This place has a great all day happy hour on Sundays & late night. I like this place. The drinks are stiff, the food is fresh and served at the right temp. They have the best crab rangoon in town, at least that we've had. My problems with this place are the atmosphere & the pretentious & down right snobby staff and the loud music. We circumvent these by always sitting at the bar and always coming in on Sundays, no more late nights for us. The only positive staff experience I've had is with Chris the bartender. He's a good guy, smart, funny, knowledgeable behind the bar - if you don't know what you want, tell him what you like & he'll make you something. He's a young guy, but he's old school good people. If I could give it no stars I would. Currently sitting in the restaurant waiting for our check. I came here visiting from Napa, CA to visit family and we were discriminated against. When we arrived the hostess walked us to a room all the way in the back to seat us. The lights were off, tv was off and wasn't occupied. I immediately had a bad feeling like they were trying to keep people other than white in the back or out of sight. My sister complained and the hostess made an excuse an said, "I was just trying to seat the next server." The place was empty practically, there shouldn't be anyone sitting in a closed off room. Also me and my sister have worked in the service industry so we know how things work. Then we were seated still in the back by the bar. HORRIBLE experience and I will not be coming back to Nebraska. WANT TO GIVE 5 STARS, but.... service was slow. We had to remind the hostess of our presence 20 minutes in. On the plus side, the manager greeted us and comped our shishito pepper appetizer (delicious!) and salmon belly. The sashimi was incredible. His Szechuan scallops were perfectly medium rare. Solid experience. I have to say this was a little weird because service here is amazing. Never was my glass empty and there wasn't any point where I needed something that I did not receive. My only complaint is that the service was not very personable, it was like everyone was a serving robot haha. They must have a very specific service system here. The sushi we ordered was to die for! Absolutely great! We had ordered crab rangoons for an appetizer which I have to say were a little tiny for the price. We also ordered the Yin's chicken which we always order when coming here and I do have to say I was a little disappointed int the quality of the chicken this time around. I usually go for happy hour, or I use to. Me and the people I go with for some reason end up having stomach aches after we eat there, and my brother in law got very sick after eating there. I want to like this place but I get sick. The sushi rolls aren't anything fabulous and the rice never seems well prepared in their rolls. I also don't like the snotty attitudes. It feels like they feel we should be happy that they are letting us eat there, instead of them being happy that the customers are there. I'll be happy to eat there when they drop the snotty attitudes and prepare their rolls correctly. one compliment though. Not sure his name but there is a waiter there that always seems to be very happy and nice. We always hope he will be our waiter because he is very good at what he does. It gives me angst to give a review of this nature. My family and I have been coming to Hiro 88 for at least 10 years and have loved every experience. However, tonight's experience was forgettable. We were seated around 7:30p and had our water glasses filled...this was the first and last time we had anyone pour or even offer water or any refill for that matter. We ordered six appetizers which came out in about 15 to 20 minutes. The drink ordering was a mess as the waitress only spoke to one side of the table. Our drinks took almost 30 minutes - a combo of cocktails and soda. The meal itself took an hour to arrive. At first we thought it was because they were busy but the place had died down significantly. Additionally, we watched our sushi sit for 15 minutes while the rest of the entreed were being prepped. Our meals were not anything special and we watched several tables of similar size who were seated after us recieve thier food. The food was as expected but the service was abysmal. The timing between drinks, appetizers, and the entree was abysmal. The sushi was dried out by the time it arrived. Very dissappointed in what we consider a staple when we visit Omaha. read more

