Restaurant review - oishi sushi in Carson City NV It's evacuation time! At the time of this writing the Hawk fire is going on and a group of us evacuees wanted some sushi in Carson City. Keep in mind, we were HUNGRY, as it had been a really hectic busy couple of days. Two options presented themselves, both in the same parking area, and Oishi was one of them. However, I had questions, So I called. Do they have soy wrap, since my wife doesn't eat nori? Yes. And, are they ADA compliant, as my wife has a ACL tear and is in a wheelchair? They said yes. And so we told our friends to head to Oishi and we would meet them there. Found out quickly the restaurant was baaaarely ADA compliant. It was Very, very narrow, and hard to navigate with a wheel chair. If there are people sitting in tables, everyone has to get up and move in order to get the chair around. So, just a little awkward, before we even get to the table. Which we finally get to. We ordered drinks at 5:40. Drained my tea at 6pm....and didn't get a refill till 6:17. A Buddy ordered cold sake at 5:40 as well.... but never got it. He Asked again at 6:17, and finally got it at 6:26. We turned in our food order slip at 5:50pm. First food to arrive was Miso soup at 6:05. Honestly one of the better miso soups I've had from places like this. Perfectly salted and seasoned. Green onion and a little kombu as well. I dig it. Bunch of apps got to the table at 6:21. First was Tempura tofu. Crispy crunchy hot tofu cube served with sweet chili sauce. Good stuff, though the tofu itself wasn't marinaded or anything. Still, not bad. Yakiton, stuffed with crab salad and sweet sauce on top. Big size, satisfying. Like a giant crab salad egg roll. Potsickers. Crispy crunchy edges but tender filling.... really nice. Crab ball was pretty great too! Like a giant crab salad meatball with toppings, and really crispy. Bunch of rolls got to the table at 6:30. Most were pretty great. However, my wife's Special rolls with soy paper still had not come out by 6:45. So I asked about them. They asked "ok, you know it's a dollar extra per roll right?" Told them yes.... didn't care....my wife couldn't eat nori. Five minutes later she got her soy paper rolls, at 6:50. Both of which she reported enjoying a lot. However, at 6:50 the table still hadn't gotten the nigiri. It was officially an hour after it had been ordered at this point and we were hungry! And then five minutes later, we got some of the nigiri, at 6:55. Got the rest around 7:05. Honestly? Kinda worth the wait. Nigiri had really thick pieces on top of well seasoned rice with sesame seeds on it. Some awkward cuts of fish present, torn edges and such, but we went late in the day so it's expected. Most was Very satisfying. Seared tuna and pepper tuna were two of my favorites, but the eel was very good as well. Everything was Served on wooden boats too, Honestly kinda fun. And the staff? Really nice. Little older lady, huge smile, really funny and friendly. Dessert was served at 7:20pm. While everyone was eating I asked their opinions. Well my friends who had been imbibing the "all you can drink hot sake with all you can eat" said they loved it. I, one of the only non drinkers there, also really liked the food, though the wait was a little bothersome. But honestly, our friends had a really good time, we all left full, all of what we got was pretty good, and I was left feeling that I'd like to go back. I've been to Oishi Sushi twice now, and while the food is decent, both visits had service/atmosphere issues that made it hard to enjoy my meal. On a previous visit, I was seated in the back of the restaurant, which I was fine with at first, until I realized that's also where staff eat. One employee sat down near me on his break and was loudly eating with his mouth open, shoveling food in with his chopsticks right in my line of sight. It was uncomfortable and honestly pretty gross, to the point that I asked to move tables. On my most recent visit, the service was again disappointing. After my drink was dropped off, my server basically disappeared -- no check‑ins, no options offered, and it took a long time to get anyone's attention for simple things like refills or the check, even though it wasn't that busy. The sushi itself is fine and the prices are reasonable, but between being seated next to an employee loudly eating his break meal and the consistently inattentive service, it's hard to relax and feel like a valued customer. With other sushi options in the area, I'd rather go somewhere that feels a bit more professional and attentive. read more

