We rolled into Wells at lunch time on a Sunday in late July, full expecting that any place we went, would be mobbed. After a brief moment of not understanding that there was a fish counter next door, also called Mike's Clam Shack, we found our way to the main restaurant. We could see that there was plenty of open spaces for parking and even more so, plenty of open seats at the cute outdoor bar, so we were happy to proceed. We were seated quickly and cheerfully and handed our lunch menus. Food and drinks, as well as the service, was all spot-on! I went inside to use the loo and realized just how huge it was inside as well. Even if it were crowded, they look like they can handle things easily. We will absolutely be back again. read more

Excellent. The food is top-notch. Everything is excellent. This trip we had the muscles appetizer and split the prime rib. The muscles were perfect pump and perfectly cooked. I couldn't believe we were ordering prime rib, and seafood house, then I tasted the prime rib and it was excellent excellent. I'm very fussy with my prime rib and it passed the test. Very disappointed in our recent visit. It was beautiful out, so we ordered from the takeout window and sat on the patio. Seating area was nice, employee was nice, we have been at Mike's many time over the 30 years we've been going to Wells. Received our food within 10 minutes; we shared the fried seafood platter with sweet potato fries and cole slaw as sides. Opened the box and I noticed that the onion rings and potatoes made up 2/3rds of the box. The box was damp and the seafood looked greasy. It was not only greasy, but tasteless. The haddock fish & chips was the highlight of disappointment. It screamed "frozen fish soaked in water" from the first bite: the fillet fell apart like wet tissue the second I touched it, the batter was soggy and greasy rather than crisp, and the whole thing tasted like regret with a side of freezer burn. We've been visiting Maine multiple times a year for years, and Mike's Clam Shack used to be a must-visit at least twice per trip. Unfortunately, it has completely turned into an overpriced tourist trap. The wait time was absurdly long, so we considered sitting in the bar area to save time, but it was so dark you could barely read a menu. On top of that, the cleanliness was terrible, the floors desperately needed a vacuum, and empty tables were left filthy. When our food finally arrived, it was cold. Charging $32 for a miniature lobster roll is absolute robbery, especially after doing away with their complimentary dinner rolls. The absolute worst part was the staff. A female employee was unbelievably rude to my parents, almost yelling at them over a simple, polite question. They are the kindest, most non-confrontational people, so seeing them treated that way was completely unacceptable. We won't be back. read more

I'll be blunt, it's an overpriced "Tourist Trap". 30 bucks for a diminutive size lobster roll. We picked this place on a whim while in the area. There were thunderstorms in the area and it started pouring while we were ordering from the takeout window. The young employees were so nice and said we could wait inside for our order. The restaurant was busy inside for Father's Day. There is a firepit and a lot of nice outdoor seating but it was all wet, so they said feel free to take our food to the outdoor bar which had nice plastic sides to protect from the weather. All the staff was so helpful, and it was a great place to ride out the storm. The food was excellent, too. My husband had baked stuffed haddock with rice pilaf and baked potato. Mikes Calm Shack never disappoints...food for every budget....Tonight I had the Fried Haddock plate and it was excellent with 2 sides of Coleslaw....But it all started with a great bowl of Baked onion soup...It was fantastic. I haven't been disappointed since I have been eating there...(Well I was disappointed once last year when I thought they were serving prime rib..but the night I went it wasn't being served...My mistake...) The menu options were great and the waitress was friendly and attentive. The meals tonight were a bit off compared to previous visits. One was the turkey dinner which came with mashed potato's and coleslaw. Both the turkey and stuffing was extremely dry with the dark turkey being crunchy. My haddock nugget basket with sweet potato fries were cooked to perfection. The nuggets were light and moist and the sweet potato fries were perfectly crisp too. We had an appetizer of zucchini sticks, which were extremely good but the "sticks" could have been sliced a little thinner. Very disappointing experience. After a day at the beach, I was so looking forward to some steamers. Mike's apparently has a fish market next door and reviews seemed mainly favorable, so we gave it a try. My husband ordered potato skins, that he said were fine, but nothing to brag about. I ordered New England clam chowder to go along with my steamers. The chowder wasn't bad but should have been hotter. The major issue was the steamers. I don't think they were even rinsed before they were prepared. We are not talking sand. They were loaded with mud. When I mentioned it to the waiter he said "oh, they must have forgot to wash them today" and that if I had let him know sooner he could have brought me another cup of broth to rinse them in. We went around 6pm on a Tuesday- it was very busy but only waited 10 minutes for a party of seven! Our server was very friendly and the food and drinks came out exceptionally fast which was great because we had little kids in our party! The Twin Lobster Dinner which I ordered seemed like a deal for the price but some of the other items were more expensive than they probably should have been. The three kids split the adult chicken finger dinner which was $26. Most of the kids meals were around $15 so be prepared for that! We had a great experience and will definitely be back! read more

