What a great find! We came on a busy Friday night and their downstairs restaurant was full so we got sent upstairs to their overflow spot and we were collectively grateful for this so we could enjoy a quieter dinner together! All the food was so delicious, really enjoyed the dumplings and the crab rangoon. I'm so picky about my crab rangoons and they were fried perfectly with a delicious creamy inside!! Big fan of the baby buk choy too, was seasoned perfectly. Our waitress was such a sweetie! Easy to joke with and was all around so lovely. Definitely want to come back!!
My friend brought me here. It was good we got the crab Rangoon, orange chicken, vegetable fried rice and a taro milk tea with tapioca. They were extremely busy but we were sat down within a few minutes. Food came fast too. The ambiance is Chinatown Asian vibe. There's large table and chair seating for small and large groups. Parking can be a challenge if street parking.
Delicious food and quick service. We stopped in for a snack and loved the soup dumplings. They were so delicious and filling. We also got a sushi roll and it was great too ! It is small inside but there is plenty of seating.
Best Chinese sit-down spot I've been to in Chicago so far! It has a very mom-and-pop feel. The decor is a little older, but it fits the casual vibe perfectly. Service was nice overall. The only issue was they probably forgot our salmon nigiri since it didn't come out until after we finished eating and reminded them. The Mongolian beef was the best version I've had in Chicago so far. The texture was perfect, the meat wasn't fatty, and it wasn't oily at all. I just wish the sauce was a little sweeter. 8/10. The scallion pancakes were incredible. Super crispy, flaky, and not greasy. Definitely one of the best I've had. 9.5/10. The chicken soup dumplings were good, but a little inconsistent. Some were packed with soup while others lost most of it. 8/10. The biggest surprise was the egg tofu with enoki mushroom. The tofu was silky, the enoki added great texture, and the flavor was delicious. Easily the best egg tofu I've had. 9/10. The salmon nigiri was fine, but didn't stand out. I did love their ginger though. It was sweet and not overly spicy.
The food that was served was not what we would expect. The dumplings were broken, and the lemon grass wings tasted like fried wings. The service provided was acceptable, but not for an 18% gratuity. The ambiance of the establishment was normal and pleasant. The worst experience was the men's restroom which reminded me of a wet dog aroma.
It was our first time here and probably last. Unfortunately the food fell short and was just okay. The hand pulled noodles did not look nor taste hand pulled. When you order hand pulled noodles you expect the slight chewiness and texture that they are known for. The salt and pepper pork had a battered coating much like that of sweet and sour chicken and not the thinner version you get elsewhere. The salt and pepper taste were lacking. The xiao long bao was probably the only thing we really enjoyed. Service was speedy and the food came out fast. Unfortunately there are too many other restaurants for us to visit to come back for just a meh experience.
Food quantity is the best. Every single dish that we ordered is shareable and delicious. So pricing is not that bad considering that everything is shareable. Our total came up to $58.62 after ordering 1 boba, 1 appetizer, 1 soup, 1 XLB, & 1 fried rice. This food quantity would have been enough for 3-4 people to share depending on how much you eat. Service is a little lacking when it comes to checking on you but if you flag a server, they'll attend to your needs immediately. Ambiance is an authentic mom & pop Chinese restaurant. Big tables, shareable dishes. TIP: If you like condiments such as siracha or hoisin, you have to ask.
Hing Kee is definitely worth a stop, but just know you might have a bit of a wait. The wait was longer than we would've liked, but the restaurant isn't that big, so I totally understand how it can back up during busy times. Once we were seated, the restaurant was standard looking and clean. The food made up for it. The egg rolls were super fresh, hot, and perfectly seasoned with a great crunch. The General Tso chicken was the star though, really flavorful with a nice balance of sweet and heat, and there was this bright hit of orange zest that made the whole dish stand out. Overall, great food and I'd come back, I'd just plan ahead and expect a wait.
Hing Kee has a huuuuuge menu, but I only wanted dumplings because I wanted to eat at other places too. Ordered the pork xiao long bao and the shrimp & pork dumplings in szechuan chili oil. Didn't get much of that soupy goodness with the XLB because each one was unfortunately leaking already before I even touched them. So all in all, the dumplings were good, but were they amazing? No. I was disappointed, but still liked the dumplings even though there was no soup in them. Service was whatever and the table we were sat at was a bit dirty. The Vietnamese coffee was awful too. I figured it wouldn't be good as I wouldn't order something Vietnamese at a Chinese place, but husband really wanted coffee. Don't order it haha
This place needs to be more popular!! The food is heavenly! The food was so good, I didn't take pics of everything cuz I got really busy eating The flavors were dancing in my mouth! I had a couple of vegetarian items- mapo tofu and friend eggplants. My family had a few chicken dishes and each one loved it all. The table next to us got some fried rice and the aroma made me hungry immediately after finishing my dinner. I know what I'm getting next time. This restaurant is in the middle of China Town, so parking is always a challenge, but put in the effort and get here cuz it's worth it.
This restaurant is located in Chinatown. It is a very small establishment, seating is limited. We sat down & placed our order pretty quickly. We ordered the chicken dumplings and combination fried rice. I also got a brown rice, green tea. The combination fried rice came out first it wasn't fresh. It was served to us a bit lukewarm. Decent size dish, it can serve up to two people. The rice was very mid in flavor. It lacked the traditional fried rice taste. We requested chili oil to savor our food. The chili oil added a good heat to it. The chicken dumplings were excellent. You do get quite a bit. Me and my partner shared them and had a few left over to take home. My brown rice tea was excellent nice and light green tea flavor with a nutty rice undertone. The cleanliness of the outside area where we all eat at was pretty up to par. However, the bathrooms were disgusting as soon as you walk back there before even entering the bathroom it smells atrocious. I walked into the women's restroom. It was a pigsty. I saw something floating above the door doorway and it was a roach caught in a spiderweb. It doesn't even feel safe to wash your hands in there it is that dirty. They need to do something about that because that is a representation of how they are treating their kitchen back there because it is right next to the kitchen. I did feel some kind of way after eating and seeing that but Hopefully they get their bathroom together other than that I did enjoy my experience here. I might come back because they have so many great options on their menu and I'm interested in trying a few other things. The service was good. They accommodated us intended to all of our needs.