We came here because Sumi Sushi next door was full. The place is curiously organized with separate Chinese and sushi restaurants. The place is plainly decorated with soft music in the background. There was only 1 waiter serving both restaurants, and as a result, he was spread too thin. I had to find him to give him our sushi ordering form, ask for extra hot tea cups, and to check on our order. The prices are lower than most places I've been to. Our favorite place was closed due to a holiday, so we gave Oishi a try as a family friend speaks highly of the establishment. The sushi bar area is small, maybe 5-6 seats, so when they seat solo patrons in the middle, or not at the end, there's 2-3 seats. There are small tables around the edge of the dining area, and there is a shared table service with a restaurant next door; we were one table away from the drapes over the shared entry so it wasn't much of a hindrance during our visit. The service is attentive and they try to convey what they each roll/plate is as they are serving it although there is a slight language barrier. The quality of the nigiri was satisfactory not remarkably great though. The portion of fish to rice was generous. The rolls were well prepared but the menu had few rolls that don't have at least two of the following: crab mix, lemon, cilantro, tempura (something) so there's not a significant difference between the ingredients; every roll is a combo of another. The seaweed salad was extra "soupy" which is often off putting, they served it in flat dish making the slime less noticeable. We enjoyed the visit, but will likely opt for the cross town place when both are open. read more

All you can eat sushi for $30.99 (dinner price, weekend)! This is located downtown of Carson City and it's tucked away in the corner of the building; pretty much a hole in the wall. This restaurant is one block off the 395 corridor and shares a curtained wall with a Chinese place. It was clean and quiet inside with most tables filled. We shared three appetizers, Yakiton, Pot Stickers and Crab Balls. The crab balls were our favorite and the other two tasted better than the ones next door at Sumí Sushi, but even so the Yakitons are still by far the best at Sakura in Gardnerville. The sushi rolls were amazing and very tasty! The service was okay, but not amazing. For instance some intuitive things servers typically do, we had to specifically ask for such as "plates" or (after the sushi rolls were delivered, "can we please have some wasabi and ginger?" What an amazing experience! We arrived at 8:10 with a party of 7, knowing they closed at 9, and they still welcomed us in with no hesitation. We ordered the all-you-can-eat and ended up with over 15 rolls. Every single dish was delicious -- from the miso soup to the Lily Roll, the Donald Duck, and even the green tea ice cream, everything was a solid 10/10. Not one bad item on the table. What stood out just as much as the food was the atmosphere. The staff was happy, singing, and smiling the whole time. The music and overall vibe were amazing. Our last roll actually came out after closing, and instead of rushing us, they even asked if we wanted more sushi! We didn't, because we made sure to order enough upfront, but it was so kind and genuine of them. We finally left around 9:30, and instead of being upset we stayed a little past closing, the staff was still cheerful and welcoming. That kind of service is rare. I think it satisfies my fried food taste buds before I dig in to the raw stuff. I used to like dining in-person before they took away the option of ordering the Chinese food at the table inside Oishi from the adjacent restaurant. I like sushi, but my husband doesn't. It made it so much more convenient. Last time we dined in, he had to go next door to place the order and I believe it was given to him in a to-go container which he then sat at the table in the Oishi half to eat. It just seemed awkward and if we wanted to eat out of a to-go container then we probably would do it that way normally. Because of this, I now order my food to go instead of dining in person. I feel like they lose out on some additional purchases because we're not staying there to eat. I'm sure something must have happened to cause the change. I do LOVE the new menus though. You ever watched Indiana Jones and the temple of doom? And how he had to go down a sketchy tunnel in order to find the golden figure at the end and then escape before getting crushed by a giant boulder. Oishi sushi is like that Golden Figurine at the end of a tunnel, situated out of the way in Carson downtown this spot is very unassuming however after having sushi there