    Uni Pasta

This is a new up and coming place for Kaisen Don in San Diego. When I went, they were early in their soft opening phase. We arrived upon opening, and were able to snag some seats. I did observe that within 2 minutes of opening, the restaurant was at capacity and there was already a line outside the door. Our waiter took our orders quickly and we waited for our food. Unfortunately, I received my food 40 minutes later. My friend didn't receive his food until 15 minutes after I received mine. I had ordered the most expensive don, so I was surprised that mine had arrived first. Our server was friendly but could have been more attentive. He didn't refill our water until he finally arrived with our food. After we had downed our don, we had to wait for an additional 15 minutes for our uni pasta. My friend received his pasta first. For some reason, even though we ordered the same pasta, I had to wait another 10 minutes for mine to arrive. Waiting aside, the food was absolutely divine. This was the freshest seafood I have ever had. I got the Tokujo Kaisen Don and everything from the uni to the ebi to the negi-toro was phenomenal. I mixed the egg yolk and soy sauce into my fish as well. Every bite melted in my mouth and the broth that they included paired nicely. There were also some extras that you could sprinkle on top of your bowl, such as sesame seed and togarashi. I understand that this was a soft opening, and that they are still trying to work out the kinks of everything before their official grand opening. I think the food is amazing but so far, service is lacking.

I'm sorry to say, but this just didn't hit the spot for me... Don Maguro is allll over socials right now and has the wait to show for it. They specialize in kaisen bowls which are rice bowls topped with raw sashimi-grade seafood. We went for dinner on a weeknight and the wait was 1+ hour for a party of 2. It's a small shop and everyone wants a seat at the hottest spot in town. We got gyoza to start and the Negi-Toro Don. The gyoza was pretty standard- always a solid choice. The Negi-Toro Don was a bit underwhelming to me. It's a set served with a raw egg and a side of broth. Toppings included a mixture of tuna, scallop, squid, salmon, yellowtail, clam, and cucumber. I think I prefer kaisen bowls with bigger cuts of fish and a bit more flavor. While the seafood here was fresh, the way that they minced and mixed everything together wasn't my favorite. I got tired of the taste after a while. Another thing, I reallyyyy wish that the seaweed was crispy :(

We came here after seeing it all over TikTok, and my boyfriend and I knew we had to give it a try! We waited about 15 minutes and were seated around 6:15pm, so the wait wasn't too bad. We both ordered the negi-toro don, which came with an egg yolk and a side of miso soup with lemon slices. The fish was incredibly fresh and practically melted in my mouth! I also loved having the nori with each bite. It added the perfect touch to the dish. The restaurant was very clean, and the service was quick and welcoming. Thank you to Maylinh and the rest of the staff for taking such great care of us! We had a great first experience and would definitely come back again!

Paid by card. Don Maguro is located a plaza towards the end corner and offers a lot of plaza parking. I went on a Thursday at 4:30 pm with a part of 2, and had to wait about 15 min. with 4 people ahead of us. I got the Tokujo Kaisen Don, uni pasta, and fresh lemon sour. The Tokujo Kaisen Don was amazing!!! Uni pasta was good, but very little uni. The fresh lemon sour was ok. I would definitely recommend this place and go early! By the time we were done eating, there was a long line and the waitlist page was full. There is also a sign that warns items may run out.

