Hallelujah! I have finally been to Hiro Sushi! My cousins and other family members have been going here for YEARS - I have been hearing about the great All-You-Can-Eat sushi dinners here for YEARS! I have wanted to come here for YEARS! What hype eh? But I wasn't disappointed. Certainly not in value. And since I was always a little skeptical of "great" sushi in Tahoe and therefore had reasonably low expectations - I wasn't disappointed. No it's not the best sushi I've ever had. The fish isn't the freshest but it's pretty darn good (I'm a little bit of a sushi snob too.) The rolls are very creative and incredibly tasty. But it's the All-You-Can-Eat deal that's really got the pull. Combine that with honestly - a fun atmosphere and I'm so coming back here! Perhaps I'll ruin it for everyone here but it seems 3-day weekends are the time to come. We went on Sunday night of Labor Day weekend - granted we showed up at 5pm, but our party of 4 immediately got a spot at the bar. By the time we left at 6pm, most of the bar was full (except for our now-vacant 4 spots!) I'll admit I was a little unsure what to think when I didn't see a single Asian person working behind the sushi bar - but my cousin mentioned that 2 of the 3 guys have been there forever. And after a few of the first rolls came out - I wasn't complaining. The salmon was great, the yellowtail also. The maguro (tuna) I wasn't as impressed with. The rolls were the best! I can't for the life of me remember the name of my favorite roll - it was snapper with serranos and then tempura-ed. GET IT. It was YUMMYYUMMY! And I don't like snapper OR spicy peppers! For the best/freshest sushi ever - don't look to Lake Tahoe. For good sushi and creative fun rolls for a spectacular value in a fun, friendly place - go to Hiro's. For some reason, I could have sworn I wrote a review of Hiro's last year. Oh well. The place was better then. On a recent vacay to beautiful Lake Tahoe, my SO and I came to Hiro for AYCE. During the week and early in the evening, around 6pm, so the crowds hadn't hit yet... if there were going to be any that night. A girl behind the sushi bar was our chef and two other guys - not your typical Asian sushi rollers - prepared items for the other diners. I will say my favorite roll there of all we tried had to be the one with smoked trout. Maybe they get the fish right out of Lake Tahoe (which they could since trout and rainbow trout swim there prevalently). All others, and we tried A LOT since it was AYCE (we went on a long-@ss hike that day, ok?!), were bland, sloppily assembled and generally fried in tempura. Why is that necessary to fry all the rolls?! Our sushi chef and other staff members we encountered that night treated us well, refilled our water often and made the experience somewhat better. The next night, however, we were done with our hike early and wanted to hit a happy hour somewhere. Ended up driving by Hiro's again and saw their Happy Hour sign outside. Sooo, looking to get the party started, we went inside and had a seat at the bar - separate from the sushi bar. A quite curt waitress/bartender handed us the happy hour menu, which in the corner listed some adult beverage shots, and the rest contained sushi. We told her we were only interested in drinking and asked whether there were well drinks or wine or beer included in their Happy Hour. Her response, "Uh, like I said, happy hour shots are on the menu right there," prompted us to leave immediately. See ya never Hiros. read more

Ordered some basic rolls, salmon and spicy tuna, and it was difficult to eat. The tuna roll had a weird color and smell to it, plus the flavor was off like it was canned. The salmon roll had a weird texture and brown patches throughout. Wasabi looked like a spoonful of guacamole (and tasted almost as such) and ginger looked like sliced carrots and had almost no flavor. Threw away half the meal. read more

I am really happy with my experience here. It's got a fun ambiance and the service is friendly. I ordered some happy hour rolls of soft shell crab and tempura spring with a small cold nigori sake. All delicious. I can see that it could get busy here and as a Tahoe local I have experienced when the restaurants get overloaded during busy times so take that into consideration when you go out here during busy season. They do their best but can get spread thin on staff. Overall I'm happy! read more