twice I must say , it's better than the sushi joints in Reno, but that's just my preference. I'll have to be quick with this review because the service sure wasn't. I keep in mind that labor shortage is real so I'll give them somewhat of a pass. Our meal took about 2.5 hours so if you're looking for a buffet style where you can just grab, eat and go look elsewhere. For an all you can eat this place is very good. They don't cheap out on the fish or attempt to stretch out their rolls by putting a ton of rice. Everything is balanced. One constructive criticism for this establishment is to make their sushi rice better as I felt it was too closely resemble sticky rice rather than sushi rice. It was a bit dense and would compliment their already decent fish and topping combo even better. This place makes the best fried stuff. Some of their sushi rolls have crispy fried tempura fillings or crispy toppings. We were joking maybe we should try their Chinese restaurant (next door but connected) as we know Chinese food secretly deep fry their greasy but tasty dishes. They put a lot of mayo over the chicken which would be good, so you don't choke, if the chicken were too dry, but it's not. I never eat the salad. I would if they used something besides iceberg lettuce. They give me what I order, and I go just for the chicken. It gives you opportunity to have more rolls without getting too full off the first couple. I brought my mom here for Mother's Day with my brother and it was all of our first times here and we were all impressed. The food was great, the service was great, I will recommend Oishi sushi to everyone I know. I was a little skeptical getting sushi in Carson not gonna lie.... but was so pleasantly impressed. I happened to be playing an afternoon gig with my band in Carson City and figured it was time to drop by to check this place out for dinner after seeing positive reviews for it. I truly LOVE sushi and we all have our favorite places around the area that we've become accustomed to that serves us what we like, just how we like it, as well as our favorite sushi chefs that we always go to. But, I'll always try anyplace new and I've been to almost every sushi joint around. When I went in, there were still Covid restrictions in place. Capacity was limited, all the tables were socially distanced, all employees were wearing masks properly and there was only table seating...no seating at the sushi bar. I love sitting at the sushi bar so I can interact with my sushi chef, but my waiter was very attentive for my table service. Of course, I did the AYCE. Appetizers: Seafood Yakiton [Cream cheese wonton with seafood] 2 pcs These were significantly larger than any I've had around the area. The cream cheese and seafood filling were a great taste combination. The deep fried exterior was perfectly crunchy and not at all greasy. A+ rating! Crab Balls 3 pcs I'm NOT a fan of the fake Krab, that's why I never order rolls that include it, but I do happen to like it in Crab Balls. These were very tasty and deep fried just right. 2 different types of Mussels: Steamed and Baked. I got the limit of 2 orders of 3 pcs each. Both styles were delicious. Cooked perfectly...tender and juicy with great toppings on them. Long Rolls: It's been a little while since my visit, so I'm slightly embarrassed that I don't remember which rolls I ordered...just check out the pictures! Hand Roll: Lucky Roll [Cooked scallops, tempura shrimp] Great combination of flavors and prepared beautifully. Nigiri: Quail Egg Shooters (3) [Quail egg, tobiko, ponzu, hot sauce, green onion, lemon & celery stick] Standard preparation and done perfectly. Maguro, Pepper Tuna, Hamachi, Albacore, Unagi, Ebi, Saba, Smoked Salmon, Salmon. [2 pcs each] I like my salmon with a slice of jalapeno rather than the standard lemon slice. I think it cuts through and enhances the fattiness inherent in the salmon better than lemon. That's what I ordered, but it arrived with lemon. I told my waiter and he immediately had the sushi chef slice some jalapeno which I received promptly. The fish was cut beautifully...nice size slices of very tasty fish. Just a little more rice than I'm used to compared to my favorite place, but not a ridiculous amount that would overwhelm the delicate fish. I always have Miso Soup after I'm done eating sushi just before I have dessert. I come from English descent and my maternal Grandmother always finished her meal with a cup of hot tea. She said it aided in starting digestion. That's always stuck with me. I consider Miso as my "sushi equivalent" of hot tea after my meal. Dessert was Mango Mochi...my favorite!