Melts in your mouth, comforting, fresh and I'm already ready to eat here again! The wait the time we went yesterday Thurs 8/6/26 around 6:45pm was about 30-40 minutes. They have a table and a clipboard and awaiting list where you can put your names on there. There are plenty of outside seating area areas. The newest and perhaps the only legit Kaisen don restaurant in San Diego. When we were seated, I immediately noticed a very fishy smell in the restaurant, it was offsetting ngl. Nevertheless we ordered the Tokujo Kaisen Don, Uni Pasta, Curry Rice and three Asahi beers. Tokujo Kaisen Don with a side of soup: 10/10 it was just so perfect. The flavor, the portions. And really everything. The soul was hot and thankfully not lukewarm, perfect flavor and citrusy aftertaste. Loved! The fish was NOT fishy, the uni was delish and fresh. My friend and I shared since we both ate before we came and weren't too hungry. If you are hungry, I recommend ordering one just for yourself. Uni Pasta: 9/10 perfectly portioned. Definitely something you can share with 2 to 3 people or eat on your own depending on how hungry you are. The reason why I didn't give fit a 10 is because I felt like they could've added more Uni. The garlic flavor was perfect and I loved the roe. Curry rice: My guy friend ate it and he loved it. He said it was a 10 out of 10. Packed with flavor. I'm not a huge fan of curry really... so I did not try it. They have nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages. :) We ordered 3 Asahi's. Cheers * sips * ahhhhh yum! The interior of the restaurant itself is pretty small. A very clean and simple aesthetic. Currently, it's their soft opening so they don't have much selection on their menus right now, but I kind of like it because personally if I have too many options I get overwhelmed. However, I'm looking forward to see how they expand their menu. The service itself was very quick and the staff is very friendly. The CONS: The fishy smell of the restaurant as soon as we entered, also the seaweed wrap that comes with your food... They only give about 4 to 5 pieces but if you want more, you have to order more and pay a dollar each time. parking itself is pretty easy. It's in the shopping center near the target and there's ample parking so there shouldn't be any problems. I'm probably going back tonight to take my parents or sometime in the next week. It's so good here!

Tora Tora Sushi has been rebranded into this new concept featuring premium seafood bowls. Don Maguro is currently in a soft opening phase with limited hours between 4 and 9 pm. You must dine-in, and you also should write your party name on the waiting list next to the entrance upon arrival. At my first visit, I showed up around 7:30, and they had already closed the list because the items were sold out for the day. When I returned a few days later, I arrived five minutes after the opening, and there were just three parties seated ahead of me. There is only enough space for thirty diners between the tables and the countertops so you will likely encounter a wait during peak dinner hours. The soft opening menu featured three main bowls, six sides, and two drinks (Coke, beer). The selections will expand after the full grand opening next month. I picked the Gyoza as a starter that came as six pieces and a dipping sauce for $8. The size of the dumplings was small, however the pan-fried quality was very good. I also chose the Uni-Ikura Don which was a bowl of original negi-toro with uni and ikura. A bowl of broth and a raw egg were provided as sides. The serving vessel also contained white rice, four sheets of seaweed (nori), and a shishito leaf. For the price, the amount of rice should have filled the entire bowl as shown in the menu photo. It was barely half full and wasn't a good ratio to the amount of protein. The uni was creamy while the ikura provided bursts of salinity to the mix. I had no issues with the seafood quality. The service from the staff was polite and prompt. I look forward to seeing the expanded menu after the kitchen gets up to full speed. For now, I gave a four star rating for my dining experience at Don Maguro.

Note that this is a soft opening so I'm sure things will change when this place officially opens! But I will say that I didn't expect such a long wait especially on a Wednesday evening. It's in a plaza but parking can be a slightly tight due to other shops around. We signed up at around 6:40pm-ish but didn't get seated till 7:50pm. The place is pretty small so it makes sense of the long wait but I definitely didn't expect for that long of a wait especially for just two people. We eventually got seated inside and was able to order and everything. The menu is a bit limited but this is due to soft opening from what they mentioned. I got the bowl along with the beer and they were both very delicious, especially with the bowl having some fresh sashimi! Was very pleased with it but I didn't quite like the nori as it was very tasteless and somewhat dry too. And for the price of it, it was quite a lot in my opinion. I'd still want to come here again especially since there isn't a lot of premium Japanese bowl places out there in San Diego. But I'm really hoping they'll have more on the menu along with more sides and main dishes. But definitely come here before it opens so you don't have to wait as long as I did. And I do hope when they open they open during lunch hours too!

