The food here is amazing. It's a great place to eat On Balboa. The service is right on time. Very sweet. The ambience is loud but then again it is Friday night and busy, busy busy come on out and eat at Hinotez On Balboa ave!!!

I love this place! Tuesday is a great day to go if you do not want to wait for a table like on the weekend. I have to admit, I'm sad they removed the potato croquettes from the menu. Ham croquettes is not the same, but still yummy. I LOVE the tempura fried avocado. It may have a bit of a kick with spice, but full of flavor. It's like fireworks in the mouth. I noticed today that they have 2 tables that are the traditional Japanese height, the short ones. Someday, I'd love to sit there for a traditional seating experience. If you have never been here, you must go! Worth it!

Hinotez is still that comfort spot for me. It's the one restaurant I love coming to after a long week. The service is great and food is so consistently good that it almost washes away the exhaustion from the week. I came by for some skewers, miso soup, some takowasa and just a drink. The restaurant was not too busy and not too loud so it was nice to be able to decompress. Will be coming back again soon. As usual LOL

I haven't been in here years and don't recall trying much but back then I was younger and everything was pricey for me and my young self's wallet lol. We came the other evening and I had such a good time! First off I like how it's in the outskirts of convoy so not too crowded. They have their own parking lot with ample parking. When you enter, the left side is the restaurant side and the right side will be the bar side but you can still order food items. This was my first time requesting the floor seating and it was a no nice! I'm short so comfy for me and my toddler. The table was the perfect height for him without having to use a booster. Also there was still space behind us so he could play or roam around for a bit and not bother other guests so I definitely want to sit here again! I believe they just have the two floor seating tho. They also have happy hour from Sunday through Thursday from 5-7pm and late evening from 11-12pm. It's been so long since I've been here that you order on your phone with the QR. Which was nice and the menu items typically had a photo reference so I liked that. They have a realllly big meh selection. I will say I guess because it's a QR now, they don't really wait on you so if you need them it can be a bit. But once you put the food order in it comes pretty quickly. Also we are all able to order on our own phones and they can be paid out separately (so a plus if you come in groups etc) or combined at the end and paid together. Which we paid together since it was a family meal. Overall all of the food was very good. I'm surprised at how good the ramen were we each got our own and I would come back for them. Spicy tuna roll was not spicy tho. Spicy tonkotsu ramen was so good and very spicy! The quail eggs tasted like quail eggs so kind of expensive when I can grill them at home but we came to the experience so it's ok. The beef was so soft and flavorful. I'm definitely coming back for the ramen lol. Just check your order if you can during happy hour. Luckily I need so I now the few hh items were not discounted which she corrected

Restaurant is a nice place for snacking and drinks. I liked the curry cause it's comforting, but nothing super special. I liked how the curry had ground meat in it, which made it flavorful!

10-19-2025 My son had just returned from his vacation the night before. We decided to come here for dinner on a Sunday. Just as the place opened for the evening, I was the first one of my party to walk in; right away, the musty smell didn't give me a good impression. Still, I kept an open mind. Ordered: -Edemame- steaming hot, we enjoyed it. -Salmon Roll HH- small, just tasted rice. -Yellowtail Roll HH- also tiny. -Gizzard- smoky, spouse liked it. -Chicken Heart- yummy snacks. -Pork Shiso- my most favorite of the 3 Yakitori. -Fried Gyoza- oily -Mushu Roll- not worth $19.95 -Peach Float- refreshing drink. Service: Cordial staff. However, after we finished with all the food the staff still didn't serve the Gyoza. We checked with a different server. It took 10min for our order to come out. Note: Prices on the menu I am posting are not updated. Don't think I will be returning.

Hinotez is an awesome Japanese restaurant on the eastern side of Kearny Mesa near the 163. They have a huge selection of yakitori, ramen, and rice dishes. I really like their fried gyoza, which they serve with a nice mustard. The spicy miso ramen is great too. They serve pitchers and large beers as well. They even have an interesting tempura selection, including mixed vegetables, sweet potato, and avocado. I highly recommend it! Just try to come later at night after the dinner rush--wait times can stretch to around an hour if you come at 5 or 6. Update: The yakitori is pretty solid as well. The eggplant, beef tongue, bacon-wrapped asparagus, chicken heart, and Brussels sprouts--all of them are great. If you go right after entering, there is a bar area and you can order there as well. It's nice to do yakitori with Sapporo in there.

I've been to Hinotez twice now with friends, and it's always a special experience on my San Diego trips. The most recent time, we came in around 7:15pm on a Friday and we're seated right away inside the bar. It's great that you can order food at tables in the bar side. We've dined on both sides of the restaurant. The whiskey highball drinks and yakitori are some of our favorites. I love the fresh lemon hi and the chicken cartilage and pork shiso. Everything is super flavorful and fresh, including the ramen and tempura. The bar can get noisy and packed as it gets later, so if you want a quieter dining experience, eat on their restaurant side. It's still fun to sit in the bar area, and staff were very friendly and attentive, even as the night got busy. We've never had trouble finding parking in their lot or getting seated within 0-15 minutes. Their menu is a bit pricey, so it's definitely a special occasion get together. For 3 people for drinks, entrees, and appetizers, the total came out to around 200$ including tip or 67$ per person.