I wanted soup dumplings while in Chicago and found this spot while searching online. Nate and I walked in around 8 pm on a weekday and were able to get a table right away. The menu is huge, but we were focused - we got an order of pork xiao long bao and shrimp toast. Service is no frills and efficient. The dumplings came out steaming hot and they were full of pork. A few did stick to the basket and ripped, so that was a little sad, but they were flavorful and tasty. I loved the shrimp toast - it was crispy and savory, and covered in sesame seeds. I would definitely come back for more soup dumplings and other dishes. The portions for main items looked huge, and it would be a great place for groups.
Get their hand-pulled noodles!! Get their xiaolongbaos!! Get both!! Get everything!! Just kidding, while they have an extensive menu (and I mean extensive - they have appetizers, chicken/pork/beef/seafood/veggies, sushi, AYCE hotpot, noodles, xiaolongbaos....the list goes on), I think they're best with dough stuff! For around $8-9, you get this huuuge bowl of hand-pulled noodles. Broth is flavorful but not out of this world....xiao long baos are so tasty...this place really hits the spot for all your noodle soup cravings! There's not a whole lot of seating, but at least while we're there they've always managed to seat groups quick enough so that there isn't a line out the door. They accept credit, but the last time we were there they said they can only take split the check if your bill is over $40. So we just had one person pay and venmo'ed, not a huge inconvenience. read more

