There is a bar in Bordentown, New Jersey, only a block from the main drag but hidden snug as a tick among the residential streets, called the Heart of Bordentown, HOB Tavern, for short. Heart of Bordentown! How wonderful, how tragic, how appropriate. If you grew up in America, you already know this place, even if you have never set foot in New Jersey. Sticky floors. PBRs at three dollars a pop. A shot roulette wheel. The smell of old beer and older hope. And a menu that could be printed on the back of a cocktail napkin: wings, burgers, fried somethings that used to be animals. Tofu even makes a cursory appearance. I ordered a whiskey and ginger ale, and they did not ask me what kind of whiskey, either because there was not a choice, or because in a place like this, the existential choice is always "yes." It came in a pint glass. Nine dollars. Heavy pour. Good enough for the likes of me. My wife asked for a vodka soda. "Is Tito's okay?" the bartender asked, displaying more concern for the quality of her spirit than the average congressman shows for the quality of his constituents. The regulars were loud, but they were not mean about it. A group of young women celebrated a birthday. The entire bar sang "Happy Birthday" with the ragged sincerity of a people who have seen too many Tuesdays. It was beautiful in a slightly tragic, terribly American way. In the midst of our singing, one bartender, still seemingly a bbit green behind the ears, forgot how to make a Malibu Bay Breeze. Cannot blame him. Our rendition was raucous. Or maybe he just was not built for tropical cocktails. In any case, what is remembered about a drink like that is not the technique, but the intention. Listen: if you come here, order a beer. Or a simple mixed drink, no more than two ingredients, no more dreams than that. Stick to the wings or the burger. Nachos if you're feeling adventerous. HOB Tavern is a cozy pub with one big bar that serves up American-style food, including vegetarian and vegan options. From wings, pretzels, tots, to burgers, sandwiches, salads, and more! They also do catering! Leashed and friendly dogs are allowed inside, which is the best! It is a tight space around the bar, so have control of your pup so they do not get underfoot. There is also covered outdoor seating in the beer garden. The chicken cheesesteak and "big fat lie" vegan burger entree were delicious! Our server was also awesome! The HOB used to serve good food at reasonable prices. I had not been there in a long time so my friend and I decided to try it on a Friday for an early dinner. I was in for a surprise. I had forgotten how loud it was in there but it was fine because we could still hear ourselves talk. We got there around 4:00 and there were several open seats. We ordered an iced tea, a mocktail drink, and mozzarella sticks. My drink was good but there wasn't much of it. It came in a tall, thin glass with lots of ice. It was gone in about five sips. The mozzarella sticks were hot and pretty much the same as you'd get at any bar, so nothing special . The sauce was meh. We weren't given any plates or utensils. The bar filled up and they put music on so it got really loud. We wanted to catch up but couldn't hear so decided to leave. The bill came to almost $25! My mocktail was $11 (no prices on the menu and there's a reason for that), the iced tea was $4, and the mediocre mozzarella sticks were $10. I know prices have gone up for everything but that is way too expensive for a dive bar and what we ordered! I wasn't at all impressed. I won't be back. read more

I've been wanting to try HOB for a few years and finally got here with a friend who lives in Btown and visits frequently. I'd say this is more of a drinking bar, than an eating bar, but the food I had was good too. I skipped the adult beverages as nothing tempted me, $8 for a 12-16 oz pour seems the going rate. We shared pirogies which were pretty good, deep fried but not oily and tasty potato filling. They are not homemade but also not frozen grocery store quality either. There didn't seem to be a burger on the menu so I ordered the steak sandwich, it was medium sized and came with very good fries. The beef was tender and with plenty of onions and cheese. It was good but I'd probably try something else on a future visit. I hear they have a burger night and daily specials so maybe a weekday visit would feature more options. Came in with a large group of 15. Ordered 2 Moscow Mules for my girlfriend and I. They were very sour and I asked for some without the added lime juice. The bartender made 2 new ones but wanted to charged me for the two shitty drinks and was a complete asshole about me asking him to remove them. So instead of my party staying for a while and spending probably hundreds, we left. He was a complete asshole and we will never go there again. He wouldn't tell me his name nor get the manager. First of all, parking in Bordentown is very difficult to find. We rode around a couple of times before we found something and were about to give up and go somewhere else. This is your typical local bar with mostly locals visiting. There really isn't any seating except for the long oval bar, a very little bit outside, and a couple high tops or so. The menu is a generally a typical bar menu with some drink and food specials. The HOB burger I had was good and my husband enjoyed their Italian hot dogs. I had a cocktail Margarita, which was good, but a little bit too strong for me. My husband was able to sample two beers. Their beer menu is mostly bottles and cans and mostly IPA's on tap so a limited variety. The lager he chose was good though. The staff were very friendly and accomodating. We wouldn't run back, though, since we thought it was nothing to brag about and parking is such a problem. read more

