It's easy to overlook Himalayan Heritage in Adams Morgan from the outside. But, right when you enter you can feel the welcoming atmosphere with the incense and traditional decor. Having been to many Indian restaurants, I was intrigued by the vegetable momos, which were great! The gobi manchurian were very crisp and were seasoned perfectly. But the highlight was the garlic naan, which was fresh off the tandoor. The wait time was a little on the longer side, but it really tasted like everything was freshly made to order! Himalayan Heritage is overall very solid. I ordered the vegetable korma to go and enjoyed my meal. I also ordered the veggie samosas which I really enjoyed. It is a bit pricey for an order, but they are pretty big and 2 come in an order. I'd say this place is closer to a 3.5 to be honest. read more

Before participating, I made a call to inquire how the Salmon Tikka Fillet was prepared & my taste buds started salivating. Yogurt & Coconut Milk are the only "creamy" base used accordingly. The menu is extensive offering Nepalese, in addition to the regular Tandoori, Biryani, Lamb & Poultry dishes. The Vegetarian options are plentiful with 10+ selections. Order delivery from this place about three times a month - one of my favorites especially as the weather gets cold. I studied abroad in Nepal and India and this feels like the most authentic representation of the cuisine I've had outside Kathmandu. The momo are delicious, the palak paneer and chicken tikka are so flavorful, and it's one of the few places I can find reliably good goat. Deliveries always arrive with the right accoutrements and they don't really gouge on any of the services, near as I can tell. read more

wow what a great little find! I have passed this place 100 times and never noticed it, its located above muzette on 18th st. If you want to explore a world of Nepalese / Indian food with a couple Indo-chinese stand outs, this is your place, the momo's (and they have several kinds, in a jhol / soup sauce, steamed, pan fried, chicken, veggie, goat) are amazing, the chili paneer was delicious (the chili chicken didnt do it for me, which is a bummer b/c its one of my fav indo-chinese things to eat) and the nepalese curry was delicious (although maybe a bit cardomom heavy). We were visiting DC for a two day trip and decided to stop here for lunch. Few of us are huge fans of 'Momos', so we were excited to try them in an authentic Nepalese place. We ordered 3 different kinds of Momos (Khothey, Jhol and one more) and they certainly didn't disappoint. The Khotheys were meaty, flavorful and juicy. Main course was great too, loved the goat curry. We had a pretty bad experience the first time we ate here but decided to come back to give it a second chance. That was a big mistake. We ordered two glasses of wine to start. The wine had gone rancid (this happened on our first visit too). Obviously the wine bottle had been opened and exposed to air for a LONG time. They took them back and we ordered beer instead (safe option). We ordered two appetizers which arrived 45 minutes later. They were very good. After sitting there for an hour waiting for someone to take our dinner order, we gave up and just asked for the check. They charged us for the expired wine. After another 20 minutes, they corrected it and we finally left. 1 hour and 25 minutes and all we had was rancid wine, a beer, two apps, and no dinner because they never asked. The annoying thing about all of this is that this place serves great food! It's clear they're short-staffed but the staff seems completely clueless about how to operate a restaurant. If you're so short-staffed, then don't seat so many parties at once! read more

