Oh how I have missed you Hing Lung! Hing Lung was an old school jook/congee and noodle place in SF Chinatown that closed down several years ago. Now they have moved into the old Ichi Ramen. I guess they are too cheap to change the signs in front because it still says Ichi Ramen, lol. It says Hing Lung in the red Chinese characters on the front windows. Here's the scoop. If you get the right items here, you will love the taste. First you must get the jook (congee/rice porridge). It is creamy, smooth and full of flavor. Also the wontons are very nice indeed. The beef brisket looked really good too but I didn't get it this time. The house special chow mein was definitely on point. Make sure you order it HK crispy noodle style. I wanted to order some the rice noodle roll (cheong fun) filled with BBQ pork (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_noodle_roll) but the waitress said the chef who makes the rice noodle roll leaves at 3pm. That sucks! Too bad. I also got the fried dough, which I didn't care for. It was way too thick and doughy, not crispy and crunchy like it should be. Look the place is packed and cramped. The sign says capacity 32 and I swear there were about 50 people in there. The wait staff looks stressed out from all of the crowds. So you don't really come here for the service and ambiance. If you live in SF and like Cantonese style jook and noodles, you'd know about Hing Lung. They are most famous for their liver porridge (jook) and cow tongue sweet donut. Finally, after much disappointment that they closed down the shop in Chinatown, the chef went to Cafe Tsui Wah in San Mateo, left again, now settled in San Bruno. Supposedly there's another one in Fremont called MW Bistro which also have the same liver porridge (jook) and cow tongue donut but I asked the waitress and she said this one in San Bruno is the one from Chinatown and not sure about the one in Fremont. Inside the shop, they posted the famed original SF shop news clip on the wall so this got to be it. The liver jook is as good as I could remember, jook is smooth semi-thick consistency silky sweet and liver perfectly tender. None of the other shops I went to can duplicate the same nor can make as good liver jook as Hing Lung. They must have a secret recipe. Cow tongue donut tasted the same but wish they would make to order like in SF as the donut came out kind of lukewarm. The hainan style chicken - must get. When the chicken came with a thin layer of jelly (collagen) coagulated under the chicken skin, this is what you'd want to look for if you ever order from any other restaurants. So good! The shop has about 15 tables but otherwise much cleaner than their original shop in Chinatown. Decided to try Hing Lung's new location (formerly Ichi Ramen, the sign is still up). It was busy for dinner time and there wasn't a table open for two. Ended talking to another customer who was also waiting for a table for two, we decided to share a table. I asked the waitress if we could share a table and she said it was fine. Ordered the Chinese doughnut, beef rice porridge, pumpkin with salted egg white, and salt & pepper spare ribs. The beef rice porridge was great, it had large amounts of minced beef. The pink in with salted egg white was a first for me but it was good. Reminded me of the salted eggs in the sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves. The salt & pepper spare ribs were okay. read more

As mentioned in other reviews, Hing Lung used to be a staple of San Francisco based Chinese Jook Joints that served jook, chow fun/mein, family style dishes, Chinese BBQ, etc. Hing Lung closed their Broadway location probably 6+ years ago with their 19th and Lincoln location closing more than a decade ago. So needless to say, it was a pleasant surprise to see the Hing Lung name return, this time on the peninsula in San Bruno. History lesson aside, you're reading this to find out how the food is... well I'm happy to say, you won't be disappointed. I'm basing this review off my second visit to Hing Lung. The first visit was during dinner hours (we had to wait about 30 mins for a table), we had the preserved meat clay pot rice and the fish soup noodle. The clay pot rice was perfect, it contained a good amount of meat, a few stalks of Chinese veggies, and the rice was fluffy on top with a good crisp bottom; as it should be. The fish broth noodle was also quite tasty according to my wife (I'm not a fan of fish soups). So today we returned to have Hing Lung's Meatball Jook and the classic Cantonese staple of Beef Chow Fun. First off, the jook was just ok, I would say you'll find better jook at Fat Wong's about 2 miles down El Camino. The jook at Hing Lung took on a more solid consistency with the rice kernels being more pronounced vs. a smooth consistency, and their meatballs were quite hard compared to the ones at Fat Wong's. However, their Beef Chow Fun displayed good "Wok Hei" or "breath of the wok". This means high heat cooking which usually results in a good stir fry within the dish to both cook and preserve the texture of the ingredients. Lastly we had a fried Chinese donut (the cow's tongue shaped version) and found it crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. In the end, I hope Hing Lung can keep its quality up as many of these jook joints fall victim to complacency which results in quality drop. But in the meantime, head out and enjoy the return of this classic San Francisco "greasy chopstick" joint... now in San Bruno. read more