As has been said, "HANDS DOWN THE BEST SUSHI IN OMAHA"!! Not one for writing reviews but felt the need to comment after reading a review posted on this site earlier this year. Our family and friends have eating here for years and it remains our favorite place to go in Omaha. Have friends that say they don't like/eat sushi? Take them to Hiro's and they will leave loving sushi and wanting more. I say this from personal experience having taken many a sushi virgin to Hiro's. As for the professionalism of the staff all I can say is they are a blast and will make your night. If you go make sure to ask for a table with Sam. Ask to see pictures of his son Maize or the latest pictures of the crew's vegas trip and you'll see what I mean. He makes our night. As for the comments on this site regarding John Horvatinovich. That is definitely not the person who has served me all this time. My take on your rant is that you took a forum to spread helpful information and turned it into a chance to take out your personal dislike for this individual. It comes off as very small and petty. If you don't like the food fine say so, but your prolonged diatribe leaves me with the impression that the only reason you wrote the review was because you didn't get your way that night. Just divine. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely. From start to finish a fantastic experience. We ordered the large nigiri plate, the large sashimi plate and several rolls and a few extras like tobiko with quail egg and sea urchin. Every bite was delicious. The sashimi was rolled like little flowers. Beautiful presentation. And huge pieces too. The miso soup was delicate and flavorful. The staff was friendly and informed. I like when everyone at the front desk greets you with smiles and laughter and makes you feel like they've been waiting for you to arrive so the party can begin. They do that here. Our waitress gave info on items not on the menu and when I asked about a specific dish she complimented me on my knowledge of Japanese food, commented that it was a traditional dish and recommended where I might find it in Omaha. I don't know that much but she made me feel great. We spent about $160 for 3. We didn't have alcohol. Just yummy green tea with toasted barley. ( gen maichai). Would never go back to this location. Went to Hiro 88 on a Saturday night around 5:00 pm, and not only had bad service from our server but also the manager and had to refuse sashimi. Ordered: Crab Rangoon; Firecracker Roll; Las Vegas Roll; Washabi Stinger; Fatty Tuna Sashimi; White Tuna and Kung Pao Chicken. Had to refuse the Fatty Tuna due to the extremely bad flavor, that I couldn't get out of my mouth quick enough. Server couldn't seem to remember anything. Forgot that she delivered the crab Rangoon to our table and asked if we ever received it. Asked twice for a glass for my beer and finally had to go to the bar myself. Not only did we receive a wine glass that had an extremely large chunk of glass missing from it, we also received our sushi on a chipped platter. I'm thinking it's time someone looks at the quality control of their dinner wear. Not sure why they think it's a good idea to have 7 of their servers folding napkins in the dinning room. Thinking this is something that should be done behind the scenes, and really, do you really need 7 employees folding napkins. We were there at 5:00 on a Saturday and were the only ones in the restaurant. We've been to Hiro several times in the past, although it has probably been a year since the last time we were at this location. All of the sushi and even the Kung Pao Chicken was very bland. I had to ask for a chili sauce to give the Kung Pao Chicken any flavor. When we spoke with the Manager regarding the fatty tuna sashimi that had such a bad taste and the bland flavor of the sushi, he seemed too involved in making sure the dinner plates were even on each table to even care and couldn't understand why we were refusing it. From that point on he wouldn't even look at us. When we commented at the front desk about the bad service from the manager the hostesses laughed and nodded their heads. After paying the $115.00 bill and asking the hostesses at the front desk who the owner or general manager was they didn't know, but gave us a business card instead, we ended up heading to Blue Sushi for some excellent sushi and dessert. I eat vegan and this place does have a few rolls for me :) Tempura asparagus roll is great as well as a plain avocado roll or veggie roll. They will substitute, exclude change everything in the rolls in my experience. I also had the tofu appetizer which was a bit too big to be called "bite-sized". Kinda difficult to eat those. They have EXCELLENT cocktails! I had a mango coconut mojito (i'm pretty sure that's what it was) and it was to die for. My fiance has had the peanut butter chicken every time we've gone and calls it "The best chicken I've ever had". He was skeptical of peanut butter on meat, but requests to come back to this restaurant just for that chicken. read more