I live in the area and walk by this place all the time and had always planned to try it. One day we decided to venture in and I'm so glad I did. I wasn't quite sure what Himalayan cuisine consisted of but I was surprised to see so many familiar items on the menu. I ended up going with the butter chicken which is served with rice. Let Me just say that it was so good. The chicken was cooked well and the sauce was flavorful. The interior lighting is a bit dim but it creates a nice little vibe especially if you're trying to chill out a bit. Ordered the Vegan Mo:Mo, which I found to be the best dish. Also had Naan Basket for the kids and a bowl of Lentil Soup. The Lentil Soup was really disappointing. The tasting notes hinted at Oatmeal...seriously. I had my wife try it, too, and she agree: it tasted of oatmeal. The kids loved the Naan Basket, although it took FOREVER to get. They wouldn't substitute Butter Naan for the Plain Naan in the basket, even though both are the same price on the menu...weird. The Vegan Mo:Mo was the star dish. The dish is basically a steamed dumpling. The filling was reminiscent of traditional Indian Samosa filling, but was delightful in a soft wrap. 3.5. This is a nice place to go in Adams Morgan if you are looking for a business casual environment or just some low key but classic dining. We had a work dinner here which included folks from Tanzania and Mozambique. A group of 20. It is difficult to find a good place to eat in Adams Morgan that can take a party of 20...especially as a walk-in. I think it was very accommodating of the establishment to fit us all in. Tanzanian food is spiceless (unlike West Africa). So our Tanzanian guests were hesitant to eat Indian food. The Moz guests were the exact opposite and wanted to bring on the heat. The Himalayan was a great choice for both groups as they accommodated the below mild folks as well as the spice folks. Both groups thought the food was delicious. I am a spice lover. This is my reason for the mediocre review. I ordered the CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA at very very spicy. It was very good, but it was more sweet than spice. The sweetness wasn't overpowering. I still liked it. The meat was very tender. But I personally like more heat in my food. I had to add some black pepper to bring out more of the heat. Additionally, the rice is shared between two people. So if you order 2 entrees, you get 1 thing of rice. I will tell you, it is not enough to share between two people compared to the amount of the entree you receive. I would come back here again because it has a nice ambiance, accommodating service, and the meat is nice and tender. read more

#3 best restaurant with a Clinton photo. This is like Indian food but slightly lighter. Because it's from the Himalayas where gravity is lower and therefore the food is a bit lighter technically. There is a place I prefer to order Indian food from in Gaithersburg, but I live in DC and Curry Place is incapable of correctly executing their orders. Doesn't matter because every dish is delicious. Regardless, as a DC transplant this is my favorite spot to date for Indian. Their Rogan Gosh was the best Ive had and their Tibetan curry dumplings create gravitational anxiety . I recommend eating next to the Clinton photo. This place is on my top ten best Clinton restaurants in DC. Not because I like Bill but because Bill likes food. This place is really awesome! The service was excellent and the server was super attentive. The atmosphere is great with its low music, Wall decors and dim lights. The food is great too, however, we asked for spicy and they made it extremely spicy so be careful on that! But the quality and the freshness was on point. I found that the servings are kind of small in comparison to many other south Asian cuisine. I ordered the Himalayan karahi, steamed chicken momo, land dish with side of rice and garlic naan. It had options for everyone-- strict vegetarians, meat lovers, and even those who are not the biggest Indian food fans. The service was great and the food came out really quickly. Okay. This review is going to be thorough because I'm a real live Nepali, so my opinion matters. Listen up. For those reviewing for Indian food, here's the deal. If you want Indian food it would be best to go to a place that specializes in Indian. Although most Nepali restaurants have an Indian section on the menu, it usually doesn't live up to the standards of top notch Indian cuisine. This restaurant is owned and run by three Nepalies. Coming to a Nepali restaurant and choosing NOT to enjoy the Nepali dishes is serious blasphemy. The atmosphere and decor is the best I've seen in a Nepali restaurant. You can immediately tell that the owners are proud of their heritage. I love the lighting and lanterns, the jhyals, the Buddhist thankas and the beautiful mural in the back. There's lots of detail in the decor and it's well appreciated. It was a delight to start off our meal with the perfectly portioned plate of sadeko bhatmas (spiced edamame) and puffed rice; flavor was killer. I'd say it was better than my mom's (don't tell her). Although, I'm not a fan of mustard oil they used a touch and it was enough, really salty, lots of fresh chunks of garlic - just the way I like it. Awesome. It was the beginning of Dashain, so we went all out - started off with a plate of chicken momos. Not impressive. These momos were a little bland - definitely lacking in spices in the meat and average on the juicy scale. Alongside the momos, we had chicken chilli. I've never had chicken chilli prepared like this. It was really red in color, but the style was more Chinese/Indian fusion than true Nepali. For our main course, we had the dal, bhat, tarkari (of course!) Had to have khasi (goat meat) It came with aloo ko achar (spiced potato salad), goat, rice, I think mustard greens. There was no mula ko achar (pickled radish) which was kind of a disappointment, and the tomato achaar/chutney was the same one used for the momos. Although the johl (gravy/soup) for khasi was good, it was under cooked, and too tough to eat, not nearly as tender as it should be. So overall, the food here is a 3/5; it's decent especially for Adam's Morgan, DC. With service and ambiance, I *could* bump it up to a 4, but the food's gotta be a bit better. read more