We came around 8pm, the restaurant was fully packed. We waited about 15 mins before getting seated for a party of five. Have heard mixed reviews from friends and families who have visit. Based on my own visit, I like it quick a bit as I enjoy the stronger flavors in the dishes here. AVOID coming here during lunch hours, the wait can be quite long. The ambiance here is really loud, so no, don't be taking your date here. Wait time: I made the mistake of coming here at lunch time so there was a crowd outside waiting for seat, I was the 11th party on the sign in sheet. However, given that there were no renovation from the store's previous carnation of Ichi Ramen (Mt. Fuji is still in the back drop), the place is set up to accommodate small parties (Probably shouldn't ever come here with more than 4 people). While others were standing in line being groggy. I actually go in within 15minutes. I was the second part of 2 and the first party wasn't present when hostess came out to call their name. Menu: Interestingly you can still order ramen here. Other than than, it's primarily HK/Cantonese style food items. Looks like there's good number of good breakfast items as well as some dinner dishes. Food taste: The beef brisket over the noodles here are absolutely lovely, even though I cannot stomach a whole order. it's really heavy, but delicious. The pig blood porridge was ok, a little thick, but I think it was decent. Could be a little more flavorful, but it was not awfully bland. The fried dough was a tad too crunchy. I can see it being good when they make it into those rice noodle wrapped fried dough, but as a standalone, they should be a light crunch on the outside and soft-ish on the inside. It was too tough. Overall, I'd probably come here with my friends who are into heavier taste. I'd avoid coming here with folk who have a milder palette. read more

First time, here for me. I had to try it since it's in the neighborhood. The decor was nice and limited sitting. The place is fairly small and cozy, but clean. We ordered Yang Chow Fried Rice, Minced Beef with Egg over rice, Thai style rock cod, Sweet and Sour Pork, and Fried buns. All were delicious. Ichi Ramen, located in a nondescript strip mall, actually has a history and following that belies it's name. The Chinese characters on the glass windows actually reveal that Ichi Ramen is the relocated restaurant Hing Lung, a long time San Francisco Chinatown institution, and the posted menus reveals that the cuisine is the same comfort food Hing Lung always offered, including Congee, wonton noodle soups, and rice rolls, but now includes a few trendy ramen options (thus the name I suppose). We arrived for a late afternoon lunch (past 2 pm) and the place was packed with a queue and sign up list. The affordable prices and homey food has obviously struck a chord with the predominantly Chinese clientele in the area. Our order: Rice Rolls in XO Sauce - nicely served in a clay pot and well flavored with both XO sauce and a few string beans. Tasty. Congee with Cubed Pork Blood - $7.80. I used to love Hing Lung's Congee and the version here is solid though not as good as I remember. A bit too lumpy but decent flavor and plentiful pigs blood. BBQ Selection - a small dish with two BBQ selections: BBQ Pork and Hainan Chicken. The BBQ Pork was limp and flavorless and clearly made awhile ago. Same with the minced ginger Scallion sauce that lacked punch or freshness. The Hainan Chicken was better but overall inferior to Cooking Papa, Hong Kong Saigon Restaurant, and many others I've had. Overall, I'm glad to see Hing Lung survive as Ichi Ramen and will remember it as a comfort food stop. I'd probably get the Congee and rice rolls again, but I'd skip the BBQ to try the wonton noodle soups and the beef brisket. Although Cooking Papa can be inconsistent, I think I favor it over Ichi. TL;DR This is a delicious throwback from my childhood. Get the braised beef noodles. When I was a teenager, my family used to go up to San Francisco to visit my dad's old neighborhood, and sometimes we would stop by a greasy joint called "Hing Lung." I loved that place. They had the most amazing, fluffy chinese donuts (that we would put into jook/rice porridge). You could also get them rolled up in paper-thin sheets of rice noodle. That was a treat that I looked forward to. But then, probably due to rent or health reasons it closed. Recently, my parents let me know that they had found the second incarnation of Hing Lung! It had "Ichiban Ramen" on the sign, but this was it. So we took a trip up to try it out, and it was basically as I remembered from my childhood. We got a number of dishes, and they were all quite good. Waits were long, and my husband was the only white guy (and this is a time when that's a good thing). The best thing on the menu was the braised beef stew with rolled rice noodles. The Hong Kong style noodles were also delicious, and my son got his first taste of the (savory) donuts. I was like... whatever.. But there was a female customer fed up withing chilly wind sitting by the the door. she decided to move to inner table that sits 4. The waitress immediately came over and scold her. In my dining life, i have never never seen any service staff scold a customer for changing seat. (even Sam Woo in old days wasn't this bad). This place is a bit small and there's always a wait, but I think it's worth eating here. They are known for their Porridge and Fried Dough. I tried their regular Fried Dough with their Pork Liver Congee and both were very good. Their Fried Dough w Sweet Crisp is sooo good. It could be eaten on its own but it's only good when it's fresh. Another one of my favorite here is the Thai Style Filet of Cod. The breading and sauce is very delicious - I sometimes come here to just order this dish to go. If you're looking for an authentic place for HK-style jook and noodle soups, this is a great spot across the street from Tanforan. Located in the shopping plaza with Marshalls and Chuck E Cheese, this restaurant has a sign that says "Ichi Ramen" since they have yet to change it from what the place was last. I ordered the beef brisket fun soup which had a large and extremely tender portion of brisket/tendon. The flat rice noodle was fresh and the soup was very flavorful with the brisket sauce--gingery, sweet, and savory. We also got the Hainan chicken porridge, which was very authentic. Their chicken has bones (so beware if you are not used to this), but is flavorful and falls off the bone easily. The jook was nice and "meen"--a nice smooth yet glutinous consistency that I look for when the rice's starch is broken down well. With a bit of soy sauce, it is super yummy. I was only disappointed with the rice noodle roll with Chinese fried bread here. While it usually comes crispy on the outside and is slightly softened by a sweet soy sauce, I was sad that the Chinese fried bread came soft and stale. Therefore, it was just sad and kind of oily. The dishes here are slightly pricier than SF Chinatown, since you're paying a bit more for the comfier seating. The seating is pretty comfortable for parties of 4 or less, though the tables are slightly close together. So far I have been twice in the late afternoon without having to wait for a table, though I bet there is a wait during peak hours. Usually there are two waiters for all the tables, so I also expect service to be less efficient during those times though they get the job done. If you don't care for service but want great HK noodles/jook dishes, this is a nevertheless a great choice. read more

