This place is seriously so interesting and fun! I came here with my friends while we were in the area and I'm really glad I did. Right off the bat, the interior really entertained me. It's extremely well-decorated and full of fun stamp cards and knick knacks that give the space a lot of personality. Even though the inside of the cafe is pretty small, I wanted to stick around inside just to take in everything on the walls and shelves. The people working were incredibly kind and made great drinks! I ordered a barley tea with sea cream; not many places make barley tea drinks anymore so I knew I had to try it. Plus, sea cream has never failed me so why not add it to my drink? It turned out to be a great decision. The drink was pleasant in the best way and the boba was a nice addition. I was really satisfied with my order and would recommend this drink to anyone else who enjoys barley tea. It's a shame I don't live nearby because I would totally love to come again! Simply put, this is the best tea/boba spot I've ever been to. While many tea shops display an array of milk drinks, Hoji Tea Room curated a menu that highlights its tea. Entering the cozy storefront, you are greeted by some retro decor, vibrant sketchbook artwork, EDM music, and tea brewers who would make Uncle Iroh proud. My go-to orders are definitely the Hojicha and barely tea, both with sea cream and boba. If you haven't tried Hojicha before, then I recommend you give it a shot. I heard about this place a couple weeks ago but it wasn't until recently that I decided to give it a try with a friend. I heard that the quality was very good and that they hand make their boba, which is pretty impressive. I almost missed where the store was located in the plaza, my friend located their small sign out front. The boba shop interior is pretty small, it had a few stools against the wall. Luckily we came at the perfect time, there was a small line forming behind us. Only a handful of people came in after us, like 3, and the line was pretty much to the door. Despite the small space, I loved the vintage decorations. It gave a cool vibe. Also their stamp card is the CUTEST thing. As a reader, I loved how their stamp card resembled those check in/check out logs within books. It was so creative, I just had to rave about it because of how cute it was. My friend got the iced matcha latte and I asked the cashier what their most popular drink was, which is the Hojicha sea cream. The sea cream was described to be like a cheese or salted foam on top. I decided to give it a try at 50% sugar with the boba pearls and wow, I was just blown away. The hoji tea flavor was flavorful and combined so well with the sea cream. Boba consistency was chewy and tasted good. Service was fast. I don't even think I asked for less ice, which I usually do everywhere else, and the ice level was just where I like it. If you told me that this place was somewhere in the 626, more Pasadena leaning or even somewhere more bougie, I'd believe you 100%, especially since Japanese tea places, milk tea or otherwise, have traditionally been in those areas and anywhere else...well you'd be lucky to have something that's not a chain or attached to a restaurant or bakery. So when I heard that Hoji was in Redlands, I knew I had to try! When I went they had some of their limited stock baked goods, so I got some cookies as well. Both were soft cookies that went great with milk tea. Definitely follow their social media. We got the: 1) Strawberry Matcha Latte Cookies with toasted milk powder: -Sweet, but not too sweet, the taste of the strawberry alongside the toasted milk powder balanced out the matcha. -At first I thought they baked in the sugar at the top of the cookie, but since it didn't taste burnt and much more palatable, I realized that it had to be something else (the milk powder of course!). -I'm used to having strawberry matcha as a beverage but never as a cookie, so this was a great, sweet treat. 2) Vegan Sourdough Chocolate Chip cookie: -Super interesting texture and definitely had more chewiness than what I'm used to for soft baked chocolate chip cookies. Really neat that it's vegan too boot. -It is a big grainy in texture as well, but nothing unpleasant, just different from what I've had in the past. Nice sizeable chocolate chips dispersed evenly throughout the cookie itself. 3) Assam Black Tea with Sea Cream: -The tea leaves are from India. -It's a barley tea with the sea salt cream on top. -I got this with adjusted sweetness and the slight saltiness of the sea cream, along with the added creamy texture afterwards was really yummy. It's something similar to what I've ordered at 7 Leaves, but higher quality and much more of a prominent, but not overpowering tea taste. 4) Mizudashi Hojicha: -It's a roasted green tea with handmade kokuto black sugar boba. -Since this place is named Hoji, this drink is a MUST, especially with getting it with their unique kokuto black sugar boba, something that I have never had or at least heard of beforehand. -The boba is definitely a bit more tender and less chewy than the standard boba that I've had at other places and the black sugar is nicely flavored throughout and has a slight crème brulee toasted taste to it. Another MUST even if you don't usually order boba. -The hojicha itself also had a nice subtle roasted taste to it with the green tea leaves. If I had this more accessible to me, I'd be ordering it each time if I could. If you're a Redlands being or if you're in the area, for sure something you gotta try! read more