Stopped into Hob tavern for Thursday Night Football... They have a Mac and Cheese Bowl night every Thursday night that has 8ish different Macs! When we 1st got there we couldn't find parking and then thought maybe we will go to the place around the corner but the food there didn't look as good ! As we were parking we found municipal parking So we just parked and walked ! Thank god we did !! The food was a small menu but that's ok it was amazing!! The wings are to die for! Cocktails are worthy of ANY fancy cocktail bar in the city. Try em. And now for the wings. Those sweet glorious plump perfect crispy pieces of chicken. We did the garlic parm and pb&j wings. Both are solid 10s. Would I order pp&j everytime? No, but ANY time I bring someone new, gotta get em. Not too sweet, not too peanut buttery. Just perfect. Now I will order garlic parm EVERYTIME. Came to HOB Tavern for the first time during covid times. We sat outside around one of the fire pits and they had lights up inside the tent so it was super cute! even though you're around a fire don't forget to dress warmly during the winter months! French onion soup was the perfect way to warm us up and we also got the spicy cauliflower, buffalo garlic parm wings, and a cowboy burger with fries. The folks over at the HOB say it's "where friends meet friends." Have to say they're right. At any given time you're likely to strike up a conversation with another patron. Not much drama here, just good times and good people. No matter who is on staff that day, you're welcomed in like a regular. However it comes across as genuine. So many other places have that fake happy - Not here. They have a pretty good rotation of items on tap. The food is some of the best in town. Don't get me wrong, it's not Toscano, but you'll get a solid bar meal. Wednesday night is Burger Night and they'll often throw in a specialty burger. Nowadays it's $10 for a burger with a wide variety of toppings, cooked to your liking with fries. Their wings are excellent with the Cowboy Sauce being my favorite. It's like a tangy Buffalo sauce. There's a bunch of vegan options, if that's your thing. However, there isn't any gluten free bread offered. No one would look at you crooked if you brought your own bun, though. The bar itself can get pretty crowded and there's limited outdoor seating. Either way you'll get some very heartfelt service from people who really care. read more

