We are here for the first time for brunch on a Sunday. We made a reservation because this is a smaller establishment and we made a previous attempt to dine in for dinner but the wait was pretty long. We were seated as soon as we arrived (doesn't happen everywhere even with a reservation) and it was pretty crowded. The service was great. The wait time for us to get our food was reasonable. We enjoyed bloody mary's and mimosas as we waited. The food was fresh, seasoned just right and delicious. We have since done pickup for dinner, which has been equally as good. I've eaten here many times and enjoyed the food and service. I ate there a month ago and got food poisoning. All it takes is one night talking to God on the porcelain receiver to put this place on my "no go" list. At the very least, don't order the Country Captain, but the whole menu is now suspect to me. read more

This was my second visit, the first time was about two years ago at which time I would have given a solid 4 if not 5 stars This time, I struggled with a between a 2 and 3. The food - 5 stars. The service was sub-par so a 2 it is, and here's why - we ordered the smash burger as entree and hush puppies as appetizer. We were not asked how well we wanted the burger done nor advised they would be cooked to med/medium well. Our preference is pink/medium rare. (Strike 1) - the 6 hush puppies came out (very good taste and consistency) and before could each have a second one, our entree arrived! For a more upscale place, this is unacceptable (strike 2) - as we are finishing the meal, and I my drink, the check was laid down in front of us. No asking if I wanted another drink or if we were interested in dessert. We think they were doing a shift change, which is absolutely no excuse for this behavior. If you are looking for a cute lunch spot and something different... this is your place! It's a small spot but probably about the size you find most restaurants in carytown/fan/city. I like that it is a little cozy, gives you a homey feel. I just started a new job at an office after working from home the past 6 years so I've been excited to try out new lunch spots. Driving up to it, it didn't seem like there would be a restaurant there... felt a little random but it works. There are roughly 10 tables most are 4 seaters and there is one circular table that would accommodate a larger party. We got their at 11:30 and if I didn't make a reservation through the Resy app we would've definitely not get seated. I met up with one of my long time friends here for a quick catch up and lunch during my lunch hour. Everything I saw come out that other tables got looked awesome... I really want to truly the Fried Green Tomatoes my next visit! Both my friend and I ended up getting the Pimento BLT which was to die for. We were both raving how delicious it was! My only complaint and it's probably more personal preference is that I would prefer thicker bread. Not the bread is crispy but quite thin. So if you are expecting a think sandwich this is not it. My friend got it with fries and I got it with onion rings.. both were yummy. We were both already saying we should come back here soon! Service was quick I was in and out from and back to work within an hour, so that is a bonus in my book. The spot is a hidden gem. Everything is beautifully plated wonderful wait service and a beautiful ambience. The appetizers are mostly shareable and I enjoyed the banana bread appetizer. From the picture this may look like a pretty solid dish, but before ordering know that the portion is VERY small. If you are hungry stay away from this dish. The chicken sandwich and fry portion were also lackluster. It also seemed thrown together and not fresh. The service was also questionable, they messed my order up and didn't refill drinks. This is a great little spot that we came upon for an early lunch. The staff was so friendly and also attentive to all our needs. Not to mention the food being amazing. We started off with appetizer's of hush puppies and oysters and they were all very fresh and delicious. And then we tried the salad, chicken sandwich, and the dog groceries all I can say is that they were all really good! Ahh this is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. I made reservations the past two weekends for brunch because it's so good. I'm worried this place is going to get super popular because of how amazing the service is and how delicious the food is. Here is a picture of my zucchini pancakes, literally one of the best meals I've ever had! Id also recommend the strawberry shortcake if you have a sweet tooth like me. Edit: I really wanted to love this place but I just went in and had a bad experience at the bar. The place was booked basically for the next hour so that's why I sat there and the bartender who served me barely acknowledged me. I don't know what was up but it made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome there. Literally the size of a hole in the wall, nestled in Lakeside, Hobnob is a cozy spot for regulars and newbies alike. I fall into the newbie category and will be referencing the winter menu since that's the only one I've tried so far! We started with pimento cheese hush puppies and chicken spring rolls. The hush puppies were LIFE. Crispy, gooey, goodness. In comparison, the spring rolls, although flavorful, fell just a little short - maybe just not fried long enough for my liking. I had the fried chicken salad and it is now one of my favorites. The chicken was cooked perfectly!! Everything was so fresh and thoughtfully prepared and plated. I couldn't help but feel warm and fuzzy inside (fried chicken and rosé am I right?) But really though, I loved it and I wasn't the only one. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there, including the staff! Again, this place is TINY! I def wouldn't go for dinner without a reservation and even lunch was almost a full house on a Friday around 1PM. New lunch spot for me and my co-workers! Small, cute space with knowledgeable and attentive staff. Their menu is small, but ever-changing, which I'm a fan of. The food I've had has been fresh and delicious - order the shrimp tacos if they are available! They fill up quickly for lunch, but they take reservations for parties of five or more. They have a small patio that would be perfect for a cooler summer day - they currently don't have umbrellas out there, so the extra seating has been unused on my most recent visits due to the summer heat. With everyone crammed inside, it can be quite loud. Not the best place for a quiet lunch, but a great spot regardless! read more