First time trying soup dumplings and OMG now I crave them! We got the pork and chicken, and I think I prefer the pork. Will have to go back to verify though We went with a friend who speaks Chinese, so I'm not sure how the ordered would have gone in his absence. It seemed that most servers were primarily non English-speaking. I could be totally wrong about that, but regardless, ordering was quick and easy. Our dumplings were amazing (got 4 to split between 8 people) and we also really enjoyed the noodle bowls, especially the spicy garlic one. So yum. They were poppin around 11:00 on a Saturday night. One downside is that the bathroom area smells TERRIBLE. Not sure if it's a delicacy they're cooking or what, but man... it's rough. Not like sewage smell, but something else. The food here was actually really good, so my 3-star rating isn't reflective of that. The service was just very slow and as if we weren't being paid attention to. Once you get past the not-so-great service, I really enjoyed my meal here. We ordered the pork soup dumplings, which seem to be THE specialty to eat here. It was cool to watch one of the cooks as she expertly stuffed and folded/closed the dumplings quickly and pushed out tray after tray of freshly steamed dumplings. We also ordered the sizzling teriyaki chicken and the scallion pancakes. Everything tasted very fresh, flavorful and well presented. The soup dumplings are really, really good - I didn't know exactly how to eat them or why they gave me a spoon, but I soon figured out that you can "pop" them in the spoon and then gobble up the dumpling along with the lovely broth that's inside the dumpling. What I liked most about the teriyaki chicken was that it wasn't too sweet. The scallion pancakes were super crispy and seemed like they had *just* come out of the frying pan - a perfect complement to the chicken. Don't have too many expectations of speedy service, but definitely come over for those lovely dumplings. This is my 100th review, yay! read more
Loved the pork belly with the buns, the crab meat dumplings were decent but pretty pricey, and the cold noodles with chicken was not something that I liked very much. The cold noodles weren't mixed so it was on you to mix what toppings you wanted and it was kind of lacking in flavor. This place is solid for family style with friends, but the wait can be a bit significant. Can't compare to other Chinatown restaurants but this place was decent and not super expensive. First time trying Xiao Long Bao ($8.99 for 8 soup dumplings)! We got the Shanghai Style Pork Soup Dumplings and it was delicious! USE A SPOON! Figured it out a lil too late and ended up spilling half the soup in the dumplings we also got the Dan Dan Noodle ($8.50) and Salted Fish & Chicken w/ String Bean Stone Bowl ($8.99)! The three dishes were tasty and it all went so well together. Noodles were so tangy and the broth was flavorful with a kick! Just as a FYI, string bean dish comes with rice underneath the veggies and chicken. Service was eh, the server didn't seem very happy but the food came out fast so it's whatever. The great thing about Chinatown in Chicago is that you can just show up not knowing where to eat and stumble upon some really great spots and won't break the piggy bank. This was the case for Hing Kee and I gotta say this was a solid spot for noodle soup or soup dumplings (aka xiao long bao or XLB for short). Honestly I didn't have much expectations for this one, and the beef noodle spot we had ordered looking kinda whatever to be honest but once I dove in... that was some hearty soup and perfect for the gloomy & rainy day weather at the time. Not to mention the noodles were perfection! I feel like growing up in Southern California a majority of my life with easy access to plenty of Chinese spots, I feel like a never had a true appreciation for XLB. But since moving away, I can't stop thinking how I never got on the Din Tai Fung/soup dumplings crazy train. Anyways, the soup dumpling here are a must. I'll leave it at that. Lemme start off with I'm from California and there's a bunch of delicious Asian food I would die for where I live. And yet, every time I visit Chicago, I crave for this place!!! I would even pay a delivery fee to have Hing Kee delivered to me :) I have lost count of how many times I ate here. This place has the freshest noods and the most delicious dumplings. You take one bite and literally, the whole party goes quiet cause all you want to do is eat more. I always order the Dan Dan noods which is CONSISTENTLY so good and there's a tiny bit of kick. It's definitely big enough to share between 2-3 peeps but tbh, I don't mind eating it all by myself. Its that good ugh- carb Heaven. I also always order the spicy dumplings/ wontons with pork- so flavorful and satisfying (it's not that spicy). We ordered green beans this time and that was delicious and crispy! Gotta get your greens. Overall, delicious Taiwanese food and dumplings here, so happy my bf introduced me to this place. read more

Best place for soup dumplings I've found in Chicago. The XLB are cheap and come out fast. Have been here a couple times now for the XLB and the beef soup! Highly recommend. Price is very good and the staff are what you expect as in there fast and efficient but not there to chit chat. There is a bit of a wait right now though because of COVID restrictions. Would definitely recommend to people! read more
One year later, and Hing Kee is still my favorite Chinese restaurant! If it's your first time in Chinatown and you want to try some authentic dishes, then this is where it's at! Simply the best comfort Chinese food. We order the same items every time: pork Shanghai xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), pork and crab xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), spicy braised beef noodles, and pork belly with veggies and buns. I came here with some Yelp buddies and was able to try a lot of the menu. The most memorable dishes were the pork belly, the Singapore noodles and the salt and pepper tofu. Seriously, the tofu alone is worth me revisting the place. Perfectly fried, but still jiggly. I don't think I've had a lot of deep fried soft tofu but somehow they did it. Like what others had said, the Xiao long bao were good, but it's hard to compare them with other soup dumplings because they're so hard to find. I thought they were decent and definitely a must try if you've never had them before. We didn't have any trouble with service at all. In fact, the food came out crazy fast. I think the key is to be aggressive at chinese restaurants. If you want service you have to your big girl voice and get their attention. Pretty impressed with the food overall. I don't think I would eat their sushi though. Just stick with the noodle-based dishes. And the salt and pepper tofu of course! read more