After tasing three brews, selected a new River Horse release Da'Nile- dark color, over tones of vanilla and molasses. Nice beer. We started with the Cajun wings, a bit over fried but a nice spice mix and moist. We did enjoy our sandwich choices. I hade the Clara Barton- a grilled chicken breast with roasted pepper and provolone cheese. Wasn't a fan of the road roll-- boring. Nevertheless, was tasty and a safe go to for me. My honey enjoyed the William Allen, better roll choice and chicken cooked to her taste. HOB stands for Heart of Bordentown. You'll find this pub a block off the main strip of Farnsworth Avenue nestled between attached historic homes on a corner. As you walk up to the place you may be inclined to turn around and not enter but trust me and walk in. You'll immediately feel like you've entered a college bar in the 1980s but don't be fooled by the decor this is a really good place with a great food and craft beer menu. We visited on a Friday night around 6PM and the place was nearly full. We found 2 seats at the bar and settled in. We were immediately greeted by a friendly bartender who told us about the food specials and also provided us with craft beer and food menus. I selected a beer from Crossroads Brewing called "The New Normal", an unfiltered New England style IPA and my wife chose a Manhattan with Makers Mark. The beers were a bit pricey for a hole in the wall place at $7-$9 a glass (some were not even pints), yet the drink was reasonable at $9 plus a $2 up charge for premium liquor. For dinner I started with the French onion soup which had a delicious broth but the onions were not caramelized and still a bit firm but overall the soup was very good. We shared the HOB potatoes which were small whole roasted potatoes tossed in a signature sauce that tasted like a twist on traditional buffalo. We enjoyed these a lot. I wanted to order their homemade white bean burger but they were sold out and offered a "not homemade" black bean burger but I declined. Instead we decided to split the Patience Wright sandwich which was baked tofu and coconut "bacon" served on a delicious sourdough bread. It came with a side of salad, pickles and coleslaw or you can sub fries for $2 more but we stuck with the salads. This sandwich was absolutely delicious and I'm already craving it again. The portions were big enough that one app and sharing a sandwich was more than enough. I did want to try the tofu bites that you can order tossed with any of their wing sauces so I'll try that next time. If you are vegan or vegetarian this is a worthwhile place to stop in as the options are surprisingly plentiful. read more

Great dive bar atmosphere that reminds me so much of the places I grew up with on the south side of Pittsburgh - loved it. Strictly a beer joint however so forget any notion of ordering wine. (COVID REVIEW) Recently, we went to visit friends who have recently moved to Bordentown and they were eager to show us around. We were able to walk the downtown area easily and there were many adorable businesses to chose from. HOB was one on our list since there was ample outdoor seating that spread down the block. The woman working in the ordering area was very friendly and happily gave us suggestions on drinks. I got a summer sangria followed by a mixed berry lemonade. Both were very tasty but at 11$ a pop (not advertised), I am not sure I would be running back for specialty cocktails. They looked like they definitely know their clientele. There were tons of neighbors walking by and saying hello or stopping in for takeout. I ordered elote because I was starving and needed a little something in my stomach. I have had better for sure but it did the job. I think this would be better as a vodka soda / gin and tonic / beer and shot type of a bar. Everyone who had ordered food looked like they were greatly enjoying it when it arrived so I would definitely give it a try for something more substantial. You definitely have to get there early as the bar area fills up quick before the tacos start at 7PM. They had a $1 shot special that we tried which was good. Very sweet and not able to really taste any alcohol. We got the loaded fries while we waited. They were delicious and you certainly got a lot of fries! The $1 were okay, basically what you would expect for a $1 taco. The bar itself hosts a lot of different activities, $1 tacos, bingo night, and live music. The husband took me for a ride to Bordentown to visit a new brewery down the street which we loved, but afterwards we wanted something to eat. A quick YELP search brought us here to the HOB. The HOB is a cute local bar and restaurant with bar food and a fair amount of local and craft beer on tap. The food was ok. Husband had the Clara Barton sandwich (chicken with spinach) and I had the Bonaparte (roast beef with dipping sauce). He enjoyed his but I didn't love mine. The roast beef was not sliced thin like advertised on the menu, and something was off about the dipping sauce. I ended up only eating half. I took the rest home but opted to throw it out because overall, the sandwich didn't agree with my stomach. The service was good from the bartenders, I just wish they turned the juke box back on or had some other kind of music. Also, it is street parking only so you may need to circle a bit or park in the municipal lot a few blocks away. read more

Darned close to the perfect neighborhood bar. It's convenient to Bordentown City. Of course, then again, it's a compact city and everything is convenient. HOB Tavern has a great menu of chicken wings with some awesome sauces. I loved their General Tso's sauce and my friend swears by their peanut butter and jelly sauce. They also have sandwiches and burgers named after historical locals. And in keeping with the bar food theme, they also offer a huge variety of loaded tots and fries. (Honestly, the Memphis BBQ tots with melted cheese, BBQ sauce, and bacon were held back by the stingy application of BBQ sauce.)
