I have been a customer of Hokema's for several years. They know their stuff and their expertise servicing sewing machines and embroidery machines is second to none. When it came time to have both my mom's old Penncrest sewing machine and Babylock 6-needle machines serviced, I opted for an in-home visit from JD, their tech. In a word, the experience was great. I live up in the mountains and JD had close to an hour's drive to get here. He spent most of the day working on my machines, so I got to see what people who drop their machines off at the shop don't. His attention to detail was truly impressive. I love learning the backstory on things and he was generous in explaining what he was doing, why and how I can better care for my equipment in the future. Our discussions ranged all over the place with JD giving me fascinating insights into my machines, his training and how Hokema's operates. In turn, I told him about my soil and plant projects and new tractor. I was tending to our greenhouse, potting up seedlings and mixing natural amendments into a custom soil blend. I cruised in and out, telling him about my work and he proved to be surprisingly interested and knowledgeable. It made for a day of rich education both ways. When it came to Mom's zigzag sewing machine, I debated spending the $100. These machines were sold by JC Penny a long time ago and I'll bet it cost a mere fraction of the servicing price when it was brand new. But Mom was an excellent seamstress and she did all of her later work with this machine. I knew it was worthwhile to have it cleaned and adjusted, especially since newer machines tend to be poorly made. Mom's been gone a long time, but I got a chance to reconnect with her as I watched JD work. After he'd completed the mechanical portion, he thoroughly cleaned the exterior, even removing some tape that was on the base and wiping down the entire cabinet. I know Mom appreciated it and so did I. When I mentioned a tension question I had with the antique Singer treadle sewing machine that goes all the way back to my childhood, JD offered to check it out, too. He proved to be as knowledgeable on the treadle as he was on the others, assuring me the tension was just fine but Hokema's can still provide parts if needed. He has an abiding respect for all of the machines that provide his income and it shows. My sole complaint is JD didn't show up wearing a mask, nor did he ask whether I'd prefer it. We're in the 2nd year of the C-19 pandemic and both my husband and I have been exceedingly careful in limiting our contact with others. We trust science and have had both vaccinations and are past the two-week period after that may help resist infection, or I would have sent JD packing before he ever got started. I'm glad I didn't have to. I enjoyed our discussions throughout the day, even hearing why JD's not keen on getting vaccinated. I disagree with him and hope he comes around. To end on a high note, I loved learning that JD and Hardy (Hokema; the owner) are dog people, as are we. JD and I shared rescued dog stories as our dog, Bufant, wandered in and out of our cabin. Dog people rock, as do thorough technicians. This means those 5 stars in my rating are doing double duty. Job well done, JD. Thanks! read more

Today I went in to see if my sewing machine was worth fixing. On a scale of 1-10 my sewing knowledge and skill is maybe a 3. One of the owners listened to what the issues with my machine were, told me it was a simple fix (my needle was backwards) and took the time to teach me a few things. He was so helpful and friendly and I left with my machine in hand. It was my first time in there as a customer and I will most definitely be back for supplies. Thank you!! read more

I bought a Riccar vacuum there nearly 3 years ago for $900. The man selling it to me seemed quite nice. I had bought things there in the past like vacuum bags, and what not. I was told they serviced the vacuum after two years, and then again at four years after purchase. I called them up today to see if it was due for service. I could've sworn I was told I would get a reminder when it was time. I was told today that it's been too long to get the two-year service. It's up to me to know when it needs serviced. There's only a one month window that it can be serviced during. None of that was pointed out to me when I bought the $900 vacuum. Didn't even get a sorry or anything. Just another greedy business masquerading as a helpful caring local family. I call bullshit. Thanks for nothing Hokema's. read more

