Quality/Quantity - This brand was the HIT when I was a "kid;" sadly it has dropped and has not been able to keep up or change with the times/competition. Really caters to tourists, not in a bad way. Free shuttles to and from Hilo Hattie, this is how they usually get you. I had no schedule today, so it worked out for us and we hopped on. And almost bought some very expensive local peanut butter for my daughter, $17 a jar. Her favorite local peanut butter. Not sure if I posted a picture. Atmosphere - Tiny location, at/in the bottom of the mall. What a far fall from their original huge warehouse locations in the past. Free wifi. Plenty of mall parking, but with a free shuttle, NA. Clearance items at very reasonable prices. Service - Excellent, great friendly service. Free shuttles, don't forget to tip. Local and military discounts. Price - Free + generous tip. Hilo Hattie in the Ala Moana Mall is clean and not very crowded. They have a big collection of Men's Hawaiian shirts that are different from the ABC stores. My kids love Hawaiian Shirts. But there's so many, it's hard to pick one. I found someone nice enough to help me with my pictures. The price ranges from just over $100 to $34 and very few are 50% off of higher prices. The style and materials used makes a difference. They also have a selection of souvenirs too. read more

4.5 stars! Our hula girl dash was broken! When you are in Hawaii you ain't driving without it or else, your driver will be bored! We've passed this store a hundred times and finally we were able to pay a visit & check on what's inside they offer. And of course, we are in hunt for our hula girl for the dashboard. Just like other local gift shops they offer tons of souvenirs & some local delicacies. And lots of turtle stuffs in here too. So kawaii! As usual, my heart is filled with delightedness as I scan most of the items they offer in here. Their garments are on sale & some other stuffs. Customer service is by far great. The staffs greeted us the moment we entered the store. They were friendly & helpful at the same time. And since pandemic, hand sanitizer is available at the front door & at the counter. Face mask must be strictly worn. Lucky us coz they got no other customers except us! That is why we both have each of our time to check the souvenirs in almost every rack. End up buying a ceramic bowl, Hula girl, sweets, earrings & a wooden ladle. And of course, they offer Kama'aina discount and that's a plus for us. Upon exiting the store we notice this necklace that made out from tiny seashells. My bandit loves it so he got one & the moment he was about to heads up back to the counter, this saleswoman stop him telling us that it is free & that we can pick one. Cha-ching!!!! And we leave the store happily satisfied. We will surely consider this local store to pick some souvenirs when we decided to send care package for my family to the Philippines. During our recent visit to Ala Moana Center in search of a traditional Hawaiian or Hawaiian-inspired baby shower gift, we strolled into Hilo Hattie. This visit was shortly AFTER we had purchased a traditional Hawaiian quilt and we thought of adding a little cute "something" before sending the gift off. As a local, this was the first time I've ever stepped foot into this store as I've always regarded this business as a store for inexpensive Hawaiian apparel, souvenirs or inexpensive trinkets but, I figured why not take a look? As we walked in, there were several tourists shopping and the sales women took the time to greet us with smiles and Aloha. I felt that this store was bulging at its seams with racks and shelves of Hawaiian wear and souvenirs. So rather than weave our way through, I just asked to see what they offer in the way of infants. Sorry, I didn't get the saleswoman's name but she was super patient and friendly. She brought out several outfit styles and suggested dress sizes for this yet unborn baby girl for whom we were shopping. My dread of shopping was starting to materialize as she brought out more colors and patterns of the cute infant outfits. Good grief...my mind was spinning with so many choices (although, having many choices can be a good thing). I had to distract myself from looking at infant outfits and looked at HH's selection of totes or diaper bags. Um, that distraction sort of helped me to refocus on the task at hand. Well, I finally made a decision and even got a Kamaāina discount after presenting my local ID. A sad small echo of what was once the best and only place to shop for Local work and dress up clothes, i.e. Aloha Shirts. Last I was here, the main shop was a part of the factory where the best Hawai'ian clothing was made by Americans. The current fashionable patterns were full price, last year's shirts were on sale, all were made and sold with pride by Locals. Dressing up here, Local Style, means men wear a nice newer Aloha shirt (rayon, puka shell buttons) with dark color dress slacks and good shoes. Not shorts, not flip flops, not unbuttoned (even if you do have great abdominal muscles and fancy tattoos). This little shop in Ala Moana shopping center is all that remains of this great tradition, but still a must stop for the quintessential Hawai'i visit, your souvenir Aloha shirt. Don't buy one of those cheap Chinese tourist shirts, they are low quality. You can still find the Local pride in this shop, and these remain the best Aloha shirts. Don't forget to get a little Hula Girl for your dashboard. read more