FYI: Everyone's just finding out about this place and the wait times can be long if you have a big party. We arrived at 4:30 pm (30 mins after their opening time) and waited an hour for a party of 3. Luckily target is right next door and we could hang out and browse in there. Food wise we ordered: Salmon curry fried rice: could have used more salmon pieces - 7/10 Gyoza: pretty standard didn't think it stood out much - 8/10 Uni pasta: AMAZING execution on this. Flavor was on point and noodles were nice and bouncy with a good chew - 11/10 Tokujo kaisendon: this was the middle set on the menu and while quite pricey it was incredibly filling. Quick tip on this, the broth on the side is really good at the end of the meal with your left over rice / fish pieces. This is how they did it in Japan but we were not instructed to do so here. Many patrons were just sipping the soup on the side. - 10/10 Overall I'd come back even if just for the uni pasta!!!

Fresh Japanese food that tasted authentic. The ingredients are high quality but the portion sizes were too small. We waited about 30-40mins since seating is limited inside but the plaza had other stores to help pass time. Staff were friendly and accommodating.

Reminded me of Japan!! Very fresh and flavors were there. We came during soft opening around 4:30 and there was already a wait. We had about 10 parties ahead of us and it took about 45 mins to be seated. When being seated the server was extremely nice and explained the menu. They do not have the full menu yet! The negi-toro was soo so fresh and loved all the different flavors in the bowl. Since they give so much meat, I honestly felt like I could have had more rice. The egg was yummy and they give 3 pieces of nori which I think is great! I didn't like the broth as much but I saw maybe adding the shrimp head to it would be better. The broth was a little too fishy for me. The restaurant itself is cute and on the smaller side. Cant wait to go back when they have the full menu!

It's been two days and I'm still dreaming on about this. We got there at 4pm and already was a wait, bobalicious is next door if ya want a beverage while you wait, because it's worth the wait! I came with three other people so was able to share the sides and all was good but if I were to come back would order the Uni pasta and takujo kaisen don. The takujo kaisen don was so good, I wasn't sure if I liked Uni and I'm converted.. everything tasted such high quality. Would go back again, but be ready to wait.

I got the Tokujo Kaisen Don, it certainly has fish that just melts nicely in your mouth. Overall, the experience making your own handrolls with the content is great. I actually really enjoyed the soup that came with it. The fish quality is great. We thankfully put our name down early and got in right at 4 pm opening but otherwise it's a going to be a long wait since they at best seat 25ish people inside. There's a really cool wall art on the left as you enter so kudos to the artist and the establishment for putting that in place!

Newest Japanese spot! They make Japanese seafood bowls and are currently in soft opening. The inside is pretty small, so there is a long waitlist outside. The actual bowls are soooo delicious. Depending on what bowl you get, you get the fish, a raw egg yolk, some clear broth soup, and rice underneath. It's is very filling and tastes like it's straight from Japan. The prices are pretty high but understandable because it's fresh fish!

Service: We were welcomed as soon as we arrived. Everyone was very nice and very attentive. We ordered 4 items: orange ginza roll, una don, inari and the annin dofu dessert Orange ginza: oh yeah!! I usually hesitate getting citrusy rolls because they end up tasting the same as any other place or the citrus part over powers everything, but this was unique and the flavors balanced each other out. Tempura was also nice and crispy. Also love that they used lemon zest(?). Would order again. Una don: Their sauce for this is SO good and the unagi was cooked perfectly. Would order again. Inari set. I LOVE tofu and you don't see inaris in SD. We were very happy with this. Would order again. Annin dofu - this one was unique. Very almond heavy (not a bad thing). This is the only item I wouldn't get again. The tofu was tasty but I think a lot was going on with this dessert. There was a lot of texture, flavors, and color Not sure if this is normal for this dessert lots going on. there were mochi bits, tofu, matcha sauce, granola, raisins, dried strawberries(?). Fun to look at and try but kind of a lot going on. Overall: Would definitely come back. I do hope they get more employees though because I can see this place getting packed and needing more staff!

