The oyster sauce that came on the side helped a bit. The tendon and tripe were perfectly tender, with the tripe being nicely seasoned and juicy. The liver was a bit too livery for my taste that day. My expectations were not that high because I always viewed Fat Wong's as the most average Cantonese restaurant which might be a bit harsh, but honestly in my most recent visit it was way better than I expected. My dad got the Fook Yin Fried Rice ($15.95) and I had to refrain from scooping too much of it on my plate because it was one of the best Fook Yin Fried Rices I have in a long time. I'm usually not even that big of a fan of this type of dish because I don't like my fried rice to be moist, but it really has that Wok Hei to it. Definitely recommend it. I also got the Barbecue Combination Over Rice ($14.95) with the Roasted Duck and BBQ Pork. Definitely skip the duck, it is not the best quality or flavorful. Plus it is lacking some moisture. That BBQ pork though is pretty good and tasty while also having some tenderness to it. The broccoli has no seasoning and is just cooked as is, but at least you get your veggies in at least. Overall honestly not bad at all. I think the new ownership is a step up. The interior isn't that much different other than the walls being painted, but it is comfortable enough. We were craving for Cantonese food when we were in the Bay Area 2 weeks ago. We found Fat Wong's Kitchen in San Bruno so decided to try it out. It was almost our last day of our trip. We ordered stir fry beef rice noodle (beef chow fun), pork and preserved egg porridge, shrimp wonton noodle soup, roasted duck noodle soup and iced red bean drink. The beef chow fun was authentic and delicious. Beef was a bit dry but the chow fun (noodle) were flavorful and not too greasy. They were known for the porridge because their restaurant name in chinese means "great porridge forever" (they play on words for beauty forever). Their pork and preserved egg porridge was also very tasty and the texture was just right. It had many preserved egg inside which I like. Shrimp wonton was mediocre because I had higher expectation on that. I'm wonton fan but their wonton tasted like dumplings and it wasn't flavorful. The soup base was also mediocre. Roasted duck noodle was very delicious as we were told that just added $2 for the thigh meat. If not, the chef will pick it randomly and may not have much meat. They gave us a lot of duck meat so it was worth to pay extra $2. Iced red bean drink was not bad but I've had better. Anyhow, we like the beef chow fun, the porridge and the roasted duck noodle. My wife liked their name in Chinese. I liked their name in English in English. Both their name and their Yelp reviews convinced me that Fat Wong's was worthy of trying. They are located on a busy street in San Bruno, not far from the many Chinese places in Millbrae in what looks like it used to be a drive through fast food restaurant. I went there for takeout 3 times in week during a recent business trip; so much that a few of the employees starting recognizing me. We ordered their wonton noodles, dumplings, beef stew and beef tripe. Everything was good. The wontons were large and full of pork and shrimp. My wife liked the dumplings. Areas of improvement: 1- Poor business practice. Please let your customer know if there is an up charge for rice noodle. I really enjoyed the brisket curry, and the pork cutlet was better than any I tried before from any Japanese restaurant. It came with about 7 or 8 generous slices of brisket, some wok fried yellow onions and sweet red pepper. Wish it had some potatoes. I give the curry brisket 4.5/5. Fat Wong's has a decently sized menu, so here's just a quick run-down of what we ordered and how it turned out! 1. Beef Brisket Noodle Soup - The brisket was braised appropriately and was very tender and well seasoned. We really enjoyed the fattier pieces as they were super flavorful. Paid an extra $1 to have rice noodle instead and it was delicious, paired really well with the beef. 2. Tripe and Organs - awesome portion which included tendon, tripe, and liver. The quality of the liver was not that great, might have been a little old. Tripe was nice and crunchy and tendon was melty delicious. Everything absorbed the spiced beef broth flavor well. 3. Spicy and Salt Wings - These were super crispy and reminded me of my grandma's fried wings. These were tossed with chili flakes, and we would have preferred jalapenos or serranos. 4. Seafood Pan Fried Noodle - Think this dish was missing some seasonings as it was super bland. Noodles could have also been crispier. Noodle soup and tripe dishes came out super quick, but we waited a good while for the remaining items. It's a decently sized place and they have soy sauce and chili oil upon request. The restaurant is not that big and it was pack full of customers and a few regulars from the interactions I observed. We ordered the tossed noodles with braised beef brisket (recommended), braised fish ball/pork skin/turnip (recommended), shrimp dumplings, and beef chow fun. Breakdown of cost: Minced Beef Porridge: $10.30 Flour Crisp (2x): $7.60 ($3.80 each for two pieces) Total with delivery fees: $26.55 The porridge was similar to how my mom used to make it - not overly thick in consistency, very soupy/watery, but also very savory. They also provided some green onions and wonton crisps to add into your soup. I also added a bit of sea salt + white pepper in it to season it a bit. We came here on a Thursday evening for dinner around 6:30 PM. We were expecting a large crowd since generally we've always seen a wait when we came here over five years ago. But when we came in this time there were lots of empty tables which was nice because we didn't have to wait. We ordered two soup noodles, one beef brisket with the wide flat rice noodles along with a wonton wide flat rice noodle soup. We originally wanted their ramen noodle which they used to have, it was a thicker egg noodle, but it seems like they no longer serve this noodle here anymore. The other options were a thin rice noodle ($1 more) or thin egg noodles. It was a slight disappointment, that they don't serve the ramen noodle we grew up with anymore, but the wide flat rice noodle fine. Overall the food was not too pricey, but the quality of the food was meh. There was a lot of rice noodle in the noodle soup (were they just trying to get rid of noodles?) and not enough broth (since the bowls weren't that large). The taste of the wontons were mediocre, and they were quite large, it with about five wontons. As far as food goes. Tastes the same as something you buy from anywhere on Irving, Clement or Chinatown. It tastes good but very pricey for what and how simple my dish was. A roasted duck over rice. Honestly feel like the frozen ones taste better because of the texture. They didn't separate the pan fried noodles from the gravy so it was extremely soggy and stale when I got home (other places usually separate it). The beef brisket also doesn't look very appetizing and doesn't look like in the photos. There was also a piece of raw meat stuck on the inside of our to go box... They also refused to give me napkins when I asked for them. There are better places for canto food and I won't come back again. Also after reading other negative reviews and some about possibly overpaying for the food, I told my mom (who paid for the food) and she told me she also felt like she overpayed and the prices didn't seem add up. What a disappointment. We stepped in at lunch time around 12:45pm and there were only two tables been occupied. Should have known something was wrong since it was usually full house especially peak hours at lunch. We set down and ordered roast duck noodle soup with wonton, beef brisket with daikon and fook kin fried rice. Food came and I just found out NO condiments on table not even soy sauce and hot sauce. The only thing on table was white pepper. No fork or spoon on table the only thing was chopsticks. Lazy to ask a spoon for my fried rice. The daikon was inedible. Still raw HARD as rock again. This place was usually packed with Asian even in non peak hours. The new owner really should do something to stay up the business.