Hilo Hattie has a special place in my heart. I've bought stuff from there as far back as I remember. There used to be free shuttles between their stores and the airport and other tourist hubs. It's been through tough times and now, it's a small sliver of its former self. I'm glad that this one still exists. It's a great place to get your Hawaiiana tchotchkes, aloha shirts, and macadamia gifts here. The shirts are much better quality than a lot of the other tourist stores. The staff here is extra nice. One of the best sales lady on the island works here. She helped me pick out a great shirt on this visit. I'll be back! read more

Like the fact Hilo Hattie offers a solid selection of aloha wear in sizes from baby to XXXL & more- better still, made in Hawaii not elsewhere. Bought a bunch of shirts and muumuus today to bring back to family stateside. I visit Hawaii every couple of years; I still have some aloha shirts and muumuus I bought 10-20 years ago from Hilo Hatties at the old location. Ok I don't wear them all the time, but my point is what I picked up in the past was well made, I still wear (weather permitting). Had friends visiting and one wanted to get some Hawaiian clothes. I went to the Hilo Hattie's on Nimitz and it is closed so had to go on to the Ala Moana store. The Nimitz store was huge and this one...not so much. The store is hard to find in the mall and tiny! Not much for selection and I couldn't find any any cheap print dresses to wear around the house. The prices were ok and the salespeople seemed ok but it just didn't have the casual ambiance of Hilo Hattie's (love the Maui store for this!) I love Mark A.'s comment that this isn't any better than an ABC Store because that's exactly what it seems like-but without snacks to pass the time. I still like Hilo Hattie's and will I'm sure return the next time I have visitors but not in love with the Ala Moana store. read more

Hilo Hattie is a must stop for gifts. Before you shop here, pick up one of those tourist books and you can usually find a coupon in there. Last time when I went, I had a coupon for a free sarong when you spend at least $15. I usually stop here because I love their $1 calendars. There are always beautiful pictures in them and for $1, how could you pass that up? If you like deals, make sure you walk around the store because there are deals all over the place. read more

The Walmart of Hawaiian goods. Everything you can imagine as a souvenir is here and then some. They even had shuttles to ferry in folks from who knows where. I must admit I was hoping to find someplace like this because I wanted a Hawaiian shirt to take home and I found a great one. Found my hula girl for my dash to remind me of a great trip. Hilo Hattie use to be THE store in Hawaii to get all of your typical souvenirs. They had stores everywhere and they were generally massive in selection. Over the last several years it seems that they're dying a slow death with only a handful of stores left. This location in particular is pretty small. My wife and I took a swing through the store. We sent shopping at the Ala Moana mall to do more souvenirs shopping. Our main target destination was Hilo Hattie. We had already shopped and spent too much money at the other stores on Kauai and Hilo. These two store had super friendly and helpful staff. THIS location however is run by the most non-helpful and rude staff you could ever meet. When asking about sizes of shirts, the sales lady got very aggressively annoyed and told that she would look in the back for my size "If she had to". Upon checking out we got our free coffee mugs. My wife wanted the patterns to match the other free mugs we had gotten at the other Hilo Hattie's. The manager "Roy?" Told my she would have to take what he gave her even though the patterns she wanted were sitting right there. Bottom line is this particular location is staffed by unpleasant people that do not care about customer satisfaction. By the way, we spent $350.00 in this location. They got our money, but we won't be going back. read more

Really disappointed with the store. Hilo Hattie was THE place stop for souvenirs. Now its a tiny crammed full store on the lower level of a shopping mall. Products are even more over priced than they were years back but quality doesn't seem as good. Save yourself the trouble and go to the Aloha bowl farmers market for those take home items. read more

Shopping at a Hilo Hattie's while visiting Hawaii is a must do! Unfortunately the experience my family and I had at the Hilo Hattie's in the Ala Moana center was horrible. This was not our first time at this store. We visit every year during our vacation, but it was our first encounter with all of the staff making us feel uncomfortable and as if we were going to steal everything we touched. The way the women followed our family around the store was completely insulting. One lady followed me the entire time, so I decided to take my diaper bag off of my shoulder and ask my husband to hold it so the lady would stop following me; unfortunately this didn't help as I still had a stroller that she probably felt I would stash items in it. To the Hilo Hattie's staff: When a customer knows you are following them and clearly announces they do not appreciate every movement being followed, then back off! We understand you may deal with high volumes of theft, but there are more professional ways of monitoring theft in your store: greet the customer, ask if they need help, and monitor from a distance. If the customer is not acting suspiciously then leave them alone. After the treatment my family and I experienced we will not be returning to this store. read more

