UPDATE: Have to add that since I've had a beard for the last year, HK Best Barbers is the go-to spot for me to get it trimmed/reshaped. Specifically, Pablo Laguna who is, for lack of a better word, a true artist. I've had beard trims where I live in DC as well as in London when I visit there and not only is Pablo the least expensive, he's also the absolute best! *Only review for a straight razor shave. I wanted to check out a "talked about" New York Barbershop. I found this spot with great reviews. Once I walked in, the owner was immediately chatting it up with me, as if we're best buds from back in the day. He walked me over to a "barber" who had just come in and was getting himself set up. After hearing the owner speak to the other barber, who already had a client, I knew I was with a different barber than the one I had initially chosen online. Once we started with the service, I already knew I was in for a short and rough shave. The hot towels were great, but that's the only positive. The lather was minimal, the shave was with short, choppy, and dry. I was hoping it would be over quick, but then he pulled out the electric trimmers.... And started cleaning up the lowest part of my neck.... And slicing my neck.... And irritating my neck.... I have never felt stinging like that EVER for a straight razor shave. Unfortunately, the next few days, I had "hesitation marks" on my neck as if I had tried taking my own life without following through. FML! Maybe the other barbers are better, but I'll never find out. read more

I visited HK Barbershop this past Tuesday and booked my appointment through Booksy. The check-in experience was great--friendly greeting, no wait time, and my barber was ready as soon as I walked in. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. This was my first time at this shop, and I had spent a full year growing out my hair to get a very specific haircut. I showed the barber a clear picture of what I wanted. He glanced at it once, said "OK," and got to work. I asked for a burst fade, but he didn't seem to understand what that was. Communication was difficult--either due to a language barrier or lack of response. He turned me away from the mirror while cutting, so I couldn't see what was happening. When he was done, I was shocked. The cut looked nothing like the pictures I showed him. He didn't follow the style at all and ended up cutting off most of the hair I had spent a year growing out. I left feeling extremely disappointed and frustrated. Now I have to wait another year just to try again for the style I originally wanted. We were in town for a couple of days and my boys and I were all in need for haircuts. A quick Google search resulted this highly-rated barber shop. As we were eating breakfast nearby we made reservations via their website. From the moment we walked in the door, it was an EXPERIENCE. The staff were so super friendly and inviting. All three of us were able to be seated immediately even through we were early for our appointments. In my case, my barber asked more than "how would you it cut?" He took the time to ask questions like, "any special occasions coming up?" Well, yes, I have some important meetings coming up that I would like to look sharp but professional. Armed with that information my barber created a STYLE to fit the need. He did an AMAZING job. I particularly liked all the attention to details. The sharp edges, the eyebrows, the hot towel rub. The other two barbers managed to transform my two teen rag top boys into handsome young men. We actually had FUN getting our hair cut at HK. How many places can do that? read more

By far the best haircut I've received in NYC. I scheduled an appointment for 2 pm on a weekday because I thought there would be fewer folks there. I walked in and the waiting area was completely packed and all barbers were occupied. I had to wait 15 minutes for my appointment, but it was worth the wait! I asked the barber for a side part undercut with a low fade and he delivered. Throughout the process, he asked for my input and walked me through the changes he would make and I really appreciated the transparency. This was the first time I was so specific with the haircut I wanted and I was really pleased with the result. Will be back! read more

Ideal location and a bang up job! I find no one trims my bangs like a barber so voila! I found myself here and also brought a male friend who was ready for a new look to see if today was that day. He liked the place and the professionalism they had shown so he lept into the chair. I went to get a hair cut on 04/14 because I saw good reviews. I was with a barber called danny. It was literally the worst cut I ever had. all I wanted was a fade 1-up and 1-1.5 inches off the top and I showed a pic of me after a cut for reference. He easily chopped off half my hair. the trimmer work was fine but It looked like he never held scissors before. He kept dropping it and like getting frustrated with it and he literally at points started just cutting parts of hair in the air without holding it or without a comb like my hair was being landscaped or something. the back top of my hair looks uneven and one side of my head looks like it has more hair than the other. I don't know if it was the place or just that barber but overall I regret going there. read more

I was beyond excited about this place, as I recently moved to the neighborhood, read the reviews, and wanted a new regular barber for my weekly fades. Wow was I disappointed. Bottom line: Avoid at all costs. Absolutely terrible experience. Bad haircut. Horrendous customer service. And more expensive than most other shops in the neighborhood (if you pay a premium you should get premium service!) I had booked an appointment with Ornaldo. When I arrived, he was finishing up with someone else. Another barber was overly eager to cut my hair. As I had no prior relationship with Ornaldo, I said sure, I don't want to wait. The second he draped me in a hair-catching cape, my barber started to pick a bit of a fight with the Ornaldo. "You'll have to pack up your things and go to the other shop." "Nah I'll stay here," he said. Once the other customer was finished, things escalated. Words back and forth. My barber stopped cutting my hair NUMEROUS times to fight. It was just the three of us. Things got REALLY tense and my barber wasn't paying any attention to me. I wanted to get up and leave but was half way through a skin fade, so sat quietly. Long, tortured story short, Ornaldo finally packed up his stuff to leave. My barber told him to take a key and give it to someone. Ornaldo said he could give it to himself and walked out. My barber actually ran after him, outside, yelling. There was a scene on the street, which I couldn't see, but pedestrians stopped and stared for a couple minutes. Eventually, my barber came back. He said he needed another minute and wanted to make a call. By this point I had had enough. I told him I didn't care what was happening between the two of them. I just wanted my haircut and beard trimmed. He tried to tell me the sordid tale and how they had fired him (even though I had booked an appointment with him on their system) and he wouldn't leave. Again, I said, I don't care please just finish my cut and let me get out of here. Finally, he shut up and, still fuming, finished my cut, half ass. And the job, my friends, was mediocre at best. Bad beard trim (which took all of 45 seconds and cost $15). Average fade. Not what I'm used to for much cheaper (I actually had to ask him to use a foil to make it tighter). In fact, back on Avenue C I got AMAZING fades, great trim, top notch service, etc. for significantly less. What happened to taking pride in your work? As I left, he could tell I was not happy, and he got defensive, saying the other guy was picking a fight. I noted that I only saw him berate and prod Ornaldo--and not the other way around. "He was picking fight with his attitude," said my barber, without a hint of irony. "Friendly advice," I replied, "I don't know what's up with you guys, but there's a time and a place for everything. Put yourself in my shoes. Doing that with a customer in your chair isn't it." So much for my excitement about getting great service and finding a regular barber at HK's Best Barbers. Prediction: Despite the nice logo and a few good reviews, this place won't be in business a year from now. Regardless, my search continues. read more

My son is very happy with the way his hair came out and is asking when he gets to go back.Which means a lot because he used to hate getting his haircut. We happened to pass this place by while strolling around NYC. My two sons were long overdue for haircuts. Walked in without an appointment and they were able to take both boys without much of a wait. My boys are 12 & 13 and they were in the chair for about a half hour. Great attention to detail! After my 13 year old was done he came over and said "That was the best haircut I've ever had!".