Thank you Hokema's. We needed new filters for our Dyson vacuum cleaner, and we first thought look on Dyson website, then look on Amazon. They both had the filters but we would have to wait for the filters to arrive 3-5 days. Then I remembered we have a vacuum store here and yes they had what we needed in stock. I had a problem with Hokema's that make a little splash in this backwater of Yelpdom, but the owner took the time to contact me and asked for another chance. He's contacted others, too. The whole situation has become a little awkward, including the emergence of recent reviews of the business that appear to have been solicited by the owner. Even so, I'm going to give Hardy Hokema the benefit of the doubt. Before I witnessed the event involving the D-bag employee that I described in a former post and have now deleted, I thought Hokema's was a fine example of a locally owned specialty shop. Hokema's sold my wife and I a BabyLock Crown Jewel Longarm sewing machine. The machine was a lemon, but the assistance we received from Hokema's was beyond the call of duty! They backed their product 110% and gave us the best service anyone could have asked for. When a problem arose, they traveled 100 miles to our home to help fix the problem. They did this several times! Finally, when it was clear that the problem was a lemon machine, they returned our money and accepted back the machine with no questions asked. I am sold on Hokema's. I only wish we lived closer to their location so we could shop there more often. read more

brought in my malfunctioning 10 year old singer for a tune up. They were amazingly fast (which I understand is not the norm) and the gentlemen at the counter was very cordial and cautiously helpful. the store is well stocked with a dizzying array of merchandise. The sales people in attendance were friendly. I have been back in twice, and been helped by women both times, who were less cordial. still efficient, but not welcoming. the second lady never smiled, nor greeted me. I am in customer service for a living, and that lack makes me crazy. It costs nothing to smile at people, and be welcoming, and it makes them feel good about coming back. just saying. read more

Very disappointed with customer service. I took a Red Devil hand held vac to Hokema's, per the Mfg. instructions, for warranty work. Vac could not be fixed and Mfg.was going to send a new replacement unit. Three weeks later and no replacement or any idea when it will be here. And they could not check because they "don't know who to call, they only communicate by email." Per Hokema's "take it somewhere else." Hokema's is the ONLY authorized Red Devil warranty repair facility in Redding. I picked up vac and will deal with Mfg. directly. I have gone to Hokema's in the past for parts and service and have had some issues but just overlooked them. Perhaps Hokema's should cancel their warranty repair agreement if they would rather not deal with helping customers who did not purchase a product from their store. I have to say I am the LUCKY owner of the best vacuum I have ever owned. Having owned it for around 2 or 3 years now, thought I should write a honest review. I have a dog that sheds an insane amount of hair, you would think she was ill based on the large quantity of hair that accumulates on my floor DAILY. I bought a vacuum here 11 years ago. They have serviced it and it has been going strong. They sold me a riccar and it has been awesome I had spent years buying a new vacuum every two years until I bought this vacuum. Service has been wonderful and speedy. They will definitely help you with what you need. The vacuums seem expensive but I am here to tell you that I no longer buy a new unit every two years at $200 a pop. I haven't bought another vacuum since I have had this riccar. It was definitely a good investment as I look back over the years I have owned this vacuum. Stopped by to ask if they had any industrial sewing machines that would sew several thicknesses of heavy denim and leather, heavy upholstery etc. Clerk directed to me "the sewing expert". She directed me to a computerized quilting machine. I said that it was too complicated and I knew then that she didn't know what she was doing or what a real industrial sewing machine was.! She then directed me to a 400.00 Magnolia. WHAT THE HECK??!!! Should have simply said no we don't have industrial machines but you can go over to Ludwigs, a place I found later on my own. I took my sewing machine in for a tune-up. The foot control was not working. I was sold a new foot control for $49.95. It was defective (per Hokema's repairman). Left my singer at the store July 7-17-20. Called 2 times to find out if my machine was ready. They were waiting for the part. 9-5-20 I went to pick up my sewing machine and refund. Service cashier: Hardy Hokema's who told me we're even. I told him I paid $49.95 for a defective foot control. He said "He wanted the defective part back then". Thank goodness I had the part that was inside my sewing machine. Me. Hokema's reluctantly he refunded my money and added the part was shipped. Extremely poor attitude! Will never use this business again. Looked on e-bay and found several brand new foot controls, at half the price and free shipping. Hokema's is overpriced and horrible customer service. I am happy I found my part on line for half the price. Plus, in all the time they had my machine, they had not cleaned and tuned up my Singer Computerized sewing machine. Which was the original reason I took my machine to them for in the first place. read more