Stopped in for a late night bite with my wife a couple weeks ago. Hardly anyone in the building and took us a few minutes to even be greeted. Eventually took a seat at the bar. The bartender Savanna seemed like she was ready to go and was cleaning around us instead of helping us. Asked for a simple margarita and it appeared she had to ask several other employees how to make it. Finally got a sour watered down margarita to go with my meal. The burger was fine but salty. The fries were charred beyond recognition. They snapped in half and were basically dust on the inside. When we were finally ready to go took another 10 minutes to get the bartender to stop having a loud wildly inappropriate conversation to get our check. Food was 3/5 but the service was lacking. Such a warm, wonderful neighborhood restaurant! We were here for an early lunch and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The shrimp-and-grits were excellent - cooked perfectly and with a sauce that was a spot-on accompaniment. (Although I might've liked a little more spice heat because I'm greedy.) The Shoofly Muffins were excellent as well, with the whipped vanilla butter that really completed them. The breakfast potatoes were a bit heavy to me, but they had good flavor. The cocktails [it wasn't _too_ early a lunch!] were creative and well made. With it's cool, modern decor, I felt like Hobnob was a neighborhood diner along the lines of something you might find in a lake-side town. As others have said, there was a small-ish indoor dining area, an area of outdoor covered seating, and an area of outdoor uncovered seating. The latter has high-top tables, while the first two have regular tables. The staff is warm and friendly. Plenty of parking is available in the gravel lot, where you'll also find a fun bumble bee - unicycle mural on the side of the restaurant. Reservations were at least encouraged when we went, and I can see how the wait might be a while without one. read more

First let me say that because the parking lot was full and the amount of people that we saw who were walking from the side street where they had parked, we almost drove away. Then as we were leaving, a spot opened up. I am so glad we stayed. Once getting past the few people who were waiting to be seated, the hostess found us an open table immediately. I told my wife that we would probably be waiting for food and service, and I was quickly proven wrong. We had our drinks in minutes and appetizer in minutes also. That was the fried oysters which were generous, large, plump, and cooked to perfection. My wife had the Strawberry Goat salad with grilled chicken which she said was awesome and it looked awesome. I went with the Shrimp which was a 3.5 to me but then again I love my version, so you may give them a 5. And for that reason along with everything else it's a solid 5 star. read more

I really liked Hobnob. I would go back. Especially for the Sticky Buns, which were the BEST STICKY BUNS YOU'LL EVER EAT. The good: 1. Sticky Buns - A+++++ bravo chef, I was drooling over the plate. These buns seriously made my entire week! 2. Service - the staff are great, so friendly, and totally chill. We sat at the bar because the tables were full, and the bartender was awesome. Loved her. 3. The food overall was pretty good. Besides the sticky buns, the cinnamon rolls were sold out so fast, that I bet those are even better than the buns, so I need to try them. I'm sad they were sold out and I didn't get any. The cheesy grits were good, but could have used more cheese. and the crab Benedict was also good, but I'm picky about my crab cakes since I'm from Maryland, and these just had too much filler, and artificial tasting crab meat. But, overall, was still pretty good and beautiful presentation. My friend enjoyed her chicken & waffles, but the dish was not the same without the honey sauce that comes with it, so order extra sauce. It makes the dish. 4. Dessert menu - fantastic! I was so impressed with dessert, I had to order 2 different slices of pie! Both were amazing. The peanut butter cake was soooo good, with a thick oreo cookie crust. YUMM! And I also got a berry cheesecake which I loved as well. Bravo on dessert! The not-as good: 1. Very small, so get comfortable hearing your neighbors conversion at the table next to you. 2. Make a reservation, its so small, it will be full. 3. Get there early or the best menu items will be sold out. 4. Went for lunch starting with the Crab & Fennel Toast. It's strange it tasted more like tuna which was a disappointment. Everything else was very good. We lucked out this morning by grabbing the very last table in this quaint restaurant in lakeside/northside area. After hearing from someone that they hesitated to mention how wonderful it was because they didn't want to fight for a table every time they came, I couldn't resist giving it a try. The coffee was delicious, the service wonderful and the food even better. The shrimp and grits was the best meal on the table- Large perfectly cooked shrimp over smoked Gouda grits with LOTS of delicious sauce topped with a tart tomato salad. The special of the day was breakfast tacos (eggs, bacon, guac, lime aioli, pico on corn tortillas with very good potatoes)- good but not great. Brioche pain Perdue (French toast) topped with fresh peaches with crispy bacon on the side - delicious! Chicken and waffles topped with peppered honey and syrup. Also very good. The true stars were the shrimp and grits & the pain perdue. Overall a wonderful meal but the special of the day was a miss.