Let's jump straight into the food... 1. Pork liver porridge - Not a fan of pork liver, but they gave a decent amount of it. The porridge was yummy and we also got the sweet and salty donuts, which definitely complimented the porridge. 2. Chinese donut roll - Probably one of the best chinese donut rolls I had. It isn't rock hard like some places. It was nice and fluffy and the green onion added extra flavor too which is a plus. 3. Seafood pan fried noodles - The ingredients weren't skimped. There was octopus, fish, mushrooms, baby bok choy, etc. There was a decent amount of sauce so that the noodles aren't too dry too. 4. Beef brisket rice noodle clay pot - SOOO DELICIOUS. Every table literally ordered this and I see why. The beef was soft and tender, and the sauce was tasty. 10/10 would always get this dish when I come back. 5. Chinese broccoli w/ oyster sauce - Standard. Just some normal veggie with oyster sauce that you can dip or pour over. Nothing special. The restaurant is pretty small so there may be a wait. We came at lunch time and it was hard to get the attention of the servers to order, but afterwards, the servers were pretty attentive. I dropped one of my chopsticks and they were able to give me a brand new set right away. There's an abundance of parking so there shouldn't be a problem looking for a parking spot in the plaza. Yes, there is always a line but they serve really authentic Canto food and that's rare even for the Bay Area. I went here at a recommendation from a friend and was pretty disappointed at what I got for the price; ordered their chicken, mushrooms clay pot. It had only a few pieces of chicken, lots of bones, gobs of rice and 3 mushrooms for $16. I also ordered their Beef Chow Fun and it didn't have much, except rice noodles and bean sprouts for $13. Finally, I ordered chicken in fish broth with rice noodles. This dish had the most meat out of the 3 dishes I ordered, but disappointed that it only had a little piece of Bok Chou, as the picture on the menu had 2 visible. This place is legit Hong Long style - packed and tight seating - and the food delicious. I come visit my family once in a while from LA. There is no shortage of HK style cafes down here, but it's almost depressing how little of these cafes there are in the peninsula, so imagine my excitement when one finally opened in San Bruno. Don't expect the service to be amazing. Legit HK means busy and high turnover. That translates to, "Eat and get out," and the servers aren't subtle about it. I recommend getting takeout here. Quick in-and-out with the luxury of eating at your own pace in the comfort of your home. Prices are cheap for the Bay Area. Definitely try it out. read more

Tell me why I had to wait 1 hour for my to-go order? I called them ahead of time to pre-order 4 things: 2 porridge, 1 fried rice and 1 broccoli beef fried noodles and they said to pickup in half an hour. I arrived 30min later and they said they're still waiting for the broccoli beef fried noodles. Another 15min passed and I said I'm still waiting for my broccoli beef fried noodles. The answer I got from the lady was that my broccoli beef fried noodles had to be cooked differently than the House fried noodles. I'm like...uhhh okaay. She said that they have to separately fried the noodles and then cooked the broccoli beef. Authentic Canto food jackpot! Seriously, its great that you don't have to go all the way to SF for some great hearty HK-style food. As you've probably read, the sign does say "Ichi Ramen" but don't come for the ramen. You come for anything but. My go-to is the pork and thousand -year-old egg porridge with a side of Chinese doughnut. It's hard to mess up but there is something about this location that makes it more flavorful and authentic-tasting. My dad and I ordered the sweet Chinese doughnut as well. Unfortunately, our waitress must've forgotten our order in general because we noticed other parties were getting their food before us. Our waitress gave us an extra sweet Chinese doughnut free of charge so thanks for that! Overall, the food is good, the service is meh, and this location is a bit of a fire hazard. Good food and fair prices. Currently there's still a sign from the previous business that was Ichi Ramen (just incase that confuses you and you see that sign it's actually Hing Lung). I really like the fried food here and the food is pretty good... They also speak Cantonese here :D -1 star because there is barely any seating for the amount of customers they had. It looks like it's understaffed in terms of waitresses in comparison to how many customers there were. So many people :/ took a long time to finally get seated. Not good for groups more than 6 people (in my opinion) unless you go during a time when there's not that many people. Service is just like any other Chinese restaurant I've been to.
