Lunch May 19 Driving back from OBX this seemed like a good place to stop and I wasn't disappointed. This is NOT a hipster, food to table - new wave place with a trendy NY chef. Its an older themed rustic cowboy like joint that serves good quality food! We pulled up and 4 people were waiting to get in from 2 different cars - good sign! They have a regular menu, but also have a lunch buffet - which I hear changes. What drew me here was the salad bar that came with the buffet. Fresh lettuce and trimmings and good dressing hit the spot after 3 days of seafood in OBX! This is not typical buffet type food. this day they had fried chicken, fried catfish, beef livers in onion gravy, creamed corn, and some cool crispy potatoes to name a few. Can you say WOW, this is a nice buffet offering with an order option. It was nice clean, and hot food constantly. The options were all Southern choices. Eastern style bbq, fried fish, shrimp, bbq ribs, all vegetable choices, chicken casserole, cobbler, bread pudding, hush puppies and beautiful salad bar that is refreshed every 10 or 15 minutes. These are the best tumbleweeds (onion rings) ever. Very clean. Great restrooms. Great service. Did I mention the tumbleweeds? They are great. You have to order them. The dinner buffet and salad bar was only $12. Salad bar was huge with tons of fresh toppings. The buffet was a southern boy's dream. I'm not much of a buffet goer. But the southern food served at this restaurant is awesome. I highly recommend the coleslaw, boiled cabbage, collard greens and sweet potato casserole. The collard greens were my absolute favorite. Chicken was also excellent and very moist. Desserts are also pretty good. Try the pumpkin crunch tarts. Would totally go there again. As others have noted there is a shortage of sit-down, full service restaurants in Williamston. I haven't had lunch or dinner at Hitch'n Post but have had their Sunday buffet on numerous occasions. I'm not sure of their reservation policy (if you need to have more than 5 people to get a reservation) but there is always a wait after Noon on Sundays (post-church). The buffet is pretty good and definitely the way to go (maybe the only way to go on Sunday as the other options are severely limited - chicken fingers and a burger might be all you can get). There's a good mix of meats & vegetables along with a big salad bar and desserts. The food is all pretty good and what you would expect for a southern buffet. Definitely the place to go for a Sunday afternoon lunch if you're in town. read more

We were to meet friends halfway between Kitty Hawk and Raleigh, and that landed us in Williamston. I have to say we were very pleased to have discovered the Hitch'n Post! The lunch buffet was more than adequate and was stocked with some of the best fried chicken and yam casserole that I've ever had. And those green beans ... incredible. Perfectly seasoned and had a wonderful smoky bacon flavor. And the chicken and dumplings ... mouthwatering! Make sure you try it all! Surprisingly busy for a Tuesday evening, although always a welcome site to see a parking lot NOT empty when pulling into a new place. Have been meaning to check this place out for a while and after reading a few reviews here thought it was about time. Very nice atmosphere, almost a Cracker Barrel feel without the store to navigate through to be seated. Very simple menu but plenty of variety. Be sure to check out the specials board. Prices were very reasonable and service was attentive. If other servers walked past your table they were sure to refill drinks and remove any finished dishes. read more

Party of two, visited on a Sunday about 6:30pm. We were promptly sat at a booth, and a server came over just a moment later. She didn't say hello or her name, just "what would you like to drink?". Service was fair for a Sunday evening, food took about 15 minutes, and we had a salad to start. We both ordered seafood: mine was the fried flounder and fried scallops, husband was the blackened shrimp and corn nuggets. Both were just ok, nothing to brag about. Check came to $50 after tip, including two entrees, a glass of wine and a beer. We might come back again, but it's not a must-do. read more

I travel with my job and I eat here when in the area. I REALLY like this restaurant and I would like to give 5 stars but the last time I went the service was TERRIBLE. My waitress and the all of the hostesses were very disappointing. This was a young group and very unprofessional. Two girls were dramatically putting their hair up in ponytails behind the counter. (Disgusting.)Clearly not interested in me standing there waiting to be seated. I stood for 5 minutes at least just to see when someone was going to acknowledge me. I was just in the restroom with one of the girls so I'm not sure why she just didn't do her hair in the restroom (?) but anyway. My waitress was so uninterested and inattentive I was starting to believe it was intentional. If I wasn't in the mood for a good steak and sweet potato I would have most definitely got up and left. This is one great restaurant with wonderful service! The food is always delicious and HoT! The Buffet is definitely a strong point but you can't go wrong when ordering off of the menu! The steak, chicken and seafood is the best around and then those Side Kicks! YUM YUM!! And if you're trying to stay on the healthy side of things, the SALAD BAR is for you!! After our State Tournament game @ Riverside High School, we were informed that the Hitch'n Post was a good place to eat. We arrived with a large party within an hour of closing. The staff was friendly and courteous. The service was outstanding and the food was delicious. The restaurant has a simple menu and a basic salad bar. Ok. So I pride myself in being very accurate in my personal opinion on reviews. This particular review deserves a note. My review of this restaurant is based on where it is located. Where it is located it is a SOLID 4. If you placed this same restaurant in a major city it would be a 3. Ok? So, given the location. Visited on a Wednesday evening about 6pm. Not very busy when I arrived but by the time I departed the restaurant was at least 50% full. I ordered the 10oz Ribeye MR, w/baked potato and substituted the salad bar for the house salad for an extra charge. They do have beer and wine. Ok, so standard lower level beer and "house" wine but where it is located I was surprised. Back to the food! The salad bar was well worth the extra charge. All ingredients were fresh and the bar itself was well maintained and clean. The waitstaff was pleasant and very attentive. The steak was cooked to order, potato hot, and bread steaming. Note: the steak was a standard quality steakhouse cut so don't expect a gourmet cut...but it was pretty good. The potato. Can a potato be the highlight of a meal? If so this would be it. Very well cooked. Not raw. Not old. They could improve by using ground pepper instead of the "pepper dust" that was available. But again. Not so bad. For the non-meat eaters. My daughter is a vegetarian and honestly I would had not thought this place had pasta but it does. Didn't try it but I do know that between the pasta and the salad bar she would leave happy. Final scoop? I have been driving by this location for over 20 years to the OBX and have listened to folks in the car whine about being hungry for most of those. Before you suffer through another drive to a "place that has good food" stop at this place....it has good food! read more

I would very recommend highly this place. Their house specialty was the Alamo Chicken and it was mouth watering! I had a garden salad and red skin mash potatoes equally as good. The service of the staff was excellent. The only downside, I was only passing through Williamston and can not eat here more often. read more

Was in town this week for business and stopped for dinner. Folks here are incredibly friendly. Had the salad bar was pretty fresh but nothing special. Had a burger with bacon and grilled onions. Cooked right but the bacon was soggy, not crips line it should be. Rating equals the experience. Average but better than a chain. read more

Stopped by on a Sunday morning for breakfast. Great service and delicious food!!!. Had the breakfast buffet which was excellent! The grits were creamy, the potatoes were crisp and had great seasoning, scrambled eggs were fluffy, biscuits were fresh and hot, bacon was crispy without being burnt, sausage patty was average, sausage links were "ok", coffee was fresh and hot.