Located in the same plaza as Escape Brewery, this tea shop is pretty tucked away in that there's no large sign above their location (look for the floor sign out front). They have a limited (but good) selection of teas to choose from and they make their own boba! What I thought was cool about their boba is that the boba isn't round. They're more of a square/rectangle-ish shape and much better tasting than your average boba shop. I definitely recommend. Orders: Barley + Sea Cream: I LOVE barley tea and this was my favorite menu item by far. Great barley tea flavor, nice saltiness from the cream, and delicious boba to top it off. Matcha latte: Made with oat milk and high-quality matcha. Make sure you mix well before drinking. This was both rich and refreshing. 2nd favorite thing I've tried here. Hojicha + Sea Cream: The tea flavor wasn't very strong, so I wasn't much of a fan. Probably wouldn't order this one again. I've been going back to try the Assam, but they've been out of stock. The salted Thai seems to be popular as well, but you can't adjust the sweetness on that one - so I haven't tried it. Overall, a solid experience. If you're looking for more authentic and higher quality tea in the area, Hoji is it! 2 guys running it are super friendly and kind also. My go to is the hoji tea with oat milk. Such a good roasted nutty flavor, balanced well with the creaminess of the oat milk. They try out different matchas here and there, but they're always good quality! Their boba isn't traditional. The nuttiness of the hojicha tea was excellent - deeply fragrant with a subtle nuttiness. The sea cream adds salty and creamy notes to balance the sweetness of the base tea. As far as the kokuto boba, their handmade boba, it held the quintessential QQ texture and was not too sweet. Service was excellent. The pricing of their drinks is extremely reasonable, especially since most boba establishments, even in the Inland Empire, will charge a $5-6 minimum for their drinks. No exaggeration. Got the matcha and the hojicha latte, both with boba. Upon first sip I was blown away. Hoji Tea Room knows what they're doing and I hope they stick around. The matcha was so floral and sweet, with a good bitter undertone. They're definitely using high quality matcha. As for the hojicha, the deep flavor of the roasted green tea is very present and is done to perfection, not watered down, not too overpowering. I wish I had gotten a large in the matcha, I wanted more. The interior is also super cool, I love all the figurines and the retro props. The space is warm and inviting. Upon first impressions, they appear to enjoy what they're doing and it shows in how they interact with the customer. It's a small location where the space can only occupy around 4 to potentially 6 customers at a time. There is available seating outside, a table that can fit for two and another table that can fit for four, it's definitely the type of setting where you should expect a quick grab and go. After making your order, there are only three stools set up, which makes sense because of the limited space available to stand around. Be prepared to stand outside for a bit or just go back inside when there is no potential hustle and bustle. The only issue that a person may face when coming here for the first time is trying to find the location itself. I consider the location to be part of a business plaza, so Hoji is not a stand alone business. It occupies a unit that is located next to another business called "COOKING BLOCK". I mention the business it's located next to because Hoji does not have a large business plaque like the other business units located here. Drink Choice: Salted Thai (Thai Tea + Salted Cream) This was an enjoyable drink. I'm familiar with how a Thai tea would normally taste and how the texture should feel when you're drinking one for the first time, so this is a definitely an A+ in my books. And the salted cream was not something I expected, but it was a nice after taste when finishing off each sip of the drink. Close to the I10 Freeway... Great option when you crave boba tea in this neck of the woods. Although, It was just a bit hard to find at night & had a bad smell when we walked in. Not sure where the smell came from but our noses adjusted by the time we left. Or the powerful fan dissipated it quickly. The Matcha only comes in one small size and is delicious! I would order it again! Hubby liked his Thai tea & the boba was good. I didn't realize that there was a lot of caffeine in the Match until the gentleman told me so. That's especially great since we were driving late & needed a boost of delish energy There wasn't but maybe 2 spots to sit inside so I'm not sure if this is a place to congregate.