I love Hiro and definitely prefer it over Blue. I've eaten at both Hiro locations in Omaha and recently at the Lincoln location as well. Always great service and of course an excellent menu at all locations. The Hiro Crunch Roll and the Firecracker Roll just might be my favorite items on the menu, but I've truly never had anything here that I DIDN'T like! They also have a full grill menu for those who don't like or are apprehensive to try raw fish. Also the west Omaha/129th St. location offers happy hour pricing on takeout all day on Sundays and during their late night happy hour. Another reason I prefer it over Blue. I get sushi takeout for CHEAP at least once a month from here! read more

As far as the sushi goes this is the best in Omaha. I've had various rolls and they were all good. My wife likes the Yins chicken. Why two stars? The last two times we've been here the server forgot our salad. The first time the server completely forgot until we got a few bites into the entree. At that point we just decided to skip the salad. Aside from an apology nothing was done. No biggie everyone makes mistakes. Now last night the same thing happened. We received our entrees and my wife asked about the salad. It was promptly brought over, but typically this should be served before the entree. Lastly I didn't like the response from I'm guessing an owner to the 12/13/16 review. Mr. owner your sign in the bathroom says employees must wash hands. Just because an employee only changes a paper towel roll does not excuse him from washing his hands. Come on! When I had a private birthday party in the private room, they began cleaning our table to prepare for the next party, but they made sure we paid our $800 tab. I think I like this place the best. It's better than Blue and Sakura. The restaurant is nicely decorated, clean and very chic. The service was excellent and so was the food. I tried their 3 items bento: tuna sashimi (fresh and melts in your mouth), spicy tuna roll (very good and has crunchy dough in the middle), seaweed salad (delish). I was a bit amazed that this sushi restaurant also serves Chinese food -a little strange since you don't see this in California, ever. We had a very nice experience here. Neither of us is into sushi, so we stuck with the Chinese menu and were very pleased with the Sweet & Sour Chicken and the Peanut Butter Chicken. The waiter was fantastic-- super-friendly, kept the drinks and water filled. The place was crazy busy (Friday night), but we had no trouble getting seated (the reservation was critical, I'm told) and the food came out pretty quick. Glad we visited! read more

I LOVE IT~! WOW service + upscale + yummy food + great drinks! This place is HOT. I ordered Margarita on rocks with no salt, but somehow maybe it was because the noisiness, the server brought me Mojito which tasted awesome, so I actually didn't mind, but ordered Tequila with a splash of Sprite on rocks with lemon later, and the server brought me exactly what I wanted. As for sashimi, me and my husband are sushi epicures, the salmon and the surf clams were foogasm quality, plus the crab cake with the salad was pretty impressive. My husband wanted to give me a "Birthday" surprise, but I told the server Amy that it was our Anniversary which was also true, she then brought us a gorgeous and crazily rich chocolate cake... I was so happy, that's why I left a note to her to say THANK YOU and explained it was our celebration night for Birthday/Anniversary/Thanksgiving after my husband got deployed in desert for 5 weeks and 3 days.. I've eaten here many times over the years. The best sushi I've ever eaten was had here. That was then. I can't express how disappointed I was with meal yesterday. One of the highlights is usually the rice. And it should be; if the rice is bad the sushi will be worse. The rice this day was bad. Real bad. Uncle Ben's, bland as newspaper bad. All of the fish tasted watered down, like it was recently thawed from a conventional fridge. I found bones in the salmon. There was no variety. The server made the bare minimum of visits to our table. I would have rather saved the fifty bucks and eaten at Chipotle. Hopefully they'll be able to recover, since when they're on their game they're the best in town. But for now go to Sushi Japan. read more

