Ankimo nigiri with Ponzu sauce (monkfish liver pate) & salmon skin handroll
    Elizabeth S.

I wanted sushi and my solicitous bf brought me to Hiro. He said it was "all-you-can-eat" which really never sounds good to me, but my boo knows how I like it. So my faith turned into confirmation. "All-you-can-eat" is reserved for the bar only. The sushi chefs are totally engaging and affable. Hiro is likely to greet you. The surrounding artwork of Japanese warriors is quite a stunner as a fan of photorealism. They may not have everything you want but only because they're all about fresh here. I reveled in my staple salmon skin handroll. Thick crispy skin was the expectation and delivery. The carrot, small cucumber, sushi rice and bits of green onion were perfect! I love ankimo (monk fish liver pate), and it arrived nigiri style drizzled with ponzu, sesame seeds and green onion. It was new to me and a favorable newbie. (Nothing gets me going like new concoctions.) The sake (salmon) sushi was flowing. My bf was in heaven. My saba (mackerel) was delish. I enjoyed bottomless green tea. We enjoyed unfiltered sake with our session of indulgence as well. There's no reason to get sushi elsewhere. Hiro can satiate that Tahoe sushi craving. We left with happy bellies!

To-go order during COVID. Great quality fish. Tekka roll, nuclear roll and unagi.

This is our go-to place after a day on the hill. Staff is super friendly, fish is fresh (never, ever got sick here), and the price is right, esp if you're hungry and hit them for AYCE (pre-COVID). Hiro is the master but his team is great as well. If you like spicy, try asking for his "nuclear sauce" to a roll...it's killer spicy oil that enhances the food. The Captain Crunch roll is a hidden gem - basically toasted rice with spicy tuna but the texture and flavor are one of a kind.

Chicken Teriyaki Bowl It somehow achieved to be more dry than Sahara desert.

I just lost faith in humanity when I took an order from here. I'm not even exaggerating here, it's the worst Asian restaurant in all my experiences. My total was $115 but it looked as if it's only a $50 order from say Sacramento. It didn't help that I tipped them $20 on a Togo order. If you're deciding if it's worth the risk despite the 3 star, I'm begging you, do not take the risk. My main problem with this place is they're charging like a high-tier Asian restaurant when their food serving, presentation and taste is garbage river. Below, you will see photos of the items I got so you can actually see what they look like. I didn't believe some of the reviews because a restaurant can't be that bad but it is. Also those pictures in the wall, I'm pretty sure it's when the owner was still a Japanese guy.

This Japanese restaurant serves fresh ingredients. The presentation of food is artistic. Price is everage for that kind of delicacies. The service is excellent. Definitely coming back. Highly recommended.

    Hot tea to start with.

It was my fiance's birthday, so we splurged for the ten course dinner, as I knew he'd enjoy it even though I knew I'd be bursting at the seams. The ten course will set you back $218/pp. They also offer a six course tasting menu and an à la carte menu. Every course was thoughtfully prepared, thoroughly explained and totally delicious! One of our favorites was the A4 Wagyu with fresh horseradish grated tableside. The amberjack from the Toyosu market in Tokyo was also top notch. 22% automatic service charge, but you can change it or ask them to take it off the bill. Christina was our main server and she was a joy, along with the rest of the staff. Would definitely recommend Smoke Door if you're in or visiting the Tahoe area. We loved it!

We dined at the bar for the 10 course and was such a fun experience. Greg was taking care of us and he was so personable and funny. Food - There were some new items like the tsukune, which is a familiar chicken meatball at yakitori restaurants. This was in our top favorites of the night. The meat is so succulent and flavorful! The shiso and ginger flavor was amazing. But, the lotus root really gave it texture which was a nice contrast. Seriously 100/10 Summer Squash - this was so lovely. The sauce was made out of sake lees!!! They said they are getting it from a local sake brewery in Oakland. The flavors were amazing and had an incredible sesame togarashi oil on top texturally so fun to enjoy with the squash blossom and pumpkin seed furikake 11/10! NOW the desserts! Kakigori which was yellow watermelon and pineapple with little black sesame mocha on top! Looks unassuming but when you take a bite it was so delicious and such a great palate cleanser. I wanted more.. 12/10 Our favorite of the night was the Rice cream sundae. They said it was rice with coconut milk, but had little wild Rice Krispie treats with SMOKED BUTTER like WHATTTTT?!? So so so f-ing delicious. And what can be better than that? A miso caramel drizzled on top!!! 1000/10 Everything from the cocktails, food, and service was amazing as always. We can't wait to return and try the à la carte menu.

They likely never put my name down for the reservation. We even offered to split our group into multiple tables since there were several empty tables available throughout the restaurant. Instead of trying to accommodate us, the staff continued taking phone orders and seating other families at those empty tables while my family was left standing there, feeling completely ignored. It was frustrating and disappointing to see available seating go to other guests while no effort was made to communicate with us or find a solution. A little acknowledgment and customer service would have gone a long way. They didn't even apologize. In the beginning I thought it was a language barrier but when I politely addressed my concerns they were extremely rude and had no desire to find a solution. Most of our party left due to the rude service. Only 6 of us stayed behind to eat. We thought the food was good. We paid for the bill in cash, only for the server to chase us outside and accuse us of shorting the cash. Either someone stole it or dropped it because we paid the full price plus tip. Since we didn't have any proof, we had no choice but to pay twice. Will never eat here or recommend again.

Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, and she did a great job walking us through the day's specials as well as some of her favorite picks. I started with the In Crowd cocktail and really enjoyed it. The coconut, basil, and bitters balanced beautifully with the gin, making for a super refreshing drink that felt especially perfect for spring or summer weather. We followed our server's advice and ordered four items, two larger plates and two starters, and everything was delicious. Here's the breakdown: Trout Dip: Fantastic smoky, fishy flavor in all the right ways, served with crostinis. The only small nitpick was that the crostinis were overdone for my taste and shattered loudly when bitten into. Grilled Prawns: Super meaty and seasoned and sauced perfectly, with a bed of slaw that balanced the dish nicely. Scallops: Seared to perfection and in an addicting red Thai curry sauce. I was intrigued by the combo of kimchi, grits, and curry and have to say that it somehow blends amazingly well. Lamb Chops: Cooked to a perfect medium rare, expertly seasoned, with little gaminess and a cooling yogurt sauce that really brought the dish together. All in all, it was a fantastic meal and easy to see why this place is such a favorite among both locals and tourists. The food, the drinks, and the service all come together to make this a great option for any occasion from a casual night out (us) to celebrating something memorable like a graduation (several were happening while we were there).

We were seated immediately on a Sunday at 6 pm. The restaurant was clean and has both indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered a house salad, sashimi and two rolls. Our meal also came with miso soup. The miso soup had a fair taste and was very light on the tofu, green onions and greens. The salad dressing also had a fair taste - nothing extraordinary. We ordered the nine piece sashimi. The salmon was fresh and tasty. The tuna was also fresh and tasty, but it had a green sauce on top that we both did not care for. The Hamachi was ice cold and tasteless. The best roll was a baked roll with crab and avocado and lobster on top. It was absolutely delicious. The Carnation roll was crab and avocado wrapped in tuna and salmon with tobiko and a tempura scallop on top of each cut roll. The roll itself was average, but the warm tempura scallop on top was delicious! The sauce was a spicy mayo and Unagi sauce. We did like the fact the rice was rolled thinner on the rolls.