We love this place! It gets very busy in the summertime so as locals we tend to visit just in spring, fall, winter. They do close for 6 weeks starting in February. The medium onion rings is easily enough for 4 people. The chicken tenders are some of the best I've ever had- definitely made in-house and not frozen. Baked haddock and scallops were delicious and cooked perfect. Not pictured but I've had before- fantastic potato skins and fried shrimp. I'm not huge on shrimp but I LOVE their shrimp. Both the dining room and bar are very large and accommodating. Lots of tvs for sports in the bar as well as a cozy fireplace and popcorn machine. The staff are always very friendly. read more

Been coming to Wells-Ogunquit area for a few years and keep trying new places to eat and always saw Mikes Clam Shack parking lot full of cars so decided to try it. Wife and I will do one fried clam dinner a year and so we both went for the clam/scallops dish. Both were the best we have had in a long time. Not overfried, clean batter, and very fresh tasting. The clams tasted like steamers freshly battered, and the scallops had no chemichal flavors, slightly opaque in the center. Onion rings were also good in place of fries at no extra cost. Honestly, a let down. A huge let down. Now, let me start by saying my server, Moriah (according to the receipt), was nothing short of ideal. Extremely polite, the perfect blend of friendly and accommodating, and an invaluable asset to a southerner like myself trying to navigate the menu. However, when I arrived I was told the wait time was expected to be 5-10 minutes. This surprised me because the parking lot was so full I had to park a half block away. Whatever, 5-10 minutes gave me a chance to browse the gift shop. I took my time and after deciding upon a black "Mike's" shirt I sat down expecting my buzzer to go off at any time. It didn't. Thirty minutes after sat down and roughly 45 minutes after I arrived I was finally seated...in an almost empty dining area. All this time waiting and for what??? At this point in the night I'm starving and would've already had time to drive somewhere else and finish a meal before returning to my hotel. But, I was hyped up! This place was the talk of the town (as far as Google goes) and I was already invested. After careful deliberation over a fresh, steaming, hot cup of coffee, I decided (with the help of Moriah) on the Broiled Seafood Sampler and a cup of Seafood Chowder. The sampler consisted of haddock, two stuffed shrimp, and scallops all broiled, supposedly, to perfection. For the sides I chose the daily vegetable which turned out to be squash and zucchini and an order of the loaded mashed potatoes. But, before I feasted on the Maine course, I needed an appetizer to quiet my rumbling stomach. For that I chose the Seafood Stuffed Mushrooms. Order complete. The stuffed mushrooms arrived very quickly and were honestly one of the most delectable looking appetizers I'd ever laid eyes on. Stuffed tall and full, crispy and baked to golden perfection. Let me tell ya, they tasted as good as they looked. If I had know how my main entree was going to turn out I'd have just ordered a fed servings of these instead. They were exceptionally tasty and for once in my life I waited until my food was good and chewed up before swallowing, savoring every bite. Next up, the seafood chowda. The menu advertised a blend of lobstah, fish, and shrimp and it didn't lie. Immediately I was turned off. You could see the grease bubbles floating all over the top and in the saucer beneath the bowl. It appeared to be almost as thin and transparent as the Atlantic Ocean from which it's ingredients were caught. Still, I rowed on. It tasted about the way it looked; sure you could taste the fish and even the shrimp, but other than that it was a bland bowl of disappointment that even salt, pepper, and oyster crackers couldn't save. Finally, after a glass of water to wash away the taste of sadness left behind by the chowda, my entree arrived. Glistening with a slight crust around the edges, the presentation was very misleading in regard to what the actual food tasted like. Broiled haddock, scallops, and two stuffed shrimp. Should be a winning combo, right? Not in this case. With the exception of the stuffed shrimp (which were on par with the aforementioned stuffed mushrooms), the food was bland and unseasoned apart from the watery butter bath in which it sat. I tried to muscle through it, but I just couldn't. I rarely leave a plate unfinished and always use a take out box if I do, not in this case. Besides the fact that no one likes reheated seafood, this wasn't worth saving. Worth mentioning though, the loaded mashed potatoes were as good as any I'd get in the South. Pure mashed perfection with gooey cheese and fresh bacon crumbles. Paired with the stuffed mushrooms, the potatoes could have been a meal all on their own. Needless to say I asked for my ticket, paid my bill, and left quite disappointed. As I looked out upon the overly filled parking lot I could only think of a few things about my latest dining experience: why did I wait so long to be seated an empty dining area, how does this place have such rave reviews, and should I go back to order more of the stuffed mushrooms? Questions I may never know the answers to. So, if you do end up stopping in after reading this review, skip anything broiled and ask for Moriah. read more