Always wanted to try Hing Kee because their menu was bible-thick, which had a lot of options. Went there on a Saturday right before noon and place was almost full. Service was nice and food came in fast. Shrimp Toast okay, just needed more shrimp. Scallion Pancakes were a let-down, needed more flavor. Will not order next time. Siu Mai was fine. We ordered the Pork&Crab soup dumpling which was so good. This is probably their specialty. If you ever come here, always order soup dumplings. We also had the Pork Belly with preserved vegetables which was also very flavorful. Over-all, it was okay. I'd comeback to explore their Japanese/sushi menu. i'd give it 3.5/5. read more
Hing Kee has gone through quite a few pivots through the years, and it seems like they finally landed on their strengths. Back in the day, Hing Kee used to serve cheap eats in Chinatown Square. After a while, they hired a chef who made fresh noodles from scratch right by the window. He was great, but the soups were lacking. Now, they use the same noodle station to make Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) from scratch. Ah-hah! Everyone in the restaurant was ordering these, so I caved and ordered a serving. It did not disappoint. I've had XLB all over Chicago, and this is as good as it gets here. (If you've had better in Chicago, do share!) The dumpling skin is relatively thin except at the top, which creates a sturdy point to hold it from. The broth is delightfully body-warming and tasty. You can't have just one! My favorite XLB is served at Ding Tai Fung (Toronto) and Shanghai Asian Cuisine (NYC), but Hing Kee brought me really close to those two establishments in terms of their XLB. In terms of the other offerings on the menu, you'll notice that there's Chinese, Japanese, and even some Vietnamese served. I haven't tried the Japanese in a while, but you can't go wrong with the Chinese menu items like their stone bowl offerings. The pho is a little oily for my taste, and doesn't have the same depth as dedicated Vietnamese places, but it's actually quite good. Hing Kee might seem a bit confused, but give it a shot. You'll be pleasantly surprised by their fast service, excellent XLB in Chicago, and value for price. read more

Ordered the honey walnut shrimp. Menu should mention that the main ingredient is not honey, walnut or shrimp rather mayonnaise which I don't care for. Server didn't care when I mentioned this, and in addition no one came by once to check on food or service or drink. read more

MY FAVE PLACE TO GET XIAO LONG BAOS AKA SOUP DUMPLINGS IN CHICAGOOO! if you go here you have to get those. I've been coming here since the old days when they were steaming xiao long baos in the corner of the restaurant by the windows with a guy hand pulling nooodles live. I haven't tried xiao long baos better than this place for the amount of soup, the taste, and the price in Chicago. The noods are also very tasty with the noods having an "al dente" texture and very flavorful soup. read more

I was in Chicago for a few days and my friend from the area recommended Hing Kee for XLB (soup dumplings). So juicy, delicious and flavorful! Probably one of the best places for soup dumplings in the area. The restaurant itself is really small. My friend and I went around 8:30 and we waited about 25 minutes until a table opened up. read more

Anyone who is a frequent visitor of China Town knows that Hing Kee is the spot for (1) Xiao long bao and (2) pho. The prices are more than reasonable considering the quality of the food. The xiao long bao are delicious: the soup dumplings are savory, and importantly made fresh daily. You can see the dumplings being made right in front of you. As you enter the restaurant, the dumplings are made at the counter next to the sushi bar. Generally, I am skeptical of sushi being served at a Chinese restaurant, but this restaurant is an exception. Also, the phoooooo is ph-antastic. #Souplife. The broth is ______ (insert fire emoji here). Hing Kee is also pretty consistent with take-out. For the full-experience, I recommend going to the restaurant and exploring Chinese cuisine Bourdain-style: No reservations. Note* service depends on the time and day you go. read more

This place is absolutely legend! We keep coming back for more, to enjoy the authentic taste of noodles that is found in China! Their noodles carry tastes unique to China that is unlike the Malaysian, Taiwanese or Hong Kong cuisine. Their noodles are hand made and have a Q factor that is firm and springy, really terrific and addictive noodles! Today we tried the dan dan mian and spicy chicken noodles. Both Sichuan specialties with tons of aromatic spices. Dan dan mian is fried minced pork with a healthy dose of sesame paste, Sichuan pepper and chili oil, making the broth rich and complex, and is bowl exploding with aromatic layers and flavors. Laziji noodles is basically spicy chicken noodles. The broth is a clear chicken soup that is clean and sweet, and topped with marinated chicken infused with Sichuan chilli peppers, spicy bean paste, and Sichuan peppers. This gives the basic broth a extra layer of flavor profile. However it's not as spicy as laziji normally is. read more

The soup dumlings were made fresh, but the rest of the meal had sonething to be desired. The sizzling teriyaki beef platter was sizzling, but it was in a pool of grease which was totally unneccessary. Also had the salt and pepper chicken wings. They tasted like they were wings that were cooked yesterday. Overall, it was a disappointing visit. read more

I came for one reason and one reason only: soup dumplings (xlb)!! I've heard amazing things about Hing Kee and it 100% lived up to the hype! It's Chinatown, so as expected, customer-service was just acceptable and the seating wasn't that comfortable (I hate it when those plastic seats have cracks in them), but my oh my, the soup dumplings were incredible!!! There are 8 soup dumplings per order ($8.99). We tried both the pork and the pork & crab and my friend and I couldn't pick our favorite between the two! There is nothing else to say except the soup dumplings were some of the best I've ever had! read more