Had a group of 6 on a Sunday evening for dinner. Restaurant wad less than half full. Waited 45 minutes for a round of drinks, half of which were completely incorrect. Made an old fashioned with a lemon zest. Giving a 3 because the food was good and the waiter was very apologetic and comped our drinks. It took 3 rounds to get drinks straight. (1 bourbon on ice, 1 bulleit and 7, 1 vodka with soda w/ lime, 1 jack and coke, 1 old fashioned and an ice tea. We got 2 whiskey on ice, some wonky lemon old fashioned, tea with no ice, jack and coke, and vodka soda.) The bar was completely overwhelmed and unprepared. Don't go here for cocktails. My friend and I used a groupon and enjoyed a very good dinner. The shrimp fried rice was the best we'd ever had, and the General's Shrimp was pretty tasty too. The hot and sour soup wasn't very hot which makes it just mediocre in my book. Fortunately it came with the meal. My only issue is the food is overpriced for what you get. i lived in asia for many years-- and heard this place was good.WRONG--bad sushi, way way way too much cream cheese in the philly roll, I was not able to eat it after one bite since it was 75% cream cheese. I got the fried dumpling, which were okay but the price for 6 tiny fried dumpling was $7.50! So these tiny little things were more than a dollar each? I would expect at least 8 for that price.Service was good, and I could see how people who've never experience good sushi would think it's "the best"--obviously thrown off by the lounge atmosphere and fancy decor. Good quality with real sushi chefs and simple, well done sushi. The interior reminds me of some very high end establishments in NYC. The rolls are not overly-Americanized (fried/sauced) aimed toward beer-gutted Midwesterners, rather simple and elegant sans obnoxious amounts of sauces. I have been a "semi"!regular of Hiro 88 Sushi on Maple Dr. The food had been consistently good, the service warm and friendly and the atmosphere second to none. Last night I retuned for the first time in months.. I'm not certain if management changed but I was surprised and disappointed in the service (lack of attentiveness) the atmosphere which has gone downhill and unfriendly and unreasonable management. Specifically, a small detail..I had asked for lemon to add a little zest to the food. On receipt of the bill I was surprised to see a $4 dollar charge for the lemon. I politely asked for the manager who refused to adjust the bill. I want to make it clear that it was not the $4 that upset me, it was the way the manager/ owner Denis handled my complaint. He stood his ground saying that was management policy. Hmm was I expecting too much? It would seem that management would apologetically remove the charge to maintain goodwill. My opinion? an Ok place but bad management attitude. You won't see me or my friends nor colleagues back. This miserable attitude ruined my evening .. don't let it do the same to you? read more

In my opinion, Hiro has the best sushi in town. Granted, we're talking Omaha here, not some coastal big city, but even with that said their food is definitely head and shoulders above the local alternatives and could compete respectably in larger metros. Hiro is our go-to spot for girls night out happy hour - we usually stick around longer and order off both the happy hour and regular menu - but it's a good excuse to get everyone out. And with our diverse group of non-fish eaters (red meat or chicken, please), a vegan, some sushi newbies, and a few more adventurous types (count me in!) we can all walk away satisfied by a trip to Hiro. The ambience is great, the staff is friendly (remember to take care of your server), the food is fresh and delicious, and the prices are reasonable - what more could you ask for? read more

Having waitressed in the past, I pay attention to the service the most when I go out. At Hiro, it was impeccable. Samiel, our waiter, was fantastic. He was personable, but professional, and extremely quick. He took care of my boyfriend and I, and the other wait staff were attentive as well when it came to clearing plates and getting water refills. The food was well plated and classy looking, and well priced; Delicious too of course. Very rarely do I go out to eat and have such an enjoyable experience. I never complain when I don't, but when it's as good as this, I feel compelled to write a review. I tend to try each resturaunt in Omaha at least once, meaning I rarely return to the same one I've dined at before. Best place in town for good sushi. Reverse happy hour is a great time but you need to get there a little early or you will be standing around for a while. My favorite rolls are the West Coast Roll, and if you are feeling spendy the Wasabi Stinger. Get the beef tips for an appetizer! Salmon Nagiri is always a solid choice. They have a great selection of nice Sake. Service is always top notch! Most people in Omaha will tell you to go to Blue Sushi, those people are not your real friends. read more

I went to lunch there and had 30 minutes. I was in and out in that exact time frame with a great experience and a prompt and kind server. I ordered a glass of wine and peanut butter chicken. Served with a good sized side salad and sticky rice. Soooo good. I saw so many other items I wanted to try that I'm going back tomorrow.
