Best place for soup dumplings in Chicago thus far! They should provide more shredded ginger in the vinegar, so be sure to ask. It would be nice if they would use younger ginger as well as doing a finer chopping job. Gan bei si ji dou (string beans) are a good vegetable to order to complete a meal of dumplings. read more

I come here when I really want some XLB because we don't have a Din Tai Fung in Chicago I've tried their crab and pork XLB, beef with Chinese broccoli and Dan Dan noodles. Quality wise the food is pretty good. The noodles I think are hand made and it was cooked perfectly, not soggy or hard. The Dan Dan noodles were very flavorful and has a nice kick to them. Service is not necessarily friendly but the food comes out pretty quick. Weekend nights get pretty busy here. I think on a late Saturday night we waited about 20-30 minutes. Even with that wait we had you share a table with another couple. On a week day night we were seated pretty quickly but noticed there was a rush of people coming in around 8pm-9pm. The only thing that concerns me about this place is the cleanliness. The guy who brought our food had his finger touching the top of my rice and a different guy who took our leftovers touched the leftover food with his fingers. I think this place is hands down the best soup dumplings in Chicago. Haven't tried the chicken XLB but the regular and the crab is fantastic. The noodles are also pretty good (not too salty not too heavy)- would recommend getting the spicy lamb with thick noodles!! My friend and I stopped here for dinner because she had heard good things about their handmade noodle soup. And unfortunately I don't think the food lived up to our expectations. The menu at Hing Kee is insanely huge. Soup, dumplings, sushi, and regular dishes. It's crazy huge. We ordered Lemongrass chicken wings, beef brisket handmade noodle soup, and the green chives and shrimp dumpling handmade noodle soup. You get to choose the noodle type with your soup which was cool. There were four types. The chicken wings came out first and they were delicious. Well seasoned. Crispy and delicious. While we were eating the wings, my friend was told that her original order of the braised beef handmade noodle soup was no longer available so she switched to the beef brisket. It came to the table quickly. The beef was very fatty and she said the soup was very bland. My soup took longer to arrive. We waited maybe 5 to 10 minutes and still it hadn't arrived. We asked a waiter about it and finally it arrived. The dumplings were tasty but not the best dumplings I've had. The soup was incredibly bland like my friend said. Like the noodles had flavor from the soup and I think they took it out of the broth. Overall I was very underwhelmed with the food. I was extremely disappointed that our entrees didn't arrive at the same time. My friend was equally frustrated because she felt awkward eating with me just watching. Originally looked on Yelp for Chinese restaurants serving XLBs (Xiao Long Baos) because me and my boyfriend were craving them. We narrowed down our choices to Hing Kee and some other places but this one caught our attention because of the location in Chinatown and the Yelp pictures looked the most appealing. We were a bit worried about the overall 3 and 1/2 star rating but I'm glad we came here nonetheless. We had a 5 person party and had no problem getting seats. Service was attentive. We took a while to decide on what to get and when we were finally ready... I had to catch someone's eye and flag them down. We ordered 4 entrees to share: -Sizzling Black Pepper Short Ribs -Beef w/Chinese Broccoli Chow Mein -Szechuan Green Beans -Pork XLB (8) My favorites were the XLBs and the green beans. I would say the XLBs were pretty flimsy and a couple of times the wrapper already broke as I was grabbing one to put on my spoon. But the soup inside was delicious! Me and my boyfriend want to come back and just order the XLBs as a meal. Some of the entrees also came with sides of rice which I liked eating with the short ribs and beef broccoli chow mein. The short ribs were a big hit as that got devoured before anything else. Great flavor and not too salty. I liked the chow mein's crispiness and the broccoli really helped to offset the beef sauce. We ordered just the right amount for everyone because we were able to finish all the food. Everyone was surprised at the total for the entire meal because it was really cheap and not what we were expecting. Casual spot in China Town that my husband and I visited on a Monday night when we were craving soup dumplings. The place itself is nothing special with regard to the decor and atmosphere, and the service is sub par at best (rude waitresses, and they try to hurry you along to get more people in the door) However, they have a vast menu and the food is delicious. So far, this is my favorite place in Chinatown to get outstanding homemade noodles. If you want authentic, bouncy and "Q" noodles, this is the place to go. I enjoyed the Ja Jang Mian noodles and normally I would say that the price is a little high for being Chinatown but because the noodles are homemade, I think it's okay. I would stay clear of the beef noodle soup though because besides from the noodles, the soup base, beef, and veggies are subpar. A must order item is the Xiao Long Bao which is made exquisitely here. The quality has gone so horribly bad that I vowed never to come back and I hope I am not getting any food poisoning after this meal. this has been our go to restaurant in chinatown for at least the past 7 years, the food is so good!! they are always quick to seat us even when we come with larger parties (6+ people) and quick to get our food made. the soup dumplings are a must have, they are fresh made daily same as the handmade noodles. the quality is quite good and food is always fresh. servers will not bother you and just need to be waved over if you need something or they will not stop by other than for refilling waters. once you get over that the service is otherwise good and they all really know their stuff. they recently remodeled the interior so the place looks quite nice now. highly recommended! read more

