Boyfriend and I turned to Hoagy one night when we were both feeling it, but didn't want to go to the over-abused Cheese Steak Shop in Castro Valley. So, instead, we looked up a place closer to home. Hoagy is a little hole-in-the-wall shop on East 14th. A tad shady, but not so bad that I would be uncomfortable coming alone in the evenings. It's tiny though, so you may not have enough room to wait inside after placing your order. The food is pretty decent, but I wouldn't say the quality is better than Cheese Steak Shop. It's still good, and since it's closer to home, I'd probably go here first and support a local mom and pop before I go to a franchise, but I wouldn't rave about it to friends. Wtf?! Did my fellow yelper's drop the ball? Or I am I just the only person to get two horrid hoagies and a bunch of bland fries? Ok, here's the scene... My partner and I are discussing places to go to eat where we can try something new and so I suggested the Durrant border of San leandro , knowing that there's a lot of food there and that we haven't really yelped much in that neck of the woods. She agrees that this sounds like a great idea and we head out. We arrive just before 11AM and park about a block past sweet fingers. We begin to scout the area looking for nearby shops where we can grab a bite to eat. Finally after some deliberation we decided on Hoagy Steak shop. We ordered two different sandwiches and drinks. The Korean folks who own the joint were nice and the food came after a few minutes. We got some ketchup and mustard and prepared to dig into what looked like awesome food. ...Yeah, it looked awesome, but it tasted awful. In fact to steal a phrase from Twain, it was "powerful weak." The meat was dry, the cheese was salty or non-existent, (Dependent upon which sandwich it was). the toppings were fresh but the fries were lacking in flavor, (you couldn't even really taste potato). I have a theory about why this might be... I think it's because the grill just got turned on and they had just opened. We were the second customers of the day and this and the crowd may have led to the bad food. I am going to give this place one more shot sometime soon, but for now the verdict stands one star. HOW have I not given Hoagy Steak some love yet? Run by a husband/wife duo, this place makes a great sandwich! I always get the Deluxe and add jalapeños. The regular fries are good but you can upgrade for curly fries or onion rings too. We often pick up the sandwich early and eat it during the week. It heats up really well in a toaster oven. I had the Personal: steak, cheese, bell peppers, lettuce, tomato, jalapeno, mushrooms, and optional grilled onions. Amen this place, down and dirty. The quality is incredibly medium, the price is quite cheap, and it is a lot of food that will certainly fill you up. Where I grew up (in the Merrimack Valley), you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a sub shop, and pretty much every one of those shops offers steak & cheese. When I moved to the west coast in 1995 I never thought I'd see another good steak & cheese sandwich because most of the shops over here are all about cold sandwiches. Cold sandwiches have their place but there's nothing like a good old New England style steak & cheese. One day Kelle and I decided to try Hoagy Steak and man, oh man am I glad we did. I ordered a steak & cheese with mushrooms and onions and it was absolutely delicious. My only nitpick, and it's a tiny one, is that the steak should be cooked with black pepper, but other than that, it was excellent. One other thing - the room is VERY small. You come here for the sound of spatulas hitting the hot grill and flying slices of thin rib eyes caramelizing. It's seared at a high level and serve to you piping hot. I always settle for the bacon/cheese or the Italian. I must try the chef's special next time I go. But there you go folks. If you want your food right away, I suggest calling ahead of time. Call me crazy but I think the Korean couple who runs this joint can seriously give Geno's and Pat's a run for their money! Just because this place isn't located in the East coast does not mean its not legit. Just like Zachary's pizza pwning Chi-Town hehe...we do have a whole bunch of hidden gems in the bay area. When I compare the Deluxe Cheesesteak and its provolone, mushrooms, green bellpeppers, and grilled onions to the "REAL" Philly cheesesteaks, this thing is way more packed with steak than Pat's and uses real cheese (Provolone) unlike that fake Cheese Whiz of Geno's. It is greasy and expect to put on a pound...if not you ain't eat'n right. I usually sub the fries with garlic fries or onion rings as the regular fries have no taste though and the beer battered mushrooms are alright. We can now end all the bickering and fussing amongst Philadelphians and claim this little city in CA as having the best Philadelphia Cheesesteak!