I have always had very friendly and top notice professional service from Hokema's. I have purchased three sewing machines, a serger and one vacuum (all still in use). Even before I ever purchased a machine from them I was a customer for vacuum bags belts and that sort of thing. I believe I first started doing business there around 17 years ago and while I would not say I'm in there a lot, I have met most of the people that work there and they are supper sweet. I Refered someone to them who had had a problem with a different shop and she loves doing business with Hokema's. She is now a frequent visitor to their shop. I would recommend Hokama's without reservation to anyone in need of sewing machines, vacuums, parts, service or sewing classes. I believe they go out of their way to give exceptional and fair treatment to their customers. I wish I had time to detail all the reasons I would say that but I just can't right now (it's 12:30 AM & typing is slow and tedious on iPad). But surfice it to say Hokama's is a family owned business and it appears to me that they care about each and every customer and that they operate their business by 'The Golden Rule' and with integrity. Excuse my ignorance: I did not know I needed to service a vacuum. I have a Dyson. I had noticed while vacuuming it was hot. I took a break to let it cool down. When I tried to vacuum again it turned off. I was really concerned I would need to purchase a new vacuum. Mine was only about 4 years old and I was hoping it would last. A friend recommended this place. I called, they were super friendly and asked me to bring it in without making me get an appointment. Turns out I needed a service. The repairs didn't take long. I was able to pick up my vacuum in less than a day. I had the standard service change and the warranty covered the belts and filter replacements. My vacuum looked almost new when I got it back. They had cleaned it out very well. When I went to vacuum my bedroom I was appalled at what it was able to pick up in comparison to pre-servicing. So I learned a big lesson. Hokema's is a good old fashioned service oriented business. We have purchased two high end vacuums, one 27 years ago and when it died 5 years ago we replaced it with the same one. I recently bought a new serger and wasn't happy with it. They told me "no problem" just bring it back for a refund. I ended up buying a different brand from them and I am completely satisfied. They threw in many extras including 9 hours of classes. read more

Worst customer service I have ever experienced! I wish I could give a negative star!!! I brought my singer sewing machine in because a small plastic piece needed to be replaced. They said they would order the part and it would be no problem. After not hearing from them for a MONTH I decided to finally call and see what was going on. I asked if they still had my sewing machine and how much longer it would be. The man I talked to went to check and said they still had it but haven't even ordered the part and might order it in a week or so. I asked why no one had called to update me or bother to tell me they still had it and were waiting to place the order and he got mad and said they don't have a computer system to call every customer. Her was very defensive and made it seem like it was my fault that they hadn't ordered the part or contacted me at all in the last month!!!! I would have had no problem waiting even longer if they would have simply given me a quick call to let me know what was happening. By the way you don't need a computer system to call people....slap a post it on the machine and then write the date you called it takes 5 seconds to do that no computer necessary. read more

I couldn't be happier with their vacuum repair service... thought I'd have to shell out for a new machine but they not only replaced the bad hose on my Dyson but gave it back to me all cleaned up with new brush roller as well for a very reasonable price! As much as I liked the loaner they gave me to use while mine was being serviced my old one is now good as new .... I will certainly be back there when it truly is time to replace it! read more

I have an old vacuum which Is the best vacuum I have ever owned including a Dyson which I also own. The old Hoover suddenly lost suction from one useage to the next. I took it to Hokemas for diagnosis. They told me the bearings in the motor were shot and it was unsaveable. They asked me if I wanted them to throw it away. I said no and picked it up. I didn't see how the vacuum could sound the same as always and just suddenly develop bad bearings. It was simply the rubber seal on the top had slid out of place and was not making a good seat. I straightened the seal and, voila, the vacuum once again works very well. I will now silicone the seal in place so this can't happen again. Very disappointed in Hokemas. I don't know if it was simple incompetence or they wanted to sell me a new vacuum. read more

My parents had a small business in Redding and the vacuums needed regular repairs as items that should have been picked up by hand seemed to end up in the vacuum. The business was sold years ago, but we have continued using Hokema's for our personal vacuum and sewing machine maintenace and repairs.