We were still waiting for some friends so it wasn't a big deal! Multiple birthday parties going on, so the atmosphere was very alive with conversation. It was like one big family picnic in there. Initially, they could not find my reservation, but they found it and accommodated us with a table right away and even threw in a Halo Halo for my birthday. The hostess was really nice and jovial. Upon walking up to the door, we noticed the closed sign but there was some tables filled already. Asked the young man if they were open or had a private party, he didn't even realize the closed sign was still on. He asked if we had reservations, we did not then he told us to wait outside to be called on, there were tons of empty clean tables, but we didn't argue. As soon as we stepped outside, before I could sit down we got called right back in by the other lady to come inside. Okay. Weird quick game of musical chairs lol. She explained to us how it goes. Drinks on this side of the room. Food on that side. Check. First plate: garlic fried rice (Sinangag), fried eggs, longoniza, Filipino spaghetti, lechon, and a bowl of arroz caldo. Also grabbed two cups, one for water the other for what the waitress said was mango ice tea (spoiler alert: no mangoes were hurt in the process of making this ice tea). Second plate: watermelon and pineapple slices, menudo, kare kare, ube pancake. First the sinangag tasted like it's been left out too long even though it was just brought out. Lots of hard pieces of rice. I decided to not finish it. Next, the fried eggs and longaniza. Fried eggs felt too rubbery for maybe just me. And the longaniza didn't taste anything like longaniza. No spices no garlic. Just a basic sweet hot dog. Maybe I'm wrong and it's just a hot dog. I can say the Filipino spaghetti did taste somewhat like actual Filipino spaghetti, sweet. But not too sweet but also didn't see any hot dogs in there! Now the lechon. Tasted exactly like fried pork. That has zero spices and kinda been out for a while. The arroz caldo had some shreds of chicken I think but I had to fetch for it in the pot. Unfortunately there's no boiled eggs to add but you can add everything else to it like the fried garlic, spring onions lemon etc. Now the drinks. What's up with the non mango mango iced tea? It just tasted like iced tea and if I was told that id be okay. But I love mango drinks and was looking forward to it. The water is the only thing I could say I wasn't disappointed with and only if I didn't have to get it myself I guess would be the only downside lol. I did try to get a second plate. Consisted of some watermelon slices and pineapple slices, menudo and kare kare with white rice. The kare kare and menudo did look like what they were called and that is about it in comparison to what I've had in the past. The menudo had no tomato paste taste to it and was rather bland and the kare kare was also bland. Their kare kare sauce was very watery, missing the thick savory peanut buttery taste. And unfortunately, it was the watermelon slices that made me quit and lose my appetite. It had a weird rotten taste to it. I almost had to vomit. First I thought it was soaked in something maybe vinegar, or I dunno. But I just could not eat anything else. I hope today was just an off day and the food is better. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll ever come back or even recommend my friend or family to come eat here.

Our total came to $99 including tip, which felt expensive for what we received. The food was fine, but not memorable. The spicy tuna on crispy rice was probably the highlight of the meal, but overall the sushi didn't stand out enough to justify the price. I also found the menu both diverse and oddly limited. They offer bento boxes, udon, sushi, and sashimi, but there wasn't an option to order tempura à la carte or even as its own entrée. The only way to get tempura appeared to be by ordering an udon dish, which was disappointing. The biggest letdown was the El Diablo roll. Despite being described as spicy, I didn't find it spicy at all, and the flavors fell flat. The service was pleasant, and there wasn't anything objectively wrong with the experience. It just didn't leave me feeling like it was worth nearly $100 for lunch. I wouldn't return, especially with so many other sushi restaurants in San Diego offering better value and more memorable food.
