We sure hit a home run when we decided to book a reservation at Hobbs Harborside. The restaurant is huge and beautiful, with a big bar, plenty of tables, and a big outdoor deck overlooking the water. We enjoyed a few drinks out on the deck before we were called. Our server for the evening was Shelby H. and if there is a finer server in the state of Maine, I'd be stunned. She was everything we could possibly have asked for -sweet, friendly, funny, conversational, cheerful, helpful, efficient, professional- she checked all the boxes. I started off with one of their pillowy soft complimentary dinner rolls, a glass of Zardetto Prosecco ($11), and then turned my attention to the many appetizers our table ordered to share. I sampled some of the Bacon Wrapped Scallops ($19.99) and Baby Lobster Cakes ($19.99) -both of which were excellent. For my main, I went with a Seafood Sampler ($31.99) - a "combination of fresh haddock, sea scallops and stuffed shrimp broiled with a topping of buttering crumbs". This was a wonderful dish! The scallops were sweet and tender, the fish was flaky and perfectly cooked, and the shrimp was delicious. The entrée came with a choice of 2 sides, so I went with a double order of Brussels Sprouts which were amazing. Came here with a group of 8 around 6 and was told we had to wait an hour for our table. When we were finally seated our waitress promptly got us drinks. I ordered a Caesar salad with my lobster Mac. It came out but was huge chunks of lettuce. I had to do a lot of cutting. The croutons on the salad were like rye croutons and were not good. When our food came my lobster Mac had huge chunks of lobster in it. It was very good and it was a lot of food. The ribs my dad had were fall off the bone and were delicious. The coconut shrimp was very good. The espresso Martini they gave my sister tasted like straight alcohol it wasn't good. If you are going to have a "nice" restaurant like this allow groups of 6 or more to make reservations ahead of time. Service was excellent. My "lazyman's" Lobster was delicious, delicate & the flavored butter sauce was very good. I ordered butter glazed carrots & sweet potato fries, both were served cold. My wife had fried shrimp, which she enjoyed, however, her rice & carrots were also cold. I've been coming to Wells for 20 years, participating in the ICS Chili cookoff at the junior high school. I always have dinner at Hobbs, and also, years ago, when it was called Majors. This hiccup in the food will not deter me from coming there in the future. It has been our pleasure to dine at Hobbs several times. Our recent visit was , like all the others, very satisfying. The restaurant is truly beautiful with spectacular views of a salt marsh. We wanted Big Belly Clams on this April night last week 4/20, and decided to go to HOBBS, and we were not disappointed, one of the best clam dishes we ever had. I called the restaurant asked if they allowed dogs, yes we do but we don't take reservations no problem we left early after an hour drive we were dogs aren't allowed, terrific a busy Saturday in Maine which is why I called ahead and asked? There was no way we were getting in anywhere else, extremely disappointed in Hobbs and they way they handled this, worse part is that the food is subpar, the clam chowder is very sandy and butter just floats on top , and the service they rave about, I've never seen it, always have to ask for everything from bread to silverware to drinks. So confusing. Beautiful spot in the water. Great bartenders at the bar. Then it gets confusing. Waiter was a little high strung and focused on the next group at the table before we were served. Pleasant but brought me oysters with the usual sides, but no little spoon or fork. I was trying to think of the word spoon and he rudely said "use your words". Then I was given a large soup spoon. Dinner was well-prepared and we enjoyed it. Coffee after dinner, nope and I think he was hoping we'd leave so the table would leave and open for the next. He suggested we go outside. My husband and I had a large meal for brunch. Later in the afternoon we decided we needed a "snack". Hobbs Harborside had been recommended by a few people so we went there. We were told how fabulous the menu was and how special everything is. We really just wanted fried clams! To get them, we ended up ordering an entree that included fried clams, fries, and coleslaw and we shared it. Everything was very average - including the menu. It may as well have been a Red Lobster. We arrived at 4:30, the place was already very busy. We put our name in for a table and went outside and enjoyed the live music, and a few cocktails. We got seated at a dinner table about 5:15pm. We ordered the scallops wrapped in bacon, which are listed as gluten-free, later to find out that they fry them in the same fryer as all the other seafood with breadcrumb, so they are not gluten-free. This was a great find, while out exploring Wells, Maine. Clean, friendly fast service, with an awesome view of the harbor. They brought out fresh dinner rolls, with honey butter, to start. Popped in for dinner and luckily found 2 seats right at bar. WS a half hour wait which we were lucky enough to avoid. Decided to share the baked haddock with onion rings and a Cesar salad and so glad we shared. Enough food for both of us so not bringing seafood home in doggie bag. The haddock was great and so were onion rings and salad. Only questionable item was haddock chowder which was more like a soup but service was super and view was even batter. We stopped by to watch a local musician perform on the outside patio, then grabbed a bite to eat. We were promptly met inside the door, and handed a buzzer for our wait for a table. In the meantime, we strolled onto the back patio area that overlooks Wells Harbor, to watch Paul Chase Jr play his acoustic guitar and sing (). There's a lovely view of Wells Harbor from the patio, and lots of bird life to see. After Pauls performance, we went inside to eat. The dining room was pretty full, and a little loud because of a low ceiling. Service was good, food was average quality. My wife and daughter both enjoyed their shrimp scampi ($ 27.00), and my haddock dinner was ok, nothing special. I ordered the "small" dinner ($24.00), which came with some French fries and coleslaw slaw. The piece of fish was small and thin, and the fries were just barely warm, with no flavor except for salt on them. I finished the fish, but only ate 1/4 of the fries. The girls both ordered High Noons to drink, and I had a glass of local draft beer. Dinner with one drink each cost $130.00 with the tip included. read more

There's at least one bartender who needs training though as the drinks consistently have so much alcohol you may as well drink straight from the bottle. We decided to try a new place for our traditional lobster and steamer dinner we have every time we visit Maine and heard good reviews for this longtime establishment. Hobbs is right on the water and we had to wait about 10 minutes to get a table so we sat outside and enjoyed the view. The interior of the restaurant is nothing special, a little old but it's like a typical old seafood place that is just known for good food. We were seated shortly and they had plenty of open tables, but apparently like every place else they are short staffed. Our server was Brenda and she was great! We both got the clam chowder, my husband loved it and I really didn't care for how watery it was . The clam chowder was more like clam soup to me, but husband preferred this one to many too thick ones we've had at other places. We also enjoyed our steamers and lobster.