I really love this place! They have their own little parking lot. Service is always fast and friendly. I love that you can order through your phone. Lots of seating inside. I always order a bunch of little side dishes and eat it with rice. The price isn't bad either!

    mentaiko udon

Expensive and good but not the best yakitori in town for sure. Good for big groups because they have lots of seating and easy to park. The service is great, staff is friendly. The best thing we ordered was the pork neck skewers with sesame salt. Then is the pork skewers with plum sauce. Udon was ok, would order again but not super. Gizzard was also just ok, just not well salted. Sushimo was good but didnt come with lemon

Food never disappoints here. Prices are about average. Lots of seating, they have their own parking lot. Open late which is a plus.

Honestly had such a wonderful experience, thank goodness I didn't read the bad reviews before coming here. Plenty of parking in their lot. Came for dinner. Place seemed full but we waited a few minutes and then were seated in the back area with the tatami. Absolutely beautiful, I love the tradition. Food you order on your phone (QR code on table), and drinks with the waitress. Drinks came quickly and everyone seemed to be open to help when i asked for something (napkins, more drinks, etc), i didn't have to only speak with my waitress. Food was salted and spiced wonderfully except the beef udon soup which was a bit salty so i added some hot water - problem solved. Overall a great experience for our first dinner in San Diego.

    Mentaiko udon

I was craving noodles and this was one of few places open late, and the menu had what I wanted. I was worried the negative yelp reviews would mean that the food was bad, but it was decent. The service was also great and I did not experience the bad smell other reviews mentioned, but I was also seated near the door rather than further back. It didn't seem dirty, rather than old and rundown. The food was good, but the portion was small so I would recommend ordering appetizers with the mentaiko udon. Not sure if other dishes are on par though, but it's nothing too crazy or awful either.

My step brother made reservations here for Thanksgiving. My partner is very gluten sensitive (Celiac's), and usually Asian restaurants are great with that. Is this known as a good place for GF people?

    Are they open for breakfast?

Not anymore :( So sad, because they had such a good Japanese breakfast.

There's indoor, outdoor, and bar seating. The service here was excellent. Everyone was super friendly and checked in on us and apologized for the wait. Interior of the restaurant is very cute - it's small and gives off a modern/charming Japanese cafe vibe with wooden accents. The food was AMAZINGGGG - my favorite was the Napolita pasta - I love the flavor of the tomato sauce they use for this pasta and the ham was amazing. I also highly enjoyed the omurice, which was the best I've had - it was so flavorful and egg was soft and creamy. The chicken karaage was very fresh and crispy on the outside. The mango shaved snow was also phenomenal - I love the mango puree they used on the shaved snow and the mangos were super sweet!! There's some street parking nearby right in front of restauraunt and within nearby neighborhoods. Highly recommend!!

We got the omurice which my husband ate so fast, it's on the sweeter side, the egg could've been a little more runny but it was still good overall. We got the karage chicken, it was very flavorful and the breading was light which I liked and it didn't taste too oily. The curry was super good, the meat was tender and the curry sauce itself had a little spicy kick in it but still super flavorful. Also we got that huge tuna mayo onigiri which was like super sized but it was $8 so yea. It had a lot of tuna and it was packed really well. I was so full but the dessert looked amazing. We tried the matcha latte it was good but tasted just like sugar and milk lol There is no parking, u have to find street parking and there's no cross walk so u basically gotta jay walk if u park on the other side. Also the place isn't that big so it's not great for big parties, maybe for a family of 6 is the most you can accommodate. There is bar seating and limited outdoor seating. The service was great tho, and it's such a cute spot.

This is one of the OG sushi spots in San Diego, and I've been coming here on and off for decades…read more It had been quite a few years since my last visit, though. With so many new sushi restaurants opening around town, it's a little out of the way for us, and honestly, I had almost forgotten about it. I'm so glad we decided to come back because it's every bit as good as I remembered. I made a reservation for the sushi bar, which is always my favorite place to sit at a traditional sushi restaurant. Instead of ordering my usual rolls, I decided to splurge on the Chef's Choice nigiri. I also asked the chef to serve each piece one at a time rather than bringing everything out at once. I love taking my time, enjoying each bite, and watching the chefs work, which is another reason I prefer sitting at the counter. The Chef's Choice was absolutely worth it. Every piece was incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared. My favorite was the aged toro, which had been aged for three months. It had such a rich, buttery flavor and completely melted in my mouth. My husband ordered a few specialty rolls, and he was very happy with both the quality and the generous portions. I also upgraded my regular miso soup to the clam miso soup, and I'm so glad I did. The broth was delicate and flavorful without being overly salty, and the clams added a wonderful sweetness. Even though I was already pretty full, I couldn't resist ordering three pieces of tempura after seeing them come out for another customer. I rarely order tempura in the U.S. because it's often heavily battered, when authentic Japanese tempura should be light, crisp, and delicate. If you've ever been to a dedicated tempura restaurant in Japan, you know exactly what I mean. This tempura was surprisingly close to what you'd find in Japan--light, airy, and perfectly crispy without feeling greasy. For dessert, we shared the green tea Basque cheesecake. It leaned a little on the dry side, but I still really enjoyed it because the matcha flavor was rich, bold, and not overly sweet. We also had a chance to chat with Akira-san behind the sushi bar, which made the evening even more enjoyable. The hospitality and attention to detail really reminded me why I've always loved this place. With so many trendy and expensive sushi restaurants in San Diego these days, this restaurant continues to stand the test of time. The quality of the fish is outstanding, the atmosphere is authentic, and I honestly think the prices are very reasonable for what you get. It's a classic for a reason, and I'll definitely be making the drive back more often.
