - still very enjoyable though! The pizza dough was perfectly crispy & chewy and we ate almost every last piece! It was quite busy in there and the vibe is a bustling, loud restaurant - which was great for our group sharing wine and laughing/talking without feeling we were disturbing people. Our party of six dined here last night and spent several hundred dollars on appetizers, entrees, desserts, coffee, wine, and after-dinner drinks. The food was good, and our waitress, Kadrianna, was outstanding--friendly, attentive, and professional. Unfortunately, management completely ruined the experience. While some of us were still finishing dessert and coffee, and after I had just ordered an after-dinner drink, a man walked by and abruptly told us we had to leave. There was no introduction, no "thank you," no explanation, and no apology. We hadn't even received our check. I later learned this man was the manager, JC. When one of the women in our party tried to speak with him, he was rude, dismissive, and condescending. I asked why another table that had been there longer wasn't being asked to leave, and he responded with a snarky remark about his "operating procedure." I then spoke with a woman who appeared to be in management and who was courteous and professional. Before I could finish explaining what had happened, another man interrupted, identified himself as the owner, and accused me of yelling at his girlfriend. I wasn't yelling. In a busy restaurant, you have to raise your voice simply to be heard. Rather than listening to a legitimate customer concern, he dismissed it. I understand that restaurants need to turn tables. That's part of the business. What isn't part of good business is treating paying customers as though they're an inconvenience. A polite explanation or a simple request would have accomplished far more than an order to leave. Management should understand that every customer has a voice. One negative experience is shared with family, friends, coworkers, and, increasingly, thousands of potential customers through online reviews. People often check reviews before deciding where to spend their money, and a reputation for rude, disrespectful management can drive away far more business than one table is worth. Hospitality isn't just about serving food--it's about making guests want to return. It's unfortunate because the staff earned our business, but management lost it. None of the six people in our party will be back, and I cannot recommend a restaurant where customer service ends the moment you've finished eating. read more

Hilltown Hot Pies is a welcome addition to The Berkshires, located in Egremont. It's an upscale pizza restaurant, and the pizza, pasta, and salads are excellent. Unfortunately, reservations are very difficult to obtain, and on each of our last three visits, they had run out of their much-touted wood-fired meatballs. Once might be understandable, but three times is a recurring problem--and very disappointing, especially when the meatballs are promoted as a specialty. We live nearby and want this restaurant to succeed. We hope management fixes the inventory issue so customers can enjoy the full menu. read more

As we were finishing ordering, the guy at the counter said "by the way that'll be an hour, is that ok?" We asked how many orders he said are before and he said "a lot." Hilltown hot pies has been heavily advertised on social media throughout the summer with instagram food blogger types posting about it, and while I am happy there is no shortage of customers, the pizza oven can only handle a few pies at a time and can't keep up with the hype generated. When I began to see how heavily this place was being pumped up at the beginning of the summer, bells went off in my mind signaling this sort of frenzied growth might be unsustainable. We were joking around as the hour progressed and a man fell asleep on the bench next to where we were sitting that there was an almost Fyre Fesitval lite vibe in the air. The pizza was good but overpriced. It is still a really nice experience but there is something a bit manic and unstable feeling about the whole operation. We wanted to love this place. The parking lot is jammed and people seem to be really enjoying themselves sitting in the lovely garden out back. They are cooking pizzas as fast as they can but be prepared to wait a while -20-30 minutes after you order. The selections are good and the salads fresh. $27 for a smallish pizza ? Ok. But the top was over charred and the bottom undercooked. We were so sad. Hopefully when the restaurant itself opens it will be better. read more

Started with a great cocktail, followed by a seasonal salad which set the stage for a stunning Neapolitan Pizza that was soooo damn good! Contrary to what Hilltown's Yelp page says, they are indeed open. We visited recently, excited that they serve wood-fired gluten-free pizza. The plusses are: the staff is outgoing and friendly and the restaurant is in a very scenic setting surrounded by leafy trees. The minuses: the food expensive and not as great as it could be. I don't mind a char on a wood-fired pizza (that's actually the point) but the edges on our pizza verged on incineration and the middle was mushy. We went at a time they weren't all that busy, so getting the texture so wrong is mystifying. Also, the cheese was very sparse and it was mostly like eating a zucchini-topped flatbread. We'd heard good buzz in the local papers about this place and were lured by the appealing photos. The eatery is set on a bucolic strip of verdant land shared with an inn and a small farm brimming with roosters, geese, goats, and a few cattle. It's a self-serve type of deal and after placing our order, we eagerly awaited the mastery we'd read about. Unfortunately, I can't say we were wowed. After reading Ruth Reichl's raves about Hilltown's wood-fired meatballs, we were stunned that they were served nearly cold - the frigid dollop of ricotta didn't help - but the meatballs themselves were barely warm, a major disappointment. The fried mozzarella was very good quality and oozy, but the (rock hard) breading overwhelmed the cheese, which should have been more of a stand-out. Hilltown's fried mozz would have been so much more palatable with a light, non-rocky bread or flour coating. The pizza was a sourdough crust, wood-fired with excellent-quality toppings of soppressata, fresh basil, and cheese. The downside is, they are very stingy with the toppings and you're basically getting a great big ol' piece of wood-fired focaccia. The flavors, though, were excellent. My complaint is, everything seemed to shift towards the center of the pizza in te baking process. The bottom of the pie towards the center was paper thin and soggy, which the edges had a beautiful char on them. I understand wood-fired pizzas are a fast-bake, but it doesn't seem like the pie was monitored and shifted during the baking process. The staff was very friendly and the setting beautiful, but at the prices they are charging for food, we felt as though we did not get a fair deal. The bill for 2 pizzas, 2 orders of 3 golf-ball-sized meatballs, and 1 order of fried mozzarella was $127, which included tip. No drinks. read more

The first time I came here during Labior Day weekend, I couldn't get in. The parking lot was packed and the side road was parked all the way down the road on both sides. It had recently opened and first major holiday weekend. I decided to come back another time. I am up visiting the area this weekend in a dreary wet weekend. On a whim I decided to check it out tonight. It was easy parking. They have the oven and staff outdoors to take your order and bake the pizza. Then you find a seat. Rainy cool day needs to be seated inside. They then bring your order to your table. I ordered the Caesar salad and cucumber/carrot with ranch dip. We shared a menzalune with burrata mozzarella. The eggplant was tender and the cheese was creamy yet cheesy. The inside had plenty of seats but still signs of the prior restaurant set up. So, I understood they will be doing renovations. We were lucky this is the last weekend for the season. So, I'm looking forward to next year. read more

After spending the first 2 weeks of July in Naples and the Amalfi coast, I was a little skeptical about having pizza so soon after eating the best. The key things I learned was that it wasn't the water but the freshest ingredients from as local a farm you can get combined with people who know what they're doing.