Avoid at all costs. Waitress seemed like she didnt want me there. Seemed to avoid me at all costs. Food was absolutely horrible. Drive 2 minutes down the street to Safeway instead if you want edible sushi. The rolls were tiny, flimsy, had barely any fish meat at all, and to top it all off, severely overpriced. We enjoyed this little sushi restaurant in Kings Beach Lake Tahoe area. There is outside dining with table service after you order at a small outdoor window. The fish was fresh and well presented. The hot sake we enjoyed was perfect for the cool evening temperatures. read more

Update!!!! My most recent visit at Hiro Sushi was AWESOME and I am extremely happy with the food and service. The rice was cooked and seasoned just the way I like it. Every single roll and nigiri I ordered was fresh. No "fishy" taste and the flavors gave me foodgasms galore! Just a tip for the newbies: the All You Can Eat deal works on BOTH sides of the laminated menu in front of you. I noticed some of the patrons were ordering only from one side of the menu page because they didn't think the nigiris were included. Everything on both sides of the laminated menu on the bar is included. That's why I ordered a lot of unagi nigiri because I can't gorge on those elsewhere without coughing up some serious $$$$. I scarfed down several rolls of the Chef's Special #2 (Halibut) and I really digged the #4 Hawaiian (tuna-mango roll). They must have read my past review because my Halibut Special came out really fast each time I ordered it. I also noticed that they served more meat with our sushi. Loverboy and I inhaled about five of the #2 and three of the #4 specials. The fish to rice ratio was PERFECT!!! All the rolls and nigiri we got had a healthy dose of meat. My unagi nigiris all had big chunks of tender eel, which made my mouth and belly extremely satisfied. Loverboy's maguro nigiri also had big blocks of tuna wedged on top of the rice. I also really enjoyed the Captain Crunch special. It's basically spicy tuna served on top of a crispy nugget of sushi rice. It reminded me of the Tom and Jerry roll that we buy from Sushi Heaven in Carmel. Hiro (the owner) was at the sushi bar and he is the friendliest sushi chef ever. He was pretty funny too and joked with everyone at the bar. He even made a special ordered chicken roll for one of the patrons. We really tried to challenge Hiro at his All You Can Eat bar...sadly he won. Even after we did the Kobayashi Shake, our distended bellies couldn't take any more food. read more

I try to be very understanding person in many circumstances. But this time, I lost it. We ordered sashimi dinner that comes with a bowl of rice. Not only the sashimi pieces were almost like left over or scraps, also the bowl of rice was not cooked well or left over from last night. It smelled bad and tasted awful and very hard to chew. We asked the server politely if they have fresh rice but she brought back exact same bowl of rice. The rolls and appetizers were also so so. The short: Pretty attentive service but the sushi quality is average at best. There is MUCH better food in the Tahoe area for your money. The story: We were looking for a nice restaurant on New Year's eve and out of the 7+ restaurants we called, Hiro's was the only place that wasn't completely booked (this should have been a red flag, in retrospect). We walked in and were greeted by the waitress at the bar and were given a table immediately. The waitress was very attentive and gave us a paper to mark our order on which made the process easy. Unfortunately, the quality of the food was questionable and the fish was not very fresh. A lot of the rolls were completely drowned in sauce. All of our cups and drinks had a soapy aftertaste as if they hadn't been washed well. When I mentioned this to the waitress and asked for a replacement water she took it away and said "I could get you another one but the cups go through the same dishwashing process so it would be the same" and walked away. Well, first and last time for us. Very complacent sushi chefs, and staff in general. We came here on a Sunday, food was at best mediocre and service very slow. You just don't feel appreciated as a customer. You feel you are being treated as if they doing you a favor to make you food. There are much better places in Truckee. Its definitely my favorite sushi place in Tahoe. The happy hour is a good time to go for 1/2 off specials on some items. Its definitely a younger crowd and you get a lot of the types trying to be as "uber-hip" as possible, but when you have good sushi in your chopsticks, its all good. read more