By far the best place to get noodles if you are near Chinatown square. While the noodles always have a great texture, I think they need to work on their broths. I've always found their soups/noodle bowls to be a little bland. Apart from the noodle offerings, their classic Chinese dishes are also very delicious. The xiao long baos certainly live up to expectation but you can't go wrong blindly choosing anything from the menu. The food is well seasoned, the food service is extremely fast, and the prices are affordable. I consider Hing Kee to be a very solid Chinese restaurant. I've taken friends here and would even feel confident taking my traditional Asian parents here - which means a lot if you've ever met Asian parents, particularly mine. ;) read more

Honestly I have not been so disappointed with any restaurant in Chinatown til today. The service was really mediocre, okay at best. If that wasn't bad, as we sat down and waited for our food to arrive we saw a COCKROACH walking up the wall (my partner killed it with a napkin). From then on me and my partner felt sorta uncomfortable sitting where we were sitting. We ordered the California Roll ($6.60), the Shrimp and pork Wonton Noodle Soup ($10.99), the Pan fried pork potstickers ($9.99), and the strawberry smoothie ($5.99), the total coming up to $50.84. The California Roll just did NOT sit well with me the seaweed and the rice tasted SOUR, I've had many California rolls from plenty of other restaurants and they have never tasted sour. The shrimp and wonton noodle soup was not the best, the noodles were clumped together and the wontons had this weird flavor that was no shrimp. The first thing we noticed is that the pan fried Potstickers were THICK and somewhat hard. And as for the smoothie I really had high hopes for the smoothie but I was very disappointed when I took my first sip and found a small hair in it, not only that but the smoothie was really sour. After that my partner and I decided to leave, we could even finish any of the dishes they brought. We payed for the bill asked the food to go and threw it out in the nearest trash. I lived in NYC and that's where I learned the greatness of soup dumplings. Since I moved back to Chicago, I've been always trying to find soup dumplings in Chicago. I've been to Imperial Lamian which I like a lot but it's so pricey. I been to Hing Kee before because people said their beef soup is good but I left leaving unsatisfied and disappointed. Little did I know Hing Kee actually does Shanghai Soup Dumplings. And it's reasonably priced! You get about 8 for $8. Imperial Lamian which is good gives you like 3 for $9. LOL. Anyways this review is solely based on their soup dumplings. It's hard to find but this place has it and they do a good job with it. I'm not going to complain so due to the rarity of finding soup dumplings, and finding affordable prices for it, Hing Kee is currently my only spot for it. I've had their other dishes before and it's just standard Chinatown Food. Beef Chow Fund, Black Pepper beef cubes etc. Not bad, but not great just standard. I'm not huge on Chinese food, but I love some good quality sushi. Every time I'm in china town, I make sure to stop by this little gem. Their sushi is always fresh and melts in your mouth. I also make sure to take some staple pieces home. Some of my husbands favorites are Mongolian beef, sesame chicken, and garlic shrimp. For appetizers I get him hot and sour soup and crab Rangoon. He isn't a fan of their orange chicken, he thinks it's too sweet. Overall, I'm always pleased with my experience. Depending on wait staff, it can be very slow. read more

Four of us came here on a Tuesday evening for noodles. We ordered the spicy lamb noodles, braised beef noodles, salmon roll, and Vietnamese spring rolls. The spicy lamb noodles were barely filling. There was very little lamb and it was just mildly spicy. The broth wasn't very authentic either so I didn't even bother sipping on it. Whenever I'm craving some Xiao Long Baos (soup dumplings) this is my go to place! I honestly think their dumplings are delicious! They are always made freshly and are cooked to order. I also ordered their Shu-Mai which I think had pork and shrimp. That was also really yummy. Along with those, I had the beef brisket soup with egg noodles. Their egg noodles are also made in-house (you get to choose what size noodles you want for your soup) which is a cool concept.
