    First time here. We wanted to try the pies. We got a margarita and festa di funghi. Both were excellent and had that nice frank pepe char. We also split a salad which was big and delicious. The service was good. Only problem was the sun was coming through the window into my eyes but they finally moved us to a different table. This is definitely a place to check out.

    The mozzarella cheese sticks cheese pull was on point!

    So good!! Pizzas were delicious and the mozzarella sticks are the best we've ever had. Service was perfect with very friendly servers. Cozy feels inside. Will definitely return.

    As we were finishing ordering, the guy at the counter said "by the way that'll be an hour, is that ok?" We asked how many orders he said are before and he said "a lot." Hilltown hot pies has been heavily advertised on social media throughout the summer with instagram food blogger types posting about it, and while I am happy there is no shortage of customers, the pizza oven can only handle a few pies at a time and can't keep up with the hype generated. When I began to see how heavily this place was being pumped up at the beginning of the summer, bells went off in my mind signaling this sort of frenzied growth might be unsustainable. We were joking around as the hour progressed and a man fell asleep on the bench next to where we were sitting that there was an almost Fyre Fesitval lite vibe in the air. The pizza was good but overpriced. It is still a really nice experience but there is something a bit manic and unstable feeling about the whole operation. Hopefully the new space will allow for a more settled operation.

    Just got in with one of the last open reservations for their opening night. Best pizza I have ever had. The cornbread tiramisu was really lovely too. Also, a great and welcoming vibe, as well as amazing wines and service. This place is stellar!

    Delicious food, ambiance, and service! Highly recommend the mozzarella fritti and the meatballs. So excited to come back!

    Gluten-free pizza, overly charred on the edges.

    Contrary to what Hilltown's Yelp page says, they are indeed open. We visited recently, excited that they serve wood-fired gluten-free pizza. The plusses are: the staff is outgoing and friendly and the restaurant is in a very scenic setting surrounded by leafy trees. The minuses: the food expensive and not as great as it could be. I don't mind a char on a wood-fired pizza (that's actually the point) but the edges on our pizza verged on incineration and the middle was mushy. We went at a time they weren't all that busy, so getting the texture so wrong is mystifying. Also, the cheese was very sparse and it was mostly like eating a zucchini-topped flatbread. The cheese sticks were good, but overwhelmed by a too-thick coating of very coarse bread crumbs.

    We'd heard good buzz in the local papers about this place and were lured by the appealing photos. The eatery is set on a bucolic strip of verdant land shared with an inn and a small farm brimming with roosters, geese, goats, and a few cattle. It's a self-serve type of deal and after placing our order, we eagerly awaited the mastery we'd read about. Unfortunately, I can't say we were wowed. After reading Ruth Reichl's raves about Hilltown's wood-fired meatballs, we were stunned that they were served nearly cold - the frigid dollop of ricotta didn't help - but the meatballs themselves were barely warm, a major disappointment. The fried mozzarella was very good quality and oozy, but the (rock hard) breading overwhelmed the cheese, which should have been more of a stand-out. Hilltown's fried mozz would have been so much more palatable with a light, non-rocky bread or flour coating. The pizza was a sourdough crust, wood-fired with excellent-quality toppings of soppressata, fresh basil, and cheese. The downside is, they are very stingy with the toppings and you're basically getting a great big ol' piece of wood-fired focaccia. The flavors, though, were excellent. My complaint is, everything seemed to shift towards the center of the pizza in te baking process. The bottom of the pie towards the center was paper thin and soggy, which the edges had a beautiful char on them. I understand wood-fired pizzas are a fast-bake, but it doesn't seem like the pie was monitored and shifted during the baking process. The staff was very friendly and the setting beautiful, but at the prices they are charging for food, we felt as though we did not get a fair deal. The bill for 2 pizzas, 2 orders of 3 golf-ball-sized meatballs, and 1 order of fried mozzarella was $127, which included tip. No drinks.

    A Community Venue Changed…read more The Egremont Barn, now operating as Buttonball Barn, was once a cornerstone of local music and community gathering. Because of our long-standing connection to the space, my husband and I chose it for our wedding celebration, placing our deposit with the previous owners, who were professional and supportive throughout the process. After the property changed ownership, we still proceeded with our event in October. This celebration held particular significance, as my father was seriously ill at the time, and we were grateful he was able to attend. Unfortunately, our experience with the new ownership raised serious concerns about professionalism, transparency, and respect for both clients and staff. On the day of the event, the owner attempted to impose additional charges not outlined in our contract. This included a demand for a $500 fee for using a room to get ready--a space she had explicitly told me I could use earlier in the day, noting it was acceptable despite the building being under construction. While I was getting ready, she entered the room while my mother and a family friend were assisting me and removed a rug from beneath them, stating that I "wasn't supposed to use the room all day." I chose not to address this at the time in order to preserve the tone of the day. Throughout the event, the owner was also openly drinking at the open bar, which had been paid for by my father. As the night concluded, she insisted that I personally break down the entire venue either immediately or first thing the following morning--despite knowing I had family visiting--or I would be charged for a cleaning crew. This expectation had not been communicated beforehand and was not included in the contract. When I suggested discussing it the next day, she continued to press the issue and confronted my husband, who attempted to redirect the conversation. To avoid further escalation, my friends and I cleaned the venue that night--while I was still in my wedding dress. She later stated that she would retain space heaters I had purchased in exchange for waiving the disputed room fee. When I noted that none of these charges or arrangements were contractually agreed upon, she responded, "I'm expensive, and I'm not in the contract either, honey," in reference to her being casted on The Real Housewives of New York City. Additionally, her conduct toward long-standing staff members--many of whom had supported the venue for years--was concerning and contributed to an atmosphere that felt transactional rather than community-centered. Some of those staff members have since left the venue. What was most troubling was the timing and context. The attempts to extract additional money occurred at the end of a wedding celebration involving a seriously ill parent, placing unnecessary stress on a family during an already significant moment. The Egremont Barn once represented collaboration, music, and mutual respect. Under its current ownership, that spirit appears to have shifted toward aesthetics and revenue at the expense of community and care. I encourage readers to proceed with caution, ask detailed questions, and ensure all expectations are clearly documented in writing before booking events there.

Super helpful, creative eye and always available for advice. The rooms were so beautifully decorated. All set with the cutest fridge and snack station with everything you'd ever want. The bathroom was super well lit and also decorated so uniquely. The Alander is located in the center of a ton of activities and super close to the Berkshires. Also a lot of great hikes available. They also have a gorgeous firepit that we took advantage of at night. Not to mention their restaurant - The North Star. Delicious and convenient. I would absolutely stay here again and have already brought it up to family. Put The Alander on your list!

For check in, they send you a code to use on the electronic key pad. We had booked two rooms. Got code for one room. Tried to call them as there is no reception, got VM. There was a message that AFTER you enter the room there is a phone number to call so we did call from the one room we could access and it went to the same VM. We waited till there was someone at the restaurant and she was able to call the mystery people from this hotel and get our second room code. The bathtub was filthy. The ceiling had spots. See photos. This is not a boutique hotel. It is less than motel 6.

Both were served with hashed potatoes and a choice of bacon, sausage, or fruit. My Crab Avocado Toast was great, I mean really great. It has a big scoop of shredded crab salad, a lot of avocado slices, thin sliced radishes to add some crunch, very good hash browns, and 2 slices of thick crisp bacon. It was worth every penny of that $20 bill. Our server Madeline was a delight, and we had a lot of fun joking around with her as we all speculated on why a neighboring table looked at the menu and then walked out. I highly recommend Elm for you to try in your next visit to Great Barrington.