Sit at the bar. Don't go to a sushi restaurant if you have seafood allergy. I've eaten at Hiro many times. No one believes me when I tell them about my favorite sushi place in the area. So I take them there. We love it! Service is always spot on. The chefs are on top it! The sushi fresh and delicious. What can I say, I recommend Hiro to anyone craving deliciousness! OMG what happened!? My boyfriend and I ate here tonight and the food was absolutely terrible. I have been eating here for over 15 years and it was definitely not the same tonight. Everything tasted very fishy and old, made poorly without care, baked mussels had no scallions or tobiko as usual. Customer service was awkward as she would just start to talk over us mid-conversation and interrupt. We both got a stomach ache tonight after eating here and usually I have a stomach of steel, thats when we know not to come back. I tried to re-visit even though the owner Hiro would not greet me after coming here for over 15 years bc I liked the food enough to look past it. Heard good things about this place, open at 5 every day, stopped by at 5:30 and it was closed. No sign saying it was slow season or any indication of special hours. No sign of any employees getting ready, just closed. Definitely disappointed. read more

Amazing place with surprisingly great sushi. They offer an all you can out option as well as a happy hour option. They got 5-7pm happy hour. We came 6:45 pm and were asked if we want to do happy hour. We did. After we finished, the check came out, and everything were billed with regular price. We came in on a Wednesday night and at first we were the only ones there. The service was okay, the server barely spoke to us just bare minimum. We ordered all our sushi at once and all but one came. We finished our sushi and we're still waiting on our #10. The server asked us if she can help us because we were just sitting there and I told her we were waiting on one more roll and she rolled her eyes and said it's coming. If you like sushi DO NOT EAT HERE! I was there last night with my two kids we waited for more than 30 minutes to get our sushi. A party that was there before us was almost done eating by the time we got our order. I asked our waitress when our food was coming and she said she would check. Another 10 minutes passed before we got anything. My kids were STARVING and when she FINALLY brought our sushi she forgot part of the order. No apologies at all for the wait. The sushi itself was mediocre at best. The spiciest sushi the so called "Nuclear Roll" was barely spicy. Couldn't have been more disappointed. The couple next to us got the soft shell crab and had to send it back because it was cold. Their order was also wrong when the waitress brought it and had to take it back to the kitchen to fix it. If you know anything about sushi.... STAY.AWAY.FROM.HERE. The owner should be ashamed of himself...taking advantage of people who don't know any better. He serves mediocre food because he can and the customers who actually like this place, don't have a clue what good quality sushi is. Spicy Tuna...is supposed to be spicy! The chicken teriyaki plate was seriously dry and BURNT! And they charge over $20 for these teriyaki plates! Please! You are NOT some high end restaurant...your food is bad. To top it all off...we waited longer than normal for 2 kids teriyaki bowls, 2 teriyaki plates and 3 rolls of sushi. For a place that was not at all busy=FAIL. The menu has an ok selection of rolls, but that is as good as it gets. You get one star for the descriptive menu. Too bad once the food is served, a huge disappointment is all you get. Ive been eating at Hiro for about 10 years and im sorry to see its decline. The sushi is still very good, Nigiri is sliced VERY thin now which it never used to be. DO NOT suggest sitting at the all you can eat bar unless you feel like begging for your sushi. always did the 1 hour all you can eat. last time I timed service TWO SERVINGS IN 29 MINUTES. Let's start. When you walk in your greeted fairly well. If you want all you can eat (29.99) you HAVE to be seated at the bar. Once you are seated at the bar you are only allowed to order ONE item at a time. You have to ask the waiter whenever u want a refill on any drink or else they will just walk by you. The sushi chefs are pretty slow at making the sushi, I've been to many sushi places and noticed how slow they were. It's almost like they could care less. Overall the quality for the sushi, the customer service, and the overall price (with them adding 18 percent in your check for tip) is definitely not worth it. I've been going to Hiro Sushi for 14 years and I am shocked at the negative reviews I've been reading! I've been to every Sushi restaurant on the North Shore and nothing even comes close, not even close! Hiro's is the best sushi on North Shore (including Truckee). Period! Each time I eat AYCE I walk (waddle) away happy and content, though mostly I eat at the front bar for the evening happy hour. If you know anything about sushi, stay the hell away from this place! On the other hand, if all you want is your deep fried spicy mayonnaise roll, then you may be okay here. I usually go to the south side of Tahoe and go to Sushi Pier in Stateline for my fix -- they have a good selection of well-cut nigiri, nice fishy rolls, and no time limits or restrictions on where you can sit or how you can order to get the all-you-can-eat. This time I was on the north lake and made the mistake of going to Hiros. While we weren't kicked out at the conclusion of our hour, it was still unwelcome pressure. Also, I prefer to write down my sizable and diverse orders and let the chefs go to work without forcing them (or me) to memorize everything I want. It makes everything simpler, but nooo, Hiro doesn't allow that. You might eat too much if you do! As to the sushi itself -- the nigiri was cut paper-thin and put on giant balls of rice. I'm a very seasoned sushi diner. I came here alone at 7pm and was seated at a table by the bar. The waitress said she would bring me a menu, but never showed. Eventually got a menu from the bartender who said he'd return with a pen so I fill out my order. He never returned but left a pen on the bar without a word. I took the pen and filled out my order and left it with the menu on the bar in front of the bartender along with a request for a cup of tea. He acknowledged the tea but left my order on the bar for 5 minutes. That was nothing however compared to the 45 minutes (!) they took to bring my 3 sushi rolls. Nothing fancy, from the Happy Hour menu. I said that "You forgot about me when I flagged down the bartender for another cup of tea, but he didn't respond." When the bartender finally came with my order, I said, "This took 45 minutes." He again did not respond. The food was okay. The only thing timely was when the leader brought my check. I again said that it took 45 minutes and he just shrugged it off saying that they get busy. He didn't note that others who were seated after me had already received their food well before mine. read more