It has been many years since going into a Hilo Hattie's. The last was at a large store on Maui. I was quite surprised to see such a small shop at the Ala Moana Shopping Center. In spite of size, it had just what I wanted, a 100% cotton Hawaiian print dress for my almost four year old granddaughter. I loved the pink color with white/yellow plumeria. The sales ladies were so helpful and polite. I also purchased a cute book for the two year old grandson called Goodnight Shark and a pair of pink plumeria earrings for myself. This place is located in the ground floor of Ala Moana center. As soon as an employee sees you, they will automatically place a bead necklace around your neck. Then, as you walk around, you will see employees following you around, thinking that you will steal something. Originally, I wasn't planning to purchase anything because it's basically a smaller version of an ABC store, minus the hot/cold food. Since our family of 4, each received a bead necklace (not by choice), my husband felt guilty just walking out. We ended up purchasing 2 items and left. If we had a choice, we would most likely not buy anything because the prices here are slightly higher than their competitor. read more

I first went to Hilo Hattie's in 2007 to their store on Nimitz Highway. I tried to go back this year, only to find that store has closed permanently, much to my disappointment. So I had so settle for the one at Ala Moana Mall, the key word there being settle. Sadly, this store is much smaller, and is only a shell of what the other one was. I used to consider it the must-visit store for Hawaiian souvenirs and clothes, and other things. Sadly, not only is it not that anymore, but I can't honestly say it's any better than the ABC stores found all over the place in Waikiki Beach. Yeah, the ambience is better, but given the fact tourists have to drive to the mall as opposed to just walking to one of the ABC stores, some of which have a better selection, I'd prefer to just go to the ABC stores. It's sad to see how far Hilo Hattie's has fallen. I might visit stores on other islands, but I see no reason to return to this one. Just so we're clear, it's not a bad store, it's perfectly fine, it's just that they don't have stuff you can't get elsewhere, their selection is on the smallish side, and their prices are nothing to write home about. We always drop by Hilo Hattie when we're in the islands. We've bought some cool things here over the years. Usually it includes a dress for My Lady. Last time it was an English-Hawaiian dictionary. This time, nothing. The after-Christmas sale featured shirts that were apparently cut for six-foot 130-pound men. Back at the condo, I discovered that none of my shirts are from Hilo Hattie. Hilo Hattie's is one of the premiere destinations for tourists to visit and look for something to take home. Yes, there also was an actual person named "Hilo Hattie." You'll have to visit their website to get the story on that. Their Aloha Shirts are sometimes your "stereotypical" type designs. Some are "interesting" and some fall into the classic type patterns. They also have matching dresses and shirts, if that's something you're looking for. They are fairly inexpensive also, sometimes ones on sale can get down to around $20-$25. What's nice about Hilo Hattie is that they help perpetuate "Aloha" by presenting you with a free shell lei upon entering. Not only do they sell apparel, but they have all kinds of jewelry, trinkets, and doodads for the keepsake hunter. They always have coupons or something going for visitors (so check those tourist magazines) and also have a kama'aina discount for locals if you show them your ID. This location is on the beach side, towards the Sears end of the mall. Parking is usually pretty plentiful. read more

I stopped by here to pick up an order I had placed with the Maui Dive Pearl Company, which has a counter located inside Hilo Hatties. So my review is based on walking through the store to get to the pearl counter. :) It is a very nice location and filled to the brim with every kind of island art, clothing, and tchotchke. Hilo Hattie has ads everywhere but it is surprisingly a classy tourist souvenir store, very clean and bright- definitely a step up from the ABC Store (which I also adore). The location is not walkable from Waikiki, but there are free shuttles or you can drive like we did. We recommend getting the Hilo Hattie brand premium choc mac nuts (really tasty, better than the other brands, and 100% made in Hawaii). My husband also got a tasteful Hawaiian shirt that was 100% cotton, which I feel safer around than a highly flammable version in rayon or polyester. The prices weren't way out of line of competitors, the mac nuts were slightly more expensive but the shirt was slightly cheaper. There are lots of coupons out there for gifts with purchase, so make sure you pick one up. read more

On my first visit to Honolulu friend kept recommending a visit to Hilo Hattie. A short, free, shuttle ride from Waikiki got me to the store where I was given a shell necklace and offered a tour of the store. After spending a few hours picking out candy and aloha shirts, I was ready to checkout. I had been told to present my flight ticket stub for a discount, but the cashier politely explained that I could not combine the sale price with that discount and they were on sale for even more off. Then she proceeded to add three boxes of chocolate to my order for free to make it up to me. When I got back to the hotel, I noticed a double charge for one of the boxes of chocolates I had purchased, I called the manager, expecting to be told to head back to the store (would not have been worth it for $10) but he informed me he could reverse the charge with just the receipt number and thanked me for visiting. The quality of the shirts I got was very high, the chocolate addicting, the prices very reasonable (from outright cheap on the cotton shirts, to silk shirts priced very competitively) I am definitely heading back to Hilo Hattie on my next visit to the islands. read more