I have come here several times since writing my first review and have noticed that the food and service are getting even better. Things seem to be coming quicker from the kitchen too. I recently had the chef's special Briyani and I think it was one of the best things on the menu that I have tried. We ordered a dinner portion of the vegetarian momo's pan fried as an appetizer and they were fantastic. I think I prefer them pan fried to steamed here. I really like the tea here too. The people here are so nice. I think they really try to make this place a peaceful retreat for customers. When you walk in you can really feel the peace here. read more

I was instantly intrigued by the idea of Himalayan food! What is it? Who are the influences on the food, what spices did they use? My mind was swimming with the endless possibilities that lay beyond those dark tinted doors, one of the first restaurants on the usually crazy Adams Morgan strip. I finally decided to order out one day (pick it up on the way home). I was welcomed to an empty restaurant at 6pm on a Saturday. The manager greeted me with a glass of cold water, and a seat at the bar to pick my dishes. A "curry" goat, and Briyani rice and MoMo dumplings jumped out as potential to sample novel flavors. The rest of the menu was almost strictly Indian. As told, the dishes took quite a long time to come out (although there was no one there yet); but the staff hovered about attentively, asking if I wanted a mixed drink from the bar, and refilling my water. The food (eaten at home of course) was not exploding with flavor. Indeed some spices I had never tasted before were exciting and might have been masked by overly salted and curried flavors.......that being said, the Briyani and the MoMo's needed salt, and less oil. The goat, while in an interesting sauce, was almost to light and could have been more tender. Long wait for m'eh food would have given this place a sold three, but it's actually getting a 2.5 because the food did NOT agree with my stomach!! Like a diamond in the 18th Street rough, this place is a GEM! Nestled on the corner of 18th and Kalorama are the wonders of Nepal you didn't know you're little heart desire. It's no surprise if you haven't heard of it yet. From the outside, there's nothing striking. There's no flashy sign, or happy hour promotion trying to grab the hurried passerby's attention. There's something deferential about this place. As if they know they're DC's best kept secret and patiently await the next empty bellies to welcome. Once inside, you almost feel transported to a different world. The enigmatic sounds and liveliness of the streets simmer and the small space envelopes you. The tables are already neatly set with linens and silverware upon arrival. I've always had my dining experience at Himalayan Heritage with a big group of people. We order a bit of everything and share family style (my favorite). The Chicken Biryani is hands down the best dish I've ever had in my entire life. It's slowly cooked bringing together layers of spices and aromas you can't find anywhere else. The portions are more than generous and the staff is attentive and kind. I really cannot believe that after living in the area this long I hadn't stopped in to this place before, because I love Indian style food! I believe their cuisine technically falls under Nepalese / Himalayan, but I am a huge fan of what I had. We were a group of three without reservations, which didn't seem to be a problem on this Monday evening (holiday) because the place was close to empty. We started with the samoas - delicious and fried perfectly. Then I ordered a classic Chicken Tikka Masala. It was SO good. And it definitely came with enough to easily make two meals out of - both enough rice and the actual main. We also went with the garlic naan (because you ALWAYS get the garlic naan) and received a hefty amount. The naan was crisp and buttery, and all types of delicious.