For some reason, sushi after a full day of snowboarding is just heaven. My friend and I were checking out places to eat after a day out at NorthStar, and we drove by Hiro Sushi. Though Yelp gives it 3 stars, we decided to check it out anyway. It was all you can eat sushi for $25 each. MAN it's definitely worth it for all you can eat. We both tried so many things. I wish I could remember the names. All I can remember is that I ate a lot and everything was good. Service was excellent and the hot sake with plum wine was a great compliment to our dinner. I am typically very wary of sushi joints. The fact that I tried one so far from the ocean is a HUGE leap for me. I'm glad I did. The most difficult aspect of our most recent visit was the contrast between what we were served and seeing the platter of yumminess that Hiro and his buddies were served. We received three tablespoons of soggy seaweed salad for $6.00. The sushi was tasty but VERY small. Stingy. And then just down the bar comes this gorgeous platter of sushi for Hiro. I'm afraid they got it backwards. Customer is king!?!?! Beer was cold~ restaurant was HOT. Hiro was also sitting in front of the only air conditioner! Horrible service. We heard from the staff at Ferrari's Crown Resort (across the street) that the food was good at Hiro Sushi, but our experience was absolutely horrible. When we arrived, there were no available tables, but many bar spots (both at sushi bar and main bar). The waitress directed my family to sit at the main bar while we waited for a table so that we could get something to drink. The bartender ignored us for 5-10 minutes, so I flagged her attention to request a drink. Instead of greeting me or asking what I wanted, she immediately directed my family to vacate the seats at the bar (even though it is in the "waiting area") because my teenagers were under-age. When I protested that we had been instructed to sit there because we wanted drinks (soda for the teens), the bartender responded with verbal abuse. We choose to LEAVE. read more

Only do the all you can eat, ordering a la carte is not worth it! Let me start of by saying, the quality of the fish was excellent. However the service was horrible, mainly because they were understaffed. The food presentation was horrible as well, the chef claims to be a Japanese trained expert and blowfish expert... well the sushi rice was not packed tightly in the rolls. Major no no for sushi.
